2009-09-18i2c/scx200_acb: Provide more information on bus errorsWilly Tarreau
Upon a bus error, it's rather hard to guess what happened. Dumping the address, length and status provides a lot of value for troubleshooting issues. Signed-off-by: Willy Tarreau <wtarreau@exceliance.fr> Signed-off-by: Jean Delvare <khali@linux-fr.org>
2009-09-18i2c: Provide compatibility links for i2c adaptersJean Delvare
Some user-space applications may be relying on i2c adapters showing up as class devices in sysfs. Provide compatibility links for them for the time being. We will remove them after a long transition period. Signed-off-by: Jean Delvare <khali@linux-fr.org> Cc: Kay Sievers <kay.sievers@vrfy.org>
2009-09-18i2c: Convert i2c adapters to bus devicesJean Delvare
Kay says i2c adapters shouldn't be class devices but bus devices. Convert them that way, using a device type. Signed-off-by: Jean Delvare <khali@linux-fr.org> Cc: Kay Sievers <kay.sievers@vrfy.org>

2009-09-18i2c/tsl2550: Use combined SMBus transactionsJean Delvare
Make the I/O faster, mainly by using combined SMBus transactions when possible. While the TSL2550 datasheet doesn't say the device supports them, they seem to work just fine in practice, and a combined transaction is faster than two simple transactions in many cases and always more reliable. A side effect is to suppress the delays between SMBus writes and reads. The datasheet doesn't say they are needed and things work just fine for me without them. I also couldn't see any reason for the delay between reading the two channels. Nor for the loop to get a reading in the first place. The 400 ms delay between samples only matters at chip power-up, after that the chip always hold the previously sampled value so we never get to wait. All these changes make reading the lux value much faster and cheaper. 2009-09-18i2c-taos-evm: Switch echo off to improve performanceJean Delvare
When echo is on, we waste time reading back our orders. Switching echo off makes performance much better: SMBus byte data transactions are 47% faster and byte transactions are 24% faster. Signed-off-by: Jean Delvare <khali@linux-fr.org>
2009-09-18i2c: Drop unused i2c_driver.id fieldJean Delvare

2009-09-18Btrfs: search for an allocation hint while filling file COWChris Mason
The allocator has some nice knobs for sending hints about where to try and allocate new blocks, but when we're doing file allocations we're not sending any hint at all. This commit adds a simple extent map search to see if we can quickly and easily find a hint for the allocator. Signed-off-by: Chris Mason <chris.mason@oracle.com>
2009-09-18Btrfs: properly honor wbc->nr_to_write changesChris Mason
When btrfs fills a delayed allocation, it tries to increase the wbc nr_to_write to cover a big part of allocation. The theory is that we're doing contiguous IO and writing a few more blocks will save seeks overall at a very low cost. The problem is that extent_write_cache_pages could ignore the new higher nr_to_write if nr_to_write had already gone down to zero. We fix that by rechecking the nr_to_write for every page that is processed in the pagevec. This updates the math around bumping the nr_to_write value to make sure we don't leave a tiny amount of IO hanging around for the very end of a new extent. 2009-09-18sched_clock: Make it NMI safePeter Zijlstra
Arjan complained about the suckyness of TSC on modern machines, and asked if we could do something about that for PERF_SAMPLE_TIME. Make cpu_clock() NMI safe by removing the spinlock and using cmpxchg. This also makes it smaller and more robust. Affects architectures that use HAVE_UNSTABLE_SCHED_CLOCK, i.e. IA64 and x86. 2009-09-18x86, perf_counter, bts: Optimize BTS overflow handlingMarkus Metzger
Draining the BTS buffer on a buffer overflow interrupt takes too long resulting in a kernel lockup when tracing the kernel. Restructure perf_counter sampling into sample creation and sample output. Prepare a single reference sample for BTS sampling and update the from and to address fields when draining the BTS buffer. Drain the entire BTS buffer between a single perf_output_begin() / perf_output_end() pair. 2009-09-18x86: Use section .data.page_aligned for the idt_table.Tim Abbott
The .data.idt section is just squashed into the .data.page_aligned output section by the linker script anyway, so it might as well be in the .data.page_aligned section. This eliminates all references to .data.idt on x86. Signed-off-by: Tim Abbott <tabbott@ksplice.com> Cc: Ingo Molnar <mingo@redhat.com> Signed-off-by: H. Peter Anvin <hpa@zytor.com>
2009-09-18x86: convert to use __HEAD and HEAD_TEXT macros.Tim Abbott
This has the consequence of changing the section name use for head code from ".text.head" to ".head.text". It also eliminates the ".text.head" output section (instead placing head code at the start of the .text output section), which should be harmless. This patch only changes the sections in the actual kernel, not those in the compressed boot loader. 2009-09-18x86: convert compressed loader to use __HEAD and HEAD_TEXT macros.Tim Abbott
This has the consequence of changing the section name use for head code from ".text.head" to ".head.text". Linus suggested that we merge the ".text.head" section with ".text" (presumably while preserving the fact that the head code starts at 0). When I tried this it caused the kernel to not boot. 2009-09-18x86: fix fragile computation of vsyscall addressAnders Kaseorg
Previously, the address of the vsyscall page (VSYSCALL_PHYS_ADDR, VSYSCALL_VIRT_ADDR) was computed by arithmetic on the address of the last section. This leads to bugs when new sections are inserted, such as the one fixed by commit d312ceda567ab91acd756cde95ac5fbc6b40ed40. Let's compute it from the current address instead. We use -1 to indicate no node affinity, so we need a signed type here or all sorts of bad things happen, like crashes in dev_attr_show as reported by Ingo: [ 158.058140] warning: `dbus-daemon' uses 32-bit capabilities (legacy support in use) [ 159.370562] BUG: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at (null) [ 159.372694] IP: [<ffffffff8143b722>] bitmap_scnprintf+0x72/0xd0 [ 159.372694] PGD 71d3e067 PUD 7052e067 PMD 0 [ 159.372694] Oops: 0000 [#1] SMP DEBUG_PAGEALLOC [ 159.372694] last sysfs file: /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:01.0/local_cpus [ 159.372694] CPU 0 [ 159.372694] Pid: 7364, comm: irqbalance Not tainted 2.6.31-tip #8043 System Product Name [ 159.372694] RIP: 0010:[<ffffffff8143b722>] [<ffffffff8143b722>] bitmap_scnprintf+0x72/0xd0 [ 159.372694] RSP: 0018:ffff8800712a1e38 EFLAGS: 00010246 [ 159.372694] RAX: 0000000000000000 RBX: 0000000000000000 RCX: 0000000000000000 [ 159.372694] RDX: 0000000000000000 RSI: 0000000000000004 RDI: ffff880077dc5000 [ 159.372694] RBP: ffff8800712a1e68 R08: 0000000000000001 R09: 0000000000000001 [ 159.372694] R10: ffffffff8215c47c R11: 0000000000000000 R12: 0000000000000000 [ 159.372694] R13: 0000000000000000 R14: 0000000000000ffe R15: ffff880077dc5000 [ 159.372694] FS: 00007f5f578f76f0(0000) GS:ffff880007000000(0000) knlGS:0000000000000000 [ 159.372694] CS: 0010 DS: 0000 ES: 0000 CR0: 000000008005003b [ 159.372694] CR2: 0000000000000000 CR3: 0000000071a77000 CR4: 00000000000006f0 [ 159.372694] DR0: 0000000000000000 DR1: 0000000000000000 DR2: 0000000000000000 [ 159.372694] DR3: ffffffff835109dc DR6: 00000000ffff0ff0 DR7: 0000000000000400 [ 159.372694] Process irqbalance (pid: 7364, threadinfo ffff8800712a0000, task ffff880070773000) [ 159.372694] Stack: [ 159.372694] 2222222222222222 ffff880077dc5000 fffffffffffffffb ffff88007d366b40 [ 159.372694] <0> ffff8800712a1f48 ffff88007d3840a0 ffff8800712a1e88 ffffffff8146332b [ 159.372694] <0> fffffffffffffff4 ffffffff82450718 ffff8800712a1ea8 ffffffff815a9a1f [ 159.372694] Call Trace: [ 159.372694] [<ffffffff8146332b>] local_cpus_show+0x3b/0x60 [ 159.372694] [<ffffffff815a9a1f>] dev_attr_show+0x2f/0x60 [ 159.372694] [<ffffffff8118ee6f>] sysfs_read_file+0xbf/0x1d0 [ 159.372694] [<ffffffff8112afe9>] vfs_read+0xc9/0x180 [ 159.372694] [<ffffffff8112c365>] sys_read+0x55/0x90 [ 159.372694] [<ffffffff810114f2>] system_call_fastpath+0x16/0x1b [ 159.372694] Code: 41 b9 01 00 00 00 44 8d 46 03 49 63 fc 0f 49 d3 c1 f8 1f 4c 01 ff c1 e8 1a c1 fa 06 41 c1 e8 02 8d 0c 03 48 63 d2 83 e1 3f 29 c1 <49> 8b 44 d5 00 48 c7 c2 8c 37 16 82 48 d3 e8 89 f1 44 89 f6 49 [ 159.372694] RIP [<ffffffff8143b722>] bitmap_scnprintf+0x72/0xd0 [ 159.372694] RSP <ffff8800712a1e38> [ 159.372694] CR2: 0000000000000000 [ 159.600828] ---[ end trace 35550c356e84e60c ]--- Reported-by: Ingo Molnar <mingo@elte.hu> Tested-by: Ingo Molnar <mingo@elte.hu> Signed-off-by: Jesse Barnes <jbarnes@virtuousgeek.org>
2009-09-18x86/PCI: default pcibus cpumask to all cpus if it lacks affinityDavid Rientjes
The early initialization of the pci bus to node mapping leaves all busses with a node id of -1 if it lacks memory affinity. Thus, cpumask_of_pcibus must return all online cpus for such busses. Signed-off-by: David Rientjes <rientjes@google.com> Signed-off-by: Jesse Barnes <jbarnes@virtuousgeek.org>
2009-09-18sunrpc/cache: use list_del_init for the list_head entries in cache_deferred_reqNeilBrown
Using list_del_init is generally safer than list_del, and it will allow us, in a subsequent patch, to see if an entry has already been processed or not. Signed-off-by: NeilBrown <neilb@suse.de> Signed-off-by: J. Bruce Fields <bfields@citi.umich.edu>
2009-09-18ASoC: DaVinci: Fixes to McASP configurationChaithrika U S
McASP register settings are not correct for DSP mode of operation. There is a channel swap initally. This patch provides fixes to the register values for proper working. Tested on DA830/OMAP-L137 EVM, DM6467 EVM. Signed-off-by: Chaithrika U S <chaithrika@ti.com> Signed-off-by: Mark Brown <broonie@opensource.wolfsonmicro.com>
2009-09-18ASoC: Blackfin I2S: fix resuming when device hasn't been usedCliff Cai
If the sound system hasn't been utilized yet and we suspend, then we attempt to save/restore using state that doesn't exist. So use a global handle instead to reconfigure properly.
