2023-03-14pm-graph: sleepgraph: Avoid crashing on binary data in device namesTodd Brandt
A regression has occurred in the hid-sensor code where a device name string has not been initialized to 0, and ends up without a NULL char and is printed with %s. This includes random binary data in the device name, which makes its way into the ftrace output and ends up crashing sleepgraph because it expects the ftrace output to be ASCII only. For example: "HID-SENSOR-INT-020b?.39.auto" ends up in ftrace instead of "HID-SENSOR-INT-020b.39.auto". It causes this crash in sleepgraph: File "/usr/bin/sleepgraph", line 5579, in executeSuspend for line in fp: File "/usr/lib/python3.10/codecs.py", line 322, in decode (result, consumed) = self._buffer_decode(data, self.errors, final) UnicodeDecodeError: 'utf-8' codec can't decode byte 0xff in position 1568: invalid start byte The issue is present in 6.3-rc1 and is described in full here: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=217169 A separate fix has been submitted to have this issue repaired, but it has also exposed a larger bug in sleepgraph, since nothing should make sleepgraph crash. Sleepgraph needs to be able to handle binary data showing up in ftrace gracefully. Modify the ftrace processing code to treat it as potentially binary and to filter out binary data and leave just the ASCII. When kvm_xen_evtchn_send() takes the slow path because the shinfo GPC needs to be revalidated, it used to violate the SRCU vs. kvm->lock locking rules and potentially cause a deadlock. 2023-03-14KVM: selftests: Use enum for test numbers in xen_shinfo_testDavid Woodhouse
The xen_shinfo_test started off with very few iterations, and the numbers we used in GUEST_SYNC() were precisely mapped to the RUNSTATE_xxx values anyway to start with. It has since grown quite a few more tests, and it's kind of awful to be handling them all as bare numbers. Especially when I want to add a new test in the middle. Define an enum for the test stages, and use it both in the guest code and the host switch statement. No functional change, if I can count to 24. 2023-03-14selftests: KVM: skip hugetlb tests if huge pages are not availablePaolo Bonzini
Right now, if KVM memory stress tests are run with hugetlb sources but hugetlb is not available (either in the kernel or because /proc/sys/vm/nr_hugepages is 0) the test will fail with a memory allocation error. This makes it impossible to add tests that default to hugetlb-backed memory, because on a machine with a default configuration they will fail. Therefore, check HugePages_Total as well and, if zero, direct the user to enable hugepages in procfs. Furthermore, return KSFT_SKIP whenever hugetlb is not available. mmcra_thresh_marked_sample_test The testcase verifies the setting of different fields in Monitor Mode Control Register A (MMCRA). In the current code, EV_CODE_EXTRACT macro is used to extract the "sample" field, which then needs to be further processed to fetch rand_samp_elig and rand_samp_mode bits. But the current code is not passing valid sample field to EV_CODE_EXTRACT macro. Patch addresses this by fixing the input for EV_CODE_EXTRACT. 2023-03-15selftests/powerpc: Increase timeout for vsx_signal testMichael Neuling
On the max config P10 machine (1920 threads and 64TB) this test fails with a timeout: Sending signals to all threads 10 times...!! killing vmx_signal !! child died by signal 15 failure: vmx_signal The default timeout is 120sec so increase this 3x to 360sec. With this change the test passes on these large machines. Sometimes there are severe contentions on the mmap_lock and we want see it in the -l/--lock-addr output. However it cannot symbolize the mmap_lock because it's allocated dynamically without symbols. Stephane and Hao gave me an idea separately to display mmap_lock by following the current->mm pointer. I added a flag to mark mmap_lock after comparing the lock address so that it can show them differently. 2023-03-14perf build: Error if no libelf and NO_LIBELF isn't setIan Rogers
Building without libelf support is going disable a lot of functionality. Require that the NO_LIBELF=1 build option is passed if this is intentional. Committer notes: Add NO_LIBELF=1 to the 'make_static' target in tools/perf/tests/make so that 'make -C tools/perf build-test' works. If libtraceevent isn't present, the build will warn and continue. This disables a number of features and so isn't desirable. This change makes the build error for this case. 2023-03-14perf symbol: Add abi::__cxa_demangle C++ demangling supportIan Rogers
Refactor C++ demangling out of symbol-elf into its own files similar to other languages. Add abi::__cxa_demangle support. As the other demanglers are not shippable with distributions, this brings back C++ demangling in a common case. binutils is GPLv3 so distributions cannot ship perf linked against libbfd and libiberty as the licenses are incompatible. Rather than defaulting the build to opting in to libbfd and libiberty support and opting out via NO_LIBBFD=1 and NO_DEMANGLE=1, make building against the libraries optional and enabled with BUILD_NONDISTRO=1. BPF skeleton support is now key to a number of perf features. Rather than making it so that BPF support must be enabled for the build, make this the default and error if the build lacks a clang and libbpf that are sufficient. To avoid the error and build without BPF skeletons the NO_BPF_SKEL=1 flag can be used. Add a build-options flag to 'perf version' to enable detection of the BPF skeleton support and use this in the offcpu shell test. 2023-03-13perf evlist: Remove nr_groupsIan Rogers
Maintaining the number of groups during event parsing is problematic and since changing to sort/regroup events can only be computed by a linear pass over the evlist. As the value is generally only used in tests, rather than hold it in a variable compute it by passing over the evlist when necessary. This change highlights that libpfm's counting of groups with a single entry disagreed with regular event parsing. The libpfm tests are updated accordingly.
