2019-12-12nios2: Fix ioremapGuenter Roeck
Commit 5ace77e0b41a ("nios2: remove __ioremap") removed the following code, with the argument that cacheflag is always 0 and the expression would therefore always be false. if (IS_MAPPABLE_UNCACHEABLE(phys_addr) && IS_MAPPABLE_UNCACHEABLE(last_addr) && !(cacheflag & _PAGE_CACHED)) return (void __iomem *)(CONFIG_NIOS2_IO_REGION_BASE + phys_addr); This did not take the "!" in the expression into account. Result is that nios2 images no longer boot. Restoring the removed code fixes the problem. git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/ebiederm/user-namespace Pull sysctl system call removal from Eric Biederman: "As far as I can tell we have reached the point where no one enables the sysctl system call anymore. It still is enabled in a few defconfigs but they are mostly the rarely used one and in asking people about that it was more cut & paste enabled than anything else. This is single commit that just deletes code. Leaving just enough code so that the deprecated sysctl warning continues to be printed. If my analysis turns out to be wrong and someone actually cares it will be easy to revert this commit and have the system call again. There was one new xtensa defconfig in linux-next that enabled the system call this cycle and when asked about it the maintainer of the code replied that it was not enabled on purpose. As of today's linux-next tree that defconfig no longer enables the system call. What we saw in the review discussion was that if we go a step farther than my patch and mess with uapi headers there are pieces of code that won't compile, but nothing minds the system call actually disappearing from the kernel" Link: https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/201910011140.EA0181F13@keescook/ * 'for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/ebiederm/user-namespace: sysctl: Remove the sysctl system call

2019-11-26sysctl: Remove the sysctl system callEric W. Biederman
This system call has been deprecated almost since it was introduced, and in a survey of the linux distributions I can no longer find any of them that enable CONFIG_SYSCTL_SYSCALL. The only indication that I can find that anyone might care is that a few of the defconfigs in the kernel enable CONFIG_SYSCTL_SYSCALL. However this appears in only 31 of 414 defconfigs in the kernel, so I suspect this symbols presence is simply because it is harmless to include rather than because it is necessary. As there appear to be no users of the sysctl system call, remove the code. As this removes one of the few uses of the internal kernel mount of proc I hope this allows for even more simplifications of the proc filesystem. Various architectures that use asm-generic/io.h still defined their own default versions of ioremap_nocache, ioremap_wt and ioremap_wc that point back to plain ioremap directly or indirectly. Remove these definitions and rely on asm-generic/io.h instead. 2019-09-26mm: treewide: clarify pgtable_page_{ctor,dtor}() namingMark Rutland
The naming of pgtable_page_{ctor,dtor}() seems to have confused a few people, and until recently arm64 used these erroneously/pointlessly for other levels of page table. To make it incredibly clear that these only apply to the PTE level, and to align with the naming of pgtable_pmd_page_{ctor,dtor}(), let's rename them to pgtable_pte_page_{ctor,dtor}(). These changes were generated with the following shell script: ---- git grep -lw 'pgtable_page_.tor' | while read FILE; do sed -i '{s/pgtable_page_ctor/pgtable_pte_page_ctor/}' $FILE; sed -i '{s/pgtable_page_dtor/pgtable_pte_page_dtor/}' $FILE; done ---- ... with the documentation re-flowed to remain under 80 columns, and whitespace fixed up in macros to keep backslashes aligned. There should be no functional change as a result of this patch. 2019-09-24mm: consolidate pgtable_cache_init() and pgd_cache_init()Mike Rapoport
Both pgtable_cache_init() and pgd_cache_init() are used to initialize kmem cache for page table allocations on several architectures that do not use PAGE_SIZE tables for one or more levels of the page table hierarchy. Most architectures do not implement these functions and use __weak default NOP implementation of pgd_cache_init(). Since there is no such default for pgtable_cache_init(), its empty stub is duplicated among most architectures. Rename the definitions of pgd_cache_init() to pgtable_cache_init() and drop empty stubs of pgtable_cache_init(). 2019-09-24mm: remove quicklist page table cachesNicholas Piggin
Patch series "mm: remove quicklist page table caches". A while ago Nicholas proposed to remove quicklist page table caches [1]. I've rebased his patch on the curren upstream and switched ia64 and sh to use generic versions of PTE allocation. [1] https://lore.kernel.org/linux-mm/20190711030339.20892-1-npiggin@gmail.com This patch (of 3): Remove page table allocator "quicklists". These have been around for a long time, but have not got much traction in the last decade and are only used on ia64 and sh architectures. The numbers in the initial commit look interesting but probably don't apply anymore. If anybody wants to resurrect this it's in the git history, but it's unhelpful to have this code and divergent allocator behaviour for minor archs. Also it might be better to instead make more general improvements to page allocator if this is still so slow. 2019-07-12nios2: switch to generic version of pte allocationMike Rapoport
nios2 allocates kernel PTE pages with __get_free_pages(GFP_KERNEL | __GFP_ZERO, PTE_ORDER); and user page tables with pte = alloc_pages(GFP_KERNEL, PTE_ORDER); if (pte) clear_highpage(); The PTE_ORDER is hardwired to zero, which makes nios2 implementation almost identical to the generic one. Switch nios2 to the generic version that does exactly the same thing for the kernel page tables and adds __GFP_ACCOUNT for the user PTEs. The pte_free_kernel() and pte_free() versions on nios2 are identical to the generic ones and can be simply dropped. git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/ebiederm/user-namespace Pull force_sig() argument change from Eric Biederman: "A source of error over the years has been that force_sig has taken a task parameter when it is only safe to use force_sig with the current task. The force_sig function is built for delivering synchronous signals such as SIGSEGV where the userspace application caused a synchronous fault (such as a page fault) and the kernel responded with a signal. Because the name force_sig does not make this clear, and because the force_sig takes a task parameter the function force_sig has been abused for sending other kinds of signals over the years. Slowly those have been fixed when the oopses have been tracked down. Remove the CONFIG_UEVENT_HELPER_PATH because: 1. It is not recommended (help message: "This should not be used today [...] creates a high system load") and was kept only for ancient userland, 3. Strangely enough, NIOS2 defines TRACE_IRQFLAGS_SUPPORT twice with different values, which is pointless and confusing. [1] arch/nios2/Kconfig config TRACE_IRQFLAGS_SUPPORT def_bool n [2] arch/nios2/Kconfig.debug config TRACE_IRQFLAGS_SUPPORT def_bool y [1] is included before [2]. In the Kconfig syntax, the first one is effective. So, TRACE_IRQFLAGS_SUPPORT is always 'n'. The second define in arch/nios2/Kconfig.debug is dead code. As synchronous exceptions really only make sense against the current task (otherwise how are you synchronous) remove the task parameter from from force_sig_fault to make it explicit that is what is going on. The two known exceptions that deliver a synchronous exception to a stopped ptraced task have already been changed to force_sig_fault_to_task. The callers have been changed with the following emacs regular expression (with obvious variations on the architectures that take more arguments) to avoid typos: force_sig_fault[(]\([^,]+\)[,]\([^,]+\)[,]\([^,]+\)[,]\W+current[)] -> force_sig_fault(\1,\2,\3) Signed-off-by: "Eric W. Most architectures do not need the memblock memory after the page allocator is initialized, but only few enable ARCH_DISCARD_MEMBLOCK in the arch Kconfig. 2019-05-14init: provide a generic free_initmem implementationMike Rapoport
Patch series "provide a generic free_initmem implementation", v2. Many architectures implement free_initmem() in exactly the same or very similar way: they wrap the call to free_initmem_default() with sometimes different 'poison' parameter. These patches switch those architectures to use a generic implementation that does free_initmem_default(POISON_FREE_INITMEM). This was inspired by Christoph's patches for free_initrd_mem [1] and I shamelessly copied changelog entries from his patches :) [1] https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/20190213174621.29297-1-hch@lst.de/ This patch (of 2): For most architectures free_initmem just a wrapper for the same free_initmem_default(-1) call. git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip Pull unified TLB flushing from Ingo Molnar: "This contains the generic mmu_gather feature from Peter Zijlstra, which is an all-arch unification of TLB flushing APIs, via the following (broad) steps: - enhance the <asm-generic/tlb.h> APIs to cover more arch details - convert most TLB flushing arch implementations to the generic <asm-generic/tlb.h> APIs. - remove leftovers of per arch implementations After this series every single architecture makes use of the unified TLB flushing APIs" * 'core-mm-for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip: mm/resource: Use resource_overlaps() to simplify region_intersects() ia64/tlb: Eradicate tlb_migrate_finish() callback asm-generic/tlb: Remove tlb_table_flush() asm-generic/tlb: Remove tlb_flush_mmu_free() asm-generic/tlb: Remove CONFIG_HAVE_GENERIC_MMU_GATHER asm-generic/tlb: Remove arch_tlb*_mmu() s390/tlb: Convert to generic mmu_gather asm-generic/tlb: Introduce CONFIG_HAVE_MMU_GATHER_NO_GATHER=y arch/tlb: Clean up simple architectures um/tlb: Convert to generic mmu_gather sh/tlb: Convert SH to generic mmu_gather ia64/tlb: Convert to generic mmu_gather arm/tlb: Convert to generic mmu_gather asm-generic/tlb, arch: Invert CONFIG_HAVE_RCU_TABLE_INVALIDATE asm-generic/tlb, ia64: Conditionally provide tlb_migrate_finish() asm-generic/tlb: Provide generic tlb_flush() based on flush_tlb_mm() asm-generic/tlb, arch: Provide generic tlb_flush() based on flush_tlb_range() asm-generic/tlb, arch: Provide generic VIPT cache flush asm-generic/tlb, arch: Provide CONFIG_HAVE_MMU_GATHER_PAGE_SIZE asm-generic/tlb: Provide a comment
2019-04-23arch: mostly remove <asm/segment.h>Christoph Hellwig
A few architectures use <asm/segment.h> internally, but nothing in common code does. Remove all the empty or almost empty versions of it, including the asm-generic one. Signed-off-by: Christoph Hellwig <hch@lst.de> Signed-off-by: Arnd Bergmann <arnd@arndb.de>
