2025-03-13f2fs: add carve_out sysfs nodeDaeho Jeong
For several zoned storage devices, vendors will provide extra space which was used for device level GC than specs and F2FS can use this space for filesystem level GC. To do that, we can reserve the space using reserved_blocks. However, it is not enough, since this extra space should not be shown to users. So, with this new sysfs node, we can hide the space by substracting reserved_blocks from total bytes. Now, if dmesg is cleared, we have no way of knowing if the file system has been shutdown. Moreover, ext4 allows directory reads even after the file system has been shutdown, so when reading a file returns -EIO, we cannot determine whether this is a hardware issue or if the file system has been shutdown. Therefore, when ext4 file system is shutdown, we're adding a 'shutdown' hint to commands like mount so users can easily check the file system's status. After commit d3476f3dad4a ("ext4: don't set SB_RDONLY after filesystem errors") in v6.12-rc1, the 'errors=remount-ro' mode no longer sets SB_RDONLY on errors, which results in us seeing the filesystem is still in rw state after errors. Therefore, after setting EXT4_FLAGS_EMERGENCY_RO, display the emergency_ro option so that users can query whether the current file system has become emergency read-only due to errors through commands such as 'mount' or 'cat /proc/fs/ext4/sdx/options'. 2025-03-13ext4: correct behavior under errors=remount-ro modeBaokun Li
And after commit 95257987a638 ("ext4: drop EXT4_MF_FS_ABORTED flag") in v6.6-rc1, the EXT4_FLAGS_SHUTDOWN bit is set in ext4_handle_error() under errors=remount-ro mode. This causes the read to fail even when the error is triggered in errors=remount-ro mode. To correct the behavior under errors=remount-ro, EXT4_FLAGS_SHUTDOWN is replaced by the newly introduced EXT4_FLAGS_EMERGENCY_RO. This new flag only prevents writes, matching the previous behavior with SB_RDONLY. 2025-03-13ext4: abort journal on data writeback failure if in data_err=abort modeBaokun Li
The data_err=abort was initially introduced to address users' worries about data corruption spreading unnoticed. With direct writes, we can rely on return values to confirm successful writes to disk. But with buffered writes, a successful return only means the data has been written to memory. Users have no way of knowing if the data has actually written it to disk unless they use fsync (which impacts performance and can sometimes miss errors). The current data_err=abort implementation relies on the ordered data list, but past changes have inadvertently altered its behavior. For example, if an extent is unwritten, we do not add the inode to the ordered data list. Therefore, jbd2 will not wait for the data write-back of that inode to complete and check for errors in the inode mapping. Moreover, the checks performed by jbd2 can also miss errors. Now, all buffered writes eventually call ext4_end_bio(), where I/O errors are checked. Therefore, we can check for the data_err=abort mode at this point and abort the journal in a kworker (due to the interrupt context). Therefore, when data_err=abort is enabled, the journal is aborted in ext4_end_io_end() when an I/O error is detected in ext4_end_bio() to make users who are concerned about the contents of the file happy. 2025-03-13ext4: do not convert the unwritten extents if data writeback failsBaokun Li
When dioread_nolock is turned on (the default), it will convert unwritten extents to written at ext4_end_io_end(), even if the data writeback fails. It leads to the possibility that stale data may be exposed when the physical block corresponding to the file data is read-only (i.e., writes return -EIO, but reads are normal). Therefore a new ext4_io_end->flags EXT4_IO_END_FAILED is added, which indicates that some bio write-back failed in the current ext4_io_end. When this flag is set, the unwritten to written conversion is no longer performed. Users can read the data normally until the caches are dropped, after that, the failed extents can only be read to all 0. The readout of /proc/$PID/timers holds sighand::siglock with interrupts disabled. That is required to protect against concurrent modifications of the task::signal::posix_timers list because the list is not RCU safe. With the conversion of the timer storage to a RCU protected hlist, this is not longer required. The only requirement is to protect the returned entry against a concurrent free, which is trivial as the timers are RCU protected. Removing the trylock of sighand::siglock is benign because the life time of task_struct::signal is bound to the life time of the task_struct itself. There are two scenarios where this matters: 1) The process is life and not about to be checkpointed 2) The process is stopped via ptrace for checkpointing #1 is a racy snapshot of the armed timers and nothing can rely on it. It's not more than debug information and it has been that way before because sighand lock is dropped when the buffer is full and the restart of the iteration might find a completely different set of timers. The task and therefore task::signal cannot be freed as timers_start() acquired a reference count via get_pid_task(). #2 the process is stopped for checkpointing so nothing can delete or create timers at this point. Neither can the process exit during the traversal. If CRIU fails to observe an exit in progress prior to the dissimination of the timers, then there are more severe problems to solve in the CRIU mechanics as they can't rely on posix timers being enabled in the first place. Therefore replace the lock acquisition with rcu_read_lock() and switch the timer storage traversal over to seq_hlist_*_rcu(). 2025-03-12fs: dodge an atomic in putname if ref == 1Mateusz Guzik
While the structure is refcounted, the only consumer incrementing it is audit and even then the atomic operation is only needed when it interacts with io_uring. If putname spots a count of 1, there is no legitimate way for anyone to bump it. If audit is disabled, the count is guaranteed to be 1, which consistently elides the atomic for all path lookups. If audit is enabled, it still manages to elide the last decrement. Note the patch does not do anything to prevent audit from suffering atomics. See [1] and [2] for a different approach.
