2023-08-24scsi: snic: Fix double free in snic_tgt_create()Zhu Wang
Commit 41320b18a0e0 ("scsi: snic: Fix possible memory leak if device_add() fails") fixed the memory leak caused by dev_set_name() when device_add() failed. However, it did not consider that 'tgt' has already been released when put_device(&tgt->dev) is called. Remove kfree(tgt) in the error path to avoid double free of 'tgt' and move put_device(&tgt->dev) after the removed kfree(tgt) to avoid a use-after-free. 2023-08-24scsi: st: Add third party poweron reset handlingJohn Meneghini
Many tape devices will automatically rewind following a poweron/reset. This can result in data loss as other operations in the driver can write to the tape when the position is unknown. E.g. MTEOM can write a filemark at the beginning of the tape. This patch adds code to detect poweron/reset unit attentions and prevents the driver from writing to the tape when the position could be unknown. Customer reported problem description: We have experienced an issue with the SCSI tape driver (st) which has led to data loss for us on two separate occasions in production, as well as in a third case in which we were able to reproduce the failure in our test environment. The tape device involved is an Amazon Tape Gateway, a virtual tape library (VTL) appliance which presents as a series of iSCSI targets (multiple tape drives and a changer) and is backed by storage in Amazon S3. The problem is a general one and not limited to any particular SCSI transport or tape device, though the nature of both iSCSI and the VTL make data loss somewhat more likely with this combination than with a physical tape drive. The observed behavior occurs when an error causes the VTL tape gateway process (on the appliance) to crash and restart. This interrupts the iSCSI TCP connections and, when it occurs during a write, causes the write to fail with EIO. However, we then find that the virtual tape in question is now completely blank. We raised this issue with AWS support, thinking this must be a bug in the VTL appliance, but that turns out not to be the case. Per AWS support, when the gateway crashes in this manner, its notion of the current tape position is reset to the beginning of the tape. It also sets a unit attention condition, such that the next request results in a CHECK CONDITION status with sense key UNIT ATTENTION and asc/ascq indicating a device reset. According to their logs the next command being sent is WRITE FILEMARK, which results in writing an FM at the beginning of the tape, effectively discarding its contents. In fact, once the write fails with EIO, our software attempts to recover by rewinding and repositioning the tape, then resuming operation. If this fails, it attempts to rewind and reposition again, write a marker at the end of the tape, and then unmount. It does not under any circumstances write either data or filemarks without having successfully positioned the tape to a known point. What actually happens is that, since the last operation was a write, the kernel executes an implied MTWEOF operation (which translate to a Write Filemarks command) before the rewind that was actually requested. This seems not entirely unreasonable, provided the tape position is known. However, once this request fails (due to the unit attention condition), our next rewind attempt also triggers an implied MTWEOF, which does _not_ fail (the unit attention condition persists only until the initiator has been notified); this is the command that unexpectedly erases the tape. Our analysis is that the st driver is in fact completely ignoring the UNIT ATTENTION and associated reset notification from the device. This is not a condition that can be detected in the transport or mid-layer, as it occurs entirely within the target and is reported only via the UNIT ATTENTION sense key. The upper driver (i.e. st) needs to detect this indication and reset its internal model of the device to an unknown state. Most callers of scsi_rescan_device() have the scsi_device pointer readily available. Pass a struct scsi_device pointer to scsi_rescan_device() instead of a struct device pointer. This change prevents that a pointer to another struct device would be passed accidentally to scsi_rescan_device(). Use a dynamic calculation to determine the shift value for the internal timer cyclecounter that will lead to the highest precision frequency adjustments. Previously used a constant for the shift value assuming all devices supported by the driver had a nominal frequency of 1GHz. However, there are devices that operate at different frequencies. The previous shift value constant would break the PHC functionality for those devices. 2023-08-25Drivers: hv: vmbus: Bring the post_msg_page back for TDX VMs with the paravisorDexuan Cui
The post_msg_page was removed in commit 9a6b1a170ca8 ("Drivers: hv: vmbus: Remove the per-CPU post_msg_page") However, it turns out that we need to bring it back, but only for a TDX VM with the paravisor: in such a VM, the hyperv_pcpu_input_arg is not decrypted, but the HVCALL_POST_MESSAGE in such a VM needs a decrypted page as the hypercall input page: see the comments in hyperv_init() for a detailed explanation. Except for HVCALL_POST_MESSAGE and HVCALL_SIGNAL_EVENT, the other hypercalls in a TDX VM with the paravisor still use hv_hypercall_pg and must use the hyperv_pcpu_input_arg (which is encrypted in such a VM), when a hypercall input page is used. 2023-08-25x86/hyperv: Introduce a global variable hyperv_paravisor_presentDexuan Cui
The new variable hyperv_paravisor_present is set only when the VM is a SNP/TDX VM with the paravisor running: see ms_hyperv_init_platform(). We introduce hyperv_paravisor_present because we can not use ms_hyperv.paravisor_present in arch/x86/include/asm/mshyperv.h: struct ms_hyperv_info is defined in include/asm-generic/mshyperv.h, which is included at the end of arch/x86/include/asm/mshyperv.h, but at the beginning of arch/x86/include/asm/mshyperv.h, we would already need to use struct ms_hyperv_info in hv_do_hypercall(). We use hyperv_paravisor_present only in include/asm-generic/mshyperv.h, and use ms_hyperv.paravisor_present elsewhere. In the future, we'll introduce a hypercall function structure for different VM types, and at boot time, the right function pointers would be written into the structure so that runtime testing of TDX vs. SNP vs. normal will be avoided and hyperv_paravisor_present will no longer be needed. Call hv_vtom_init() when it's a VBS VM or when ms_hyperv.paravisor_present is true, i.e. the VM is a SNP VM or TDX VM with the paravisor. Enhance hv_vtom_init() for a TDX VM with the paravisor. In hv_common_cpu_init(), don't decrypt the hyperv_pcpu_input_arg for a TDX VM with the paravisor, just like we don't decrypt the page for a SNP VM with the paravisor. Don't set *this_cpu_ptr(hyperv_pcpu_input_arg) before the function set_memory_decrypted() returns, otherwise we run into this ticky issue: For a fully enlightened TDX/SNP VM, in hv_common_cpu_init(), *this_cpu_ptr(hyperv_pcpu_input_arg) is an encrypted page before the set_memory_decrypted() returns. When such a VM has more than 64 VPs, if the hyperv_pcpu_input_arg is not NULL, hv_common_cpu_init() -> set_memory_decrypted() -> ... -> cpa_flush() -> on_each_cpu() -> ... -> hv_send_ipi_mask() -> ... -> __send_ipi_mask_ex() tries to call hv_do_rep_hypercall() with the hyperv_pcpu_input_arg as the hypercall input page, which must be a decrypted page in such a VM, but the page is still encrypted at this point, and a fatal fault is triggered. Fix the issue by setting *this_cpu_ptr(hyperv_pcpu_input_arg) after set_memory_decrypted(): if the hyperv_pcpu_input_arg is NULL, __send_ipi_mask_ex() returns HV_STATUS_INVALID_PARAMETER immediately, and hv_send_ipi_mask() falls back to orig_apic.send_IPI_mask(), which can use x2apic_send_IPI_all(), which may be slightly slower than the hypercall but still works correctly in such a VM. Add Hyper-V specific code so that a fully enlightened TDX guest (i.e. without the paravisor) can run on Hyper-V: Don't use hv_vp_assist_page. Use GHCI instead. Don't try to use the unsupported HV_REGISTER_CRASH_CTL. Don't trust (use) Hyper-V's TLB-flushing hypercalls. Don't use lazy EOI. Share the SynIC Event/Message pages with the hypervisor. Don't use the Hyper-V TSC page for now, because non-trivial work is required to share the page with the hypervisor. These attributes directly facilitate the udev rule for managing userspace re-loading of the crash kernel upon hot un/plug changes. For memory, expose the crash_hotplug attribute to the /sys/devices/system/memory directory. 2023-08-24minmax: add in_range() macroMatthew Wilcox (Oracle)
Patch series "New page table range API", v6. This patchset changes the API used by the MM to set up page table entries. The four APIs are: set_ptes(mm, addr, ptep, pte, nr) update_mmu_cache_range(vma, addr, ptep, nr) flush_dcache_folio(folio) flush_icache_pages(vma, page, nr) flush_dcache_folio() isn't technically new, but no architecture implemented it, so I've done that for them. The old APIs remain around but are mostly implemented by calling the new interfaces. The new APIs are based around setting up N page table entries at once. The N entries belong to the same PMD, the same folio and the same VMA, so ptep++ is a legitimate operation, and locking is taken care of for you. Some architectures can do a better job of it than just a loop, but I have hesitated to make too deep a change to architectures I don't understand well. One thing I have changed in every architecture is that PG_arch_1 is now a per-folio bit instead of a per-page bit when used for dcache clean/dirty tracking. This was something that would have to happen eventually, and it makes sense to do it now rather than iterate over every page involved in a cache flush and figure out if it needs to happen. The point of all this is better performance, and Fengwei Yin has measured improvement on x86. I suspect you'll see improvement on your architecture too. This patchset is the basis for much of the anonymous large folio work being done by Ryan, so it's received quite a lot of testing over the last few months. This patch (of 38): Determine if a value lies within a range more efficiently (subtraction + comparison vs two comparisons and an AND). It also has useful (under some circumstances) behaviour if the range exceeds the maximum value of the type. Convert all the conflicting definitions of in_range() within the kernel; some can use the generic definition while others need their own definition. In some workloads, where multiple applications request hardware transmission timestamps, it was possible that some of those requests were denied because the only in use register was already occupied. This improves the inband IR command handling for NXP BT chipsets. When the IR vendor command is received, the driver injects a HW error event, which causes a reset sequence in hci_error_reset(). The vendor IR command is sent to the controller while hci dev is been closed, and FW is re-downloaded when nxp_setup() is called during hci_dev_do_open(). The HCI_SETUP flag is set in nxp_hw_err() to make sure that nxp_setup() is been called during hci_dev_do_open(). This also makes the nxp_setup() and power save functions more generic. This removes the unnecessary check for CTS low after FW download. After FW download is complete, the CTS line is already seen low. It becomes high after 2 msec, and low again after FW initialization is complete. This makes the current check for CTS low redundant. This removes the wait for CTS low section and increase delay to 1200msec instead, which is sufficiant for all NXP chipsets to initialize FW.
