The main purpose for PSW restart will be kdump. Therefore customers will issue "system restart" for creating a dump. If kdump is not enabled, currently "PSW restart" will reboot the system and then no dump can be created any more. In order to still allow a manual stand-alone dump in the case a user issues "PSW restart" on a system that has not enabled kdump we now stop the system. 2011-08-24[S390] nss,initrd: kernel image and initrd must be in different segmentsHeiko Carstens
When IPL'ing from a block device and an NSS should be created we must make sure that the kernel image and the initrd are in different 1MB segments. Otherwise creating the NSS will fail. So we make sure the initrd is 4MB behind the end of the kernel image like we do already when IPL via the VM reader is performed. 2011-08-24ASoC: Tegra: wm8903 machine driver: Drop Ventana supportStephen Warren
Board file support for Ventana is not yet mainlined, and probably won't ever be given the move to Device-Tree. Consequently, the Ventana entry is being removed from arch/arm/tools/mach-types in the next merge window, since it was registered over a year ago. This will also remove function machine_is_ventana(), which is used by the ASoC Tegra WM8903 machine driver. This will cause compilation failures. Drop Ventana support to resolve this. Hopefully, in the not-too-distant future, tegra_wm8903.c will be able to configure itself from Device-Tree, and hence we'll be able to re-instate Ventana support just by creating a .dts file for the board. Also note that Aebl support is in a similar boat. However, that board isn't scheduled for deprecation for at least another 5 months, and perhaps we will have completely removed non-Device-Tree support from tegra_wm8903.c by then and/or adjusted mach-types policy. "4-finger scroll" is a gesture supported by some applications and operating systems. "Resting thumb" is when a clickpad user rests a finger (e.g., a thumb), in a "click zone" (typically the bottom of the touchpad) in anticipation of click+move=select gestures. Thus, "4-finger scroll + resting thumb" is a 5-finger gesture. To allow userspace to detect this gesture, we send BTN_TOOL_QUINTTAP. Synaptics image sensor touchpads track 5 fingers, but only report 2. This patch attempts to deal with some idiosyncrasies of these touchpads: * When there are 3 or more fingers, only two are reported. * The touchpad tracks the 5 fingers in slot[0] through slot[4]. * It always reports the lowest and highest valid slots in SGM and AGM packets, respectively. * The number of fingers is only reported in the SGM packet. However, the number of fingers can change either before or after an AGM packet. * Thus, if an SGM reports a different number of fingers than the last SGM, it is impossible to tell whether the intervening AGM corresponds to the old number of fingers or the new number of fingers. * For example, when going from 2->3 fingers, it is not possible to tell whether tell AGM contains slot[1] (old 2nd finger) or slot[2] (new 3rd finger). * When fingers are added one at at time, from 1->2->3, it is possible to track which slots are contained in the SGM and AGM packets: 1 finger: SGM = slot[0], no AGM 2 fingers: SGM = slot[0], AGM = slot[1] 3 fingers: SGM = slot[0], AGM = slot[2] * It is also possible to track which slot is contained in the SGM when 1 of 2 fingers is removed. This is because the touchpad sends a special (0,0,0) AGM packet whenever all fingers are removed except slot[0]: Last AGM == (0,0,0): SGM contains slot[1] Else: SGM contains slot[0] * However, once there are 3 fingers, if exactly 1 finger is removed, it is impossible to tell which 2 slots are contained in SGM and AGM. The (SGM,AGM) could be (0,1), (0,2), or (1,2). There is no way to know. * Similarly, if two fingers are simultaneously removed (3->1), then it is only possible to know if SGM still contains slot[0]. * Since it is not possible to reliably track which slot is being reported, we invalidate the tracking_id every time the number of fingers changes until this ambiguity is resolved when: a) All fingers are removed. b) 4 or 5 fingers are touched, generates an AGM-CONTACT packet. c) All fingers are removed except slot[0]. In this special case, the ambiguity is resolved since by the (0,0,0) AGM packet. Behavior of the driver: When 2 or more fingers are present on the touchpad, the kernel reports up to two MT-B slots containing the position data for two of the fingers reported by the touchpad. If the identity of a finger cannot be tracked when the number-of-fingers changes, the corresponding MT-B slot will be invalidated (track_id set to -1), and a new track_id will be assigned in a subsequent input event report. The driver always reports the total number of fingers using one of the EV_KEY/BTN_TOOL_*TAP events. This could differ from the number of valid MT-B slots for two reasons: a) There are more than 2 fingers on the pad. b) During ambiguous number-of-fingers transitions, the correct track_id for one or both of the slots cannot be determined, so the slots are invalidated. Thus, this is a hybrid singletouch/MT-B scheme. Userspace can detect this behavior by noting that the driver supports more EV_KEY/BTN_TOOL_*TAP events than its maximum EV_ABS/ABS_MT_SLOT. A Synaptics image sensor tracks 5 fingers, but can only report 2. The algorithm for choosing which 2 fingers to report and in which packet: Touchpad maintains 5 slots, numbered 0 to 4 Initially all slots are empty As new fingers are detected, assign them to the lowest available slots The touchpad always reports: SGM: lowest numbered non-empty slot AGM: highest numbered non-empty slot, if there is one In addition, these touchpads have a special AGM packet type which reports the number of fingers currently being tracked, and which finger is in each of the two slots. Unfortunately, these "TYPE=2" packets are only used when more than 3 fingers are being tracked. When less than 4 fingers are present, the 'w' value must be used to track how many fingers are present, and knowing which fingers are being reported is much more difficult, if not impossible. Synaptics makes (at least) two kinds of touchpad sensors: * Older pads use a profile sensor that could only infer the location of individual fingers based on the projection of their profiles onto row and column sensors. * Newer pads use an image sensor that can track true finger position using a two-dimensional sensor grid. Both sensor types support an "Advanced Gesture Mode": When multiple fingers are detected, the touchpad sends alternating "Advanced Gesture Mode" (AGM) and "Simple Gesture Mode" (SGM) packets. The AGM packets have w=2, and contain reduced resolution finger data The SGM packets have w={0,1} and contain full resolution finger data Profile sensors try to report the "upper" (larger y value) finger in the SGM packet, and the lower (smaller y value) in the AGM packet. However, due to the nature of the profile sensor, they easily get confused when fingers cross, and can start reporting the x-coordinate of one with the y-coordinate of the other. Thus, for profile sensors, "semi-mt" was created, which reports a "bounding box" created by pairing min and max coordinates of the two pairs of reported fingers. Image sensors can report the actual coordinates of two of the fingers present. This patch detects if the touchpad is an image sensor and reports finger data using the MT-B protocol. NOTE: This patch only adds partial support for 2-finger gestures. The proper interpretation of the slot contents when more than two fingers are present is left to later patches. Also, handling of 'number of fingers' transitions is incomplete. When we enter a 32-bit system call via SYSENTER or SYSCALL, we shuffle the arguments to match the int $0x80 calling convention. This was probably a design mistake, but it's what it is now. This causes errors if the system call as to be restarted. For SYSENTER, we have to invoke the instruction from the vdso as the return address is hardcoded. Accordingly, we can simply replace the jump in the vdso with an int $0x80 instruction and use the slower entry point for a post-restart. 2011-08-23staging: zcache: fix crash on high memory swapSeth Jennings
zcache_put_page() was modified to pass page_address(page) instead of the actual page structure. In combination with the function signature changes to tmem_put() and zcache_pampd_create(), zcache_pampd_create() tries to (re)derive the page structure from the virtual address. However, if the original page is a high memory page (or any unmapped page), this virt_to_page() fails because the page_address() in zcache_put_page() returned NULL. This patch changes zcache_put_page() and zcache_get_page() to pass the page structure instead of the page's virtual address, which may or may not exist. This reverts commit f3637a5f2e2eb391ff5757bc83fb5de8f9726464. It turns out that this breaks several drivers, one example being OMAP boards which use the on-board OMAP UARTs and the omap-serial driver that will not boot to userspace after the commit. Paul Walmsley reports that enabling CONFIG_DEBUG_SHIRQ reveals 'IRQ handler type mismatch' errors: IRQ handler type mismatch for IRQ 74 current handler: serial idle ... and the reason is that setting IRQF_ONESHOT will now result in those interrupt handlers having different IRQF flags, and thus being unsharable. So the commit log in the reverted commit: "Since it is required for those users and there is no difference for others it makes sense to add this flag unconditionally." is simply not true: there may not be any difference from a "actions at irq time", but there is a *big* difference wrt this flag testing irq management (see __setup_irq() in kernel/irq/manage.c). One solution may be to stop verifying IRQF_ONESHOT in __setup_irq(), but right now the safe course of action is to revert the change. Let's revisit this in a later merge window. 2011-08-23TTY: serial, document ignoring of uart->ops->startup errorJiri Slaby
When a user has SYS_ADMIN capabilities and uart->ops->startup returns an error in uart_startup, we silently drop the error. We then return 0 and behave as if it didn't fail. (Not quite, since we set TTY_IO_ERROR bit and leave ASYNC_INITIALIZED bit cleared.) This all is to allow setserial to work with improperly configured or unconfigured ports. User can thus set port properties and reconfigure properly. This patch only documents this behavior. tty_operations->remove is normally called like: queue_release_one_tty ->tty_shutdown ->tty_driver_remove_tty ->tty_operations->remove However tty_shutdown() is called from queue_release_one_tty() only if tty_operations->shutdown is NULL. But for pty, it is not. pty_unix98_shutdown() is used there as ->shutdown. So tty_operations->remove of pty (i.e. pty_unix98_remove()) is never called. This results in invalid pty_count. I.e. what can be seen in /proc/sys/kernel/pty/nr. I see this was already reported at: https://lkml.org/lkml/2009/11/5/370 But it was not fixed since then. This patch is kind of a hackish way. The problem lies in ->install. We allocate there another tty (so-called tty->link). So ->install is called once, but ->remove twice, for both tty and tty->link. The fix here is to count both tty and tty->link and divide the count by 2 for user. And to have ->remove called, let's make tty_driver_remove_tty() global and call that from pty_unix98_shutdown() (tty_operations->shutdown). 2011-08-238250: Fix race condition in serial8250_backup_timeout().Al Cooper
This is to fix an issue where output will suddenly become very slow. The problem occurs on 8250 UARTS with the hardware bug UART_BUG_THRE. BACKGROUND For normal UARTs (without UART_BUG_THRE): When the serial core layer gets new transmit data and the transmitter is idle, it buffers the data and calls the 8250s' serial8250_start_tx() routine which will simply enable the TX interrupt in the IER register and return. This should immediately fire a THRE interrupt and begin transmitting the data. For buggy UARTs (with UART_BUG_THRE): merely enabling the TX interrupt in IER does not necessarily generate a new THRE interrupt. Therefore, a background timer periodically checks to see if there is pending data, and starts transmission if that is the case. The bug happens on SMP systems when the system has nothing to transmit, the transmit interrupt is disabled and the following sequence occurs: - CPU0: The background timer routine serial8250_backup_timeout() starts and saves the state of the interrupt enable register (IER) and then disables all interrupts in IER. NOTE: The transmit interrupt (TI) bit is saved as disabled. - CPU1: The serial core gets data to transmit, grabs the port lock and calls serial8250_start_tx() which enables the TI in IER. - CPU0: serial8250_backup_timeout() waits for the port lock. - CPU1: finishes (with TI enabled) and releases the port lock. - CPU0: serial8250_backup_timeout() calls the interrupt routine which will transmit the next fifo's worth of data and then restores the IER from the previously saved value (TI disabled). At this point, as long as the serial core has more transmit data buffered, it will not call serial8250_start_tx() again and the background timer routine will slowly transmit the data. The fix is to have serial8250_start_tx() get the port lock before it saves the IER state and release it after restoring IER. This will prevent serial8250_start_tx() from running in parallel. Fortunately, it also sends a status report in this situation so we just reset the drm on every status report to keep the drm consistent.
