2017-01-11firmware: revamp firmware documentationLuis R. Rodriguez
Understanding this code is getting out of control without any notes. Give the firmware_class driver a much needed documentation love, and while at it convert it to the new sphinx documentation format. v2: typos and small fixes Signed-off-by: Luis R. 2012-11-14firmware loader: document firmware cache mechanismMing Lei
This patch documents the firmware cache mechanism so that users of request_firmware() know that it can be called safely inside device's suspend and resume callback, and the device's firmware needn't be cached any more by individual driver itself to deal with firmware loss during system resume. 2012-11-14firmware loader: introduce module parameter to customize(v4) fw search pathMing Lei
This patch introduces one module parameter of 'path' in firmware_class to support customizing firmware image search path, so that people can use its own firmware path if the default built-in paths can't meet their demand[1], and the typical usage is passing the below from kernel command parameter when 'firmware_class' is built in kernel: firmware_class.path=$CUSTOMIZED_PATH [1], https://lkml.org/lkml/2012/10/11/337 Cc: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org> Signed-off-by: Ming Lei <ming.lei@canonical.com> Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@linuxfoundation.org>
2012-10-25firmware loader: document kernel direct loadingMing Lei

2010-08-05firmware: Update hotplug scriptMagnus Damm
Update the in-kernel hotplug example script to work properly with recent kernels. Without this fix the script may load the firmware twice - both at "add" and "remove" time. The second load only triggers in the case when multiple firmware images are used. A good example is the b43 driver which does not work properly without this fix. 2009-06-15driver core: fix documentation of request_firmware_nowaitMing Lei
request_firmware_nowait declares it can be called in non-sleep contexts, but kthead_run called by request_firmware_nowait may sleep. So fix its documentation and comment to make callers clear about it. Signed-off-by: Ming Lei <tom.leiming@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@suse.de>

2007-07-11sysfs: add parameter "struct bin_attribute *" in .read/.write methods for ↵Zhang Rui
sysfs binary attributes Well, first of all, I don't want to change so many files either. What I do: Adding a new parameter "struct bin_attribute *" in the .read/.write methods for the sysfs binary attributes. In fact, only the four lines change in fs/sysfs/bin.c and include/linux/sysfs.h do the real work. But I have to update all the files that use binary attributes to make them compatible with the new .read and .write methods. I'm not sure if I missed any. :( Why I do this: For a sysfs attribute, we can get a pointer pointing to the struct attribute in the .show/.store method, while we can't do this for the binary attributes. I don't know why this is different, but this does make it not so handy to use the binary attributes as the regular ones. So I think this patch is reasonable. :) Who benefits from it: The patch that exposes ACPI tables in sysfs requires such an improvement. All the table binary attributes share the same .read method. Parameter "struct bin_attribute *" is used to get the table signature and instance number which are used to distinguish different ACPI table binary attributes. Without this parameter, we need to offer different .read methods for different ACPI table binary attributes. This is impossible as there are various ACPI tables on different platforms, and we don't know what they are until they are loaded. 2005-10-30[PATCH] fix missing includesTim Schmielau
I recently picked up my older work to remove unnecessary #includes of sched.h, starting from a patch by Dave Jones to not include sched.h from module.h. This reduces the number of indirect includes of sched.h by ~300. Another ~400 pointless direct includes can be removed after this disentangling (patch to follow later). However, quite a few indirect includes need to be fixed up for this. In order to feed the patches through -mm with as little disturbance as possible, I've split out the fixes I accumulated up to now (complete for i386 and x86_64, more archs to follow later) and post them before the real patch. This way this large part of the patch is kept simple with only adding #includes, and all hunks are independent of each other. So if any hunk rejects or gets in the way of other patches, just drop it. My scripts will pick it up again in the next round. Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
