2024-01-30parisc: Fix random data corruption from exception handlerHelge Deller
The current exception handler implementation, which assists when accessing user space memory, may exhibit random data corruption if the compiler decides to use a different register than the specified register %r29 (defined in ASM_EXCEPTIONTABLE_REG) for the error code. If the compiler choose another register, the fault handler will nevertheless store -EFAULT into %r29 and thus trash whatever this register is used for. Looking at the assembly I found that this happens sometimes in emulate_ldd(). To solve the issue, the easiest solution would be if it somehow is possible to tell the fault handler which register is used to hold the error code. Using %0 or %1 in the inline assembly is not posssible as it will show up as e.g. %r29 (with the "%r" prefix), which the GNU assembler can not convert to an integer. This patch takes another, better and more flexible approach: We extend the __ex_table (which is out of the execution path) by one 32-word. In this word we tell the compiler to insert the assembler instruction "or %r0,%r0,%reg", where %reg references the register which the compiler choosed for the error return code. In case of an access failure, the fault handler finds the __ex_table entry and can examine the opcode. The used register is encoded in the lowest 5 bits, and the fault handler can then store -EFAULT into this register. 2023-11-25parisc: Reduce size of the bug_table on 64-bit kernel by halfHelge Deller

2023-11-15parisc: fix mmap_base calculation when stack grows upwardsHelge Deller
Matoro reported various userspace crashes on the parisc platform with kernel 6.6 and bisected it to commit 3033cd430768 ("parisc: Use generic mmap top-down layout and brk randomization"). That commit switched parisc to use the common infrastructure to calculate mmap_base, but missed that the mmap_base() function takes care for architectures where the stack grows downwards only. Fix the mmap_base() calculation to include the stack-grows-upwards case and thus fix the userspace crashes on parisc. Instead of using arch_dma_alloc if none of the generic coherent allocators are used, require the architectures to explicitly opt into providing it. This will used to deal with the case of m68knommu and coldfire where we can't do any coherent allocations whatsoever, and also makes it clear that arch_dma_alloc is a last resort. parisc uses a top-down layout by default that exactly fits the generic functions, so get rid of arch specific code and use the generic version by selecting ARCH_WANT_DEFAULT_TOPDOWN_MMAP_LAYOUT. Note that on parisc the stack always grows up and a "unlimited stack" simply means that the value as defined in CONFIG_STACK_MAX_DEFAULT_SIZE_MB should be used. 2023-08-18parisc: mm: convert to GENERIC_IOREMAPBaoquan He
By taking GENERIC_IOREMAP method, the generic generic_ioremap_prot(), generic_iounmap(), and their generic wrapper ioremap_prot(), ioremap() and iounmap() are all visible and available to arch. Arch needs to provide wrapper functions to override the generic versions if there's arch specific handling in its ioremap_prot(), ioremap() or iounmap(). This change will simplify implementation by removing duplicated code with generic_ioremap_prot() and generic_iounmap(), and has the equivalent functioality as before. Here, add wrapper function ioremap_prot() for parisc's special operation when iounmap(). The current fully serialized bringup does the following per AP: 1) Prepare callbacks (allocate, intialize, create threads) 2) Kick the AP alive (e.g. INIT/SIPI on x86) 3) Wait for the AP to report alive state 4) Let the AP continue through the atomic bringup 5) Let the AP run the threaded bringup to full online state There are two significant delays: #3 The time for an AP to report alive state in start_secondary() on x86 has been measured in the range between 350us and 3.5ms depending on vendor and CPU type, BIOS microcode size etc. #4 The atomic bringup does the microcode update. This has been measured to take up to ~8ms on the primary threads depending on the microcode patch size to apply. On a two socket SKL server with 56 cores (112 threads) the boot CPU spends on current mainline about 800ms busy waiting for the APs to come up and apply microcode. That's more than 80% of the actual onlining procedure. This can be reduced significantly by splitting the bringup mechanism into two parts: 1) Run the prepare callbacks and kick the AP alive for each AP which needs to be brought up. The APs wake up, do their firmware initialization and run the low level kernel startup code including microcode loading in parallel up to the first synchronization point. (#1 and #2 above) 2) Run the rest of the bringup code strictly serialized per CPU (#3 - #5 above) as it's done today. Parallelizing that stage of the CPU bringup might be possible in theory, but it's questionable whether required surgery would be justified for a pretty small gain. If the system is large enough the first AP is already waiting at the first synchronization point when the boot CPU finished the wake-up of the last AP. That reduces the AP bringup time on that SKL from ~800ms to ~80ms, i.e. by a factor ~10x. The actual gain varies wildly depending on the system, CPU, microcode patch size and other factors. There are some opportunities to reduce the overhead further, but that needs some deep surgery in the x86 CPU bringup code. For now this is only enabled on x86, but the core functionality obviously works for all SMP capable architectures. - Enhancements for SMP function call tracing so it is possible to locate the scheduling and the actual execution points. We introduce a new HAS_IOPORT Kconfig option to indicate support for I/O Port access. In a future patch HAS_IOPORT=n will disable compilation of the I/O accessor functions inb()/outb() and friends on architectures which can not meaningfully support legacy I/O spaces such as s390. The following architectures do not select HAS_IOPORT: * ARC * C-SKY * Hexagon * Nios II * OpenRISC * s390 * User-Mode Linux * Xtensa All other architectures select HAS_IOPORT at least conditionally. The "depends on" relations on HAS_IOPORT in drivers as well as ifdefs for HAS_IOPORT specific sections will be added in subsequent patches on a per subsystem basis. 2022-09-15parisc: Allow CONFIG_64BIT with ARCH=pariscHelge Deller
The previous patch triggered a build failure for the debian kernel, which has CONFIG_64BIT enabled, uses the CROSS_COMPILER environment variable and uses ARCH=parisc to configure the kernel for 64-bit support. This patch weakens the previous patch while keeping the recommended way to configure the kernel with: ARCH=parisc -> build 32-bit kernel ARCH=parisc64 -> build 64-bit kernel while adding the possibility for debian to configure a 64-bit kernel even if ARCH=parisc is set (PA8X00 CPU has to be selected and CONFIG_64BIT needs to be enabled). The downside of this patch is, that we now have a small window open again where people may get it wrong: if they enable CONFIG_64BIT and try to compile with a 32-bit compiler. All architecture-independent users of virt_to_bus() and bus_to_virt() have been fixed to use the dma mapping interfaces or have been removed now. This means the definitions on most architectures, and the CONFIG_VIRT_TO_BUS symbol are now obsolete and can be removed. The only exceptions to this are a few network and scsi drivers for m68k Amiga and VME machines and ppc32 Macintosh. These drivers work correctly with the old interfaces and are probably not worth changing. On alpha and parisc, virt_to_bus() were still used in asm/floppy.h. alpha can use isa_virt_to_bus() like x86 does, and parisc can just open-code the virt_to_phys() here, as this is architecture specific code. I tried updating the bus-virt-phys-mapping.rst documentation, which started as an email from Linus to explain some details of the Linux-2.0 driver interfaces. The bits about virt_to_bus() were declared obsolete backin 2000, and the rest is not all that relevant any more, so in the end I just decided to remove the file completely. Add relevant code to __cpu_die() and __cpu_disable() to finally enable the CPU hotplugging features. Reset the irq count values in smp_callin() to zero before bringing up the CPU. It seems that the firmware may need up to 8 seconds to fully stop a CPU in which no other PDC calls are allowed to be made. Use a timeout __cpu_die() to accommodate for this. This patch drops the CONFIG_PARISC_SELF_EXTRACT option. The palo boot loader is able to decompress a kernel which was compressed with gzip. That possibility was useful when the Linux kernel self-extracting feature wasn't implemented yet. Beside the fact that the self-extracting feature offers much better compression rates, we do support self-extracting kernels already since kernel v4.14, so now it's really time to get rid of that old option and always use the self-extractor. 2022-03-11parisc: Add vDSO supportHelge Deller
Add minimal vDSO support, which provides the signal trampoline helpers, but none of the userspace syscall helpers like time wrappers. The big benefit of this vDSO implementation is, that we now don't need an executeable stack any longer. PA-RISC is one of the last architectures where an executeable stack was needed in oder to implement the signal trampolines by putting assembly instructions on the stack which then gets executed. Instead the kernel will provide the relevant code in the vDSO page and only put the pointers to the signal information on the stack. By dropping the need for executable stacks we avoid running into issues with applications which want non executable stacks for security reasons. Additionally, alternative stacks on memory areas without exec permissions are supported too. This code is based on an initial implementation by Randolph Chung from 2006: https://lore.kernel.org/linux-parisc/4544A34A.6080700@tausq.org/ I did the porting and lifted the code to current code base. Dave fixed the unwind code so that gdb and glibc are able to backtrace through the code. An additional patch to gdb will be pushed upstream by Dave. 2022-02-25uaccess: generalize access_ok()Arnd Bergmann
There are many different ways that access_ok() is defined across architectures, but in the end, they all just compare against the user_addr_max() value or they accept anything. Provide one definition that works for most architectures, checking against TASK_SIZE_MAX for user processes or skipping the check inside of uaccess_kernel() sections. For architectures without CONFIG_SET_FS(), this should be the fastest check, as it comes down to a single comparison of a pointer against a compile-time constant, while the architecture specific versions tend to do something more complex for historic reasons or get something wrong. Type checking for __user annotations is handled inconsistently across architectures, but this is easily simplified as well by using an inline function that takes a 'const void __user *' argument. A handful of callers need an extra __user annotation for this. Some architectures had trick to use 33-bit or 65-bit arithmetic on the addresses to calculate the overflow, however this simpler version uses fewer registers, which means it can produce better object code in the end despite needing a second (statically predicted) branch. 2022-01-11parisc: Enable TOC (transfer of contents) feature unconditionallyHelge Deller
Before this patch, the TOC code used a pre-allocated stack of 16kb for each possible CPU. That space overhead was the reason why the TOC feature wasn't enabled by default for 32-bit kernels. This patch rewrites the TOC code to use a per-cpu stack. That way we use much less memory now and as such we enable the TOC feature by default on all kernels. Additionally the dump of the registers and the stacktrace wasn't serialized, which led to multiple CPUs printing the stack backtrace at once which rendered the output unreadable. Compile-testing drivers that require access to a firmware layer fails when that firmware symbol is unavailable. This happened twice this week: - My proposed to change to rework the QCOM_SCM firmware symbol broke on ppc64 and others. - The cs_dsp firmware patch added device specific firmware loader into drivers/firmware, which broke on the same set of architectures. We should probably do the same thing for other subsystems as well, but fix this one first as this is a dependency for other patches getting merged. 2021-09-09parisc: Implement __get/put_kernel_nofault()Helge Deller
Remove CONFIG_SET_FS from parisc, so we need to add __get_kernel_nofault() and __put_kernel_nofault(), define HAVE_GET_KERNEL_NOFAULT and remove set_fs(), get_fs(), load_sr2(), thread_info->addr_limit, KERNEL_DS and USER_DS. The nice side-effect of this patch is that we now can directly access userspace via sr3 without the need to use a temporary sr2 which is either copied from sr3 or set to zero (for kernel space). 2021-07-30arch: Kconfig: clean up obsolete use of HAVE_IDELukas Bulwahn
The arch-specific Kconfig files use HAVE_IDE to indicate if IDE is supported. As IDE support and the HAVE_IDE config vanishes with commit b7fb14d3ac63 ("ide: remove the legacy ide driver"), there is no need to mention HAVE_IDE in all those arch-specific Kconfig files. The issue was identified with ./scripts/checkkconfigsymbols.py. Most architectures do not need a custom implementation, and in most cases the generic implementation is preferred, so change the polariy on these Kconfig symbols to require architectures to select them when they provide their own version. The new name is CONFIG_ARCH_HAS_{STRNCPY_FROM,STRNLEN}_USER. The remaining architectures at the moment are: ia64, mips, parisc, um and xtensa. We should probably convert these as well, but I was not sure how far to take this series. Thomas Bogendoerfer had some concerns about converting mips but may still do some more detailed measurements to see which version is better. Cc: "James E.J.
