2025-07-13mm/hugetlb: remove prepare_hugepage_range()Peter Xu
Only mips and loongarch implemented this API, however what it does was checking against stack overflow for either len or addr. That's already done in arch's arch_get_unmapped_area*() functions, even though it may not be 100% identical checks. For example, for both of the architectures, there will be a trivial difference on how stack top was defined. The old code uses STACK_TOP which may be slightly smaller than TASK_SIZE on either of them, but the hope is that shouldn't be a problem. It means the whole API is pretty much obsolete at least now, remove it completely. 2025-07-13smb: invalidate and close cached directory when creating child entriesBharath SM
When a parent lease key is passed to the server during a create operation while holding a directory lease, the server may not send a lease break to the client. In such cases, it becomes the client’s responsibility to ensure cache consistency. This led to a problem where directory listings (e.g., `ls` or `readdir`) could return stale results after a new file is created. eg: ls /mnt/share/ touch /mnt/share/file1 ls /mnt/share/ In this scenario, the final `ls` may not show `file1` due to the stale directory cache. For now, fix this by marking the cached directory as invalid if using the parent lease key during create, and explicitly closing the cached directory after successful file creation. 2025-07-13smb: client: fix use-after-free in crypt_message when using async cryptoWang Zhaolong
The CVE-2024-50047 fix removed asynchronous crypto handling from crypt_message(), assuming all crypto operations are synchronous. However, when hardware crypto accelerators are used, this can cause use-after-free crashes: crypt_message() // Allocate the creq buffer containing the req creq = smb2_get_aead_req(..., &req); // Async encryption returns -EINPROGRESS immediately rc = enc ? crypto_aead_encrypt(req) : crypto_aead_decrypt(req); // Free creq while async operation is still in progress kvfree_sensitive(creq, ...); Hardware crypto modules often implement async AEAD operations for performance. When crypto_aead_encrypt/decrypt() returns -EINPROGRESS, the operation completes asynchronously. Without crypto_wait_req(), the function immediately frees the request buffer, leading to crashes when the driver later accesses the freed memory. This results in a use-after-free condition when the hardware crypto driver later accesses the freed request structure, leading to kernel crashes with NULL pointer dereferences. The issue occurs because crypto_alloc_aead() with mask=0 doesn't guarantee synchronous operation. Even without CRYPTO_ALG_ASYNC in the mask, async implementations can be selected. Fix by restoring the async crypto handling: - DECLARE_CRYPTO_WAIT(wait) for completion tracking - aead_request_set_callback() for async completion notification - crypto_wait_req() to wait for operation completion This ensures the request buffer isn't freed until the crypto operation completes, whether synchronous or asynchronous, while preserving the CVE-2024-50047 fix. When _cifsFileInfo_put() calls cifs_sb_deactive(), this releases the last reference, triggering the immediate cleanup of all inodes under RCU. However, cifs_oplock_break() continues to access the cinode after this point, resulting in use-after-free. Fix this by holding an extra reference to the superblock during the entire oplock break operation. This ensures that the superblock and its inodes remain valid until the oplock break completes. This reverts commit 8c44dac8add7503c345c0f6c7962e4863b88ba42. I haven't figured out what the actual bug in this commit is, but I did spend a lot of time chasing it down and eventually succeeded in bisecting it down to this. For some reason, this eventpoll commit ends up causing delays and stuck user space processes, but it only happens on one of my machines, and only during early boot or during the flurry of initial activity when logging in. I must be triggering some very subtle timing issue, but once I figured out the behavior pattern that made it reasonably reliable to trigger, it did bisect right to this, and reverting the commit fixes the problem. Of course, that was only after I had failed at bisecting it several times, and had flailed around blaming both the drm people and the netlink people for the odd problems. The most obvious of which happened at the time of the first graphical login (the most common symptom being that some gnome app aborted due to a 30s timeout, often leading to the whole session then failing if it was some critical component like gnome-shell or similar). 2025-07-12erofs: fix large fragment handlingGao Xiang
Fragments aren't limited by Z_EROFS_PCLUSTER_MAX_DSIZE. However, if a fragment's logical length is larger than Z_EROFS_PCLUSTER_MAX_DSIZE but the fragment is not the whole inode, it currently returns -EOPNOTSUPP because m_flags has the wrong EROFS_MAP_ENCODED flag set. It is not intended by design but should be rare, as it can only be reproduced by mkfs with `-Eall-fragments` in a specific case. Let's normalize fragment m_flags using the new EROFS_MAP_FRAGMENT. 2025-07-11iomap: avoid unnecessary ifs_set_range_uptodate() with locksJinliang Zheng
In the buffer write path, iomap_set_range_uptodate() is called every time iomap_end_write() is called. But if folio_test_uptodate() holds, we know that all blocks in this folio are already in the uptodate state, so there is no need to go deep into the critical section of state_lock to execute bitmap_set(). This is because the folios always creep towards ifs_is_fully_uptodate() state and once they've gotten there folio_mark_uptodate() is called, which means the folio is uptodate. Then once a folio is uptodate, there is no route back to !uptodate without going through the removal of the folio from the page cache. Therefore, it's fine to use folio_test_uptodate() to short-circuit unnecessary code paths. Although state_lock may not have significant lock contention due to folio lock, this patch at least reduces the number of instructions, especially the expensive lock-prefixed instructions. 2025-07-10fscrypt: Don't use asynchronous CryptoAPI algorithmsEric Biggers
Now that fscrypt's incomplete support for non-inline crypto engines has been removed, and none of the CPU-based algorithms have the CRYPTO_ALG_ASYNC flag set anymore, there is no need to accommodate asynchronous algorithms. Therefore, explicitly allocate only synchronous algorithms. Then, remove the code that handled waiting for asynchronous en/decryption operations to complete. This commit should *not* be backported to kernels that lack commit 0ba6ec5b2972 ("crypto: x86/aes - stop using the SIMD helper"), as then it would disable the use of the optimized AES code on x86. 2025-07-10erofs: address D-cache aliasingGao Xiang
Flush the D-cache before unlocking folios for compressed inodes, as they are dirtied during decompression. Avoid calling flush_dcache_folio() on every CPU write, since it's more like playing whack-a-mole without real benefit. It has no impact on x86 and arm64/risc-v: on x86, flush_dcache_folio() is a no-op, and on arm64/risc-v, PG_dcache_clean (PG_arch_1) is clear for new page cache folios. However, certain ARM boards are affected, as reported. 2025-07-10cachefiles: Fix the incorrect return value in __cachefiles_write()Zizhi Wo
In __cachefiles_write(), if the return value of the write operation > 0, it is set to 0. This makes it impossible to distinguish scenarios where a partial write has occurred, and will affect the outer calling functions: 1) cachefiles_write_complete() will call "term_func" such as netfs_write_subrequest_terminated(). When "ret" in __cachefiles_write() is used as the "transferred_or_error" of this function, it can not distinguish the amount of data written, makes the WARN meaningless. 2) cachefiles_ondemand_fd_write_iter() can only assume all writes were successful by default when "ret" is 0, and unconditionally return the full length specified by user space. Fix it by modifying "ret" to reflect the actual number of bytes written. Furthermore, returning a value greater than 0 from __cachefiles_write() does not affect other call paths, such as cachefiles_issue_write() and fscache_write(). The root inode of /proc having a fixed inode number has been part of the core kernel ABI since its inception, and recently some userspace programs (mainly container runtimes) have started to explicitly depend on this behaviour. The main reason this is useful to userspace is that by checking that a suspect /proc handle has fstype PROC_SUPER_MAGIC and is PROCFS_ROOT_INO, they can then use openat2(RESOLVE_{NO_{XDEV,MAGICLINK},BENEATH}) to ensure that there isn't a bind-mount that replaces some procfs file with a different one. This kind of attack has lead to security issues in container runtimes in the past (such as CVE-2019-19921) and libraries like libpathrs[1] use this feature of procfs to provide safe procfs handling functions. There was also some trailing whitespace in the "struct proc_dir_entry" initialiser, so fix that up as well. evict_inodes() uses list_for_each_entry_safe() to iterate sb->s_inodes list. However, since we use i_lru list entry for our local temporary list of inodes to destroy, the inode is guaranteed to stay in sb->s_inodes list while we hold sb->s_inode_list_lock. So there is no real need for safe iteration variant and we can use list_for_each_entry() just fine. 2025-07-09ocfs2: update d_splice_alias() return code checkingTetsuo Handa
When commit d3556babd7fa ("ocfs2: fix d_splice_alias() return code checking") was merged into v3.18-rc3, d_splice_alias() was returning one of a valid dentry, NULL or an ERR_PTR. When commit b5ae6b15bd73 ("merge d_materialise_unique() into d_splice_alias()") was merged into v3.19-rc1, d_splice_alias() started returning -ELOOP as one of ERR_PTR values. Now, when syzkaller mounts a crafted ocfs2 filesystem image that hits d_splice_alias() == -ELOOP case from ocfs2_lookup(), ocfs2_lookup() fails to handle -ELOOP case and generic_shutdown_super() hits "VFS: Busy inodes after unmount" message. Instead of calling ocfs2_dentry_attach_lock() or ocfs2_dentry_attach_gen() when d_splice_alias() returned an ERR_PTR value, change ocfs2_lookup() to bail out immediately. Also, ocfs2_lookup() needs to call dupt() when ocfs2_dentry_attach_lock() returned an ERR_PTR value. 2025-07-09ocfs2: remove redundant NULL check in rename pathLong Li
The code checks newfe_bh for NULL after it has already been dereferenced to access b_data. This NULL check is unnecessary for two reasons: 1. If ocfs2_inode_lock() succeeds (returns >= 0), newfe_bh is guaranteed to be valid. 2. We've already dereferenced newfe_bh to access b_data, so it must be non-NULL at this point. 2025-07-09mm: convert pXd_devmap checks to vma_is_daxAlistair Popple
Patch series "mm: Remove pXX_devmap page table bit and pfn_t type", v3. All users of dax now require a ZONE_DEVICE page which is properly refcounted. This means there is no longer any need for the PFN_DEV, PFN_MAP and PFN_SPECIAL flags. Furthermore the PFN_SG_CHAIN and PFN_SG_LAST flags never appear to have been used. It is therefore possible to remove the pfn_t type and replace any usage with raw pfns. The remaining users of PFN_DEV have simply passed this to vmf_insert_mixed() to create pte_devmap() mappings. It is unclear why this was the case but presumably to ensure vm_normal_page() does not return these pages. These users can be trivially converted to raw pfns and creating a pXX_special() mapping to ensure vm_normal_page() still doesn't return these pages. Now that there are no users of PFN_DEV we can remove the devmap page table bit and all associated functions and macros, freeing up a software page table bit. This patch (of 14): Currently dax is the only user of pmd and pud mapped ZONE_DEVICE pages. Therefore page walkers that want to exclude DAX pages can check pmd_devmap or pud_devmap. However soon dax will no longer set PFN_DEV, meaning dax pages are mapped as normal pages. Ensure page walkers that currently use pXd_devmap to skip DAX pages continue to do so by adding explicit checks of the VMA instead. Remove vma_is_dax() check from mm/userfaultfd.c as validate_move_areas() will already skip DAX VMA's on account of them not being anonymous. The check in userfaultfd_must_wait() is also redundant as vma_can_userfault() should have already filtered out dax vma's. For HMM the pud_devmap check seems unnecessary as there is no reason we shouldn't be able to handle any leaf PUD here so remove it also. 2025-07-09mm/hugetlb: make hugetlb_reserve_pages() return nr of entries updatedVivek Kasireddy
Patch series "mm/memfd: Reserve hugetlb folios before allocation", v4. There are cases when we try to pin a folio but discover that it has not been faulted-in. So, we try to allocate it in memfd_alloc_folio() but the allocation request may not succeed if there are no active reservations in the system at that instant. Therefore, making a reservation (by calling hugetlb_reserve_pages()) associated with the allocation will ensure that our request would not fail due to lack of reservations. This will also ensure that proper region/subpool accounting is done with our allocation. This patch (of 3): Currently, hugetlb_reserve_pages() returns a bool to indicate whether the reservation map update for the range [from, to] was successful or not. This is not sufficient for the case where the caller needs to determine how many entries were updated for the range. Therefore, have hugetlb_reserve_pages() return the number of entries updated in the reservation map associated with the range [from, to]. Also, update the callers of hugetlb_reserve_pages() to handle the new return value.
