Pull Documentation updates from Jonathan Corbet: "Here are the main documentation changes for 5.5: - Various kerneldoc script enhancements. - More RST conversions; those are slowing down as we run out of things to convert, but we're a ways from done still. - Dan's "maintainer profile entry" work landed at last. Now we just need to get maintainers to fill in the profiles... - A reworking of the parallel build setup to work better with a variety of systems (and to not take over huge systems entirely in particular). - The MAINTAINERS file is now converted to RST during the build. Hopefully nobody ever tries to print this thing, or they will need to load a lot of paper. - A script and documentation making it easy for maintainers to add Link: tags at commit time. 2019-10-18linkage: Introduce new macros for assembler symbolsJiri Slaby
Introduce new C macros for annotations of functions and data in assembly. There is a long-standing mess in macros like ENTRY, END, ENDPROC and similar. They are used in different manners and sometimes incorrectly. So introduce macros with clear use to annotate assembly as follows: a) Support macros for the ones below SYM_T_FUNC -- type used by assembler to mark functions SYM_T_OBJECT -- type used by assembler to mark data SYM_T_NONE -- type used by assembler to mark entries of unknown type They are defined as STT_FUNC, STT_OBJECT, and STT_NOTYPE respectively. According to the gas manual, this is the most portable way. I am not sure about other assemblers, so this can be switched back to %function and %object if this turns into a problem. Architectures can also override them by something like ", @function" if they need. SYM_A_ALIGN, SYM_A_NONE -- align the symbol? SYM_L_GLOBAL, SYM_L_WEAK, SYM_L_LOCAL -- linkage of symbols b) Mostly internal annotations, used by the ones below SYM_ENTRY -- use only if you have to (for non-paired symbols) SYM_START -- use only if you have to (for paired symbols) SYM_END -- use only if you have to (for paired symbols) c) Annotations for code SYM_INNER_LABEL_ALIGN -- only for labels in the middle of code SYM_INNER_LABEL -- only for labels in the middle of code SYM_FUNC_START_LOCAL_ALIAS -- use where there are two local names for one function SYM_FUNC_START_ALIAS -- use where there are two global names for one function SYM_FUNC_END_ALIAS -- the end of LOCAL_ALIASed or ALIASed function SYM_FUNC_START -- use for global functions SYM_FUNC_START_NOALIGN -- use for global functions, w/o alignment SYM_FUNC_START_LOCAL -- use for local functions SYM_FUNC_START_LOCAL_NOALIGN -- use for local functions, w/o alignment SYM_FUNC_START_WEAK -- use for weak functions SYM_FUNC_START_WEAK_NOALIGN -- use for weak functions, w/o alignment SYM_FUNC_END -- the end of SYM_FUNC_START_LOCAL, SYM_FUNC_START, SYM_FUNC_START_WEAK, ... For functions with special (non-C) calling conventions: SYM_CODE_START -- use for non-C (special) functions SYM_CODE_START_NOALIGN -- use for non-C (special) functions, w/o alignment SYM_CODE_START_LOCAL -- use for local non-C (special) functions SYM_CODE_START_LOCAL_NOALIGN -- use for local non-C (special) functions, w/o alignment SYM_CODE_END -- the end of SYM_CODE_START_LOCAL or SYM_CODE_START d) For data SYM_DATA_START -- global data symbol SYM_DATA_START_LOCAL -- local data symbol SYM_DATA_END -- the end of the SYM_DATA_START symbol SYM_DATA_END_LABEL -- the labeled end of SYM_DATA_START symbol SYM_DATA -- start+end wrapper around simple global data SYM_DATA_LOCAL -- start+end wrapper around simple local data ========== The macros allow to pair starts and ends of functions and mark functions correctly in the output ELF objects. All users of the old macros in x86 are converted to use these in further patches. Signed-off-by: Jiri Slaby <jslaby@suse.cz> Signed-off-by: Borislav Petkov <bp@suse.de> Acked-by: Rafael J. 2019-08-08doc: Add doc for the Ingenic TCU hardwarePaul Cercueil
Add documentation about the Timer/Counter Unit (TCU) present in the Ingenic JZ47xx SoCs. The Timer/Counter Unit (TCU) in Ingenic JZ47xx SoCs is a multi-function hardware block. It features up to to eight channels, that can be used as counters, timers, or PWM. - JZ4725B, JZ4750, JZ4755 only have six TCU channels. The other SoCs all have eight channels. - JZ4725B introduced a separate channel, called Operating System Timer (OST). It is a 32-bit programmable timer. On JZ4770 and above, it is 64-bit. - Each one of the TCU channels has its own clock, which can be reparented to three different clocks (pclk, ext, rtc), gated, and reclocked, through their TCSR register. * The watchdog and OST hardware blocks also feature a TCSR register with the same format in their register space. * The TCU registers used to gate/ungate can also gate/ungate the watchdog and OST clocks. - Each TCU channel works in one of two modes: * mode TCU1: channels cannot work in sleep mode, but are easier to operate. * mode TCU2: channels can work in sleep mode, but the operation is a bit more complicated than with TCU1 channels. - The mode of each TCU channel depends on the SoC used: * On the oldest SoCs (up to JZ4740), all of the eight channels operate in TCU1 mode. * On JZ4725B, channel 5 operates as TCU2, the others operate as TCU1. * On newest SoCs (JZ4750 and above), channels 1-2 operate as TCU2, the others operate as TCU1. - Each channel can generate an interrupt. Some channels share an interrupt line, some don't, and this changes between SoC versions: * on older SoCs (JZ4740 and below), channel 0 and channel 1 have their own interrupt line; channels 2-7 share the last interrupt line. * On JZ4725B, channel 0 has its own interrupt; channels 1-5 share one interrupt line; the OST uses the last interrupt line. * on newer SoCs (JZ4750 and above), channel 5 has its own interrupt; channels 0-4 and (if eight channels) 6-7 all share one interrupt line; the OST uses the last interrupt line. 2019-07-31docs: isdn: convert to ReST and add to kAPI booksetMauro Carvalho Chehab
The ISDN documentation is a mix of admin guide, uAPI and kAPI. Ideally, it should be split. Yet, not sure if it would worth the troble. Anyway, we have the same kind of mix on several drivers specific documentation. So, just like the others, keep the directory at the root Documentation/ tree, just adding a pointer to it at the kAPI section, as the documentation was written with the Kernel developers in mind. 2019-07-17docs: power: add it to to the main documentation indexMauro Carvalho Chehab
The power docs are orphaned at the documentation body. While it could likely be moved to be inside some guide, I'm opting to just adding it to the main index.rst, removing the :orphan: and adding the SPDX header. The reason is similar to what it was done for other driver-specific subsystems: the docs there contain a mix of Kernelspace, uAPI and admin-guide. So, better to keep them on its own directory, while the docs there are not properly classified. Signed-off-by: Mauro Carvalho Chehab <mchehab+samsung@kernel.org>
2019-07-17docs: powerpc: convert docs to ReST and rename to *.rstMauro Carvalho Chehab
Convert docs to ReST and add them to the arch-specific book. The conversion here was trivial, as almost every file there was already using an elegant format close to ReST standard. The changes were mostly to mark literal blocks and add a few missing section title identifiers. One note with regards to "--": on Sphinx, this can't be used to identify a list, as it will format it badly. This can be used, however, to identify a long hyphen - and "---" is an even longer one. At its new index.rst, let's add a :orphan: while this is not linked to the main index.rst file, in order to avoid build warnings. git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip Pull x86 MDS mitigations from Thomas Gleixner: "Microarchitectural Data Sampling (MDS) is a hardware vulnerability which allows unprivileged speculative access to data which is available in various CPU internal buffers. This new set of misfeatures has the following CVEs assigned: CVE-2018-12126 MSBDS Microarchitectural Store Buffer Data Sampling CVE-2018-12130 MFBDS Microarchitectural Fill Buffer Data Sampling CVE-2018-12127 MLPDS Microarchitectural Load Port Data Sampling CVE-2019-11091 MDSUM Microarchitectural Data Sampling Uncacheable Memory MDS attacks target microarchitectural buffers which speculatively forward data under certain conditions. Disclosure gadgets can expose this data via cache side channels. Contrary to other speculation based vulnerabilities the MDS vulnerability does not allow the attacker to control the memory target address. As a consequence the attacks are purely sampling based, but as demonstrated with the TLBleed attack samples can be postprocessed successfully. The mitigation is to flush the microarchitectural buffers on return to user space and before entering a VM. It's bolted on the VERW instruction and requires a microcode update. As some of the attacks exploit data structures shared between hyperthreads, full protection requires to disable hyperthreading. The kernel does not do that by default to avoid breaking unattended updates. The mitigation set comes with documentation for administrators and a deeper technical view" * 'x86-mds-for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip: (23 commits) x86/speculation/mds: Fix documentation typo Documentation: Correct the possible MDS sysfs values x86/mds: Add MDSUM variant to the MDS documentation x86/speculation/mds: Add 'mitigations=' support for MDS x86/speculation/mds: Print SMT vulnerable on MSBDS with mitigations off x86/speculation/mds: Fix comment x86/speculation/mds: Add SMT warning message x86/speculation: Move arch_smt_update() call to after mitigation decisions x86/speculation/mds: Add mds=full,nosmt cmdline option Documentation: Add MDS vulnerability documentation Documentation: Move L1TF to separate directory x86/speculation/mds: Add mitigation mode VMWERV x86/speculation/mds: Add sysfs reporting for MDS x86/speculation/mds: Add mitigation control for MDS x86/speculation/mds: Conditionally clear CPU buffers on idle entry x86/kvm/vmx: Add MDS protection when L1D Flush is not active x86/speculation/mds: Clear CPU buffers on exit to user x86/speculation/mds: Add mds_clear_cpu_buffers() x86/kvm: Expose X86_FEATURE_MD_CLEAR to guests x86/speculation/mds: Add BUG_MSBDS_ONLY ...

2019-03-06x86/speculation/mds: Add mds_clear_cpu_buffers()Thomas Gleixner
The Microarchitectural Data Sampling (MDS) vulernabilities are mitigated by clearing the affected CPU buffers. The mechanism for clearing the buffers uses the unused and obsolete VERW instruction in combination with a microcode update which triggers a CPU buffer clear when VERW is executed. Provide a inline function with the assembly magic. The argument of the VERW instruction must be a memory operand as documented: "MD_CLEAR enumerates that the memory-operand variant of VERW (for example, VERW m16) has been extended to also overwrite buffers affected by MDS. This buffer overwriting functionality is not guaranteed for the register operand variant of VERW." Documentation also recommends to use a writable data segment selector: "The buffer overwriting occurs regardless of the result of the VERW permission check, as well as when the selector is null or causes a descriptor load segment violation. However, for lowest latency we recommend using a selector that indicates a valid writable data segment." Add x86 specific documentation about MDS and the internal workings of the mitigation. 2018-08-31docs: tidy up TOCs and refs to license-rules.rstMarkus Heiser
The documentation and TOCs are organized in a manner of a tree. Adding a TOC to the root, which refers to a file which is located in a subfolder forms a grid. Documentation/process/license-rules.rst: \ WARNING: document isn't included in any toctree To fix it, the *root-license-TOC* is replaced by a reference and the 'license-roles.txt' is added to the Documentation/process/index.rst TOC.
