2021-12-06perf inject: Fix itrace space allowed for new attributesAdrian Hunter
The space allowed for new attributes can be too small if existing header information is large. That can happen, for example, if there are very many CPUs, due to having an event ID per CPU per event being stored in the header information. Fix by adding the existing header.data_offset. Also increase the extra space allowed to 8KiB and align to a 4KiB boundary for neatness. 2021-12-06ethtool: do not perform operations on net devices being unregisteredAntoine Tenart
There is a short period between a net device starts to be unregistered and when it is actually gone. In that time frame ethtool operations could still be performed, which might end up in unwanted or undefined behaviours[1]. Do not allow ethtool operations after a net device starts its unregistration. This patch targets the netlink part as the ioctl one isn't affected: the reference to the net device is taken and the operation is executed within an rtnl lock section and the net device won't be found after unregister. Andreas reported that a specific build environment for an external module, being a bit broken, does pass CC_IMPLICIT_FALLTHROUGH quoted as argument to gcc, causing an error gcc-11: error: "-Wimplicit-fallthrough=5": linker input file not found: No such file or directory Until this is more generally fixed as outlined in [1], by fixing scripts/link-vmlinux.sh, scripts/gen_autoksyms.sh, etc to not directly include the include/config/auto.conf, and in a second step, change Kconfig to generate the auto.conf without "", workaround the issue by explicitly unquoting CC_IMPLICIT_FALLTHROUGH. Vladimir reported csum issues after my recent change in skb_postpull_rcsum() Issue here is the following: initial skb->csum is the csum of [part to be pulled][rest of packet] Old code: skb->csum = csum_sub(skb->csum, csum_partial(pull, pull_length, 0)); New code: skb->csum = ~csum_partial(pull, pull_length, ~skb->csum); This is broken if the csum of [pulled part] happens to be equal to skb->csum, because end result of skb->csum is 0 in new code, instead of being 0xffffffff David Laight suggested to use skb->csum = -csum_partial(pull, pull_length, -skb->csum); I based my patches on existing code present in include/net/seg6.h, update_csum_diff4() and update_csum_diff16() which might need a similar fix. I guess that my tests, mostly pulling 40 bytes of IPv6 header were not providing enough entropy to hit this bug. v2: added wsum_negate() to make sparse happy. net device are refcounted. Over the years we had numerous bugs caused by imbalanced dev_hold() and dev_put() calls. The general idea is to be able to precisely pair each decrement with a corresponding prior increment. Both share a cookie, basically a pointer to private data storing stack traces. This patch adds dev_hold_track() and dev_put_track(). To use these helpers, each data structure owning a refcount should also use a "netdevice_tracker" to pair the hold and put. netdevice_tracker dev_tracker; ... dev_hold_track(dev, &dev_tracker, GFP_ATOMIC); ... dev_put_track(dev, &dev_tracker); Whenever a leak happens, we will get precise stack traces of the point dev_hold_track() happened, at device dismantle phase. We will also get a stack trace if too many dev_put_track() for the same netdevice_tracker are attempted. This is guarded by CONFIG_NET_DEV_REFCNT_TRACKER option. 2021-12-06lib: add reference counting tracking infrastructureEric Dumazet
It can be hard to track where references are taken and released. In networking, we have annoying issues at device or netns dismantles, and we had various proposals to ease root causing them. This patch adds new infrastructure pairing refcount increases and decreases. This will self document code, because programmers will have to associate increments/decrements. This is controled by CONFIG_REF_TRACKER which can be selected by users of this feature. This adds both cpu and memory costs, and thus should probably be used with care. After setting pre-set combined to 16 queues and reserving 16 queues by tc qdisc, pre-set maximum combined queues returned to default value after VF reset being 4 and this generated errors during removing tc. 2021-12-06iavf: Fix reporting when setting descriptor countMichal Maloszewski
iavf_set_ringparams doesn't communicate to the user that 1. The user requested descriptor count is out of range. Instead it just quietly sets descriptors to the "clamped" value and calls it done. This makes it look an invalid value was successfully set as the descriptor count when this isn't actually true. 2. The user provided descriptor count needs to be inflated for alignment reasons. This behavior is confusing. The ice driver has already addressed this by rejecting invalid values for descriptor count and messaging for alignment adjustments. Do the same thing here by adding the error and info messages. 2021-12-06bpf: Remove config check to enable bpf support for branch recordsKajol Jain
Branch data available to BPF programs can be very useful to get stack traces out of userspace application. Commit fff7b64355ea ("bpf: Add bpf_read_branch_records() helper") added BPF support to capture branch records in x86. Enable this feature also for other architectures as well by removing checks specific to x86. If an architecture doesn't support branch records, bpf_read_branch_records() still has appropriate checks and it will return an -EINVAL in that scenario. Based on UAPI helper doc in include/uapi/linux/bpf.h, unsupported architectures should return -ENOENT in such case. Hence, update the appropriate check to return -ENOENT instead.
