2019-03-12treewide: add checks for the return value of memblock_alloc*()Mike Rapoport
Add check for the return value of memblock_alloc*() functions and call panic() in case of error. The panic message repeats the one used by panicing memblock allocators with adjustment of parameters to include only relevant ones. The replacement was mostly automated with semantic patches like the one below with manual massaging of format strings. @@ expression ptr, size, align; @@ ptr = memblock_alloc(size, align); + if (!ptr) + panic("%s: Failed to allocate %lu bytes align=0x%lx\n", __func__, size, align); [anders.roxell@linaro.org: use '%pa' with 'phys_addr_t' type] Link: http://lkml.kernel.org/r/20190131161046.21886-1-anders.roxell@linaro.org [rppt@linux.ibm.com: fix format strings for panics after memblock_alloc] Link: http://lkml.kernel.org/r/1548950940-15145-1-git-send-email-rppt@linux.ibm.com [rppt@linux.ibm.com: don't panic if the allocation in sparse_buffer_init fails] Link: http://lkml.kernel.org/r/20190131074018.GD28876@rapoport-lnx [akpm@linux-foundation.org: fix xtensa printk warning] Link: http://lkml.kernel.org/r/1548057848-15136-20-git-send-email-rppt@linux.ibm.com Signed-off-by: Mike Rapoport <rppt@linux.ibm.com> Signed-off-by: Anders Roxell <anders.roxell@linaro.org> Reviewed-by: Guo Ren <ren_guo@c-sky.com> [c-sky] Acked-by: Paul Burton <paul.burton@mips.com> [MIPS] Acked-by: Heiko Carstens <heiko.carstens@de.ibm.com> [s390] Reviewed-by: Juergen Gross <jgross@suse.com> [Xen] Reviewed-by: Geert Uytterhoeven <geert@linux-m68k.org> [m68k] Acked-by: Max Filippov <jcmvbkbc@gmail.com> [xtensa] Cc: Catalin Marinas <catalin.marinas@arm.com> Cc: Christophe Leroy <christophe.leroy@c-s.fr> Cc: Christoph Hellwig <hch@lst.de> Cc: "David S. 2019-03-07powerpc: prefer memblock APIs returning virtual addressMike Rapoport
Patch series "memblock: simplify several early memory allocation", v4. These patches simplify some of the early memory allocations by replacing usage of older memblock APIs with newer and shinier ones. Quite a few places in the arch/ code allocated memory using a memblock API that returns a physical address of the allocated area, then converted this physical address to a virtual one and then used memset(0) to clear the allocated range. More recent memblock APIs do all the three steps in one call and their usage simplifies the code. It's important to note that regardless of API used, the core allocation is nearly identical for any set of memblock allocators: first it tries to find a free memory with all the constraints specified by the caller and then falls back to the allocation with some or all constraints disabled. The first three patches perform the conversion of call sites that have exact requirements for the node and the possible memory range. The fourth patch is a bit one-off as it simplifies openrisc's implementation of pte_alloc_one_kernel(), and not only the memblock usage. The fifth patch takes care of simpler cases when the allocation can be satisfied with a simple call to memblock_alloc(). The sixth patch removes one-liner wrappers for memblock_alloc on arm and unicore32, as suggested by Christoph. This patch (of 6): There are a several places that allocate memory using memblock APIs that return a physical address, convert the returned address to the virtual address and frequently also memset(0) the allocated range. Update these places to use memblock allocators already returning a virtual address. Use memblock functions that clear the allocated memory instead of calling memset(0) where appropriate. The calls to memblock_alloc_base() that were not followed by memset(0) are replaced with memblock_alloc_try_nid_raw(). Since the latter does not panic() when the allocation fails, the appropriate panic() calls are added to the call sites. 2019-02-23powerpc/32: Remove CURRENT_THREAD_INFO and rename TI_CPUChristophe Leroy
Now that thread_info is similar to task_struct, its address is in r2 so CURRENT_THREAD_INFO() macro is useless. This patch removes it. This patch also moves the 'tovirt(r2, r2)' down just before the reactivation of MMU translation, so that we keep the physical address of 'current' in r2 until then. It avoids a few calls to tophys(). At the same time, as the 'cpu' field is not anymore in thread_info, TI_CPU is renamed TASK_CPU by this patch. It also allows to get rid of a couple of '#ifdef CONFIG_VIRT_CPU_ACCOUNTING_NATIVE' as ACCOUNT_CPU_USER_ENTRY() and ACCOUNT_CPU_USER_EXIT() are empty when CONFIG_VIRT_CPU_ACCOUNTING_NATIVE is not defined. 2018-10-31memblock: stop using implicit alignment to SMP_CACHE_BYTESMike Rapoport
When a memblock allocation APIs are called with align = 0, the alignment is implicitly set to SMP_CACHE_BYTES. Implicit alignment is done deep in the memblock allocator and it can come as a surprise. Not that such an alignment would be wrong even when used incorrectly but it is better to be explicit for the sake of clarity and the prinicple of the least surprise. Replace all such uses of memblock APIs with the 'align' parameter explicitly set to SMP_CACHE_BYTES and stop implicit alignment assignment in the memblock internal allocation functions. For the case when memblock APIs are used via helper functions, e.g. like iommu_arena_new_node() in Alpha, the helper functions were detected with Coccinelle's help and then manually examined and updated where appropriate. The direct memblock APIs users were updated using the semantic patch below: @@ expression size, min_addr, max_addr, nid; @@ ( | - memblock_alloc_try_nid_raw(size, 0, min_addr, max_addr, nid) + memblock_alloc_try_nid_raw(size, SMP_CACHE_BYTES, min_addr, max_addr, nid) | - memblock_alloc_try_nid_nopanic(size, 0, min_addr, max_addr, nid) + memblock_alloc_try_nid_nopanic(size, SMP_CACHE_BYTES, min_addr, max_addr, nid) | - memblock_alloc_try_nid(size, 0, min_addr, max_addr, nid) + memblock_alloc_try_nid(size, SMP_CACHE_BYTES, min_addr, max_addr, nid) | - memblock_alloc(size, 0) + memblock_alloc(size, SMP_CACHE_BYTES) | - memblock_alloc_raw(size, 0) + memblock_alloc_raw(size, SMP_CACHE_BYTES) | - memblock_alloc_from(size, 0, min_addr) + memblock_alloc_from(size, SMP_CACHE_BYTES, min_addr) | - memblock_alloc_nopanic(size, 0) + memblock_alloc_nopanic(size, SMP_CACHE_BYTES) | - memblock_alloc_low(size, 0) + memblock_alloc_low(size, SMP_CACHE_BYTES) | - memblock_alloc_low_nopanic(size, 0) + memblock_alloc_low_nopanic(size, SMP_CACHE_BYTES) | - memblock_alloc_from_nopanic(size, 0, min_addr) + memblock_alloc_from_nopanic(size, SMP_CACHE_BYTES, min_addr) | - memblock_alloc_node(size, 0, nid) + memblock_alloc_node(size, SMP_CACHE_BYTES, nid) ) [mhocko@suse.com: changelog update] [akpm@linux-foundation.org: coding-style fixes] [rppt@linux.ibm.com: fix missed uses of implicit alignment] Link: http://lkml.kernel.org/r/20181016133656.GA10925@rapoport-lnx Link: http://lkml.kernel.org/r/1538687224-17535-1-git-send-email-rppt@linux.vnet.ibm.com Signed-off-by: Mike Rapoport <rppt@linux.vnet.ibm.com> Suggested-by: Michal Hocko <mhocko@suse.com> Acked-by: Paul Burton <paul.burton@mips.com> [MIPS] Acked-by: Michael Ellerman <mpe@ellerman.id.au> [powerpc] Acked-by: Michal Hocko <mhocko@suse.com> Cc: Catalin Marinas <catalin.marinas@arm.com> Cc: Chris Zankel <chris@zankel.net> Cc: Geert Uytterhoeven <geert@linux-m68k.org> Cc: Guan Xuetao <gxt@pku.edu.cn> Cc: Ingo Molnar <mingo@redhat.com> Cc: Matt Turner <mattst88@gmail.com> Cc: Michal Simek <monstr@monstr.eu> Cc: Richard Weinberger <richard@nod.at> Cc: Russell King <linux@armlinux.org.uk> Cc: Thomas Gleixner <tglx@linutronix.de> Cc: Tony Luck <tony.luck@intel.com> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@linux-foundation.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>

2018-10-20powerpc/sysdev/ipic: check primary_ipic NULL pointer before using itChristophe Leroy
ipic_get_mcp_status() is used by targets implementing NMI watchdog in target specific machine check handler in order to known whether a machine check results from a watchdog NMI reset. In case of very early machine check, primary_ipic pointer might not have been set yet, so ipic_get_mcp_status() needs to check it for nullity before using it. 2018-10-19powerpc: Add -Werror at arch/powerpc levelMichael Ellerman
Back when I added -Werror in commit ba55bd74360e ("powerpc: Add configurable -Werror for arch/powerpc") I did it by adding it to most of the arch Makefiles. At the time we excluded math-emu, because apparently it didn't build cleanly. But that seems to have been fixed somewhere in the interim. So move the -Werror addition to the top-level of the arch, this saves us from repeating it in every Makefile and means we won't forget to add it to any new sub-dirs. 2018-10-13powerpc: remove redundant 'default n' from Kconfig-sBartlomiej Zolnierkiewicz
'default n' is the default value for any bool or tristate Kconfig setting so there is no need to write it explicitly. Also since commit f467c5640c29 ("kconfig: only write '# CONFIG_FOO is not set' for visible symbols") the Kconfig behavior is the same regardless of 'default n' being present or not: ... One side effect of (and the main motivation for) this change is making the following two definitions behave exactly the same: config FOO bool config FOO bool default n With this change, neither of these will generate a '# CONFIG_FOO is not set' line (assuming FOO isn't selected/implied). 2018-06-12treewide: kzalloc() -> kcalloc()Kees Cook
The kzalloc() function has a 2-factor argument form, kcalloc(). This patch replaces cases of: kzalloc(a * b, gfp) with: kcalloc(a * b, gfp) as well as handling cases of: kzalloc(a * b * c, gfp) with: kzalloc(array3_size(a, b, c), gfp) as it's slightly less ugly than: kzalloc_array(array_size(a, b), c, gfp) This does, however, attempt to ignore constant size factors like: kzalloc(4 * 1024, gfp) though any constants defined via macros get caught up in the conversion. Any factors with a sizeof() of "unsigned char", "char", and "u8" were dropped, since they're redundant. The Coccinelle script used for this was: // Fix redundant parens around sizeof(). @@ type TYPE; expression THING, E; @@ ( kzalloc( - (sizeof(TYPE)) * E + sizeof(TYPE) * E , ...) | kzalloc( - (sizeof(THING)) * E + sizeof(THING) * E , ...) ) // Drop single-byte sizes and redundant parens. @@ expression COUNT;
