__hyp_stub_install duplicates quite a bit of safe_svcmode_maskall by forcing the CPU back to SVC. This is unnecessary, as safe_svcmode_maskall is called just after. Furthermore, the way we build SPSR_hyp is buggy as we fail to mask the interrupts, leading to interesting behaviours on TC2 + UEFI. The fix is to simply remove this code and rely on safe_svcmode_maskall to do the right thing. 2013-01-10ARM: virt: Avoid bx instruction for compatibility with <=ARMv4Dave Martin
Non-T variants of ARMv4 do not support the bx instruction. However, __hyp_stub_install is always called from the same instruction set used to build the bulk of the kernel, so bx should not be necessary. This patch uses the traditional "mov pc" instead of bx. commit b080935c8638e08134629d0a9ebdf35669bec14d kvm: Directly account vtime to system on guest switch also removed the irq_disable/enable around kvm guest switch, which is correct in itself. Unfortunately, there is a BUG ON that (correctly) checks for preemptible to cover the call to rcu later on. (Introduced with commit 8fa2206821953a50a3a02ea33fcfb3ced2fd9997 KVM: make guest mode entry to be rcu quiescent state) This check might trigger depending on the kernel config. Lets make sure that no preemption happens during kvm_guest_enter. We can enable preemption again after the call to rcu_virt_note_context_switch returns. Please note that we continue to run s390 guests with interrupts enabled. This partially reverts commit 6c085a728cf000ac1865d66f8c9b52935558b328 Author: Chris Wilson <chris@chris-wilson.co.uk> Date: Mon Aug 20 11:40:46 2012 +0200 drm/i915: Track unbound pages Closer inspection of that patch revealed a bunch of unrelated changes in the shrinker: - The shrinker count is now in pages instead of objects. - For counting the shrinkable objects the old code only looked at the inactive list, the new code looks at all bounds objects (including pinned ones). That is obviously in addition to the new unbound list. - The shrinker cound is no longer scaled with sysctl_vfs_cache_pressure. Note though that with the default tuning value of vfs_cache_pressue = 100 this doesn't affect the shrinker behaviour. - When actually shrinking objects, the old code first dropped purgeable objects, then normal (inactive) objects. Only then did it, in a last-ditch effort idle the gpu and evict everything. The new code omits the intermediate step of evicting normal inactive objects. Safe for the first change, which seems benign, and the shrinker count scaling, which is a bit a different story, the endresult of all these changes is that the shrinker is _much_ more likely to fall back to the last-ditch resort of idling the gpu and evicting everything. The old code could only do that if something else evicted lots of objects meanwhile (since without any other changes the nr_to_scan will be smaller than the object count). Reverting the vfs_cache_pressure behaviour itself is a bit bogus: Only dentry/inode object caches should scale their shrinker counts with vfs_cache_pressure. Originally I've had that change reverted, too. But Chris Wilson insisted that it's too bogus and shouldn't again see the light of day. Hence revert all these other changes and restore the old shrinker behaviour, with the minor adjustment that we now first scan the unbound list, then the inactive list for each object category (purgeable or normal). A similar patch has been tested by a few people affected by the gen4/5 hangs which started to appear in 3.7, which some people bisected to the "drm/i915: Track unbound pages" commit. But just disabling the unbound logic alone didn't change things at all. Note that this patch doesn't fix the referenced bugs, it only hides the underlying bug(s) well enough to restore pre-3.7 behaviour. The key to achieve that is to massively reduce the likelyhood of going into a full gpu stall and evicting everything. v2: Reword commit message a bit, taking Chris Wilson's comment into account. v3: On Chris Wilson's insistency, do not reinstate the rather bogus vfs_cache_pressure change. This patch is brought to you by the letter 'H'. Commit 20b279 breaks compatiblity with older perf binaries when run with precise modifier (:p or :pp) by requiring the exclude_guest attribute to be set. Older binaries default exclude_guest to 0 (ie., wanting guest-based samples) unless host only profiling is requested (:H modifier). The workaround for older binaries is to add H to the modifier list (e.g., -e cycles:ppH - toggles exclude_guest to 1). This was deemed unacceptable by Linus: https://lkml.org/lkml/2012/12/12/570 Between family in town and the fresh snow in Breckenridge there is no time left to be working on the proper fix for this over the holidays. In the New Year I have more pressing problems to resolve -- like some memory leaks in perf which are proving to be elusive -- although the aforementioned snow is probably why they are proving to be elusive. Either way I do not have any spare time to work on this and from the time I have managed to spend on it the solution is more difficult than just moving to a new exclude_guest flag (does not work) or flipping the logic to include_guest (which is not as trivial as one would think). So, two options: silently force exclude_guest on as suggested by Gleb which means no impact to older perf binaries or revert the original patch which caused the breakage. This patch does the latter -- reverts the original patch that introduced the regression. The problem can be revisited in the future as time allows. 2013-01-10arm64: mm: introduce present, faulting entries for PAGE_NONEWill Deacon
This is mostly a port of dbf62d50067e ("ARM: mm: introduce L_PTE_VALID for page table entries") and 26ffd0d43b18 ("ARM: mm: introduce present, faulting entries for PAGE_NONE") from ARM, which makes use of present, faulting page table entries for page table entries mapped as PROT_NONE. The main difference with this implementation is that we can make use of the two pte type bits in order to avoid allocating a software bit for identifying PROT_NONE pages, instead reserving the 10b suffix for these types of mappings. This is required to prevent users from accessing such pages via syscalls such as read/write over a pipe. 2013-01-10arm64: vdso: remove broken, redundant sequence counting for timezonesWill Deacon
This patch is an arm64 version of ce73ec6db47a ("powerpc/vdso: Remove redundant locking in update_vsyscall_tz()"). Timezone data is not protected, so the sequence counter is not required to ensure consistency. Furthermore, having multiple paths updating the counter leads to a race between update_vsyscall and update_vsyscall_tz, so remove the timezone sequence counting from both the kernel and the vdso. 2013-01-10powerpc/perf: Fix for PMCs not making progressMichael Neuling
On POWER7 when we have really small counts left before overflow, we can take a PMU IRQ, but the PMC gets wound back to just before the overflow. If the kernel is setting the PMC to a value just before the overflow, we can get interrupted again without the PMC making any progress (ie another buggy overflow). In this case, we can end up making no forward progress, with the PMC interrupt returning us to the same count over and over. The below detects when we are making no forward progress (ie. delta = 0) and then increases the amount left before the overflow. This stops us from locking up. 2013-01-10powerpc/perf: Fix finding overflowed PMC in interruptMichael Neuling
If a PMC is about to overflow on a counter that's on an active perf event (ie. less than 256 from the end) and a _different_ PMC overflows just at this time (a PMC that's not on an active perf event), we currently mark the event as found, but in reality it's not as it's likely the other PMC that caused the IRQ. Since we mark it as found the second catch all for overflows doesn't run, and we don't reset the overflowing PMC ever. Hence we keep hitting that same PMC IRQ over and over and don't reset the actual overflowing counter. This is a rewrite of the perf interrupt handler for book3s to get around this. We now check to see if any of the PMCs have actually overflowed (ie >= 0x80000000). If yes, record it for active counters and just reset it for inactive counters. If it's not overflowed, then we check to see if it's one of the buggy power7 counters and if it is, record it and continue. If none of the PMCs match this, then we make note that we couldn't find the PMC that caused the IRQ. 2013-01-10powerpc/eeh: Fix crash when adding a device in a slot with DDWThadeu Lima de Souza Cascardo
The DDW code uses a eeh_dev struct from the pci_dev. However, this is not set until eeh_add_device_late is called. Since pci_bus_add_devices is called before eeh_add_device_late, the PCI devices are added to the bus, making drivers' probe hooks to be called. These will call set_dma_mask, which will call the DDW code, which will require the eeh_dev struct from pci_dev. This would result in a crash, due to a NULL dereference. Calling eeh_add_device_late after pci_bus_add_devices would make the system BUG, because device files shouldn't be added to devices there were not added to the system. So, a new function is needed to add such files only after pci_bus_add_devices have been called. 2013-01-10powerpc/iommu: Prevent false TCE leak messageThadeu Lima de Souza Cascardo
When a device DMA window includes the address 0, it's reserved in the TCE bitmap to avoid returning that address to drivers. When the device is removed, the bitmap is checked for any mappings not removed by the driver, indicating a possible DMA mapping leak. Since the reserved address is not cleared, a message is printed, warning of such a leak. Check for the reservation, and clear it before checking for any other standing mappings. 2013-01-10powerpc: Hardware breakpoints rewrite to handle non DABR breakpoint registersMichael Neuling
This is a rewrite so that we don't assume we are using the DABR throughout the code. We now use the arch_hw_breakpoint to store the breakpoint in a generic manner in the thread_struct, rather than storing the raw DABR value. The ptrace GET/SET_DEBUGREG interface currently passes the raw DABR in from userspace. We keep this functionality, so that future changes (like the POWER8 DAWR), will still fake the DABR to userspace.
