2023-04-11arm64: mm: always map fixmap at page granularityMark Rutland
Today the fixmap code largely maps elements at PAGE_SIZE granularity, but we special-case the FDT mapping such that it can be mapped with 2M block mappings when 4K pages are in use. The original rationale for this was simplicity, but it has some unfortunate side-effects, and complicates portions of the fixmap code (i.e. is not so simple after all). The FDT can be up to 2M in size but is only required to have 8-byte alignment, and so it may straddle a 2M boundary. Thus when using 2M block mappings we may map up to 4M of memory surrounding the FDT. This is unfortunate as most of that memory will be unrelated to the FDT, and any pages which happen to share a 2M block with the FDT will by mapped with Normal Write-Back Cacheable attributes, which might not be what we want elsewhere (e.g. for carve-outs using Non-Cacheable attributes). The logic to handle mapping the FDT with 2M blocks requires some special cases in the fixmap code, and ties it to the early page table configuration by virtue of the SWAPPER_TABLE_SHIFT and SWAPPER_BLOCK_SIZE constants used to determine the granularity used to map the FDT. This patch simplifies the FDT logic and removes the unnecessary mappings of surrounding pages by always mapping the FDT at page granularity as with all other fixmap mappings. To do so we statically reserve multiple PTE tables to cover the fixmap VA range. Since the FDT can be at most 2M, for 4K pages we only need to allocate a single additional PTE table, and for 16K and 64K pages the existing single PTE table is sufficient. The PTE table allocation scales with the number of slots reserved in the fixmap, and so this also makes it easier to add more fixmap entries if we require those in future. Our VA layout means that the fixmap will always fall within a single PMD table (and consequently, within a single PUD/P4D/PGD entry), which we can verify at compile time with a static_assert(). With that assert a number of runtime warnings become impossible, and are removed. I've boot-tested this patch with both 4K and 64K pages. 2023-04-11arm64: add FIXADDR_TOT_{START,SIZE}Mark Rutland
Currently arm64's FIXADDR_{START,SIZE} definitions only cover the runtime fixmap slots (and not the boot-time fixmap slots), but the code for creating the fixmap assumes that these definitions cover the entire fixmap range. This means that the ptdump boundaries are reported in a misleading way, missing the VA region of the runtime slots. In theory this could also cause the fixmap creation to go wrong if the boot-time fixmap slots end up spilling into a separate PMD entry, though luckily this is not currently the case in any configuration. While it seems like we could extend FIXADDR_{START,SIZE} to cover the entire fixmap area, core code relies upon these *only* covering the runtime slots. For example, fix_to_virt() and virt_to_fix() try to reject manipulation of the boot-time slots based upon FIXADDR_{START,SIZE}, while __fix_to_virt() and __virt_to_fix() can handle any fixmap slot. This patch follows the lead of x86 in commit: 55f49fcb879fbeeb ("x86/mm: Fix overlap of i386 CPU_ENTRY_AREA with FIX_BTMAP") ... and add new FIXADDR_TOT_{START,SIZE} definitions which cover the entire fixmap area, using these for the fixmap creation and ptdump code. As the boot-time fixmap slots are now rejected by fix_to_virt(), the early_fixmap_init() code is changed to consistently use __fix_to_virt(), as it already does in a few cases. 2023-04-11arm64: stacktrace: always inline core stacktrace functionsMark Rutland
The arm64 stacktrace code can be used in kprobe context, and so cannot be safely probed. Some (but not all) of the unwind functions are annotated with `NOKPROBE_SYMBOL()` to ensure this, with others markes as `__always_inline`, relying on the top-level unwind function being marked as `noinstr`. This patch has stacktrace.c consistently mark the internal stacktrace functions as `__always_inline`, removing the need for NOKPROBE_SYMBOL() as the top-level unwind function (arch_stack_walk()) is marked as `noinstr`. This is more consistent and is a simpler pattern to follow for future additions to stacktrace.c. There should be no functional change as a result of this patch. The function which calls the top-level backtracing function may have been instrumented with ftrace and/or kprobes, and hence the first return address may have been rewritten. Factor out the existing fgraph / kretprobes address recovery, and use this for the first address. As the comment for the fgraph case isn't all that helpful, I've also dropped that. This builds up on the CALL_OPS work which extends the ftrace patchsite on arm64 with an ops pointer usable by the ftrace trampoline. This ops pointer is valid at all time. Indeed, it is either pointing to ftrace_list_ops or to the single ops which should be called from that patchsite. Some older processors don't allow BIT(13) and BIT(15) in the current mask set by "THERM_STATUS_CLEAR_CORE_MASK". This results in: unchecked MSR access error: WRMSR to 0x19c (tried to write 0x000000000000aaa8) at rIP: 0xffffffff816f66a6 (throttle_active_work+0xa6/0x1d0) To avoid unchecked MSR issues, check CPUID for each relevant feature and use that information to set the supported feature bits only in the "clear" mask for cores. Do the same for the analogous package mask set by "THERM_STATUS_CLEAR_PKG_MASK". Introduce functions thermal_intr_init_core_clear_mask() and thermal_intr_init_pkg_clear_mask() to set core and package mask bits, respectively. These functions are called during initialization. 2023-04-11soc: mediatek: Kconfig: Add MTK_CMDQ dependency to MTK_MMSYSAngeloGioacchino Del Regno
The mtk-mmsys and mutex drivers do have a dependency on MTK_CMDQ, even though both can work with *or* without it: since CMDQ support can be enabled either as module or as built-in, it is necessary to add a depends rule in Kconfig, so that we disallow building both mtk-mmsys and mtk-mutex as built-in if mtk-cmdq-helper is built as a module, otherwise obvious linker issues appear. 2023-04-11fbmem: Reject FB_ACTIVATE_KD_TEXT from userspaceDaniel Vetter
This is an oversight from dc5bdb68b5b3 ("drm/fb-helper: Fix vt restore") - I failed to realize that nasty userspace could set this. It's not pretty to mix up kernel-internal and userspace uapi flags like this, but since the entire fb_var_screeninfo structure is uapi we'd need to either add a new parameter to the ->fb_set_par callback and fb_set_par() function, which has a _lot_ of users. Or some other fairly ugly side-channel int fb_info. Neither is a pretty prospect. Instead just correct the issue at hand by filtering out this kernel-internal flag in the ioctl handling code. Although the mapping points to an architected event, it may not always be available. This can be seen with a simple: $ perf stat -e branches sleep 0 Performance counter stats for 'sleep 0': <not supported> branches 0.001401081 seconds time elapsed Yet the hardware does have an event that could be used for branches. Dynamically check for a supported hardware event which can be used for PERF_COUNT_HW_BRANCH_INSTRUCTIONS at mapping time. 2023-04-11ARM: 9292/1: vfp: Pass thread_info pointer to vfp_support_entryArd Biesheuvel
Instead of dereferencing thread_info in do_vfp, pass the thread_info pointer to vfp_support_entry via R1. That way, we only use a single caller save register, which makes it easier to convert do_vfp to C code in a subsequent patch. Note that, unlike the CPU number, which can change due to preemption, passing the thread_info pointer can safely be done with preemption enabled. 2023-04-11drm/i915/dsi: fix DSS CTL register offsets for TGL+Jani Nikula
On TGL+ the DSS control registers are at different offsets, and there's one per pipe. Fix the offsets to fix dual link DSI for TGL+. There would be helpers for this in the DSC code, but just do the quick fix now for DSI. Long term, we should probably move all the DSS handling into intel_vdsc.c, so exporting the helpers seems counter-productive. 2023-04-11kbuild: give up untracked files for source package buildsMasahiro Yamada
When the source tree is dirty and contains untracked files, package builds may fail, for example, when a broken symlink exists, a file path contains whitespaces, etc. Since commit 05e96e96a315 ("kbuild: use git-archive for source package creation"), the source tarball only contains committed files because it is created by 'git archive'. scripts/package/gen-diff-patch tries to address the diff from HEAD, but including untracked files by the hand-crafted script introduces more complexity. I wrote a patch [1] to make it work in most cases, but still wonder if this is what we should aim for. To simplify the code, this patch just gives up untracked files. Going forward, it is your responsibility to do 'git add' for what you want in the source package. The script shows a warning just in case you forgot to do so. It should be checked only when building source packages. 2023-04-10Documentation: Add document for false sharingFeng Tang
When doing performance tuning or debugging performance regressions, more and more cases are found to be related to false sharing [1][2][3], and the situation can be worse for newer platforms with hundreds of CPUs. There are already many commits in current kernel specially for mitigating the performance degradation due to false sharing. False sharing could harm the performance silently without being noticed, due to reasons like: * data members of a big data structure randomly sitting together in one cache line * global data of small size are linked compactly together So it's better to make a simple document about the normal pattern of false sharing, basic ways to mitigate it and call out to developers to pay attention during code-writing.
