2012-01-03net/davinci: do not use all descriptors for tx packetsSascha Hauer
The driver uses a shared pool for both rx and tx descriptors. During open it queues fixed number of 128 descriptors for receive packets. For each received packet it tries to queue another descriptor. If this fails the descriptor is lost for rx. The driver has no limitation on tx descriptors to use, so it can happen during a nmap / ping -f attack that the driver allocates all descriptors for tx and looses all rx descriptors. The driver stops working then. To fix this limit the number of tx descriptors used to half of the descriptors available, the rx path uses the other half. Tested on a custom board using nmap / ping -f to the board from two different hosts. Signed-off-by: Sascha Hauer <s.hauer@pengutronix.de> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
2012-01-03net: fsl: fec: fix build for mx23-only kernelWolfram Sang
If one only selects mx23-based boards, compile fails: drivers/net/ethernet/freescale/fec.c:410:2: error: 'FEC_HASH_TABLE_HIGH' undeclared (first use in this function) drivers/net/ethernet/freescale/fec.c:411:2: error: 'FEC_HASH_TABLE_LOW' undeclared (first use in this function) This is because fec.h uses CONFIG_SOC_IMX28 to determine the register layout of the core which makes sense since the MX23 does not have a fec. However, Kconfig uses the broader ARCH_MXS symbol and this way even makes the fec-driver default for MX23. Adapt Kconfig to use the more precise SOC_IMX28 as well. 2012-01-03bonding: fix error handling if slave is busy (v2)stephen hemminger
If slave device already has a receive handler registered, then the error unwind of bonding device enslave function is broken. The following will leave a pointer to freed memory in the slave device list, causing a later kernel panic. # modprobe dummy # ip li add dummy0-1 link dummy0 type macvlan # modprobe bonding # echo +dummy0 >/sys/class/net/bond0/bonding/slaves The fix is to detach the slave (which removes it from the list) in the unwind path. 2012-01-03offb: Fix setting of the pseudo-palette for >8bppBenjamin Herrenschmidt
When using a >8bpp framebuffer, offb advertises truecolor, not directcolor, and doesn't touch the color map even if it has a corresponding access method for the real hardware. Thus it needs to set the pseudo-palette with all 3 components of the color, like other truecolor framebuffers, not with copies of the color index like a directcolor framebuffer would do. This went unnoticed for a long time because it's pretty hard to get offb to kick in with anything but 8bpp (old BootX under MacOS will do that and qemu does it). 2012-01-03offb: Add palette hack for qemu "standard vga" framebufferBenjamin Herrenschmidt
We rename the mach64 hack to "simple" since that's also applicable to anything using VGA-style DAC IO ports (set to 8-bit DAC) and we use it for qemu vga. Note that this is keyed on a device-tree "compatible" property that is currently only set by an upcoming version of SLOF when using the qemu "pseries" platform. This is on purpose as other qemu ppc platforms using OpenBIOS aren't properly setting the DAC to 8-bit at the time of the writing of this patch. We can fix OpenBIOS later to do that and add the required property, in which case it will be matched by this change. Signed-off-by: Benjamin Herrenschmidt <benh@kernel.crashing.org>

2011-12-29random: Use arch_get_random_int instead of cycle counter if availLinus Torvalds
We still don't use rdrand in /dev/random, which just seems stupid. We accept the *cycle*counter* as a random input, but we don't accept rdrand? That's just broken. Sure, people can do things in user space (write to /dev/random, use rdrand in addition to /dev/random themselves etc etc), but that *still* seems to be a particularly stupid reason for saying "we shouldn't bother to try to do better in /dev/random". And even if somebody really doesn't trust rdrand as a source of random bytes, it seems singularly stupid to trust the cycle counter *more*. So I'd suggest the attached patch. I'm not going to even bother arguing that we should add more bits to the entropy estimate, because that's not the point - I don't care if /dev/random fills up slowly or not, I think it's just stupid to not use the bits we can get from rdrand and mix them into the strong randomness pool. 2011-12-29virtio_net: use non-reentrant workqueue.Rusty Russell
Michael S. Tsirkin also noticed that we could run the refill work multiple CPUs: if we kick off a refill on one CPU and then on another, they would both manipulate the queue at the same time (they use napi_disable to avoid racing against the receive handler itself). Tejun points out that this is what the WQ_NON_REENTRANT flag is for, and that there is a convenient system kthread we can use. 2011-12-29virtio_net: set/cancel work on ndo_open/ndo_stopRusty Russell
Michael S. Tsirkin noticed that we could run the refill work after ndo_close, which can re-enable napi - we don't disable it until virtnet_remove. This is clearly wrong, so move the workqueue control to ndo_open and ndo_stop (aka. virtnet_open and virtnet_close). One subtle point: virtnet_probe() could simply fail if it couldn't allocate a receive buffer, but that's less polite in virtnet_open() so we schedule a refill as we do in the normal receive path if we run out of memory. On extensive NFS boots on a mx6qsabrelite board it was noted that "FEC: MDIO read timeout" were occuring, which caused failure on loading the FEC driver. The original FEC_MII_TIMEOUT was set to 1 ms, which is too low when passed to the usecs_to_jiffies macro. On ARM one jiffy is 10ms, so use a timeout of 30ms, which corresponds to 3 jiffies. 2011-12-27watchdog: iTCO_wdt.c - problems with newer hardware due to SMI clearing (part 2)Wim Van Sebroeck
Redhat Bugzilla: Bug 727875 - TCO_EN bit is disabled by TCO driver The previous patch breaks reset watchdog behaviour on the older hardware. It is therefor better to make sure that the behaviour for older hardware (<=ICH5 or 6300ESB) is preserved and that the behaviour for newer hardware is changed. We therefor use the iTCO_version to see if we need the clearing of the SMI_TCO_EN bit in the SMI_EN register. So the new behaviour becomes: turn_SMI_watchdog_clear_off=0 -> Do not turn off SMI clearing watchdog. turn_SMI_watchdog_clear_off=1 -> Turn off SMI clearing watchdog when iTCO_version=1 (ICHO till ICH5 + 6300ESB only) turn_SMI_watchdog_clear_off=2 -> Turn off SMI clearing watchdog. 2011-12-27net: meth: Add set_rx_mode hook to fix ICMPv6 neighbor discoveryJoshua Kinard
SGI IP32 (O2)'s ethernet driver (meth) lacks a set_rx_mode function, which prevents IPv6 from working completely because any ICMPv6 neighbor solicitation requests aren't picked up by the driver. So the machine can ping out and connect to other systems, but other systems will have a very hard time connecting to the O2. Signed-off-by: Joshua Kinard <kumba@gentoo.org> Signed-off-by: David S.
