2019-02-08lib: objagg: implement optimization hints assembly and use hints for object ↵Jiri Pirko
creation Implement simple greedy algo to find more optimized root-delta tree for a given objagg instance. This "hints" can be used by a driver to: 1) check if the hints are better (driver's choice) than the original objagg tree. Driver does comparison of objagg stats and hints stats. 2) use the hints to create a new objagg instance which will construct the root-delta tree according to the passed hints. Currently, only a simple greedy algorithm is implemented. Basically it finds the roots according to the maximal possible user count including deltas. 2019-02-08devlink: publish params only after driver init is doneJiri Pirko
Currently, user can do dump or get of param values right after the devlink params are registered. However the driver may not be initialized which is an issue. The same problem happens during notification upon param registration. Allow driver to publish devlink params whenever it is ready to handle get() ops. Note that this cannot be resolved by init reordering, as the "driverinit" params have to be available before the driver is initialized (it needs the param values there). My research into how GCC and Clang are handling this at a low level didn't prove fruitful. However, looking at the rest of the kernel tree, all ioctls use an 'unsigned int' for the cmd parameter, which will fit all of the _IOC values in the scsi/ata subsystems. Make that change because none of the ioctls expect a negative value for any command, it brings the ioctls inline with the reset of the kernel, and it removes ambiguity, which is never good when dealing with compilers. 2019-02-08ASoC: core: don't increase component module refcount unconditionallyPierre-Louis Bossart
The ASoC core has for the longest time increased the module reference counts, even before the transition to the component model. This is probably fine on most platforms, but it introduces a deadlock case on Intel devices with the Skylake and SOF drivers which cannot be removed due to their reference counts being modified by the core. In these 2 cases, the PCI or ACPI driver .probe creates a platform device to let the machine driver .probe register the audio card. Conversely the PCI or ACPI driver .remove will unregister the platform device which results in the card being removed by the machine driver .remove. This can be shown, e.g. with the following error: root@plb-XPS-13-9350:~# lsmod | grep snd_soc_skl snd_soc_skl 110592 1 root@plb-XPS-13-9350:~# rmmod snd_soc_skl rmmod: ERROR: Module snd_soc_skl is in use Increasing the reference count during the component probe is not useful. If the PCI/ACPI module is removed, the card will be removed anyway. To avoid breaking existing platforms and allowing Intel platforms to safely deal with module load/unload cases, this patch introduces a flag which needs to be set during the component initialization. This is a strictly opt-in capability that should only be used when the handling of the component module does not require a reference count increase to prevent removal during use. Note that this solution is not directly applicable to the legacy Atom/SST driver, which uses a different device hierarchy. There are however additional refcount issues which prevent the ACPI driver from being removed. This is a different issue which would need a different patch. While typing these I think doing an s/component_master/aggregate/ would be useful: - it's shorter :-) - I think component/aggregate is much more meaningful naming than component/puppetmaster or something like that. At least to my English ear "aggregate" emphasizes much more the "assemble a pile of things into something bigger" aspect, and there's not really much of a control hierarchy between aggregate and constituing components. But that's way more than a quick doc typing exercise ... In some cases, the system bus can be configured for 16-bit mode, in this case using read/write functions for 32-bit values results in two cycles of 16 bits each, which is wrong. Rather than always iterating elements from frames with pure u8 pointers, add a type "struct element" that encapsulates the id/datalen/data format of them. Then, add the element iteration macros * for_each_element * for_each_element_id * for_each_element_extid which take, as their first 'argument', such a structure and iterate through a given u8 array interpreting it as elements. While at it and since we'll need it, also add * for_each_subelement * for_each_subelement_id * for_each_subelement_extid which instead of taking data/length just take an outer element and use its data/datalen. Also add for_each_element_completed() to determine if any of the loops above completed, i.e. it was able to parse all of the elements successfully and no data remained. 2019-02-08mmc: block: handle complete_work on separate workqueueZachary Hays
The kblockd workqueue is created with the WQ_MEM_RECLAIM flag set. This generates a rescuer thread for that queue that will trigger when the CPU is under heavy load and collect the uncompleted work. In the case of mmc, this creates the possibility of a deadlock when there are multiple partitions on the device as other blk-mq work is also run on the same queue. For example: - worker 0 claims the mmc host to work on partition 1 - worker 1 attempts to claim the host for partition 2 but has to wait for worker 0 to finish - worker 0 schedules complete_work to release the host - rescuer thread is triggered after time-out and collects the dangling work - rescuer thread attempts to complete the work in order starting with claim host - the task to release host is now blocked by a task to claim it and will never be called The above results in multiple hung tasks that lead to failures to mount partitions. Handling complete_work on a separate workqueue avoids this by keeping the work completion tasks separate from the other blk-mq work. This allows the host to be released without getting blocked by other tasks attempting to claim the host. Let genphy_c45_read_link manage the devices to check, this removes overhead from callers. Add C22EXT to the list of excluded devices because it doesn't implement the status register. According to the 802.3 clause 45 spec registers 29.0 - 29.4 are reserved. At the moment we have very few clause 45 PHY drivers, so we are lacking experience whether other drivers will have to exclude further devices, or may need to check PHY XS. 2019-02-07ACPI / APEI: Don't update struct ghes' flags in read/clear estatusJames Morse
ghes_read_estatus() sets a flag in struct ghes if the buffer of CPER records needs to be cleared once the records have been processed. This flag value is a problem if a struct ghes can be processed concurrently, as happens at probe time if an NMI arrives for the same error source. The NMI clears the flag, meaning the interrupted handler may never do the ghes_estatus_clear() work. The GHES_TO_CLEAR flags is only set at the same time as buffer_paddr, which is now owned by the caller and passed to ghes_clear_estatus(). Use this value as the flag. A non-zero buf_paddr returned by ghes_read_estatus() means ghes_clear_estatus() should clear this address. ghes_read_estatus() already checks for a read of error_status_address being zero, so CPER records cannot be written here. When CPER records are found the address of the records is stashed in the struct ghes. Once the records have been processed, this address is overwritten with zero so that it won't be processed again without being re-populated by firmware. This goes wrong if a struct ghes can be processed concurrently, as can happen at probe time when an NMI occurs. If the NMI arrives on another CPU, the probing CPU may call ghes_clear_estatus() on the records before the handler had finished with them. Even on the same CPU, once the interrupted handler is resumed, it will call ghes_clear_estatus() on the NMIs records, this memory may have already been re-used by firmware. Avoid this stashing by letting the caller hold the address. A later patch will do away with the use of ghes->flags in the read/clear code too. ghes.c has a memory pool it uses for the estatus cache and the estatus queue. The cache is initialised when registering the platform driver. For the queue, an NMI-like notification has to grow/shrink the pool as it is registered and unregistered. This is all pretty noisy when adding new NMI-like notifications, it would be better to replace this with a static pool size based on the number of users. As a precursor, move the call that creates the pool from ghes_init(), into hest.c. Later this will take the number of ghes entries and consolidate the queue allocations. Remove ghes_estatus_pool_exit() as hest.c doesn't have anywhere to put this. The pool is now initialised as part of ACPI's subsys_initcall(): (acpi_init(), acpi_scan_init(), acpi_pci_root_init(), acpi_hest_init()) Before this patch it happened later as a GHES specific device_initcall(). With the removal of drmP.h from drm_modeset_helper.h the drmP.h are no longer included by any include files in include/drm. The drmP.h file is thus only included explicit either in .c files or in local .h files. This makes the process of deleting the drmP.h includes easier as we have a more local dependency chain. v2: - moved updates of .c files in drm/ to a dedicated patch. This allows the updates to the *.c files to be committed without the removal part. Furthermore, changing the kernel driver ucontext allocation code to initialize the abi structure with appropriate values. As suggested by community, appended the new fields at the bottom of the ABI structure and retaining to older fields as those were in the older versions. Keeping the ABI version at 1 and adding a new field in the ucontext response structure to hold the component mask. The user space library should check pre-defined flags to figure out if a certain feature is supported on not. Currently, blktrace will not show requests that don't have any data as rq->__sector is initialized to -1 which is out of device range and thus discarded by act_log_check(). Taking a sleeping lock to _only_ increment a variable is quite the overkill, and pretty much all users do this. Furthermore, some drivers (ie: infiniband and scif) that need pinned semantics can go to quite some trouble to actually delay via workqueue (un)accounting for pinned pages when not possible to acquire it. By making the counter atomic we no longer need to hold the mmap_sem and can simply some code around it for pinned_vm users. The counter is 64-bit such that we need not worry about overflows such as rdma user input controlled from userspace.
