2013-11-07ACPI / hotplug: Carry out PCI root eject directlyRafael J. Wysocki
Since _handle_hotplug_event_root() is run from the ACPI hotplug workqueue, it doesn't need to queue up a work item to eject a PCI host bridge on the same workqueue. It is required to do get_device() on the struct acpi_device in question before passing it to acpi_bus_hot_remove_device() through acpi_os_hotplug_execute(), because acpi_bus_hot_remove_device() calls acpi_scan_hot_remove() that does put_device() on that object. The ACPI PCI root removal routine, handle_root_bridge_removal(), doesn't do that, which may lead to premature freeing of the device object or to executing put_device() on an object that has been freed already. 2013-11-07ACPI / hotplug: Refuse to hot-remove all objects with disabled hotplugRafael J. Wysocki
In theory, an ACPI device object may be the parent of another device object whose hotplug is disabled by user space through its scan handler. In that case, the eject operation targeting the parent should fail as though the parent's own hotplug was disabled, but currently this is not the case, because acpi_scan_hot_remove() doesn't check the disable/enable hotplug status of the children of the top-most object passed to it. To fix this, modify acpi_bus_offline_companions() to return an error code if hotplug is disabled for the given device object. [Also change the name of the function to acpi_bus_offline(), because it is not only about companions any more, and change the name of acpi_bus_online_companions() accordingly.] Make acpi_scan_hot_remove() propagate that error to its callers. 2013-11-07ACPI / scan: Start matching drivers after trying scan handlersRafael J. Wysocki
ACPI scan handlers should always be attached to struct acpi_device objects before any ACPI drivers, but there is a window during which a driver may be attached to a struct acpi_device before checking if there is a matching scan handler. Namely, that will happen if an ACPI driver module is loaded during acpi_bus_scan() right after the first namespace walk is complete and before the given device is processed by the second namespace walk. To prevent that from happening, set the match_driver flags of struct acpi_device objects right before running device_attach() for them in acpi_bus_device_attach(). Signed-off-by: Rafael J. Since acpi_pci_slot_init() is now called from acpi_pci_init() and pci-acpi.h contains its header, remove that header (and the empty definition of that function for CONFIG_ACPI_PCI_SLOT unset) from internal.h as it doesn't have to be there any more. 2013-11-07ARM: 7872/1: Support arch_irq_work_raise() via self IPIsStephen Boyd
By default, IRQ work is run from the tick interrupt (see irq_work_run() in update_process_times()). When we're in full NOHZ mode, restarting the tick requires the use of IRQ work and if the only place we run IRQ work is in the tick interrupt we have an unbreakable cycle. Implement arch_irq_work_raise() via self IPIs to break this cycle and get the tick started again. Note that we implement this via IPIs which are only available on SMP builds. This shouldn't be a problem because full NOHZ is only supported on SMP builds anyway. The ARM architecture reference specifies that the IT state bits in the PSR must be all zeros in ARM mode or behavior is unspecified. On the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4/Krait architecture CPUs the processor continues to consider the IT state bits while in ARM mode. This makes it so that some instructions are skipped by the CPU. 2013-11-06PCI: Add x86_msi.msi_mask_irq() and msix_mask_irq()Konrad Rzeszutek Wilk
Certain platforms do not allow writes in the MSI-X BARs to setup or tear down vector values. To combat against the generic code trying to write to that and either silently being ignored or crashing due to the pagetables being marked R/O this patch introduces a platform override. Note that we keep two separate, non-weak, functions default_mask_msi_irqs() and default_mask_msix_irqs() for the behavior of the arch_mask_msi_irqs() and arch_mask_msix_irqs(), as the default behavior is needed by x86 PCI code. For Xen, which does not allow the guest to write to MSI-X tables - as the hypervisor is solely responsible for setting the vector values - we implement two nops. This fixes a Xen guest crash when passing a PCI device with MSI-X to the guest. See the bugzilla for more details. Ages ago, drivers could return values greater than zero from their probe function and this would be regarded as success. But after f3ec4f87d607 ("PCI: change device runtime PM settings for probe and remove") and 967577b06241 ("PCI/PM: Keep runtime PM enabled for unbound PCI devices"), we set dev->driver to NULL if the driver's probe function returns a value greater than zero. __pci_device_probe() treats this as success, and drivers can still mostly work even with dev->driver == NULL, but PCI power management doesn't work, and we don't call the driver's remove function on rmmod. 2013-11-06scripts/kernel-doc: make unknown function prototype a Warning instead of an ↵Randy Dunlap
Error When scripts/kernel-doc cannot understand a function prototype, it had been generating a fatal error and stopping immediately. Make this a Warning instead of an Error and keep going. Note that this can happen if the kernel-doc notation that is being parsed is not actually a function prototype; maybe it's a struct or something else, so I added "function" to the warning message to try to make it clearer that scripts/kernel-doc is looking for a function prototype here. The duration field of print_graph_duration() can also be used to do the space filling by passing an enum in it: DURATION_FILL_FULL DURATION_FILL_START DURATION_FILL_END The problem is that these are enums and defined as negative, but the duration field is unsigned long long. Most archs are fine with this but blackfin fails to compile because of it: kernel/built-in.o: In function `print_graph_duration': kernel/trace/trace_functions_graph.c:782: undefined reference to `__ucmpdi2' Overloading a unsigned long long with an signed enum is just bad in principle. We can accomplish the same thing by using part of the flags field instead. In system_tr_open(), the filp->private_data can be assigned the 'dir' variable even if it was freed. This is on the error path, and is harmless because the error return code will prevent filp->private_data from being used. But for correctness, we should not assign it to a recently freed variable, as that can cause static tools to give false warnings. Also have both subsystem_open() and system_tr_open() return -ENODEV if tracing has been disabled. 2013-11-06perf/ftrace: Fix paranoid level for enabling function tracerSteven Rostedt
The current default perf paranoid level is "1" which has "perf_paranoid_kernel()" return false, and giving any operations that use it, access to normal users. Unfortunately, this includes function tracing and normal users should not be allowed to enable function tracing by default. The proper level is defined at "-1" (full perf access), which "perf_paranoid_tracepoint_raw()" will only give access to. Use that check instead for enabling function tracing. Currently xol_get_insn_slot() assumes that we should simply copy arch_uprobe->insn[] which is (ignoring arch_uprobe_analyze_insn) just the copy of the original insn. This is not true for arm which needs to create another insn to execute it out-of-line. So this patch simply adds the new member, ->ixol into the union. I debugging a log tail issue on a RHEL6 kernel, I added these trace points to trace log items being added, moved and removed in the AIL and how that affected the log tail LSN that was written to the log. They were very helpful in that they immediately identified the cause of the problem being seen. Hence I'd like to always have them available for use. 2013-11-06tracing: Open tracer when ftrace_dump_on_oops is usedCody P Schafer
With ftrace_dump_on_oops, we previously did not open the tracer in question, sometimes causing the trace output to be useless. For example, the function_graph tracer with tracing_thresh set dumped via ftrace_dump_on_oops would show a series of '}' indented at different levels, but no function names. call trace->open() (and do a few other fixups copied from the normal dump path) to make the output more intelligible.
