2013-08-20input: document gamepad API and add extra keycodesDavid Herrmann
Until today all gamepad input drivers report their data differently. It is nearly impossible to write applications for more than one device in a generic way. Therefore, this patch introduces a uniform gamepad API which will be used for all new drivers. Instead of mapping buttons by their labels, we now map them by position. This allows applications to work with any gamepad regardless of the labels on the buttons. Furthermore, we standardize the ABS_* codes for analog triggers and sticks. For D-Pads the long overdue BTN_DPAD_* codes are introduced. They should be fairly obvious how to use. To avoid confusion, the action buttons now have BTN_EAST/SOUTH/WEST/NORTH aliases. 2013-08-19rcu: Update RTFP documentationPaul E. McKenney
Note that this commit also updates the formatting of serveral of the bibtex entries to conform to that of my .bib files. I started accumulating entries back in the 1980s, back when bibtex insisted that comma (",") was a separator, not a terminator. This rule forced commas to the fronts of lines. 25 years later, bibtex allows commas to be terminators, but I am too lazy to rework all my .bib files. Keeping the same format as my .bib files allows my to simply incorporate my RCU.bib file into Documentation/RCU/RTFP.txt, which is much easier than my earlier practice of keeping track of what had changed and adding individual entries. (I sometimes find relevant papers that were published some years back, for example.) In addition, this change adds entries for papers published in the last year or so. Signed-off-by: Paul E. [ this is a follow-up to this discussion: http://archive.arm.linux.org.uk/lurker/message/20130730.230827.a1ceb12a.en.html ] This patchset renames all uses of "bcm," name bindings to "brcm," as they were done prior to knowing that brcm had already been standardized as Broadcom vendor prefix (in Documentation/devicetree/bindings/vendor-prefixes.txt). 2013-08-19clk: add support for clock reparent on set_rateJames Hogan
Add core support to allow clock implementations to select the best parent clock when rounding a rate, e.g. the one which can provide the closest clock rate to that requested. This is by way of adding a new clock op, determine_rate(), which is like round_rate() but has an extra parameter to allow the clock implementation to optionally select a different parent clock. The core then takes care of reparenting the clock when setting the rate. The parent change takes place with the help of some new private data members. struct clk::new_parent specifies a clock's new parent (NULL indicates no change), and struct clk::new_child specifies a clock's new child (whose new_parent member points back to it). The purpose of these are to allow correct walking of the future tree for notifications prior to actually reparenting any clocks, specifically to skip child clocks who are being reparented to another clock (they will be notified via the new parent), and to include any new child clock. These pointers are set by clk_calc_subtree(), and the new_child pointer gets cleared when a child is actually reparented to avoid duplicate POST_RATE_CHANGE notifications. Each place where round_rate() is called, determine_rate() is checked first and called in preference. This restructures a few of the call sites to simplify the logic into if/else blocks. 2013-08-19drm: don't call ->firstopen for KMS driversDaniel Vetter
It has way too much potential for driver writers to do stupid things like delayed hw setup because the load sequence is somehow racy (e.g. the imx driver in staging). So don't call it for modesetting drivers, which reduces the complexity of the drm core -> driver interface a notch. v2: Don't forget to update DocBook. v3: Go with Laurent's slightly more elaborate proposal for the DocBook update. Add a few words on top of his diff to elaborate a bit on what KMS drivers should and shouldn't do in lastclose. 2013-08-18rcu: Fix rcu_barrier() documentationPaul E. McKenney
There was a time when rcu_barrier() was guaranteed to wait for at least a grace period, but that time ended due to energy-efficiency concerns. So now rcu_barrier() is a no-op if there are no RCU callbacks queued in the system. This commit updates the documentation to reflect this change. Now, rcu_barrier() often does wait for a grace period, so, one could imagine some modification to rcu_barrier() to more efficiently handle cases where both rcu_barrier() and a grace period are needed. But this must wait until someone shows a real-world need for a change. Reported-by: Bob Copeland <bob@cozybit.com> Reported-by: Johannes Berg <johannes@sipsolutions.net> Signed-off-by: Paul E. 2013-08-19drm: remove FASYNC supportDaniel Vetter
So I've stumbled over drm_fasync and wondered what it does. Digging that up is quite a story. First I've had to read up on what this does and ended up being rather bewildered why peopled loved signals so much back in the days that they've created SIGIO just for that ... Then I wondered how this ever works, and what that strange "No-op." comment right above it should mean. After all calling the core fasync helper is pretty obviously not a noop. After reading through the kernels FASYNC implementation I've noticed that signals are only sent out to the processes attached with FASYNC by calling kill_fasync. No merged drm driver has ever done that. After more digging I've found out that the only driver that ever used this is the so called GAMMA driver. I've frankly never heard of such a gpu brand ever before. Now FASYNC seems to not have been the only bad thing with that driver, since Dave Airlie removed it from the drm driver with prejudice: commit 1430163b4bbf7b00367ea1066c1c5fe85dbeefed Author: Dave Airlie <airlied@linux.ie> Date: Sun Aug 29 12:04:35 2004 +0000 Drop GAMMA DRM from a great height ... Long story short, the drm fasync support seems to be doing absolutely nothing. And the only user of it was never merged into the upstream kernel. And we don't need any fops->fasync callback since the fcntl implementation in the kernel already implements the noop case correctly. So stop this particular cargo-cult and rip it all out. v2: Kill drm_fasync assignments in rcar (newly added) and imx drivers (somehow I've missed that one in staging). Also drop the reference in the drm DocBook. ARM compile-fail reported by Rob Clark. v3: Move the removal of dev->buf_asnyc assignment in drm_setup to this patch here. v4: Actually git add ... tsk. git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/sarah/xhci into usb-next Sarah writes: xhci: Platform updates, 64-bit DMA, and trace events for 3.12. Hi Greg, This pull request includes one new feature for the xhci-plat driver (device tree support). Felipe was fine with the patch last I checked, but hadn't provided an official Acked-by line. This pull request also includes 13 patches from my FOSS Outreach Program for Women (OPW) intern, Xenia. She fixed a bug in the xHCI driver so that the driver can allocate 64-bit consistent DMA, converted the driver to use dynamic debugging, and added a bunch of new trace events for the xHCI driver. The python plugin for trace-cmd should be up on git hub shortly, although the trace events are usable without it. I'm very happy with the progress that Xenia has made, and I look forward to her future contributions to the Linux kernel. Sarah Sharp
