2013-06-29locks: convert fl_link to a hlist_nodeJeff Layton
Testing has shown that iterating over the blocked_list for deadlock detection turns out to be a bottleneck. In order to alleviate that, begin the process of turning it into a hashtable. We start by turning the fl_link into a hlist_node and the global lists into hlists. A later patch will do the conversion of the blocked_list to a hashtable. 2013-06-29locks: protect most of the file_lock handling with i_lockJeff Layton
Having a global lock that protects all of this code is a clear scalability problem. Instead of doing that, move most of the code to be protected by the i_lock instead. The exceptions are the global lists that the ->fl_link sits on, and the ->fl_block list. ->fl_link is what connects these structures to the global lists, so we must ensure that we hold those locks when iterating over or updating these lists. Furthermore, sound deadlock detection requires that we hold the blocked_list state steady while checking for loops. We also must ensure that the search and update to the list are atomic. For the checking and insertion side of the blocked_list, push the acquisition of the global lock into __posix_lock_file and ensure that checking and update of the blocked_list is done without dropping the lock in between. On the removal side, when waking up blocked lock waiters, take the global lock before walking the blocked list and dequeue the waiters from the global list prior to removal from the fl_block list. With this, deadlock detection should be race free while we minimize excessive file_lock_lock thrashing. Finally, in order to avoid a lock inversion problem when handling /proc/locks output we must ensure that manipulations of the fl_block list are also protected by the file_lock_lock. 2013-06-29cifs: use posix_unblock_lock instead of locks_delete_blockJeff Layton
commit 66189be74 (CIFS: Fix VFS lock usage for oplocked files) exported the locks_delete_block symbol. There's already an exported helper function that provides this capability however, so make cifs use that instead and turn locks_delete_block back into a static function. Note that if fl->fl_next == NULL then this lock has already been through locks_delete_block(), so we should be OK to ignore an ENOENT error here and simply not retry the lock. Instances either don't look at it at all (the majority of cases) or only want it to find the superblock (which can be had as dentry->d_sb). A few cases that want more are actually safe with dentry->d_inode - the only precaution needed is the check that it hadn't been replaced with NULL by rmdir() or by overwriting rename(), which case should be simply treated as cache miss. That's the replacement for ->readdir(); it takes callback from ctx->actor, uses ctx->pos instead of file->f_pos and calls dir_emit(ctx, ...) instead of filldir(data, ...). It does *not* update file->f_pos (or look at it, for that matter); iterate_dir() does the update. 2013-06-28ipv4: use next hop exceptions also for input routesTimo Teräs
Commit d2d68ba9 (ipv4: Cache input routes in fib_info nexthops) assmued that "locally destined, and routed packets, never trigger PMTU events or redirects that will be processed by us". However, it seems that tunnel devices do trigger PMTU events in certain cases. At least ip_gre, ip6_gre, sit, and ipip do use the inner flow's skb_dst(skb)->ops->update_pmtu to propage mtu information from the outer flows. These can cause the inner flow mtu to be decreased. If next hop exceptions are not consulted for pmtu, IP fragmentation will not be done properly for these routes. It also seems that we really need to have the PMTU information always for netfilter TCPMSS clamp-to-pmtu feature to work properly. So for the time being, cache separate copies of input routes for each next hop exception. To reduce the number of unnecessary router solicitations, MLDv2 and IGMPv3 messages we need to track the number of valid (as in non-optimistic, no-dad-failed and non-tentative) link-local addresses. Therefore, this patch implements a valid_ll_addr_cnt in struct inet6_dev. We now only emit router solicitations if the first link-local address finishes duplicate address detection. The changes for MLDv2 and IGMPv3 are in a follow-up patch. If the clock was set (stepped), set the action parameter to functions in the pvclock gtod notifier chain to non-zero. This allows the callee to only do work if the clock was stepped. This will be used on Xen as the synchronization of the Xen wallclock to the control domain's (dom0) system time will be done with this notifier and updating on every timer tick is unnecessary and too expensive. This reverts commit 160954b7bca43da7cd3cfbce310e6df919a8216e. This was rearming the workqueue with a 0 timeout, causing a WARN_ON, and possible loop. Daniel writes: "I've looked a bit into this and I think we need to have a separate work struct for recovering these lost hotplug events since the continuous self-rearming case is a real risk (e.g. if a connector flip-flops all the time). At least I don't see a sane way to block out re-arming with the current code in a simple way. So reverting the offender seems like the right thing and I'll go back to the drawing board for 3.12." into fbdev/for-next OMAP display subsystem changes for 3.11 (part 2/2) This is the second part of OMAP DSS changes for 3.11. This part contains the new DSS device model support. The current OMAP panel drivers use a custom DSS bus, and there's a hard limit of one external display block per video pipeline. In the new DSS device model the devices/drivers are made according to the control bus of the display block, usually platform, i2c or spi. The display blocks can also be chained so that we can have separate drivers for setups with both external encoder and panel. To allow the current board files, which use the old style panels, to function, the old display drivers are left in their current state, and new ones are added to drivers/video/omap2/displays-new/. When the board files have been converted to use the new style panels, we can remove the old code. This is planned to happen in v3.12. Having to support two very different DSS device models makes the driver somewhat confusing in some parts, and prevents us from properly cleaning up some other parts. These cleanups will be done when the old code is removed. The new device model is designed with CDF (Common Display Framework) in mind. While CDF is still under work, the new DSS device model should be much more similar to CDF's model than the old device model, which should make the eventual conversion to CDF much easier.

This part contains fixes, cleanups and reorganizations that are not directly related to the new DSS device model that is added in part 2, although many of the reorganizations are made to make the part 2 possible. There should not be any functional changes visible to the user except the few bug fixes. The main new internal features: - Display (dis)connect support, which allows us to explicitly (dis)connect a whole display pipeline - Panel list, which allows us to operate without the specific DSS bus - Combine omap_dss_output to omap_dss_device, so that we have one generic "entity" for display pipeline blocks
