2021-01-22kthread: Extract KTHREAD_IS_PER_CPUPeter Zijlstra
There is a need to distinguish geniune per-cpu kthreads from kthreads that happen to have a single CPU affinity. Geniune per-cpu kthreads are kthreads that are CPU affine for correctness, these will obviously have PF_KTHREAD set, but must also have PF_NO_SETAFFINITY set, lest userspace modify their affinity and ruins things. However, these two things are not sufficient, PF_NO_SETAFFINITY is also set on other tasks that have their affinities controlled through other means, like for instance workqueues. Therefore another bit is needed; it turns out kthread_create_per_cpu() already has such a bit: KTHREAD_IS_PER_CPU, which is used to make kthread_park()/kthread_unpark() work correctly. Expose this flag and remove the implicit setting of it from kthread_create_on_cpu(); the io_uring usage of it seems dubious at best. 2021-01-22workqueue: Use cpu_possible_mask instead of cpu_active_mask to break affinityLai Jiangshan
The scheduler won't break affinity for us any more, and we should "emulate" the same behavior when the scheduler breaks affinity for us. The behavior is "changing the cpumask to cpu_possible_mask". And there might be some other CPUs online later while the worker is still running with the pending work items. The worker should be allowed to use the later online CPUs as before and process the work items ASAP. If we use cpu_active_mask here, we can't achieve this goal but using cpu_possible_mask can. 2021-01-22sched/core: Print out straggler tasks in sched_cpu_dying()Valentin Schneider
Since commit 1cf12e08bc4d ("sched/hotplug: Consolidate task migration on CPU unplug") tasks are expected to move themselves out of a out-going CPU. For most tasks this will be done automagically via BALANCE_PUSH, but percpu kthreads will have to cooperate and move themselves away one way or another. Currently, some percpu kthreads (workqueues being a notable exemple) do not cooperate nicely and can end up on an out-going CPU at the time sched_cpu_dying() is invoked. Print the dying rq's tasks to shed some light on the stragglers. 2021-01-22regulator: Fix lockdep warning resolving suppliesMark Brown
With commit eaa7995c529b54 (regulator: core: avoid regulator_resolve_supply() race condition) we started holding the rdev lock while resolving supplies, an operation that requires holding the regulator_list_mutex. This results in lockdep warnings since in other places we take the list mutex then the mutex on an individual rdev. Since the goal is to make sure that we don't call set_supply() twice rather than a concern about the cost of resolution pull the rdev lock and check for duplicate resolution down to immediately before we do the set_supply() and drop it again once the allocation is done. 2021-01-22mac80211: minstrel_ht: fix rounding error in throughput calculationFelix Fietkau
On lower data rates, the throughput calculation has a significant rounding error, causing rates like 48M and 54M OFDM to share the same throughput value with >= 90% success probablity. This is because the result of the division (prob_avg * 1000) / nsecs is really small (8 in this example). Improve accuracy by moving over some zeroes, making better use of the full range of u32 before the division. 2021-01-22mac80211: minstrel_ht: add support for OFDM rates on non-HT clientsFelix Fietkau
The legacy minstrel code is essentially unmaintained and receives only very little testing. In order to bring the significant algorithm improvements from minstrel_ht to legacy clients, this patch adds support for OFDM rates to minstrel_ht and removes the fallback to the legacy codepath. This also makes it work much better on hardware with rate selection constraints, e.g. mt76. 2021-01-21net: ipa: remove a remoteproc dependencyAlex Elder
The IPA driver currently requires a DT property to be defined whose value is the phandle for the modem subsystem. This was needed to look up a remoteproc structure pointer used when registering for notifications in the original IPA notification mechanism. Remoteproc provides a more generic SSR notifier system, and the IPA driver switched over to it last summer, but this remoteproc phandle dependency was not removed at that time. Get rid of the IPA remoteproc pointer and stop requiring the phandle be specified. This avoids a link error (rproc_put() not defined) for certain configurations. The comment is quite weird, there is no such thing as a vendor-specific VPD id. 0x82 is the value of PCI_VPD_LRDT_ID_STRING. Thanks to a recent binutils change which doesn't generate unused symbols, it's now possible for thunk_64.o be completely empty without CONFIG_PREEMPTION: no text, no data, no symbols. We could edit the Makefile to only build that file when CONFIG_PREEMPTION is enabled, but that will likely create confusion if/when the thunks end up getting used by some other code again. Just ignore it and move on. This is basically a revert of commit 644592d32837 ("objtool: Fail the kernel build on fatal errors"). That change turned out to be more trouble than it's worth. Failing the build is an extreme measure which sometimes gets too much attention and blocks CI build testing. These fatal-type warnings aren't yet as rare as we'd hope, due to the ever-increasing matrix of supported toolchains/plugins and their fast-changing nature as of late. Also, there are more people (and bots) looking for objtool warnings than ever before, so even non-fatal warnings aren't likely to be ignored for long. 2021-01-21perf evlist: Fix id index for heterogeneous systemsAdrian Hunter
perf_evlist__set_sid_idx() updates perf_sample_id with the evlist map index, CPU number and TID. It is passed indexes to the evsel's cpu and thread maps, but references the evlist's maps instead. That results in using incorrect CPU numbers on heterogeneous systems. Fix it by using evsel maps. The id index (PERF_RECORD_ID_INDEX) is used by AUX area tracing when in sampling mode. Having an incorrect CPU number causes the trace data to be attributed to the wrong CPU, and can result in decoder errors because the trace data is then associated with the wrong process. 2021-01-21ethernet: ucc_geth: simplify rx/tx allocationsRasmus Villemoes
Since kmalloc() is nowadays [1] guaranteed to return naturally aligned (i.e., aligned to the size itself) memory for power-of-2 sizes, we don't need to over-allocate the align amount, compute an aligned address within the allocation, and (for later freeing) also storing the original pointer [2]. Instead, just round up the length we want to allocate to the alignment requirements, then round that up to the next power of 2. In theory, this could allocate up to about twice as much memory as we needed. In practice, (a) kmalloc() would in most cases anyway return a power-of-2-sized allocation and (b) with the default values of the bdRingLen[RT]x fields, the length is already itself a power of 2 greater than the alignment. So we actually end up saving memory compared to the current situtation (e.g. for tx, we currently allocate 128+32 bytes, which kmalloc() likely rounds up to 192 or 256; with this patch, we just allocate 128 bytes.) Also struct ucc_geth_private becomes a little smaller. 2021-01-21ethernet: ucc_geth: inform the compiler that numQueues is always 1Rasmus Villemoes
The numQueuesTx and numQueuesRx members of struct ucc_geth_info are never set to anything but 1, and never have been. It's unclear how well the code supporting multiple queues would work. Until somebody wants to play with enabling that, help the compiler eliminate a lot of dead code and loops that are not really loops by creating static inline helpers. If and when the numQueuesTx/numQueuesRx fields are re-introduced, it suffices to update those helper to return the appropriate field. This cuts the .text segment of ucc_geth.o by 8%.
