2017-02-22arch, mm: remove arch specific show_memMichal Hocko
We have a generic implementation for quite some time already. If there is any arch specific information to be printed then we should add a callback called from the generic code rather than duplicate the whole show_mem. The current code has resulted in the code duplication and the output divergence which is both confusing and adds maintainance costs. Let's just get rid of this mess. This file was only including module.h for exception table related functions. 2016-08-04dma-mapping: use unsigned long for dma_attrsKrzysztof Kozlowski
The dma-mapping core and the implementations do not change the DMA attributes passed by pointer. Thus the pointer can point to const data. However the attributes do not have to be a bitfield. Instead unsigned long will do fine: 1. This is just simpler. Both in terms of reading the code and setting attributes. Instead of initializing local attributes on the stack and passing pointer to it to dma_set_attr(), just set the bits. 2. It brings safeness and checking for const correctness because the attributes are passed by value. Semantic patches for this change (at least most of them): virtual patch virtual context @r@ identifier f, attrs; @@ f(..., - struct dma_attrs *attrs + unsigned long attrs , ...) { ... } @@ identifier r.f; @@ f(..., - NULL + 0 ) and // Options: --all-includes virtual patch virtual context @r@ identifier f, attrs; type t; @@ t f(..., struct dma_attrs *attrs); @@ identifier r.f; @@ f(..., - NULL + 0 ) Link: http://lkml.kernel.org/r/1468399300-5399-2-git-send-email-k.kozlowski@samsung.com Signed-off-by: Krzysztof Kozlowski <k.kozlowski@samsung.com> Acked-by: Vineet Gupta <vgupta@synopsys.com> Acked-by: Robin Murphy <robin.murphy@arm.com> Acked-by: Hans-Christian Noren Egtvedt <egtvedt@samfundet.no> Acked-by: Mark Salter <msalter@redhat.com> [c6x] Acked-by: Jesper Nilsson <jesper.nilsson@axis.com> [cris] Acked-by: Daniel Vetter <daniel.vetter@ffwll.ch> [drm] Reviewed-by: Bart Van Assche <bart.vanassche@sandisk.com> Acked-by: Joerg Roedel <jroedel@suse.de> [iommu] Acked-by: Fabien Dessenne <fabien.dessenne@st.com> [bdisp] Reviewed-by: Marek Szyprowski <m.szyprowski@samsung.com> [vb2-core] Acked-by: David Vrabel <david.vrabel@citrix.com> [xen] Acked-by: Konrad Rzeszutek Wilk <konrad.wilk@oracle.com> [xen swiotlb] Acked-by: Joerg Roedel <jroedel@suse.de> [iommu] Acked-by: Richard Kuo <rkuo@codeaurora.org> [hexagon] Acked-by: Geert Uytterhoeven <geert@linux-m68k.org> [m68k] Acked-by: Gerald Schaefer <gerald.schaefer@de.ibm.com> [s390] Acked-by: Bjorn Andersson <bjorn.andersson@linaro.org> Acked-by: Hans-Christian Noren Egtvedt <egtvedt@samfundet.no> [avr32] Acked-by: Vineet Gupta <vgupta@synopsys.com> [arc] Acked-by: Robin Murphy <robin.murphy@arm.com> [arm64 and dma-iommu] Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@linux-foundation.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>

2016-03-17mm: cleanup *pte_alloc* interfacesKirill A. Shutemov
There are few things about *pte_alloc*() helpers worth cleaning up: - 'vma' argument is unused, let's drop it; - most __pte_alloc() callers do speculative check for pmd_none(), before taking ptl: let's introduce pte_alloc() macro which does the check. The only direct user of __pte_alloc left is userfaultfd, which has different expectation about atomicity wrt pmd. - pte_alloc_map() and pte_alloc_map_lock() are redefined using pte_alloc(). 2015-05-19mm/fault, arch: Use pagefault_disable() to check for disabled pagefaults in ↵David Hildenbrand
the handler Introduce faulthandler_disabled() and use it to check for irq context and disabled pagefaults (via pagefault_disable()) in the pagefault handlers. Please note that we keep the in_atomic() checks in place - to detect whether in irq context (in which case preemption is always properly disabled). In contrast, preempt_disable() should never be used to disable pagefaults. With !CONFIG_PREEMPT_COUNT, preempt_disable() doesn't modify the preempt counter, and therefore the result of in_atomic() differs. We validate that condition by using might_fault() checks when calling might_sleep(). Therefore, add a comment to faulthandler_disabled(), describing why this is needed. faulthandler_disabled() and pagefault_disable() are defined in linux/uaccess.h, so let's properly add that include to all relevant files. This patch is based on a patch from Thomas Gleixner. 2015-02-11mm: fix false-positive warning on exit due mm_nr_pmds(mm)Kirill A. Shutemov
The problem is that we check nr_ptes/nr_pmds in exit_mmap() which happens *before* pgd_free(). And if an arch does pte/pmd allocation in pgd_alloc() and frees them in pgd_free() we see offset in counters by the time of the checks. We tried to workaround this by offsetting expected counter value according to FIRST_USER_ADDRESS for both nr_pte and nr_pmd in exit_mmap(). But it doesn't work in some cases: 1. ARM with LPAE enabled also has non-zero USER_PGTABLES_CEILING, but upper addresses occupied with huge pmd entries, so the trick with offsetting expected counter value will get really ugly: we will have to apply it nr_pmds, but not nr_ptes. 2. Metag has non-zero FIRST_USER_ADDRESS, but doesn't do allocation pte/pmd page tables allocation in pgd_alloc(), just setup a pgd entry which is allocated at boot and shared accross all processes. The proposal is to move the check to check_mm() which happens *after* pgd_free() and do proper accounting during pgd_alloc() and pgd_free() which would bring counters to zero if nothing leaked. 2014-01-21mm, show_mem: remove SHOW_MEM_FILTER_PAGE_COUNTMel Gorman
Commit 4b59e6c47309 ("mm, show_mem: suppress page counts in non-blockable contexts") introduced SHOW_MEM_FILTER_PAGE_COUNT to suppress PFN walks on large memory machines. Commit c78e93630d15 ("mm: do not walk all of system memory during show_mem") avoided a PFN walk in the generic show_mem helper which removes the requirement for SHOW_MEM_FILTER_PAGE_COUNT in that case. This patch removes PFN walkers from the arch-specific implementations that report on a per-node or per-zone granularity. ARM and unicore32 still do a PFN walk as they report memory usage on each bank which is a much finer granularity where the debugging information may still be of use. As the remaining arches doing PFN walks have relatively small amounts of memory, this patch simply removes SHOW_MEM_FILTER_PAGE_COUNT. 2013-04-29mm, vmalloc: change iterating a vmlist to find_vm_area()Joonsoo Kim
This patchset removes vm_struct list management after initializing vmalloc. Adding and removing an entry to vmlist is linear time complexity, so it is inefficient. If we maintain this list, overall time complexity of adding and removing area to vmalloc space is O(N), although we use rbtree for finding vacant place and it's time complexity is just O(logN). And vmlist and vmlist_lock is used many places of outside of vmalloc.c. It is preferable that we hide this raw data structure and provide well-defined function for supporting them, because it makes that they cannot mistake when manipulating theses structure and it makes us easily maintain vmalloc layer. For kexec and makedumpfile, I export vmap_area_list, instead of vmlist. This comes from Atsushi's recommendation. For more information, please refer below link. https://lkml.org/lkml/2012/12/6/184 This patch: The purpose of iterating a vmlist is finding vm area with specific virtual address. find_vm_area() is provided for this purpose and more efficient, because it uses a rbtree. 2013-04-29mm, show_mem: suppress page counts in non-blockable contextsDavid Rientjes
On large systems with a lot of memory, walking all RAM to determine page types may take a half second or even more. In non-blockable contexts, the page allocator will emit a page allocation failure warning unless __GFP_NOWARN is specified. In such contexts, irqs are typically disabled and such a lengthy delay may even result in NMI watchdog timeouts. To fix this, suppress the page walk in such contexts when printing the page allocation failure warning. 2012-04-04Merge branch 'for-linus' of ↵Linus Torvalds
git://git.linaro.org/people/mszyprowski/linux-dma-mapping Pull DMA mapping branch from Marek Szyprowski: "Short summary for the whole series: A few limitations have been identified in the current dma-mapping design and its implementations for various architectures. There exist more than one function for allocating and freeing the buffers: currently these 3 are used dma_{alloc, free}_coherent, dma_{alloc,free}_writecombine, dma_{alloc,free}_noncoherent. For most of the systems these calls are almost equivalent and can be interchanged. For others, especially the truly non-coherent ones (like ARM), the difference can be easily noticed in overall driver performance. Sadly not all architectures provide implementations for all of them, so the drivers might need to be adapted and cannot be easily shared between different architectures. The provided patches unify all these functions and hide the differences under the already existing dma attributes concept. The thread with more references is available here: http://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-sh/msg09777.html These patches are also a prerequisite for unifying DMA-mapping implementation on ARM architecture with the common one provided by dma_map_ops structure and extending it with IOMMU support. More information is available in the following thread: http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.linux.kernel.cross-arch/12819 More works on dma-mapping framework are planned, especially in the area of buffer sharing and managing the shared mappings (together with the recently introduced dma_buf interface: commit d15bd7ee445d "dma-buf: Introduce dma buffer sharing mechanism"). The patches in the current set introduce a new alloc/free methods (with support for memory attributes) in dma_map_ops structure, which will later replace dma_alloc_coherent and dma_alloc_writecombine functions." People finally started piping up with support for merging this, so I'm merging it as the last of the pending stuff from the merge window. 2011-12-08memblock: Kill memblock_init()Tejun Heo
memblock_init() initializes arrays for regions and memblock itself; however, all these can be done with struct initializers and memblock_init() can be removed. This patch kills memblock_init() and initializes memblock with struct initializer. The only difference is that the first dummy entries don't have .nid set to MAX_NUMNODES initially. 2011-12-08memblock: Fix include breakages caused by 24aa07882bTejun Heo
24aa07882b (memblock, x86: Replace memblock_x86_reserve/free_range() with generic ones) removed arch/x86/include/asm/memblock.h and dropped its inclusion from include/linux/memblock.h which breaks other architectures which depended on the generic memblock.h pulling in the arch specific one. However, the proper fix isn't adding back the asm inclusion. memblock doesn't have any arch dependent part and doesn't need arch specific header file and asm/memblock.h files are either practically empty or contain mostly unrelated arch specific stuff. * In microblaze, sh, powerpc, sparc and openrisc, asm/memblock.h is either empty or just contains unused MEMBLOCK_DBG() macro. Remove them. * In arm and unicore32, asm/memblock.h contains arch specific stuff. Include it directly from its users. It might be a good idea to rename the header file to avoid confusion. 2011-05-25arch, mm: filter disallowed nodes from arch specific show_mem functionsDavid Rientjes
Architectures that implement their own show_mem() function did not pass the filter argument to show_free_areas() to appropriately avoid emitting the state of nodes that are disallowed in the current context. This patch now passes the filter argument to show_free_areas() so those nodes are now avoided. This patch also removes the show_free_areas() wrapper around __show_free_areas() and converts existing callers to pass an empty filter. ia64 emits additional information for each node, so skip_free_areas_zone() must be made global to filter disallowed nodes and it is converted to use a nid argument rather than a zone for this use case. Commit ddd588b5dd55 ("oom: suppress nodes that are not allowed from meminfo on oom kill") moved lib/show_mem.o out of lib/lib.a, which resulted in build warnings on all architectures that implement their own versions of show_mem(): lib/lib.a(show_mem.o): In function `show_mem': show_mem.c:(.text+0x1f4): multiple definition of `show_mem' arch/sparc/mm/built-in.o:(.text+0xd70): first defined here The fix is to remove __show_mem() and add its argument to show_mem() in all implementations to prevent this breakage. Architectures that implement their own show_mem() actually don't do anything with the argument yet, but they could be made to filter nodes that aren't allowed in the current context in the future just like the generic implementation.
