2022-07-22ARM: ep93xx: mark most board files as unusedArnd Bergmann
Most of the remaining ARM board files in the kernel have no known users, and we plan to remove those in early 2023. For ep93xx, Alexander Sverdlin still has access to the edb93xx family of reference boards, while Nikita Shubin has a ts7250 and is working on a device tree conversion for those. Hartley Sweeten has a MACH_VISION_EP9307 that is still in use. This is a total of nine machine definitions that we will keep around, but these are all similar machines and are defined in only two board files. The other six board files now have a dependency on CONFIG_UNUSED_BOARD_FILES to indicate that they are likely going away. 2022-07-22ARM: defconfig: remove stale CONFIG_ZBOOT_ROM entriesArnd Bergmann
The default is always 0x0 after commit 39c3e304567a ("ARM: 8984/1: Kconfig: set default ZBOOT_ROM_TEXT/BSS value to 0x0"), so any defconfig file that has these two lines can now drop them to reduce the diff against the 'make savedefconfig' version. 2022-07-22ARM: refresh defconfig filesArnd Bergmann
A lot of Kconfig options have changed over the years, and we tend to not do a blind 'make defconfig' to refresh the files, to ensure we catch options that should not have gone away. I used some a bit of scripting to only rework the bits where an option moved around in any of the defconfig files, without also dropping any of the other lines, to make it clearer which options we no longer have. 2022-04-04ARM: ep93xx: multiplatform supportArnd Bergmann
With the clock support and the interrupts out of the way, ep93xx can be compiled into the same kernel image as the other ARMv4/v5 platforms. The last obstacle are the two workarounds for broken boot loaders that require us to re-initialize the ethernet controller and/or the watchdog on certain machines. Move this code into the decompressor sources directly, checking for each possibly affected machine individually. Signed-off-by: Arnd Bergmann <arnd@arndb.de>
2021-08-04ARM: ep93xx: remove MaverickCrunch supportArnd Bergmann
The MaverickCrunch support for ep93xx never made it into glibc and was removed from gcc in its 4.8 release in 2012. It is now one of the last parts of arch/arm/ that fails to build with the clang integrated assembler, which is unlikely to ever want to support it. The two alternatives are to force the use of binutils/gas when building the crunch support, or to remove it entirely. According to Hartley Sweeten: "Martin Guy did a lot of work trying to get the maverick crunch working but I was never able to successfully use it for anything. It "kind" of works but depending on the EP93xx silicon revision there are still a number of hardware bugs that either give imprecise or garbage results. I have no problem with removing the kernel support for the maverick crunch." Unless someone else comes up with a good reason to keep it around, remove it now. This touches mostly the ep93xx platform, but removes a bit of code from ARM common ptrace and signal frame handling as well. If there are remaining users of MaverickCrunch, they can use LTS kernels for at least another five years before kernel support ends. CONFIG_MMC_BLOCK_BOUNCE is gone since commit c3dccb74be28 ("mmc: core: Delete bounce buffer Kconfig option"). CONFIG_LBDAF is gone since commit 72deb455b5ec ("block: remove CONFIG_LBDAF"). 2019-06-19ARM: configs: Remove useless UEVENT_HELPER_PATHKrzysztof Kozlowski
Remove the CONFIG_UEVENT_HELPER_PATH because: 1. It is disabled since commit 1be01d4a5714 ("driver: base: Disable CONFIG_UEVENT_HELPER by default") as its dependency (UEVENT_HELPER) was made default to 'n', 2. It is not recommended (help message: "This should not be used today [...] creates a high system load") and was kept only for ancient userland, 3. 2015-12-17ARM: defconfig: use correct debug_ll settingsArnd Bergmann
The debug-ll infrastructure can be configured in two ways, either by selecting a platform specific debug option, or by picking one of the generic options (8250 or pl01x typically). For compatibility with multiplatform kernels, we have changed a couple of platforms to use the former method now when they used to use the latter. Unfortunately, this broke the defconfigs because now they still enable CONFIG_DEBUG_LL_UART_PL01X or CONFIG_DEBUG_LL_UART_8250, and we no longer configure the correct register addresses automatically. Embarrassingly, this was only found in linux-next when the defconfig builds turned up errors for multiple people, and I had not caught those in my own tests, which were done using the randconfig fixes patchset on top, and that has a workaround to avoid a build error when the addresses are not configured. The error was something like: .config:2010:warning: symbol value '' invalid for DEBUG_UART_PHYS .config:2011:warning: symbol value '' invalid for DEBUG_UART_VIRT This patch avoids the problem by removing the respective statements from the defconfig files. Any out of tree defconfig files on the platforms I have changed will have to do the same change or run into the build error above. Any users that have a full .config already set the correct DEBUG_UART_PHYS/VIRT addresses and do not need to change anything. 2011-01-20kconfig: rename CONFIG_EMBEDDED to CONFIG_EXPERTDavid Rientjes
The meaning of CONFIG_EMBEDDED has long since been obsoleted; the option is used to configure any non-standard kernel with a much larger scope than only small devices. This patch renames the option to CONFIG_EXPERT in init/Kconfig and fixes references to the option throughout the kernel. A new CONFIG_EMBEDDED option is added that automatically selects CONFIG_EXPERT when enabled and can be used in the future to isolate options that should only be considered for embedded systems (RISC architectures, SLOB, etc). Calling the option "EXPERT" more accurately represents its intention: only expert users who understand the impact of the configuration changes they are making should enable it.
