2016-11-15tracing: Add new trace_marker_rawSteven Rostedt
A new file is created: /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/trace_marker_raw This allows for appications to create data structures and write the binary data directly into it, and then read the trace data out from trace_pipe_raw into the same type of data structure. This saves on converting numbers into ASCII that would be required by trace_marker. Suggested-by: Olof Johansson <olof@lixom.net> Signed-off-by: Steven Rostedt <rostedt@goodmis.org>
2016-11-14ftrace: Support full glob matchingMasami Hiramatsu
Use glob_match() to support flexible glob wildcards (*,?) and character classes ([) for ftrace. Since the full glob matching is slower than the current partial matching routines(*pat, pat*, *pat*), this leaves those routines and just add MATCH_GLOB for complex glob expression. e.g. ---- [root@localhost tracing]# echo 'sched*group' > set_ftrace_filter [root@localhost tracing]# cat set_ftrace_filter sched_free_group sched_change_group sched_create_group sched_online_group sched_destroy_group sched_offline_group [root@localhost tracing]# echo '[Ss]y[Ss]_*' > set_ftrace_filter [root@localhost tracing]# head set_ftrace_filter sys_arch_prctl sys_rt_sigreturn sys_ioperm SyS_iopl sys_modify_ldt SyS_mmap SyS_set_thread_area SyS_get_thread_area SyS_set_tid_address sys_fork ---- Link: http://lkml.kernel.org/r/147566869501.29136.6462645009894738056.stgit@devbox Acked-by: Namhyung Kim <namhyung@kernel.org> Signed-off-by: Masami Hiramatsu <mhiramat@kernel.org> Signed-off-by: Steven Rostedt <rostedt@goodmis.org>

Includes the thread stack caching performance optimization. (Andy Lutomirski) - switch_to() cleanups and all around enhancements. (Brian Gerst) - A large number of dumpstack infrastructure enhancements and an unwinder abstraction. The secret long term plan is safe(r) live patching plus maybe another attempt at debuginfo based unwinding - but all these current bits are standalone enhancements in a frame pointer based debug environment as well. 2016-09-02tracing: Have hwlat trace migrate across tracing_cpumask CPUsSteven Rostedt (Red Hat)
Instead of having the hwlat detector thread stay on one CPU, have it migrate across all the CPUs specified by tracing_cpumask. 2016-09-01ftrace: Access ret_stack->subtime only in the function profilerNamhyung Kim
The subtime is used only for function profiler with function graph tracer enabled. Move the definition of subtime under CONFIG_FUNCTION_PROFILER to reduce the memory usage. 2016-08-24ftrace: Add return address pointer to ftrace_ret_stackJosh Poimboeuf
Storing this value will help prevent unwinders from getting out of sync with the function graph tracer ret_stack. Now instead of needing a stateful iterator, they can compare the return address pointer to find the right ret_stack entry. Note that an array of 50 ftrace_ret_stack structs is allocated for every task. So when an arch implements this, it will add either 200 or 400 bytes of memory usage per task (depending on whether it's a 32-bit or 64-bit platform). 2016-06-20tracing: expose current->comm to [ku]probe eventsOmar Sandoval
ftrace is very quick to give up on saving the task command line (see `trace_save_cmdline()`). The workaround for events which really care about the command line is to explicitly assign it as part of the entry. However, this doesn't work for kprobe events, as there's no straightforward way to get access to current->comm. Add a kprobe/uprobe event variable $comm which provides exactly that. 2016-04-23sched/fair: Gather CPU load functions under a more conventional namespaceFrederic Weisbecker
The CPU load update related functions have a weak naming convention currently, starting with update_cpu_load_*() which isn't ideal as "update" is a very generic concept. 2016-04-19tracing: Add support for named hist triggersTom Zanussi
Allow users to define 'named' hist triggers. All triggers created with the same 'name=xxx' option will update the same shared histogram data. This expands the hist trigger syntax from this: # echo hist:keys=xxx ... [ if filter] > event/trigger to this: # echo hist:name=xxx:keys=xxx ... [ if filter] > event/trigger Named histograms must use a 'compatible' set of keys and values, which means each event added to a set of named triggers must have the same names and types. Reading the 'hist' file of any of the participating events will produce the same output as any other participating event, which is to be expected since they share the same data. 2015-12-06x86, tracing, perf: Add trace point for MSR accessesAndi Kleen
For debugging low level code interacting with the CPU it is often useful to trace the MSR read/writes. This gives a concise summary of PMU and other operations. perf has an ad-hoc way to do this using trace_printk, but it's somewhat limited (and also now spews ugly boot messages when enabled) Instead define real trace points for all MSR accesses. This adds three new trace points: read_msr and write_msr and rdpmc. They also report if the access faulted (if *_safe is used) This allows filtering and triggering on specific MSR values, which allows various more advanced debugging techniques. All the values are well defined in the CPU documentation. The trace can be post processed with Documentation/trace/postprocess/decode_msr.py to add symbolic MSR names to the trace. I only added it to native MSR accesses in C, not paravirtualized or in entry*.S (which is not too interesting) Originally the patch kit moved the MSRs out of line. This uses an alternative approach recommended by Steven Rostedt of only moving the trace calls out of line, but open coding the access to the jump label. 2015-10-04intel_th: Add driver infrastructure for Intel(R) Trace Hub devicesAlexander Shishkin
Intel(R) Trace Hub (TH) is a set of hardware blocks (subdevices) that produce, switch and output trace data from multiple hardware and software sources over several types of trace output ports encoded in System Trace Protocol (MIPI STPv2) and is intended to perform full system debugging. For these subdevices, we create a bus, where they can be discovered and configured by userspace software. This patch creates this bus infrastructure, three types of devices (source, output, switch), resource allocation, some callback mechanisms to facilitate communication between the subdevices' drivers and some common sysfs attributes. 2015-10-04stm class: Introduce an abstraction for System Trace Module devicesAlexander Shishkin
A System Trace Module (STM) is a device exporting data in System Trace Protocol (STP) format as defined by MIPI STP standards. Examples of such devices are Intel(R) Trace Hub and Coresight STM. This abstraction provides a unified interface for software trace sources to send their data over an STM device to a debug host. In order to do that, such a trace source needs to be assigned a pair of master/channel identifiers that all the data from this source will be tagged with. The STP decoder on the debug host side will use these master/channel tags to distinguish different trace streams from one another inside one STP stream. This abstraction provides a configfs-based policy management mechanism for dynamic allocation of these master/channel pairs based on trace source-supplied string identifier. It has the flexibility of being defined at runtime and at the same time (provided that the policy definition is aligned with the decoding end) consistency. For userspace trace sources, this abstraction provides write()-based and mmap()-based (if the underlying stm device allows this) output mechanism. For kernel-side trace sources, we provide "stm_source" device class that can be connected to an stm device at run time. 2014-12-03tracing: Add additional marks to signal very large time deltasByungchul Park
Currently, function graph tracer prints "!" or "+" just before function execution time to signal a function overhead, depending on the time. And some tracers tracing latency also print "!" or "+" just after time to signal overhead, depending on the interval between events. Even it is usually enough to do that, we sometimes need to signal for bigger execution time than 100 micro seconds. For example, I used function graph tracer to detect if there is any case that exit_mm() takes too much time. I did following steps in /sys/kernel/debug/tracing. It was easier to detect very large excution time with patched kernel than with original kernel. $ echo exit_mm > set_graph_function $ echo function_graph > current_tracer $ echo > trace $ cat trace_pipe > $LOGFILE ... (do something and terminate logging) $ grep "\\$" $LOGFILE 3) $ 22082032 us | } /* kernel_map_pages */ 3) $ 22082040 us | } /* free_pages_prepare */ 3) $ 22082113 us | } /* free_hot_cold_page */ 3) $ 22083455 us | } /* free_hot_cold_page_list */ 3) $ 22083895 us | } /* release_pages */ 3) $ 22177873 us | } /* free_pages_and_swap_cache */ 3) $ 22178929 us | } /* unmap_single_vma */ 3) $ 22198885 us | } /* unmap_vmas */ 3) $ 22206949 us | } /* exit_mmap */ 3) $ 22207659 us | } /* mmput */ 3) $ 22207793 us | } /* exit_mm */ And then, it was easy to find out that a schedule-out occured by sub_preempt_count() within kernel_map_pages(). To detect very large function exection time caused by either problematic function implementation or scheduling issues, this patch can be useful. 2014-11-21ftrace, kprobes: Support IPMODIFY flag to find IP modify conflictMasami Hiramatsu
Introduce FTRACE_OPS_FL_IPMODIFY to avoid conflict among ftrace users who may modify regs->ip to change the execution path. If two or more users modify the regs->ip on the same function entry, one of them will be broken. So they must add IPMODIFY flag and make sure that ftrace_set_filter_ip() succeeds. Note that ftrace doesn't allow ftrace_ops which has IPMODIFY flag to have notrace hash, and the ftrace_ops must have a filter hash (so that the ftrace_ops can hook only specific entries), because it strongly depends on the address and must be allowed for only few selected functions. git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/rostedt/linux-trace Pull tracing updates from Steven Rostedt: "This pull request has a lot of work done. The main thing is the changes to the ftrace function callback infrastructure. It's introducing a way to allow different functions to call directly different trampolines instead of all calling the same "mcount" one. The only user of this for now is the function graph tracer, which always had a different trampoline, but the function tracer trampoline was called and did basically nothing, and then the function graph tracer trampoline was called. The difference now, is that the function graph tracer trampoline can be called directly if a function is only being traced by the function graph trampoline. If function tracing is also happening on the same function, the old way is still done. The accounting for this takes up more memory when function graph tracing is activated, as it needs to keep track of which functions it uses. I have a new way that wont take as much memory, but it's not ready yet for this merge window, and will have to wait for the next one. Another big change was the removal of the ftrace_start/stop() calls that were used by the suspend/resume code that stopped function tracing when entering into suspend and resume paths. The stop of ftrace was done because there was some function that would crash the system if one called smp_processor_id()! The stop/start was a big hammer to solve the issue at the time, which was when ftrace was first introduced into Linux. Now ftrace has better infrastructure to debug such issues, and I found the problem function and labeled it with "notrace" and function tracing can now safely be activated all the way down into the guts of suspend and resume Other changes include clean ups of uprobe code, clean up of the trace_seq() code, and other various small fixes and clean ups to ftrace and tracing" * tag 'trace-3.17' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/rostedt/linux-trace: (57 commits) ftrace: Add warning if tramp hash does not match nr_trampolines ftrace: Fix trampoline hash update check on rec->flags ring-buffer: Use rb_page_size() instead of open coded head_page size ftrace: Rename ftrace_ops field from trampolines to nr_trampolines tracing: Convert local function_graph functions to static ftrace: Do not copy old hash when resetting tracing: let user specify tracing_thresh after selecting function_graph ring-buffer: Always run per-cpu ring buffer resize with schedule_work_on() tracing: Remove function_trace_stop and HAVE_FUNCTION_TRACE_MCOUNT_TEST s390/ftrace: remove check of obsolete variable function_trace_stop arm64, ftrace: Remove check of obsolete variable function_trace_stop Blackfin: ftrace: Remove check of obsolete variable function_trace_stop metag: ftrace: Remove check of obsolete variable function_trace_stop microblaze: ftrace: Remove check of obsolete variable function_trace_stop MIPS: ftrace: Remove check of obsolete variable function_trace_stop parisc: ftrace: Remove check of obsolete variable function_trace_stop sh: ftrace: Remove check of obsolete variable function_trace_stop sparc64,ftrace: Remove check of obsolete variable function_trace_stop tile: ftrace: Remove check of obsolete variable function_trace_stop ftrace: x86: Remove check of obsolete variable function_trace_stop ...
