2017-03-03sched/headers: Move task->mm handling methods to <linux/sched/mm.h>Ingo Molnar
Move the following task->mm helper APIs into a new header file, <linux/sched/mm.h>, to further reduce the size and complexity of <linux/sched.h>. 2017-02-27mm: add new mmgrab() helperVegard Nossum
Apart from adding the helper function itself, the rest of the kernel is converted mechanically using: git grep -l 'atomic_inc.*mm_count' | xargs sed -i 's/atomic_inc(&\(.*\)->mm_count);/mmgrab\(\1\);/' git grep -l 'atomic_inc.*mm_count' | xargs sed -i 's/atomic_inc(&\(.*\)\.mm_count);/mmgrab\(\&\1\);/' This is needed for a later patch that hooks into the helper, but might be a worthwhile cleanup on its own. This completes the separation of exception table content from the module.h header file. This is achieved with the final commit that removes the one line back compatible change that sourced extable.h into the module.h file. The commits are unchanged since January, with the exception of a couple Acks that came in for the last two commits a bit later. The changes have been in linux-next for quite some time[1] and have got widespread arch coverage via toolchains I have and also from additional ones the kbuild bot has. Maintaners of the various arch were Cc'd during the postings to lkml[2] and informed that the intention was to take the remaining arch specific changes and lump them together with the final two non-arch specific changes and submit for this merge window. The ia64 diffstat stands out and probably warrants a mention. 2017-02-01sched/cputime: Convert task/group cputime to nsecsFrederic Weisbecker
Now that most cputime readers use the transition API which return the task cputime in old style cputime_t, we can safely store the cputime in nsecs. This will eventually make cputime statistics less opaque and more granular. Back and forth convertions between cputime_t and nsecs in order to deal with cputime_t random granularity won't be needed anymore. While technically it is a revert the comments it adds are important for people not getting confused in the future. Clearing up that confusion allows us to seriously work on unprivileged mounts of fuse in the next development cycle. The rest of the fixes in this set are in the intersection of user namespaces, ptrace, and exec. I started with the first fix which started a feedback cycle of finding additional issues during review and fixing them. Culiminating in a fix for a bug that has been present since at least Linux v1.0. Potentially these fixes were candidates for being merged during the rc cycle, and are certainly backport candidates but enough little things turned up during review and testing that I decided they should be handled as part of the normal development process just to be certain there were not any great surprises when it came time to backport some of these fixes" * 'for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/ebiederm/user-namespace: Revert "evm: Translate user/group ids relative to s_user_ns when computing HMAC" exec: Ensure mm->user_ns contains the execed files ptrace: Don't allow accessing an undumpable mm ptrace: Capture the ptracer's creds not PT_PTRACE_CAP mm: Add a user_ns owner to mm_struct and fix ptrace permission checks
2016-11-22ptrace: Don't allow accessing an undumpable mmEric W. Biederman
It is the reasonable expectation that if an executable file is not readable there will be no way for a user without special privileges to read the file. This is enforced in ptrace_attach but if ptrace is already attached before exec there is no enforcement for read-only executables. As the only way to read such an mm is through access_process_vm spin a variant called ptrace_access_vm that will fail if the target process is not being ptraced by the current process, or the current process did not have sufficient privileges when ptracing began to read the target processes mm. In the ptrace implementations replace access_process_vm by ptrace_access_vm. There remain several ptrace sites that still use access_process_vm as they are reading the target executables instructions (for kernel consumption) or register stacks. As such it does not appear necessary to add a permission check to those calls. This bug has always existed in Linux. 2016-11-16posix-timers: Make them configurableNicolas Pitre
Some embedded systems have no use for them. This removes about 25KB from the kernel binary size when configured out. Corresponding syscalls are routed to a stub logging the attempt to use those syscalls which should be enough of a clue if they were disabled without proper consideration. They are: timer_create, timer_gettime: timer_getoverrun, timer_settime, timer_delete, clock_adjtime, setitimer, getitimer, alarm. The clock_settime, clock_gettime, clock_getres and clock_nanosleep syscalls are replaced by simple wrappers compatible with CLOCK_REALTIME, CLOCK_MONOTONIC and CLOCK_BOOTTIME only which should cover the vast majority of use cases with very little code. 2016-10-19Merge branch 'gup_flag-cleanups'Linus Torvalds
Merge the gup_flags cleanups from Lorenzo Stoakes: "This patch series adjusts functions in the get_user_pages* family such that desired FOLL_* flags are passed as an argument rather than implied by flags. The purpose of this change is to make the use of FOLL_FORCE explicit so it is easier to grep for and clearer to callers that this flag is being used. The use of FOLL_FORCE is an issue as it overrides missing VM_READ/VM_WRITE flags for the VMA whose pages we are reading from/writing to, which can result in surprising behaviour. The patch series came out of the discussion around commit 38e088546522 ("mm: check VMA flags to avoid invalid PROT_NONE NUMA balancing"), which addressed a BUG_ON() being triggered when a page was faulted in with PROT_NONE set but having been overridden by FOLL_FORCE. do_numa_page() was run on the assumption the page _must_ be one marked for NUMA node migration as an actual PROT_NONE page would have been dealt with prior to this code path, however FOLL_FORCE introduced a situation where this assumption did not hold. See https://marc.info/?l=linux-mm&m=147585445805166 for the patch proposal" Additionally, there's a fix for an ancient bug related to FOLL_FORCE and FOLL_WRITE by me. 2016-10-19mm: replace access_process_vm() write parameter with gup_flagsLorenzo Stoakes
This removes the 'write' argument from access_process_vm() and replaces it with 'gup_flags' as use of this function previously silently implied FOLL_FORCE, whereas after this patch callers explicitly pass this flag. We make this explicit as use of FOLL_FORCE can result in surprising behaviour (and hence bugs) within the mm subsystem. 2016-10-07nmi_backtrace: generate one-line reports for idle cpusChris Metcalf
When doing an nmi backtrace of many cores, most of which are idle, the output is a little overwhelming and very uninformative. Suppress messages for cpus that are idling when they are interrupted and just emit one line, "NMI backtrace for N skipped: idling at pc 0xNNN". We do this by grouping all the cpuidle code together into a new .cpuidle.text section, and then checking the address of the interrupted PC to see if it lies within that section. This commit suitably tags x86 and tile idle routines, and only adds in the minimal framework for other architectures. 2016-08-04dma-mapping: use unsigned long for dma_attrsKrzysztof Kozlowski
The dma-mapping core and the implementations do not change the DMA attributes passed by pointer. Thus the pointer can point to const data. However the attributes do not have to be a bitfield. Instead unsigned long will do fine: 1. This is just simpler. Both in terms of reading the code and setting attributes. Instead of initializing local attributes on the stack and passing pointer to it to dma_set_attr(), just set the bits. 2. It brings safeness and checking for const correctness because the attributes are passed by value. Semantic patches for this change (at least most of them): virtual patch virtual context @r@ identifier f, attrs; @@ f(..., - struct dma_attrs *attrs + unsigned long attrs , ...) { ... } @@ identifier r.f; @@ f(..., - NULL + 0 ) and // Options: --all-includes virtual patch virtual context @r@ identifier f, attrs; type t; @@ t f(..., struct dma_attrs *attrs); @@ identifier r.f; @@ f(..., - NULL + 0 ) Link: http://lkml.kernel.org/r/1468399300-5399-2-git-send-email-k.kozlowski@samsung.com Signed-off-by: Krzysztof Kozlowski <k.kozlowski@samsung.com> Acked-by: Vineet Gupta <vgupta@synopsys.com> Acked-by: Robin Murphy <robin.murphy@arm.com> Acked-by: Hans-Christian Noren Egtvedt <egtvedt@samfundet.no> Acked-by: Mark Salter <msalter@redhat.com> [c6x] Acked-by: Jesper Nilsson <jesper.nilsson@axis.com> [cris] Acked-by: Daniel Vetter <daniel.vetter@ffwll.ch> [drm] Reviewed-by: Bart Van Assche <bart.vanassche@sandisk.com> Acked-by: Joerg Roedel <jroedel@suse.de> [iommu] Acked-by: Fabien Dessenne <fabien.dessenne@st.com> [bdisp] Reviewed-by: Marek Szyprowski <m.szyprowski@samsung.com> [vb2-core] Acked-by: David Vrabel <david.vrabel@citrix.com> [xen] Acked-by: Konrad Rzeszutek Wilk <konrad.wilk@oracle.com> [xen swiotlb] Acked-by: Joerg Roedel <jroedel@suse.de> [iommu] Acked-by: Richard Kuo <rkuo@codeaurora.org> [hexagon] Acked-by: Geert Uytterhoeven <geert@linux-m68k.org> [m68k] Acked-by: Gerald Schaefer <gerald.schaefer@de.ibm.com> [s390] Acked-by: Bjorn Andersson <bjorn.andersson@linaro.org> Acked-by: Hans-Christian Noren Egtvedt <egtvedt@samfundet.no> [avr32] Acked-by: Vineet Gupta <vgupta@synopsys.com> [arc] Acked-by: Robin Murphy <robin.murphy@arm.com> [arm64 and dma-iommu] Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@linux-foundation.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>

2016-06-04char/genrtc: remove alpha supportArnd Bergmann
The genrtc driver serves no purpose on Alpha because it drives the same hardware as the original rtc.c driver, and the newer rtc-generic.c or rtc-cmos.c drivers on architectures that use the asm-generic/rtc.h header. The defconfig uses CONFIG_RTC=y, so this driver is not used by default. At one point it was used to abstract a quirk for the "Marvel" platform, but it does not do this any more after the code was moved into yet another driver in arch/alpha/kernel/rtc.c. 2016-06-04rtc: cmos: move mc146818rtc code out of asm-generic/rtc.hArnd Bergmann
Drivers should not really include stuff from asm-generic directly, and the PC-style cmos rtc driver does this in order to reuse the mc146818 implementation of get_rtc_time/set_rtc_time rather than the architecture specific one for the architecture it gets built for. To make it more obvious what is going on, this moves and renames the two functions into include/linux/mc146818rtc.h, which holds the other mc146818 specific code. Ideally it would be in a .c file, but that would require extra infrastructure as the functions are called by multiple drivers with conflicting dependencies. With this change, the asm-generic/rtc.h header also becomes much more generic, so it can be reused more easily across any architecture that still relies on the genrtc driver. The only caller of the internal __get_rtc_time/__set_rtc_time functions is in arch/alpha/kernel/rtc.c, and we just change those over to the new naming. Revert dff22d2054b5 ("PCI: Call pci_read_bridge_bases() from core instead of arch code"). Reading PCI bridge windows is not arch-specific in itself, but there is PCI core code that doesn't work correctly if we read them too early. For example, Hannes found this case on an ARM Freescale i.mx6 board: pci_bus 0000:00: root bus resource [mem 0x01000000-0x01efffff] pci 0000:00:00.0: PCI bridge to [bus 01-ff] pci 0000:00:00.0: BAR 8: no space for [mem size 0x01000000] (mem window) pci 0000:01:00.0: BAR 2: failed to assign [mem size 0x00200000] pci 0000:01:00.0: BAR 1: failed to assign [mem size 0x00004000] pci 0000:01:00.0: BAR 0: failed to assign [mem size 0x00000100] The 00:00.0 mem window needs to be at least 3MB: the 01:00.0 device needs 0x204100 of space, and mem windows are megabyte-aligned. Bus sizing can increase a bridge window size, but never *decrease* it (see d65245c3297a ("PCI: don't shrink bridge resources")). Prior to dff22d2054b5, ARM didn't read bridge windows at all, so the "original size" was zero, and we assigned a 3MB window. After dff22d2054b5, we read the bridge windows before sizing the bus. The firmware programmed a 16MB window (size 0x01000000) in 00:00.0, and since we never decrease the size, we kept 16MB even though we only needed 3MB. But 16MB doesn't fit in the host bridge aperture, so we failed to assign space for the window and the downstream devices. I think this is a defect in the PCI core: we shouldn't rely on the firmware to assign sensible windows. Ray reported a similar problem, also on ARM, with Broadcom iProc. Issues like this are too hard to fix right now, so revert dff22d2054b5. 2015-09-10dma-mapping: consolidate dma_set_maskChristoph Hellwig
Almost everyone implements dma_set_mask the same way, although some time that's hidden in ->set_dma_mask methods. This patch consolidates those into a common implementation that either calls ->set_dma_mask if present or otherwise uses the default implementation. Some architectures used to only call ->set_dma_mask after the initial checks, and those instance have been fixed to do the full work. h8300 implemented dma_set_mask bogusly as a no-ops and has been fixed. Unfortunately some architectures overload unrelated semantics like changing the dma_ops into it so we still need to allow for an architecture override for now. 2015-08-10alpha/time: Migrate to new 'set-state' interfaceViresh Kumar
Migrate alpha driver to the new 'set-state' interface provided by clockevents core, the earlier 'set-mode' interface is marked obsolete now. This also enables us to implement callbacks for new states of clockevent devices, for example: ONESHOT_STOPPED. rtc clockevent device wasn't doing anything in set-mode and so its set-state callbacks aren't implemented. 2015-07-29alpha: Fix jiffies based cputime assumptionFrederic Weisbecker
That code wrongly assumes that cputime_t wraps jiffies_t. Lets use the correct accessors/mutators. In practice there should be no harm yet because alpha currently only support tick based cputime accounting which is always jiffies based. 2015-07-23PCI: Call pci_read_bridge_bases() from core instead of arch codeLorenzo Pieralisi
When we scan a PCI bus, we read PCI-PCI bridge window registers with pci_read_bridge_bases() so we can validate the resource hierarchy. Most architectures call pci_read_bridge_bases() from pcibios_fixup_bus(), but PCI-PCI bridges are not arch-specific, so this doesn't need to be in arch-specific code. Call pci_read_bridge_bases() directly from the PCI core instead of from arch code. For alpha and mips, we now call pci_read_bridge_bases() always; previously we only called it if PCI_PROBE_ONLY was set.
