git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/trace/linux-trace Pull tracing fixes from Steven Rostedt: - Fix adding a new fgraph callback after function graph tracing has already started. If the new caller does not initialize its hash before registering the fgraph_ops, it can cause a NULL pointer dereference. Fix this by adding a new parameter to ftrace_graph_enable_direct() passing in the newly added gops directly and not rely on using the fgraph_array[], as entries in the fgraph_array[] must be initialized. Assign the new gops to the fgraph_array[] after it goes through ftrace_startup_subops() as that will properly initialize the gops->ops and initialize its hashes. - Fix a memory leak in fgraph storage memory test. If the "multiple fgraph storage on a function" boot up selftest fails in the registering of the function graph tracer, it will not free the memory it allocated for the filter. Break the loop up into two where it allocates the filters first and then registers the functions where any errors will do the appropriate clean ups. - Only clear the timerlat timers if it has an associated kthread. In the rtla tool that uses timerlat, if it was killed just as it was shutting down, the signals can free the kthread and the timer. But the closing of the timerlat files could cause the hrtimer_cancel() to be called on the already freed timer. As the kthread variable is is set to NULL when the kthreads are stopped and the timers are freed it can be used to know not to call hrtimer_cancel() on the timer if the kthread variable is NULL. - Use a cpumask to keep track of osnoise/timerlat kthreads The timerlat tracer can use user space threads for its analysis. With the killing of the rtla tool, the kernel can get confused between if it is using a user space thread to analyze or one of its own kernel threads. When this confusion happens, kthread_stop() can be called on a user space thread and bad things happen. As the kernel threads are per-cpu, a bitmask can be used to know when a kernel thread is used or when a user space thread is used. - Add missing interface_lock to osnoise/timerlat stop_kthread() The stop_kthread() function in osnoise/timerlat clears the osnoise kthread variable, and if it was a user space thread does a put_task on it. But this can race with the closing of the timerlat files that also does a put_task on the kthread, and if the race happens the task will have put_task called on it twice and oops. - Add cond_resched() to the tracing_iter_reset() loop. The latency tracers keep writing to the ring buffer without resetting when it issues a new "start" event (like interrupts being disabled). When reading the buffer with an iterator, the tracing_iter_reset() sets its pointer to that start event by walking through all the events in the buffer until it gets to the time stamp of the start event. In the case of a very large buffer, the loop that looks for the start event has been reported taking a very long time with a non preempt kernel that it can trigger a soft lock up warning. Add a cond_resched() into that loop to make sure that doesn't happen. - Use list_del_rcu() for eventfs ei->list variable It was reported that running loops of creating and deleting kprobe events could cause a crash due to the eventfs list iteration hitting a LIST_POISON variable. This is because the list is protected by SRCU but when an item is deleted from the list, it was using list_del() which poisons the "next" pointer. This is what list_del_rcu() was to prevent. * tag 'trace-v6.11-rc4' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/trace/linux-trace: tracing/timerlat: Add interface_lock around clearing of kthread in stop_kthread() tracing/timerlat: Only clear timer if a kthread exists tracing/osnoise: Use a cpumask to know what threads are kthreads eventfs: Use list_del_rcu() for SRCU protected list variable tracing: Avoid possible softlockup in tracing_iter_reset() tracing: Fix memory leak in fgraph storage selftest tracing: fgraph: Fix to add new fgraph_ops to array after ftrace_startup_subops()
2024-09-05x86/sgx: Log information when a node lacks an EPC sectionAaron Lu
For optimized performance, firmware typically distributes EPC sections evenly across different NUMA nodes. However, there are scenarios where a node may have both CPUs and memory but no EPC section configured. For example, in an 8-socket system with a Sub-Numa-Cluster=2 setup, there are a total of 16 nodes. Given that the maximum number of supported EPC sections is 8, it is simply not feasible to assign one EPC section to each node. This configuration is not incorrect - SGX will still operate correctly; it is just not optimized from a NUMA standpoint. For this reason, log a message when a node with both CPUs and memory lacks an EPC section. This will provide users with a hint as to why they might be experiencing less-than-ideal performance when running SGX enclaves. 2024-09-05x86/sgx: Fix deadlock in SGX NUMA node searchAaron Lu
When the current node doesn't have an EPC section configured by firmware and all other EPC sections are used up, CPU can get stuck inside the while loop that looks for an available EPC page from remote nodes indefinitely, leading to a soft lockup. Note how nid_of_current will never be equal to nid in that while loop because nid_of_current is not set in sgx_numa_mask. Also worth mentioning is that it's perfectly fine for the firmware not to setup an EPC section on a node. While setting up an EPC section on each node can enhance performance, it is not a requirement for functionality. Rework the loop to start and end on *a* node that has SGX memory. This avoids the deadlock looking for the current SGX-lacking node to show up in the loop when it never will. 2024-09-05kbuild: rust: replace proc macros dependency on `core.o` with the version textMiguel Ojeda
With the `RUSTC_VERSION_TEXT` rebuild support in place, now proc macros can depend on that instead of `core.o`. This means that both the `core` and `macros` crates can be built in parallel, and that touching `core.o` does not trigger a rebuild of the proc macros. This could be accomplished using the same approach as for `core` (i.e. depending directly on `include/config/RUSTC_VERSION_TEXT`). However, that is considered an implementation detail [1], and thus it is best to avoid it. Instead, let fixdep find a string that we explicitly write down in the source code for this purpose (like it is done for `include/linux/compiler-version.h`), which we can easily do (unlike for `core`) since this is our own source code. 2024-09-05kbuild: rust: rebuild if the version text changesMiguel Ojeda
Now that `RUSTC_VERSION_TEXT` exists, use it to rebuild `core` when the version text changes (which in turn will trigger a rebuild of all the kernel Rust code). This also applies to proc macros (which only work with the `rustc` that compiled them), via the already existing dependency on `core.o`. That is cleaned up in the next commit. However, this does not cover host programs written in Rust, which is the same case in the C side. This is accomplished by referencing directly the generated file, instead of using the `fixdep` header trick, since we cannot change the Rust standard library sources. This is not too much of a burden, since it only needs to be done for `core`. Re-run Kconfig if we detect the Rust compiler has changed via the version text, like it is done for C. 2024-09-05kbuild: rust: add `CONFIG_RUSTC_VERSION`Miguel Ojeda
Now that we support several Rust versions, introduce `CONFIG_RUSTC_VERSION` so that it can be used in Kconfig to enable and disable configuration options based on the `rustc` version. The approach taken resembles `pahole`'s -- see commit 613fe1692377 ("kbuild: Add CONFIG_PAHOLE_VERSION"), i.e. a simple version parsing without trying to identify several kinds of compilers, since so far there is only one (`rustc`). However, unlike `pahole`'s, we also print a zero if executing failed for any reason, rather than checking if the command is found and executable (which still leaves things like a file that exists and is executable, but e.g. is built for another platform [1]). An equivalent approach to the one here was also submitted for `pahole` [2]. Commit ed5cc702d311 ("block: Add config option to not allow writing to mounted devices") added a Kconfig option along with a kernel command-line tuning to control writes to mounted block devices, as a means to deal with fuzzers like Syzkaller, that provokes kernel crashes by directly writing on block devices bypassing the filesystem (so the FS has no awareness and cannot cope with that). 2024-09-05docs: kerneldoc-preamble.sty: Suppress extra spaces in CJK literal blocksAkira Yokosawa
In zh_CN part of translations.pdf, there are several ASCII-art diagrams whose vertical lines look sometimes jagged. This is due to the interference between default settings of xeCJK and fancyvrb (employed in sphinxVerbatim env), where extra space is inserted between a latin char and a non-latin char when they are next to each other (i.e., no explicit white space). This issue can be suppressed by invoking \CJKsetecglue{} at the beginning of every sphinxVerbatim enviornment. \AtBeginEnvironment, provided by the etoolbox package, is useful in this case.
