2020-04-01signal: Extend exec_id to 64bitsEric W. Biederman
Replace the 32bit exec_id with a 64bit exec_id to make it impossible to wrap the exec_id counter. With care an attacker can cause exec_id wrap and send arbitrary signals to a newly exec'd parent. This bypasses the signal sending checks if the parent changes their credentials during exec. The severity of this problem can been seen that in my limited testing of a 32bit exec_id it can take as little as 19s to exec 65536 times. Which means that it can take as little as 14 days to wrap a 32bit exec_id. Adam Zabrocki has succeeded wrapping the self_exe_id in 7 days. Even my slower timing is in the uptime of a typical server. Which means self_exec_id is simply a speed bump today, and if exec gets noticably faster self_exec_id won't even be a speed bump. Extending self_exec_id to 64bits introduces a problem on 32bit architectures where reading self_exec_id is no longer atomic and can take two read instructions. Which means that is is possible to hit a window where the read value of exec_id does not match the written value. So with very lucky timing after this change this still remains expoiltable. I have updated the update of exec_id on exec to use WRITE_ONCE and the read of exec_id in do_notify_parent to use READ_ONCE to make it clear that there is no locking between these two locations. 2020-04-01kdb: Censor attempts to set PROMPT without ENABLE_MEM_READDaniel Thompson
Currently the PROMPT variable could be abused to provoke the printf() machinery to read outside the current stack frame. Normally this doesn't matter becaues md is already a much better tool for reading from memory. However the md command can be disabled by not setting KDB_ENABLE_MEM_READ. Let's also prevent PROMPT from being modified in these circumstances. Whilst adding a comment to help future code reviewers we also remove the #ifdef where PROMPT in consumed. 2020-04-01kdb: Eliminate strncpy() warnings by replacing with strscpy()Daniel Thompson
Currently the code to manage the kdb history buffer uses strncpy() to copy strings to/and from the history and exhibits the classic "but nobody ever told me that strncpy() doesn't always terminate strings" bug. Modern gcc compilers recognise this bug and issue a warning. In reality these calls will only abridge the copied string if kdb_read() has *already* overflowed the command buffer. Thus the use of counted copies here is only used to reduce the secondary effects of a bug elsewhere in the code. Therefore transitioning these calls into strscpy() (without checking the return code) is appropriate. A hrtimer can be released in its callback, but lockdep_hrtimer_exit() dereferences the pointer after the callback returns, i.e. a potential use after free. 2020-04-01ACPI: video: Use native backlight on Acer Aspire 5783zHans de Goede
The Acer Aspire 5783z shipped with Windows 7 and as such does not trigger our "win8 ready" heuristic for prefering the native backlight interface. Still ACPI backlight control doesn't work on this model, where as the native (intel_video) backlight interface does work. Add a quirk to force using native backlight control on this model. 2020-04-01powerpc: Make setjmp/longjmp signature standardClement Courbet
Declaring setjmp()/longjmp() as taking longs makes the signature non-standard, and makes clang complain. In the past, this has been worked around by adding -ffreestanding to the compile flags. The implementation looks like it only ever propagates the value (in longjmp) or sets it to 1 (in setjmp), and we only call longjmp with integer parameters. This allows removing -ffreestanding from the compilation flags. 2020-04-01powerpc: Suppress .eh_frame generationNaveen N. Rao
GCC v8 defaults to enabling -fasynchronous-unwind-tables due to https://gcc.gnu.org/r259298, which results in .eh_frame section being generated. This results in additional disk usage by the build, as well as the kernel modules. Since the kernel has no use for this, this section is discarded. Add -fno-asynchronous-unwind-tables to KBUILD_CFLAGS to suppress generation of .eh_frame section. 2020-04-01selftests/powerpc: Fix try-run when source tree is not writableMichael Ellerman
We added a usage of try-run to pmu/ebb/Makefile to detect if the toolchain supported the -no-pie option. This fails if we build out-of-tree and the source tree is not writable, as try-run tries to write its temporary files to the current directory. That leads to the -no-pie option being silently dropped, which leads to broken executables with some toolchains. If we remove the redirect to /dev/null in try-run, we see the error: make[3]: Entering directory '/linux/tools/testing/selftests/powerpc/pmu/ebb' /usr/bin/ld: cannot open output file .54.tmp: Read-only file system collect2: error: ld returned 1 exit status make[3]: Nothing to be done for 'all'. And looking with strace we see it's trying to use a file that's in the source tree: lstat("/linux/tools/testing/selftests/powerpc/pmu/ebb/.54.tmp", 0x7ffffc0f83c8) We can fix it by setting TMPOUT to point to the $(OUTPUT) directory, and we can verify with strace it's now trying to write to the output directory: lstat("/output/kselftest/powerpc/pmu/ebb/.54.tmp", 0x7fffd1bf6bf8) And also see that the -no-pie option is now correctly detected.
