2018-10-31memblock: stop using implicit alignment to SMP_CACHE_BYTESMike Rapoport
When a memblock allocation APIs are called with align = 0, the alignment is implicitly set to SMP_CACHE_BYTES. Implicit alignment is done deep in the memblock allocator and it can come as a surprise. Not that such an alignment would be wrong even when used incorrectly but it is better to be explicit for the sake of clarity and the prinicple of the least surprise. Replace all such uses of memblock APIs with the 'align' parameter explicitly set to SMP_CACHE_BYTES and stop implicit alignment assignment in the memblock internal allocation functions. For the case when memblock APIs are used via helper functions, e.g. like iommu_arena_new_node() in Alpha, the helper functions were detected with Coccinelle's help and then manually examined and updated where appropriate. The direct memblock APIs users were updated using the semantic patch below: @@ expression size, min_addr, max_addr, nid; @@ ( | - memblock_alloc_try_nid_raw(size, 0, min_addr, max_addr, nid) + memblock_alloc_try_nid_raw(size, SMP_CACHE_BYTES, min_addr, max_addr, nid) | - memblock_alloc_try_nid_nopanic(size, 0, min_addr, max_addr, nid) + memblock_alloc_try_nid_nopanic(size, SMP_CACHE_BYTES, min_addr, max_addr, nid) | - memblock_alloc_try_nid(size, 0, min_addr, max_addr, nid) + memblock_alloc_try_nid(size, SMP_CACHE_BYTES, min_addr, max_addr, nid) | - memblock_alloc(size, 0) + memblock_alloc(size, SMP_CACHE_BYTES) | - memblock_alloc_raw(size, 0) + memblock_alloc_raw(size, SMP_CACHE_BYTES) | - memblock_alloc_from(size, 0, min_addr) + memblock_alloc_from(size, SMP_CACHE_BYTES, min_addr) | - memblock_alloc_nopanic(size, 0) + memblock_alloc_nopanic(size, SMP_CACHE_BYTES) | - memblock_alloc_low(size, 0) + memblock_alloc_low(size, SMP_CACHE_BYTES) | - memblock_alloc_low_nopanic(size, 0) + memblock_alloc_low_nopanic(size, SMP_CACHE_BYTES) | - memblock_alloc_from_nopanic(size, 0, min_addr) + memblock_alloc_from_nopanic(size, SMP_CACHE_BYTES, min_addr) | - memblock_alloc_node(size, 0, nid) + memblock_alloc_node(size, SMP_CACHE_BYTES, nid) ) [mhocko@suse.com: changelog update] [akpm@linux-foundation.org: coding-style fixes] [rppt@linux.ibm.com: fix missed uses of implicit alignment] Link: http://lkml.kernel.org/r/20181016133656.GA10925@rapoport-lnx Link: http://lkml.kernel.org/r/1538687224-17535-1-git-send-email-rppt@linux.vnet.ibm.com Signed-off-by: Mike Rapoport <rppt@linux.vnet.ibm.com> Suggested-by: Michal Hocko <mhocko@suse.com> Acked-by: Paul Burton <paul.burton@mips.com> [MIPS] Acked-by: Michael Ellerman <mpe@ellerman.id.au> [powerpc] Acked-by: Michal Hocko <mhocko@suse.com> Cc: Catalin Marinas <catalin.marinas@arm.com> Cc: Chris Zankel <chris@zankel.net> Cc: Geert Uytterhoeven <geert@linux-m68k.org> Cc: Guan Xuetao <gxt@pku.edu.cn> Cc: Ingo Molnar <mingo@redhat.com> Cc: Matt Turner <mattst88@gmail.com> Cc: Michal Simek <monstr@monstr.eu> Cc: Richard Weinberger <richard@nod.at> Cc: Russell King <linux@armlinux.org.uk> Cc: Thomas Gleixner <tglx@linutronix.de> Cc: Tony Luck <tony.luck@intel.com> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@linux-foundation.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>

2018-10-26alpha: switch to NO_BOOTMEMMike Rapoport
Replace bootmem allocator with memblock and enable use of NO_BOOTMEM like on most other architectures. Alpha gets the description of the physical memory from the firmware as an array of memory clusters. Each cluster that is not reserved by the firmware is added to memblock.memory. Once the memblock.memory is set up, we reserve the kernel and initrd pages with memblock reserve. Since we don't need the bootmem bitmap anymore, the code that finds an appropriate place is removed. The conversion does not take care of NUMA support which is marked broken for more than 10 years now. 2018-08-29y2038: Compile utimes()/futimesat() conditionallyArnd Bergmann
There are four generations of utimes() syscalls: utime(), utimes(), futimesat() and utimensat(), each one being a superset of the previous one. For y2038 support, we have to add another one, which is the same as the existing utimensat() but always passes 64-bit times_t based timespec values. There are currently 10 architectures that only use utimensat(), two that use utimes(), futimesat() and utimensat() but not utime(), and 11 architectures that have all four, and those define __ARCH_WANT_SYS_UTIME in order to get a sys_utime implementation. Since all the new architectures only want utimensat(), moving all the legacy entry points into a common __ARCH_WANT_SYS_UTIME guard simplifies the logic. Only alpha and ia64 grow a tiny bit as they now also get an unused sys_utime(), but it didn't seem worth the extra complexity of adding yet another ifdef for those. 2018-08-29y2038: Remove newstat family from default syscall setArnd Bergmann
We have four generations of stat() syscalls: - the oldstat syscalls that are only used on the older architectures - the newstat family that is used on all 64-bit architectures but lacked support for large files on 32-bit architectures. - the stat64 family that is used mostly on 32-bit architectures to replace newstat - statx() to replace all of the above, adding 64-bit timestamps among other things. We already compile stat64 only on those architectures that need it, but newstat is always built, including on those that don't reference it. This adds a new __ARCH_WANT_NEW_STAT symbol along the lines of __ARCH_WANT_OLD_STAT and __ARCH_WANT_STAT64 to control compilation of newstat. All architectures that need it use an explict define, the others now get a little bit smaller, and future architecture (including 64-bit targets) won't ever see it. 2018-08-16alpha: use alpha_ni_syscall only for syscall zeroAl Viro
Once upon a time it used to have a C part that printed a warning about unimplemented OSF syscalls. That's what it's been doing all over the OSF syscall range, while the native Linux syscall range uses sys_ni_syscall(). With those warnings about unimplemented OSF syscalls gone (circa 2.4), alpha_ni_syscall() has shrunk to that little bit of asm and the only reason it hasn't been replaced with sys_ni_syscall() everywhere is that extra twist needed in case of syscall #0. Let's keep it only for syscall #0 and replace the rest with sys_ni_syscall. And use sys_ni_syscall for "number out range" in ptraced-call case, as we'd been doing for normal codepath since 2.1.86... 2018-07-25locking/atomics: Rework ordering barriersMark Rutland
Currently architectures can override __atomic_op_*() to define the barriers used before/after a relaxed atomic when used to build acquire/release/fence variants. This has the unfortunate property of requiring the architecture to define the full wrapper for the atomics, rather than just the barriers they care about, and gets in the way of generating atomics which can be easily read. Instead, this patch has architectures define an optional set of barriers: * __atomic_acquire_fence() * __atomic_release_fence() * __atomic_pre_full_fence() * __atomic_post_full_fence() ... which <linux/atomic.h> uses to build the wrappers. It would be nice if we could undef these, along with the __atomic_op_*() wrappers, but that would break the cmpxchg() wrappers, which are written in preprocessor. Undefs would have been nice, but alas. There should be no functional change as a result of this patch. 2018-06-21atomics/treewide: Make test ops optionalMark Rutland
Some of the atomics return the result of a test applied after the atomic operation, and almost all architectures implement these as trivial wrappers around the underlying atomic. Specifically: * <atomic>_inc_and_test(v) is (<atomic>_inc_return(v) == 0) * <atomic>_dec_and_test(v) is (<atomic>_dec_return(v) == 0) * <atomic>_sub_and_test(i, v) is (<atomic>_sub_return(i, v) == 0) * <atomic>_add_negative(i, v) is (<atomic>_add_return(i, v) < 0) Rather than have these definitions duplicated in all architectures, with minor inconsistencies in formatting and documentation, let's make these operations optional, with default fallbacks as above. Implementations must now provide a preprocessor symbol. The instrumented atomics are updated accordingly. Both x86 and m68k have custom implementations, which are left as-is, given preprocessor symbols to avoid being overridden. There should be no functional change as a result of this patch. 2018-06-21atomics/alpha: Define atomic64_fetch_add_unless()Mark Rutland
As a step towards unifying the atomic/atomic64/atomic_long APIs, this patch converts the arch/alpha implementation of atomic64_add_unless() into an implementation of atomic64_fetch_add_unless(). A wrapper in <linux/atomic.h> will build atomic_add_unless() atop of this, provided it is given a preprocessor definition. No functional change is intended as a result of this patch. 2018-06-21atomics/treewide: Make atomic_fetch_add_unless() optionalMark Rutland
Several architectures these have a near-identical implementation based on atomic_read() and atomic_cmpxchg() which we can instead define in <linux/atomic.h>, so let's do so, using something close to the existing x86 implementation with try_cmpxchg(). Where an architecture provides its own atomic_fetch_add_unless(), it must define a preprocessor symbol for it. The instrumented atomics are updated accordingly. Note that arch/arc's existing atomic_fetch_add_unless() had redundant barriers, as these are already present in its atomic_cmpxchg() implementation. There should be no functional change as a result of this patch. 2018-06-21atomics/treewide: Make atomic64_inc_not_zero() optionalMark Rutland
We define a trivial fallback for atomic_inc_not_zero(), but don't do the same for atomic64_inc_not_zero(), leading most architectures to define the same boilerplate. Let's add a fallback in <linux/atomic.h>, and remove the redundant implementations. Note that atomic64_add_unless() is always defined in <linux/atomic.h>, and promotes its arguments to the requisite types, so we need not do this explicitly. 2018-06-21atomics/treewide: Rename __atomic_add_unless() => atomic_fetch_add_unless()Mark Rutland
While __atomic_add_unless() was originally intended as a building-block for atomic_add_unless(), it's now used in a number of places around the kernel. It's the only common atomic operation named __atomic*(), rather than atomic_*(), and for consistency it would be better named atomic_fetch_add_unless(). This lack of consistency is slightly confusing, and gets in the way of scripting atomics. Given that, let's clean things up and promote it to an official part of the atomics API, in the form of atomic_fetch_add_unless(). This patch converts definitions and invocations over to the new name, including the instrumented version, using the following script: ---- git grep -w __atomic_add_unless | while read line; do sed -i '{s/\<__atomic_add_unless\>/atomic_fetch_add_unless/}' "${line%%:*}"; done git grep -w __arch_atomic_add_unless | while read line; do sed -i '{s/\<__arch_atomic_add_unless\>/arch_atomic_fetch_add_unless/}' "${line%%:*}"; done ---- Note that we do not have atomic{64,_long}_fetch_add_unless(), which will be introduced by later patches. There should be no functional change as a result of this patch. 2018-06-12alpha: Remove custom dec_and_lock() implementationSebastian Andrzej Siewior
Alpha provides a custom implementation of dec_and_lock(). The functions is split into two parts: - atomic_add_unless() + return 0 (fast path in assembly) - remaining part including locking (slow path in C) Comparing the result of the alpha implementation with the generic implementation compiled by gcc it looks like the fast path is optimized by avoiding a stack frame (and reloading the GP), register store and all this. This is only done in the slowpath. After marking the slowpath (atomic_dec_and_lock_1()) as "noinline" and doing the slowpath in C (the atomic_add_unless(atomic, -1, 1) part) I noticed differences in the resulting assembly: - the GP is still reloaded - atomic_add_unless() adds more memory barriers compared to the custom assembly - the custom assembly here does "load, sub, beq" while atomic_add_unless() does "load, cmpeq, add, bne". This is okay because it compares against zero after subtraction while the generic code compares against 1 before. I'm not sure if avoiding the stack frame (and GP reloading) brings a lot in terms of performance. Regarding the different barriers, Peter Zijlstra says: |refcount decrement needs to be a RELEASE operation, such that all the |load/stores to the object happen before we decrement the refcount. | |Otherwise things like: | | obj->foo = 5; | refcnt_dec(&obj->ref); | |can be re-ordered, which then allows fun scenarios like: | | CPU0 CPU1 | | refcnt_dec(&obj->ref); | if (dec_and_test(&obj->ref)) | free(obj); | obj->foo = 5; // oops UaF | | |This means (for alpha) that there should be a memory barrier _before_ |the decrement, however the dec_and_lock asm thing only has one _after_, |which, per the above, is too late. | |The generic version using add_unless will result in memory barrier |before and after (because that is the rule for atomic ops with a return |value) which is strictly too many barriers for the refcount story, but |who knows what other ordering requirements code has. Remove the custom alpha implementation of dec_and_lock() and if it is an issue (performance wise) then the fast path could still be inlined. That depends on getting the number of places that directly manipulate struct siginfo under control, as it requires the introduction of struct kernel_siginfo for the in kernel things.
