2019-07-04powerpc/pseries: Introduce rwlock to gatekeep DTLB usageNaveen N. Rao
Since we would be introducing a new user of the DTL buffer in a subsequent patch, we need a way to gatekeep use of the DTL buffer. The current debugfs interface for DTL allows registering and opening cpu-specific DTL buffers. Cpu specific files are exposed under debugfs 'powerpc/dtl/' node, and changing 'dtl_event_mask' in the same directory enables controlling the event mask used when registering DTL buffer for a particular cpu. Subsequently, we will be introducing a user of the DTL buffers that registers access to the DTL buffers across all cpus with the same event mask. To ensure these two users do not step on each other, we introduce a rwlock to gatekeep DTL buffer access. This fits the requirement of the current debugfs interface wanting to allow multiple independent cpu-specific users (read lock), and the subsequent user wanting exclusive access (write lock). 2019-07-04powerpc/pseries: Do not save the previous DTL mask valueNaveen N. Rao
When CONFIG_VIRT_CPU_ACCOUNTING_NATIVE is enabled, we always initialize DTL enable mask to DTL_LOG_PREEMPT (0x2). There are no other places where the mask is changed. As such, when reading the DTL log buffer through debugfs, there is no need to save and restore the previous mask value. We don't need to save and restore the earlier mask value if CONFIG_VIRT_CPU_ACCOUNTING_NATIVE is not enabled. So, remove the field from the structure as well. 2019-07-03powerpc/pseries/dma: Enable SWIOTLBAlexey Kardashevskiy
So far the pseries platforms has always been using IOMMU making SWIOTLB unnecessary. Now we want secure guests which means devices can only access certain areas of guest physical memory; we are going to use SWIOTLB for this purpose. This allows SWIOTLB for pseries. By default there is no change in behavior. This enables SWIOTLB when the "swiotlb" kernel parameter is set to "force". With the SWIOTLB enabled, the kernel creates a directly mapped DMA window (using the usual DDW mechanism) and implements SWIOTLB on top of that. 2019-06-24bus_find_device: Unify the match callback with class_find_deviceSuzuki K Poulose
There is an arbitrary difference between the prototypes of bus_find_device() and class_find_device() preventing their callers from passing the same pair of data and match() arguments to both of them, which is the const qualifier used in the prototype of class_find_device(). If that qualifier is also used in the bus_find_device() prototype, it will be possible to pass the same match() callback function to both bus_find_device() and class_find_device(), which will allow some optimizations to be made in order to avoid code duplication going forward. Also with that, constify the "data" parameter as it is passed as a const to the match function. For this reason, change the prototype of bus_find_device() to match the prototype of class_find_device() and adjust its callers to use the const qualifier in accordance with the new prototype of it. A couple of bugs in queue_hotplug_event(): 1. Unchecked kmalloc result which could lead to an oops. 2. Use of GFP_KERNEL allocations in interrupt context (this code's only caller is ras_hotplug_interrupt()). Use kmemdup to avoid open-coding the allocation+copy and check for failure; use GFP_ATOMIC for both allocations. Ultimately it probably would be better to avoid or reduce allocations in this path if possible. It's common for the platform to replace the cache device nodes after a migration. During post-migration device tree updates, we can oops in pseries_update_drconf_memory() if the source device tree has an ibm,dynamic-memory-v2 property and the destination has a ibm,dynamic_memory (v1) property. The notifier processes an "update" for the ibm,dynamic-memory property but it's really an add in this scenario. So make sure the old property object is there before dereferencing it. It occurs because the hypercall to put characters onto the terminal takes 2 longs (128 bits/16 bytes) of characters at a time, and so hvc_put_chars() would unconditionally copy 16 bytes from the argument buffer, regardless of supplied length. When removing memory we need to remove the memory from the node it was added to instead of looking up the node it should be in in the device tree. During testing we have seen scenarios where the affinity for a LMB changes due to a partition migration or PRRN event. In these cases the node the LMB exists in may not match the node the device tree indicates it belongs in. This can lead to a system crash when trying to DLPAR remove the LMB after a migration or PRRN event. 2019-04-20powerpc/mm: move warning from resize_hpt_for_hotplug()Laurent Vivier
resize_hpt_for_hotplug() reports a warning when it cannot resize the hash page table ("Unable to resize hash page table to target order") but in some cases it's not a problem and can make user thinks something has not worked properly. This patch moves the warning to arch_remove_memory() to only report the problem when it is needed. In cpu_to_drc_index() in the case when FW_FEATURE_DRC_INFO is absent, we currently use of_read_property() to obtain the pointer to the array corresponding to the property "ibm,drc-indexes". The elements of this array are of type __be32, but are accessed without any conversion to the OS-endianness, which is buggy on a Little Endian OS. Fix this by using of_property_read_u32_index() accessor function to safely read the elements of the array. Some users want to use persistent memory as additional volatile memory. They are willing to cope with potential performance differences, for example between DRAM and 3D Xpoint, and want to use typical Linux memory management apis rather than a userspace memory allocator layered over an mmap() of a dax file. The administration model is to decide how much Persistent Memory (pmem) to use as System RAM, create a device-dax-mode namespace of that size, and then assign it to the core-mm. The rationale for device-dax is that it is a generic memory-mapping driver that can be layered over any "special purpose" memory, not just pmem. On subsequent boots udev rules can be used to restore the memory assignment. One implication of using pmem as RAM is that mlock() no longer keeps data off persistent media. For this reason it is recommended to enable NVDIMM Security (previously merged for 5.0) to encrypt pmem contents at rest. We considered making this recommendation an actively enforced requirement, but in the end decided to leave it as a distribution / administrator policy to allow for emulation and test environments that lack security capable NVDIMMs. Summary: - Replace the /sys/class/dax device model with /sys/bus/dax, and include a compat driver so distributions can opt-in to the new ABI. - Allow for an alternative driver for the device-dax address-range - Introduce the 'kmem' driver to hotplug / assign a device-dax address-range to the core-mm. - Arrange for the device-dax target-node to be onlined so that the newly added memory range can be uniquely referenced by numa apis" NOTE! I'm not entirely happy with the whole "PMEM as RAM" model because we currently have special - and very annoying rules in the kernel about accessing PMEM only with the "MC safe" accessors, because machine checks inside the regular repeat string copy functions can be fatal in some (not described) circumstances. And apparently the PMEM modules can cause that a lot more than regular RAM. The argument is that this happens because PMEM doesn't necessarily get scrubbed at boot like RAM does, but that is planned to be added for the user space tooling. Quoting Dan from another email: "The exposure can be reduced in the volatile-RAM case by scanning for and clearing errors before it is onlined as RAM. The userspace tooling for that can be in place before v5.1-final. There's also runtime notifications of errors via acpi_nfit_uc_error_notify() from background scrubbers on the DIMM devices. With that mechanism the kernel could proactively clear newly discovered poison in the volatile case, but that would be additional development more suitable for v5.2. I understand the concern, and the need to highlight this issue by tapping the brakes on feature development, but I don't see PMEM as RAM making the situation worse when the exposure is also there via DAX in the PMEM case. 2019-03-07powerpc: prefer memblock APIs returning virtual addressMike Rapoport
Patch series "memblock: simplify several early memory allocation", v4. These patches simplify some of the early memory allocations by replacing usage of older memblock APIs with newer and shinier ones. Quite a few places in the arch/ code allocated memory using a memblock API that returns a physical address of the allocated area, then converted this physical address to a virtual one and then used memset(0) to clear the allocated range. More recent memblock APIs do all the three steps in one call and their usage simplifies the code. It's important to note that regardless of API used, the core allocation is nearly identical for any set of memblock allocators: first it tries to find a free memory with all the constraints specified by the caller and then falls back to the allocation with some or all constraints disabled. The first three patches perform the conversion of call sites that have exact requirements for the node and the possible memory range. The fourth patch is a bit one-off as it simplifies openrisc's implementation of pte_alloc_one_kernel(), and not only the memblock usage. The fifth patch takes care of simpler cases when the allocation can be satisfied with a simple call to memblock_alloc(). The sixth patch removes one-liner wrappers for memblock_alloc on arm and unicore32, as suggested by Christoph. This patch (of 6): There are a several places that allocate memory using memblock APIs that return a physical address, convert the returned address to the virtual address and frequently also memset(0) the allocated range. Update these places to use memblock allocators already returning a virtual address. Use memblock functions that clear the allocated memory instead of calling memset(0) where appropriate. The calls to memblock_alloc_base() that were not followed by memset(0) are replaced with memblock_alloc_try_nid_raw(). Since the latter does not panic() when the allocation fails, the appropriate panic() calls are added to the call sites. The Processor Utilzation of Resource Registers (PURR) provide an estimate of resources used by a cpu thread. Section 7.6 in Book III of the ISA outlines how to calculate the percentage of shared resources for threads using the ratio of the PURR delta and Timebase Register delta for a sampled period. This calculation is currently done erroneously by the lparstat tool from the powerpc-utils package. This patch exports the current timebase value after we sample the PURRs and exposes it to userspace accounting tools via /proc/ppc64/lparcfg. 2019-02-01powerpc/papr_scm: Use the correct bind addressOliver O'Halloran
When binding an SCM volume to a physical address the hypervisor has the option to return early with a continue token with the expectation that the guest will resume the bind operation until it completes. A quirk of this interface is that the bind address will only be returned by the first bind h-call and the subsequent calls will return 0xFFFF_FFFF_FFFF_FFFF for the bind address. We currently do not save the address returned by the first h-call. As a result we will use the junk address as the base of the bound region if the hypervisor decides to split the bind across multiple h-calls. This bug was found when testing with very large SCM volumes where the bind process would take more time than they hypervisor's internal h-call time limit would allow. This patch fixes the issue by saving the bind address from the first call. On pseries systems, performing a partition migration can result in altering the nodes a CPU is assigned to on the destination system. For exampl, pre-migration on the source system CPUs are in node 1 and 3, post-migration on the destination system CPUs are in nodes 2 and 3. Handling the node change for a CPU can cause corruption in the slab cache if we hit a timing where a CPUs node is changed while cache_reap() is invoked. The corruption occurs because the slab cache code appears to rely on the CPU and slab cache pages being on the same node. The current dynamic updating of a CPUs node done in arch/powerpc/mm/numa.c does not prevent us from hitting this scenario. Changing the device tree property update notification handler that recognizes an affinity change for a CPU to do a full DLPAR remove and add of the CPU instead of dynamically changing its node resolves this issue. 2019-01-22powerpc: Adopt nvram module for PPC64Finn Thain
Adopt nvram module to reduce code duplication. This means CONFIG_NVRAM becomes available to PPC64 builds. Previously it was only available to PPC32 builds because it depended on CONFIG_GENERIC_NVRAM. The IOC_NVRAM_GET_OFFSET ioctl as implemented on PPC64 validates the offset returned by pmac_get_partition(). Do the same in the nvram module. Note that the old PPC32 generic_nvram module lacked this test. So when CONFIG_PPC32 && CONFIG_PPC_PMAC, the IOC_NVRAM_GET_OFFSET ioctl would have returned 0 (always). But when CONFIG_PPC64 && CONFIG_PPC_PMAC, the IOC_NVRAM_GET_OFFSET ioctl would have returned -1 (which is -EPERM) when the requested partition was not found. With this patch, the result is now -EINVAL on both PPC32 and PPC64 when the requested PowerMac NVRAM partition is not found. This is a userspace- visible change, in the non-existent partition case, which would be in an error path for an IOC_NVRAM_GET_OFFSET ioctl syscall. 2019-01-15powerpc/pseries: Fix build break due to pnv_npu2_init()Jason A. Donenfeld
Commit 3be2df00e299 ("powerpc/pseries/npu: Enable platform support") added a call to pnv_npu2_init() in pseries code. This causes a build break if we build with CONFIG_PPC_PSERIES && !CONFIG_PPC_POWERNV: powerpc64le-pc-linux-gnu-ld: arch/powerpc/platforms/pseries/pci.o: in function `pSeries_final_fixup': pci.c:(.init.text+0x1b0): undefined reference to `pnv_npu2_init' This commit therefore wraps that line in an ifdef, so that pseries builds without powernv.
