2022-01-20proc: make the proc_create[_data]() stubs static inlinesHans de Goede
Change the proc_create[_data]() stubs which are used when CONFIG_PROC_FS is not set from #defines to a static inline stubs. This should fix clang -Werror builds failing due to errors like this: drivers/platform/x86/thinkpad_acpi.c:918:30: error: unused variable 'dispatch_proc_ops' [-Werror,-Wunused-const-variable] Fixing this in include/linux/proc_fs.h should ensure that the same issue is also fixed in any other drivers hitting the same -Werror issue. With NEED_PER_CPU_PAGE_FIRST_CHUNK enabled, we need a function to populate pte, this patch adds a generic pcpu populate pte function, pcpu_populate_pte(), which is marked __weak and used on most architectures, but it is overridden on x86, which has its own implementation. 2022-01-20mm: percpu: generalize percpu related configKefeng Wang
Patch series "mm: percpu: Cleanup percpu first chunk function". When supporting page mapping percpu first chunk allocator on arm64, we found there are lots of duplicated codes in percpu embed/page first chunk allocator. This patchset is aimed to cleanup them and should no function change. The currently supported status about 'embed' and 'page' in Archs shows below, embed: NEED_PER_CPU_PAGE_FIRST_CHUNK page: NEED_PER_CPU_EMBED_FIRST_CHUNK embed page ------------------------ arm64 Y Y mips Y N powerpc Y Y riscv Y N sparc Y Y x86 Y Y ------------------------ There are two interfaces about percpu first chunk allocator, extern int __init pcpu_embed_first_chunk(size_t reserved_size, size_t dyn_size, size_t atom_size, pcpu_fc_cpu_distance_fn_t cpu_distance_fn, - pcpu_fc_alloc_fn_t alloc_fn, - pcpu_fc_free_fn_t free_fn); + pcpu_fc_cpu_to_node_fn_t cpu_to_nd_fn); extern int __init pcpu_page_first_chunk(size_t reserved_size, - pcpu_fc_alloc_fn_t alloc_fn, - pcpu_fc_free_fn_t free_fn, - pcpu_fc_populate_pte_fn_t populate_pte_fn); + pcpu_fc_cpu_to_node_fn_t cpu_to_nd_fn); The pcpu_fc_alloc_fn_t/pcpu_fc_free_fn_t is killed, we provide generic pcpu_fc_alloc() and pcpu_fc_free() function, which are called in the pcpu_embed/page_first_chunk(). 1) For pcpu_embed_first_chunk(), pcpu_fc_cpu_to_node_fn_t is needed to be provided when archs supported NUMA. 2) For pcpu_page_first_chunk(), the pcpu_fc_populate_pte_fn_t is killed too, a generic pcpu_populate_pte() which marked '__weak' is provided, if you need a different function to populate pte on the arch(like x86), please provide its own implementation. [1] https://github.com/kevin78/linux.git percpu-cleanup This patch (of 4): The HAVE_SETUP_PER_CPU_AREA/NEED_PER_CPU_EMBED_FIRST_CHUNK/ NEED_PER_CPU_PAGE_FIRST_CHUNK/USE_PERCPU_NUMA_NODE_ID configs, which have duplicate definitions on platforms that subscribe it. Move them into mm, drop these redundant definitions and instead just select it on applicable platforms. 2022-01-17Merge branch 'signal-for-v5.17' of ↵Linus Torvalds
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/ebiederm/user-namespace Pull signal/exit/ptrace updates from Eric Biederman: "This set of changes deletes some dead code, makes a lot of cleanups which hopefully make the code easier to follow, and fixes bugs found along the way. The end-game which I have not yet reached yet is for fatal signals that generate coredumps to be short-circuit deliverable from complete_signal, for force_siginfo_to_task not to require changing userspace configured signal delivery state, and for the ptrace stops to always happen in locations where we can guarantee on all architectures that the all of the registers are saved and available on the stack. Removal of profile_task_ext, profile_munmap, and profile_handoff_task are the big successes for dead code removal this round. A bunch of small bug fixes are included, as most of the issues reported were small enough that they would not affect bisection so I simply added the fixes and did not fold the fixes into the changes they were fixing. There was a bug that broke coredumps piped to systemd-coredump. I dropped the change that caused that bug and replaced it entirely with something much more restrained. Unfortunately that required some rebasing. Some successes after this set of changes: There are few enough calls to do_exit to audit in a reasonable amount of time. The lifetime of struct kthread now matches the lifetime of struct task, and the pointer to struct kthread is no longer stored in set_child_tid. The flag SIGNAL_GROUP_COREDUMP is removed. The field group_exit_task is removed. Issues where task->exit_code was examined with signal->group_exit_code should been examined were fixed. There are several loosely related changes included because I am cleaning up and if I don't include them they will probably get lost. 2021-12-13exit: Add and use make_task_dead.Eric W. Biederman
There are two big uses of do_exit. The first is it's design use to be the guts of the exit(2) system call. The second use is to terminate a task after something catastrophic has happened like a NULL pointer in kernel code. Add a function make_task_dead that is initialy exactly the same as do_exit to cover the cases where do_exit is called to handle catastrophic failure. In time this can probably be reduced to just a light wrapper around do_task_dead. For now keep it exactly the same so that there will be no behavioral differences introducing this new concept. Replace all of the uses of do_exit that use it for catastraphic task cleanup with make_task_dead to make it clear what the code is doing. As part of this rename rewind_stack_do_exit rewind_stack_and_make_dead. Signed-off-by: "Eric W. Biederman" <ebiederm@xmission.com>

2021-11-19signal: Replace force_fatal_sig with force_exit_sig when in doubtEric W. Biederman
Recently to prevent issues with SECCOMP_RET_KILL and similar signals being changed before they are delivered SA_IMMUTABLE was added. Unfortunately this broke debuggers[1][2] which reasonably expect to be able to trap synchronous SIGTRAP and SIGSEGV even when the target process is not configured to handle those signals. Add force_exit_sig and use it instead of force_fatal_sig where historically the code has directly called do_exit. This has the implementation benefits of going through the signal exit path (including generating core dumps) without the danger of allowing userspace to ignore or change these signals. This avoids userspace regressions as older kernels exited with do_exit which debuggers also can not intercept. In the future is should be possible to improve the quality of implementation of the kernel by changing some of these force_exit_sig calls to force_fatal_sig. That can be done where it matters on a case-by-case basis with careful analysis. 2021-11-16bpf: Change value of MAX_TAIL_CALL_CNT from 32 to 33Tiezhu Yang
In the current code, the actual max tail call count is 33 which is greater than MAX_TAIL_CALL_CNT (defined as 32). The actual limit is not consistent with the meaning of MAX_TAIL_CALL_CNT and thus confusing at first glance. We can see the historical evolution from commit 04fd61ab36ec ("bpf: allow bpf programs to tail-call other bpf programs") and commit f9dabe016b63 ("bpf: Undo off-by-one in interpreter tail call count limit"). In order to avoid changing existing behavior, the actual limit is 33 now, this is reasonable. After commit 874be05f525e ("bpf, tests: Add tail call test suite"), we can see there exists failed testcase. On all archs when CONFIG_BPF_JIT_ALWAYS_ON is not set: # echo 0 > /proc/sys/net/core/bpf_jit_enable # modprobe test_bpf # dmesg | grep -w FAIL Tail call error path, max count reached jited:0 ret 34 != 33 FAIL On some archs: # echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/core/bpf_jit_enable # modprobe test_bpf # dmesg | grep -w FAIL Tail call error path, max count reached jited:1 ret 34 != 33 FAIL Although the above failed testcase has been fixed in commit 18935a72eb25 ("bpf/tests: Fix error in tail call limit tests"), it would still be good to change the value of MAX_TAIL_CALL_CNT from 32 to 33 to make the code more readable. The 32-bit x86 JIT was using a limit of 32, just fix the wrong comments and limit to 33 tail calls as the constant MAX_TAIL_CALL_CNT updated. For the mips64 JIT, use "ori" instead of "addiu" as suggested by Johan Almbladh. For the riscv JIT, use RV_REG_TCC directly to save one register move as suggested by Björn Töpel. For the other implementations, no function changes, it does not change the current limit 33, the new value of MAX_TAIL_CALL_CNT can reflect the actual max tail call count, the related tail call testcases in test_bpf module and selftests can work well for the interpreter and the JIT. Here are the test results on x86_64: # uname -m x86_64 # echo 0 > /proc/sys/net/core/bpf_jit_enable # modprobe test_bpf test_suite=test_tail_calls # dmesg | tail -1 test_bpf: test_tail_calls: Summary: 8 PASSED, 0 FAILED, [0/8 JIT'ed] # rmmod test_bpf # echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/core/bpf_jit_enable # modprobe test_bpf test_suite=test_tail_calls # dmesg | tail -1 test_bpf: test_tail_calls: Summary: 8 PASSED, 0 FAILED, [8/8 JIT'ed] # rmmod test_bpf # ./test_progs -t tailcalls #142 tailcalls:OK Summary: 1/11 PASSED, 0 SKIPPED, 0 FAILED Signed-off-by: Tiezhu Yang <yangtiezhu@loongson.cn> Signed-off-by: Daniel Borkmann <daniel@iogearbox.net> Tested-by: Johan Almbladh <johan.almbladh@anyfinetworks.com> Tested-by: Ilya Leoshkevich <iii@linux.ibm.com> Acked-by: Björn Töpel <bjorn@kernel.org> Acked-by: Johan Almbladh <johan.almbladh@anyfinetworks.com> Acked-by: Ilya Leoshkevich <iii@linux.ibm.com> Link: https://lore.kernel.org/bpf/1636075800-3264-1-git-send-email-yangtiezhu@loongson.cn

This set of changes introduces force_fatal_sig a way of sending a signal and not allowing it to be caught, and corrects the misuse of the existing abstractions that I found. A lot of the misuse of the existing abstractions are silly things such as doing something after calling a no return function, rolling BUG by hand, doing more work than necessary to terminate a kernel thread, or calling do_exit(SIGKILL) instead of calling force_sig(SIGKILL). In the review a deficiency in force_fatal_sig and force_sig_seccomp where ptrace or sigaction could prevent the delivery of the signal was found. I have added a change that adds SA_IMMUTABLE to change that makes it impossible to interrupt the delivery of those signals, and allows backporting to fix force_sig_seccomp And Arnd found an issue where a function passed to kthread_run had the wrong prototype, and after my cleanup was failing to build." * 'exit-cleanups-for-v5.16' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/ebiederm/user-namespace: (23 commits) soc: ti: fix wkup_m3_rproc_boot_thread return type signal: Add SA_IMMUTABLE to ensure forced siganls do not get changed signal: Replace force_sigsegv(SIGSEGV) with force_fatal_sig(SIGSEGV) exit/r8188eu: Replace the macro thread_exit with a simple return 0 exit/rtl8712: Replace the macro thread_exit with a simple return 0 exit/rtl8723bs: Replace the macro thread_exit with a simple return 0 signal/x86: In emulate_vsyscall force a signal instead of calling do_exit signal/sparc32: In setup_rt_frame and setup_fram use force_fatal_sig signal/sparc32: Exit with a fatal signal when try_to_clear_window_buffer fails exit/syscall_user_dispatch: Send ordinary signals on failure signal: Implement force_fatal_sig exit/kthread: Have kernel threads return instead of calling do_exit signal/s390: Use force_sigsegv in default_trap_handler signal/vm86_32: Properly send SIGSEGV when the vm86 state cannot be saved. signal/vm86_32: Replace open coded BUG_ON with an actual BUG_ON signal/sparc: In setup_tsb_params convert open coded BUG into BUG signal/powerpc: On swapcontext failure force SIGSEGV signal/sh: Use force_sig(SIGKILL) instead of do_group_exit(SIGKILL) signal/mips: Update (_save|_restore)_fp_context to fail with -EFAULT signal/sparc32: Remove unreachable do_exit in do_sparc_fault ...

git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/ebiederm/user-namespace Pull per signal_struct coredumps from Eric Biederman: "Current coredumps are mixed up with the exit code, the signal handling code, and the ptrace code making coredumps much more complicated than necessary and difficult to follow. This series of changes starts with ptrace_stop and cleans it up, making it easier to follow what is happening in ptrace_stop. Then cleans up the exec interactions with coredumps. Then cleans up the coredump interactions with exit. Finally the coredump interactions with the signal handling code is cleaned up. The first and last changes are bug fixes for minor bugs. I believe the fact that vfork followed by execve can kill the process the called vfork if exec fails is sufficient justification to change the userspace visible behavior. In previous discussions some of these changes were organized differently and individually appeared to make the code base worse. As currently written I believe they all stand on their own as cleanups and bug fixes. Which means that even if the worst should happen and the last change needs to be reverted for some unimaginable reason, the code base will still be improved. If the worst does not happen there are a more cleanups that can be made. Signals that generate coredumps can easily become eligible for short circuit delivery in complete_signal. The entire rendezvous for generating a coredump can move into get_signal. The function force_sig_info_to_task be written in a way that does not modify the signal handling state of the target task (because coredumps are eligible for short circuit delivery). Many of these future cleanups can be done another way but nothing so cleanly as if coredumps become per signal_struct" * 'per_signal_struct_coredumps-for-v5.16' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/ebiederm/user-namespace: coredump: Limit coredumps to a single thread group coredump: Don't perform any cleanups before dumping core exit: Factor coredump_exit_mm out of exit_mm exec: Check for a pending fatal signal instead of core_state ptrace: Remove the unnecessary arguments from arch_ptrace_stop signal: Remove the bogus sigkill_pending in ptrace_stop

2021-10-29signal/sparc32: In setup_rt_frame and setup_fram use force_fatal_sigEric W. Biederman
Modify the 32bit version of setup_rt_frame and setup_frame to act similar to the 64bit version of setup_rt_frame and fail with a signal instead of calling do_exit. Replacing do_exit(SIGILL) with force_fatal_signal(SIGILL) ensures that the process will be terminated cleanly when the stack frame is invalid, instead of just killing off a single thread and leaving the process is a weird state. 2021-10-29signal/sparc32: Exit with a fatal signal when try_to_clear_window_buffer failsEric W. Biederman
The function try_to_clear_window_buffer is only called from rtrap_32.c. After it is called the signal pending state is retested, and signals are handled if TIF_SIGPENDING is set. This allows try_to_clear_window_buffer to call force_fatal_signal and then rely on the signal being delivered to kill the process, without any danger of returning to userspace, or otherwise using possible corrupt state on failure. The functional difference between force_fatal_sig and do_exit is that do_exit will only terminate a single thread, and will never trigger a core-dump. A multi-threaded program for which a single thread terminates unexpectedly is hard to reason about. Calling force_fatal_sig does not give userspace a chance to catch the signal, but otherwise is an ordinary fatal signal exit, and it will trigger a coredump of the offending process if core dumps are enabled. 2021-10-25signal/sparc: In setup_tsb_params convert open coded BUG into BUGEric W. Biederman
The function setup_tsb_params has exactly one caller tsb_grow. The function tsb_grow passes in a tsb_bytes value that is between 8192 and 1048576 inclusive, and is guaranteed to be a power of 2. The function setup_tsb_params verifies this property with a switch statement and then prints an error and causes the task to exit if this is not true. In practice that print statement can never be reached because tsb_grow never passes in a bad tsb_size. So if tsb_size ever gets a bad value that is a kernel bug. So replace the do_exit which is effectively an open coded version of BUG() with an actuall call to BUG(). Making it clearer that this is a case that can never, and should never happen. 2021-10-24kbuild: use more subdir- for visiting subdirectories while cleaningMasahiro Yamada
Documentation/kbuild/makefiles.rst suggests to use "archclean" for cleaning arch/$(SRCARCH)/boot/, but it is not a hard requirement. Since commit d92cc4d51643 ("kbuild: require all architectures to have arch/$(SRCARCH)/Kbuild"), we can use the "subdir- += boot" trick for all architectures. This can take advantage of the parallel option (-j) for "make clean". I also cleaned up the comments in arch/$(SRCARCH)/Makefile. The "archdep" target no longer exists. Use the generic dma remapping allocator instead of open coding it. This also avoids setting up page tables from irq context which is generally dangerous and uses the atomic pool instead.
