2013-04-26KVM: extend EMULATE_EXIT_USER to support different exit reasonsBharat Bhushan
Currently the instruction emulator code returns EMULATE_EXIT_USER and common code initializes the "run->exit_reason = .." and "vcpu->arch.hcall_needed = .." with one fixed reason. But there can be different reasons when emulator need to exit to user space. To support that the "run->exit_reason = .." and "vcpu->arch.hcall_needed = .." initialization is moved a level up to emulator. 2013-04-26nohz: Select VIRT_CPU_ACCOUNTING_GEN from full dynticks configFrederic Weisbecker
Turn the full dynticks passive dependency on VIRT_CPU_ACCOUNTING_GEN to an active one. The full dynticks Kconfig is currently hidden behind the full dynticks cputime accounting, which is an awkward and counter-intuitive layout: the user first has to select the dynticks cputime accounting in order to make the full dynticks feature to be visible. We definetly want it the other way around. The usual way to perform this kind of active dependency is use "select" on the depended target. Now we can't use the Kconfig "select" instruction when the target is a "choice". So this patch inspires on how the RCU subsystem Kconfig interact with its dependencies on SMP and PREEMPT: we make sure that cputime accounting can't propose another option than VIRT_CPU_ACCOUNTING_GEN when NO_HZ_FULL is selected by using the right "depends on" instruction for each cputime accounting choices. v2: Keep full dynticks cputime accounting available even without full dynticks, as per Paul McKenney's suggestion. 2013-04-26SUNRPC: Use gssproxy upcall for server RPCGSS authentication.Simo Sorce
The main advantge of this new upcall mechanism is that it can handle big tickets as seen in Kerberos implementations where tickets carry authorization data like the MS-PAC buffer with AD or the Posix Authorization Data being discussed in IETF on the krbwg working group. The Gssproxy program is used to perform the accept_sec_context call on the kernel's behalf. The code is changed to also pass the input buffer straight to upcall mechanism to avoid allocating and copying many pages as tokens can be as big (potentially more in future) as 64KiB. 2013-04-26SUNRPC: Add RPC based upcall mechanism for RPCGSS authSimo Sorce
This patch implements a sunrpc client to use the services of the gssproxy userspace daemon. In particular it allows to perform calls in user space using an RPC call instead of custom hand-coded upcall/downcall messages. Currently only accept_sec_context is implemented as that is all is needed for the server case. File server modules like NFS and CIFS can use full gssapi services this way, once init_sec_context is also implemented. For the NFS server case this code allow to lift the limit of max 2k krb5 tickets. This limit is prevents legitimate kerberos deployments from using krb5 authentication with the Linux NFS server as they have normally ticket that are many kilobytes large. It will also allow to lift the limitation on the size of the credential set (uid,gid,gids) passed down from user space for users that have very many groups associated. Currently the downcall mechanism used by rpc.svcgssd is limited to around 2k secondary groups of the 65k allowed by kernel structures. 2013-04-26regulator: ab3100: Fix regulator register error handlingAxel Lin
Ensure to unregister all regulators before return error in probe(). The regulator register order depends on the regulator ID pass to ab3100_regulator_register() function. Thus we need to scan ab3100_regulator_desc and find the index of successfully registered regulators, or alternatively just call ab3100_regulators_remove() to unregister all registered regulators. Since current code uses a static ab3100_regulators table, explicitly set reg->rdev = NULL after regulator_unregister() call to ensure calling ab3100_regulators_remove() in the unwind path always work. variable_is_present() accesses '__efivars' directly, but when called via gsmi_init() Michel reports observing the following crash, BUG: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at (null) IP: variable_is_present+0x55/0x170 Call Trace: register_efivars+0x106/0x370 gsmi_init+0x2ad/0x3da do_one_initcall+0x3f/0x170 The reason for the crash is that '__efivars' hasn't been initialised nor has it been registered with register_efivars() by the time the google EFI SMI driver runs. The gsmi code uses its own struct efivars, and therefore, a different variable list. Fix the above crash by passing the registered struct efivars to variable_is_present(), so that we traverse the correct list. 2013-04-26pinctrl: move subsystem mutex to pinctrl_dev structPatrice Chotard
This mutex avoids deadlock in case of use of multiple pin controllers. Before this modification, by using a global mutex, deadlock appeared when, for example, a call to pinctrl_pins_show() locked the pinctrl_mutex, called the ops->pin_dbg_show of a particular pin controller. If this pin controller needs I2C access to retrieve configuration information and I2C driver is using pinctrl to drive its pins, a call to pinctrl_select_state() try to lock again pinctrl_mutex which leads to a deadlock. Notice that the mutex grab from the two direction functions was moved into pinctrl_gpio_direction(). For several cases, we can't replace pinctrl_mutex by pctldev->mutex, because at this stage, pctldev is not accessible : - pinctrl_get()/pinctrl_put() - pinctrl_register_maps() So add respectively pinctrl_list_mutex and pinctrl_maps_mutex in order to protect pinctrl_list and pinctrl_maps list instead. Reintroduce pinctrldev_list_mutex in find_pinctrl_by_of_node(), pinctrl_find_and_add_gpio_range() pinctrl_request_gpio(), pinctrl_free_gpio(), pinctrl_gpio_direction(), pinctrl_devices_show(), pinctrl_register() and pinctrl_unregister() to protect pinctrldev_list. 2013-04-26TTY: fix atime/mtime regressionJiri Slaby
In commit b0de59b5733d ("TTY: do not update atime/mtime on read/write") we removed timestamps from tty inodes to fix a security issue and waited if something breaks. Well, 'w', the utility to find out logged users and their inactivity time broke. It shows that users are inactive since the time they logged in. To revert to the old behaviour while still preventing attackers to guess the password length, we update the timestamps in one-minute intervals by this patch. points Commit 4ae46be "Thermal: Introduce thermal_zone_trip_update()" introduced a regression causing the fan to be always on even when the system is idle. My original idea in that commit is that: - when the current temperature is above the trip point, keep the fan on, even if the temperature is dropping. - when the current temperature is below the trip point, turn on the fan when the temperature is raising, turn off the fan when the temperature is dropping. But this is what the code actually does: - when the current temperature is above the trip point, the fan keeps on. - when the current temperature is below the trip point, the fan is always on because thermal_get_trend() in driver/acpi/thermal.c returns THERMAL_TREND_RAISING. Thus the fan keeps running even if the system is idle. Fix this in drivers/acpi/thermal.c. 2013-04-26sched: Fix init NOHZ_IDLE flagVincent Guittot
On my SMP platform which is made of 5 cores in 2 clusters, I have the nr_busy_cpu field of sched_group_power struct that is not null when the platform is fully idle - which makes the scheduler unhappy. The root cause is: During the boot sequence, some CPUs reach the idle loop and set their NOHZ_IDLE flag while waiting for others CPUs to boot. But the nr_busy_cpus field is initialized later with the assumption that all CPUs are in the busy state whereas some CPUs have already set their NOHZ_IDLE flag. More generally, the NOHZ_IDLE flag must be initialized when new sched_domains are created in order to ensure that NOHZ_IDLE and nr_busy_cpus are aligned. This condition can be ensured by adding a synchronize_rcu() between the destruction of old sched_domains and the creation of new ones so the NOHZ_IDLE flag will not be updated with old sched_domain once it has been initialized. But this solution introduces a additionnal latency in the rebuild sequence that is called during cpu hotplug. As suggested by Frederic Weisbecker, another solution is to have the same rcu lifecycle for both NOHZ_IDLE and sched_domain struct. A new nohz_idle field is added to sched_domain so both status and sched_domain will share the same RCU lifecycle and will be always synchronized. In addition, there is no more need to protect nohz_idle against concurrent access as it is only modified by 2 exclusive functions called by local cpu. This solution has been prefered to the creation of a new struct with an extra pointer indirection for sched_domain. The synchronization is done at the cost of : - An additional indirection and a rcu_dereference for accessing nohz_idle. - We use only the nohz_idle field of the top sched_domain. On resume from CPU power down any trace hooks enabled in cpu_init() will get called before that function has done set_my_cpu_offset(), so any use of per-cpu variables by trace hook code will cause bad things to happen. Prevent this by marking the function notrace. This fixes lockups/crashes seen when enabling function tracer on TC2 with the not yet mainlined cpuidle driver. 2013-04-26GFS2: Flush work queue before clearing glock hash tablesBob Peterson
There was a timing window when a GFS2 file system was unmounted that caused GFS2 to call BUG() and panic the kernel. The call to BUG() is meant to ensure that the glock reference count, gl_ref, never gets down to zero and bounce back up again. What was happening during umount is that function gfs2_put_super was dequeing its glocks for well-known files. In particular, we saw it on the journal glock, sd_jinode_gh. The dequeue caused delayed work to be queued for the glock state machine, to transition the lock to an "unlocked" state. While the work was still queued, gfs2_put_super called gfs2_gl_hash_clear to clear out the glock hash tables. If the timing was just so, the glock work function would drop the reference count at the time when it was being checked for zero, and that caused BUG() to be called. This patch calls flush_workqueue before clearing the glock hash tables, thereby ensuring that the delayed work is executed before the hash tables are cleared, and therefore the reference count never goes to zero until the glock is cleared. One testbox of mine (Intel Nehalem, 16-way) uses MWAIT for its idle routine, which apparently can break out of its idle loop rather frequently, with high frequency. In that case NO_HZ_FULL=y kernels show high ksoftirqd overhead and constant context switching, because tick_nohz_stop_sched_tick() will, if delta_jiffies == 0, mis-identify this as a timer event - activating the TIMER_SOFTIRQ, which wakes up ksoftirqd. Fix this by treating delta_jiffies == 0 the same way we treat other short wakeups, delta_jiffies == 1. When we fetch an interrupt on the CCW console using tsch (via ccw_device_wait_idle formerly known as wait_cons_dev) we increment the irq count for the affected interruption class but it is not accounted as an IO interrupt. 2013-04-26s390/memory hotplug: prevent offline of active memory incrementsHeiko Carstens
In case a machine supports memory hotplug all active memory increments present at IPL time have been initialized with a "usecount" of 1. This is wrong if the memory increment size is larger than the memory section size of the memory hotplug code. If that is the case the usecount must be initialized with the number of memory sections that fit into one memory increment. Otherwise it is possible to put a memory increment into standby state even if there are still active sections. Afterwards addressing exceptions might happen which cause the kernel to panic. However even worse, if a memory increment was put into standby state and afterwards into active state again, it's contents would have been zeroed, leading to memory corruption. This was only an issue for machines that support standby memory and have at least 256GB memory. This is broken since commit fdb1bb15 "[S390] sclp/memory hotplug: fix initial usecount of increments".
