2024-02-09work around gcc bugs with 'asm goto' with outputsLinus Torvalds
We've had issues with gcc and 'asm goto' before, and we created a 'asm_volatile_goto()' macro for that in the past: see commits 3f0116c3238a ("compiler/gcc4: Add quirk for 'asm goto' miscompilation bug") and a9f180345f53 ("compiler/gcc4: Make quirk for asm_volatile_goto() unconditional"). Then, much later, we ended up removing the workaround in commit 43c249ea0b1e ("compiler-gcc.h: remove ancient workaround for gcc PR 58670") because we no longer supported building the kernel with the affected gcc versions, but we left the macro uses around. Now, Sean Christopherson reports a new version of a very similar problem, which is fixed by re-applying that ancient workaround. But the problem in question is limited to only the 'asm goto with outputs' cases, so instead of re-introducing the old workaround as-is, let's rename and limit the workaround to just that much less common case. It looks like there are at least two separate issues that all hit in this area: (a) some versions of gcc don't mark the asm goto as 'volatile' when it has outputs: https://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=98619 https://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=110420 which is easy to work around by just adding the 'volatile' by hand. (b) Internal compiler errors: https://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=110422 which are worked around by adding the extra empty 'asm' as a barrier, as in the original workaround. but the problem Sean sees may be a third thing since it involves bad code generation (not an ICE) even with the manually added 'volatile'. but the same old workaround works for this case, even if this feels a bit like voodoo programming and may only be hiding the issue. 2024-01-28um: Fix adding '-no-pie' for clangNathan Chancellor
The kernel builds with -fno-PIE, so commit 883354afbc10 ("um: link vmlinux with -no-pie") added the compiler linker flag '-no-pie' via cc-option because '-no-pie' was only supported in GCC 6.1.0 and newer. While this works for GCC, this does not work for clang because cc-option uses '-c', which stops the pipeline right before linking, so '-no-pie' is unconsumed and clang warns, causing cc-option to fail just as it would if the option was entirely unsupported: $ clang -Werror -no-pie -c -o /dev/null -x c /dev/null clang-16: error: argument unused during compilation: '-no-pie' [-Werror,-Wunused-command-line-argument] A recent version of clang exposes this because it generates a relocation under '-mcmodel=large' that is not supported in PIE mode: /usr/sbin/ld: init/main.o: relocation R_X86_64_32 against symbol `saved_command_line' can not be used when making a PIE object; recompile with -fPIE /usr/sbin/ld: failed to set dynamic section sizes: bad value clang: error: linker command failed with exit code 1 (use -v to see invocation) Remove the cc-option check altogether. It is wasteful to invoke the compiler to check for '-no-pie' because only one supported compiler version does not support it, GCC 5.x (as it is supported with the minimum version of clang and GCC 6.1.0+). Use a combination of the gcc-min-version macro and CONFIG_CC_IS_CLANG to unconditionally add '-no-pie' with CONFIG_LD_SCRIPT_DYN=y, so that it is enabled with all compilers that support this. Furthermore, using gcc-min-version can help turn this back into LINK-$(CONFIG_LD_SCRIPT_DYN) += -no-pie when the minimum version of GCC is bumped past 6.1.0. 2024-01-05um: Rely on PTRACE_SETREGSET to set FS/GS base registersBenjamin Berg
These registers are saved/restored together with the other general registers using ptrace. In arch_set_tls we then just need to set the register and it will be synced back normally. Most of this logic was introduced in commit f355559cf7845 ("[PATCH] uml: x86_64 thread fixes"). However, at least today we can rely on ptrace to restore the base registers for us. As such, only the part of the patch that tracks the FS register for use as thread local storage is actually needed. 2024-01-05um: time-travel: fix time corruptionJohannes Berg
In 'basic' time-travel mode (without =inf-cpu or =ext), we still get timer interrupts. These can happen at arbitrary points in time, i.e. while in timer_read(), which pushes time forward just a little bit. Then, if we happen to get the interrupt after calculating the new time to push to, but before actually finishing that, the interrupt will set the time to a value that's incompatible with the forward, and we'll crash because time goes backwards when we do the forwarding. Fix this by reading the time_travel_time, calculating the adjustment, and doing the adjustment all with interrupts disabled. 2024-01-05um: net: Fix return type of uml_net_start_xmit()Nathan Chancellor
With clang's kernel control flow integrity (kCFI, CONFIG_CFI_CLANG), indirect call targets are validated against the expected function pointer prototype to make sure the call target is valid to help mitigate ROP attacks. If they are not identical, there is a failure at run time, which manifests as either a kernel panic or thread getting killed. A warning in clang aims to catch these at compile time, which reveals: arch/um/drivers/net_kern.c:353:21: warning: incompatible function pointer types initializing 'netdev_tx_t (*)(struct sk_buff *, struct net_device *)' (aka 'enum netdev_tx (*)(struct sk_buff *, struct net_device *)') with an expression of type 'int (struct sk_buff *, struct net_device *)' [-Wincompatible-function-pointer-types-strict] 353 | .ndo_start_xmit = uml_net_start_xmit, | ^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1 warning generated. ->ndo_start_xmit() in 'struct net_device_ops' expects a return type of 'netdev_tx_t', not 'int'. Adjust the return type of uml_net_start_xmit() to match the prototype's to resolve the warning. While UML does not currently implement support for kCFI, it could in the future, which means this warning becomes a fatal CFI failure at run time. 2024-01-04um: Reap winch thread if it failsBenjamin Berg

2024-01-04um: Do not use printk in SIGWINCH helper threadBenjamin Berg

2024-01-04um: Don't use vfprintf() for os_info()Benjamin Berg
The threads allocated inside the kernel have only a single page of stack. Unfortunately, the vfprintf function in standard glibc may use too much stack-space, overflowing it. 2023-09-29um,ethertap: Replace deprecated strncpy() with strscpy()Justin Stitt
`strncpy` is deprecated for use on NUL-terminated destination strings [1]. `gate_buf` should always be NUL-terminated and does not require NUL-padding. It is used as a string arg inside an argv array given to `run_helper()`. Due to this, let's use `strscpy` as it guarantees NUL-terminated on the destination buffer preventing potential buffer overreads [2]. This exact invocation was changed from `strcpy` to `strncpy` in commit 7879b1d94badb ("um,ethertap: use strncpy") back in 2015. Let's continue hardening our `str*cpy` apis and use the newer and safer `strscpy`! CET consists of two related security features: shadow stacks and indirect branch tracking. This series implements just the shadow stack part of this feature, and just for userspace. The main use case for shadow stack is providing protection against return oriented programming attacks. It works by maintaining a secondary (shadow) stack using a special memory type that has protections against modification. When executing a CALL instruction, the processor pushes the return address to both the normal stack and to the special permission shadow stack. Upon RET, the processor pops the shadow stack copy and compares it to the normal stack copy. 2023-08-26um: vector: refactor deprecated strncpyJustin Stitt
`strncpy` is deprecated for use on NUL-terminated destination strings [1]. A suitable replacement is `strscpy` [2] due to the fact that it guarantees NUL-termination on its destination buffer argument which is _not_ the case for `strncpy`! In this case, we are able to drop the now superfluous `... - 1` instances because `strscpy` will automatically truncate the last byte by setting it to a NUL byte if the source size exceeds the destination size or if the source string is not NUL-terminated. I've also opted to remove the seemingly useless char* casts. I'm not sure why they're present at all since (after expanding the `ifr_name` macro) `ifr.ifr_ifrn.ifrn_name` is a char* already. All in all, `strscpy` is a more robust and less ambiguous interface while also letting us remove some `... -1`'s which cleans things up a bit. strlcpy() reads the entire source buffer first. This read may exceed the destination size limit. This is both inefficient and can lead to linear read overflows if a source string is not NUL-terminated [1]. In an effort to remove strlcpy() completely [2], replace strlcpy() here with strscpy(). No return values were used, so direct replacement is safe. Get rid of it mechanically: git grep -l CONFIG_AUTOFS4_FS -- '*defconfig' | xargs sed -i 's/AUTOFS4_FS/AUTOFS_FS/' Also just remove the AUTOFS4_FS config option stub. This reverts commit 9b0da3f22307af693be80f5d3a89dc4c7f360a85. The sigio.c is clearly user space code which is handled by arch/um/scripts/Makefile.rules (see USER_OBJS rule). The above mentioned commit simply broke this agreement, we may not use Linux kernel internal headers in them without thorough thinking. Hence, revert the wrong commit. 2023-07-27um: Remove strlcpy declarationAzeem Shaikh
strlcpy() reads the entire source buffer first. This read may exceed the destination size limit. This is both inefficient and can lead to linear read overflows if a source string is not NUL-terminated [1]. In an effort to remove strlcpy() completely [2], replace strlcpy() here with strscpy(). No return values were used, so direct replacement is safe. 2023-07-11mm: Rename arch pte_mkwrite()'s to pte_mkwrite_novma()Rick Edgecombe
The x86 Shadow stack feature includes a new type of memory called shadow stack. This shadow stack memory has some unusual properties, which requires some core mm changes to function properly. One of these unusual properties is that shadow stack memory is writable, but only in limited ways. These limits are applied via a specific PTE bit combination. Nevertheless, the memory is writable, and core mm code will need to apply the writable permissions in the typical paths that call pte_mkwrite(). The goal is to make pte_mkwrite() take a VMA, so that the x86 implementation of it can know whether to create regular writable or shadow stack mappings. But there are a couple of challenges to this. Modifying the signatures of each arch pte_mkwrite() implementation would be error prone because some are generated with macros and would need to be re-implemented. Also, some pte_mkwrite() callers operate on kernel memory without a VMA. So this can be done in a three step process. First pte_mkwrite() can be renamed to pte_mkwrite_novma() in each arch, with a generic pte_mkwrite() added that just calls pte_mkwrite_novma(). Next callers without a VMA can be moved to pte_mkwrite_novma(). And lastly, pte_mkwrite() and all callers can be changed to take/pass a VMA. Start the process by renaming pte_mkwrite() to pte_mkwrite_novma() and adding the pte_mkwrite() wrapper in linux/pgtable.h. Apply the same pattern for pmd_mkwrite(). Since not all archs have a pmd_mkwrite_novma(), create a new arch config HAS_HUGE_PAGE that can be used to tell if pmd_mkwrite() should be defined. Otherwise in the !HAS_HUGE_PAGE cases the compiler would not be able to find pmd_mkwrite_novma(). No functional change.
