2019-10-15x86/apic/x2apic: Fix a NULL pointer deref when handling a dying cpuSean Christopherson
Check that the per-cpu cluster mask pointer has been set prior to clearing a dying cpu's bit. The per-cpu pointer is not set until the target cpu reaches smp_callin() during CPUHP_BRINGUP_CPU, whereas the teardown function, x2apic_dead_cpu(), is associated with the earlier CPUHP_X2APIC_PREPARE. 2018-05-17x86/apic/x2apic: Initialize cluster ID properlyThomas Gleixner
Rick bisected a regression on large systems which use the x2apic cluster mode for interrupt delivery to the commit wich reworked the cluster management. The problem is caused by a missing initialization of the clusterid field in the shared cluster data structures. So all structures end up with cluster ID 0 which only allows sharing between all CPUs which belong to cluster 0. All other CPUs with a cluster ID > 0 cannot share the data structure because they cannot find existing data with their cluster ID. This causes malfunction with IPIs because IPIs are sent to the wrong cluster and the caller waits for ever that the target CPU handles the IPI. Add the missing initialization when a upcoming CPU is the first in a cluster so that the later booting CPUs can find the data and share it for proper operation. 2017-12-29x86/apic: Switch all APICs to Fixed delivery modeThomas Gleixner
Some of the APIC incarnations are operating in lowest priority delivery mode. This worked as long as the vector management code allocated the same vector on all possible CPUs for each interrupt. Lowest priority delivery mode does not necessarily respect the affinity setting and may redirect to some other online CPU. This was documented somewhere in the old code and the conversion to single target delivery missed to update the delivery mode of the affected APIC drivers which results in spurious interrupts on some of the affected CPU/Chipset combinations. Switch the APIC drivers over to Fixed delivery mode and remove all leftovers of lowest priority delivery mode. Switching to Fixed delivery mode is not a problem on these CPUs because the kernel already uses Fixed delivery mode for IPIs. The reason for this is that th SDM explicitely forbids lowest prio mode for IPIs. The reason is obvious: If the irq routing does not honor destination targets in lowest prio mode then an IPI targeted at CPU1 might end up on CPU0, which would be a fatal problem in many cases. As a consequence of this change, the apic::irq_delivery_mode field is now pointless, but this needs to be cleaned up in a separate patch. 2017-11-02License cleanup: add SPDX GPL-2.0 license identifier to files with no licenseGreg Kroah-Hartman
Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license. By default all files without license information are under the default license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2. Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0' SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text. This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and Philippe Ombredanne. How this work was done: Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of the use cases: - file had no licensing information it it. - file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it, - file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information, Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords. The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files. The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s) to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was: - Files considered eligible had to be source code files. - Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5 lines of source - File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5 lines). All documentation files were explicitly excluded. The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license identifiers to apply. - when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was considered to have no license information in it, and the top level COPYING file license applied. For non */uapi/* files that summary was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 11139 and resulted in the first patch in this series. If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". Results of that was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 930 and resulted in the second patch in this series. - if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in it (per prior point). Results summary: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------ GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 270 GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 169 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-2-Clause) 21 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 17 LGPL-2.1+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 15 GPL-1.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 14 ((GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 5 LGPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 4 LGPL-2.1 WITH Linux-syscall-note 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR MIT) 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) AND MIT) 1 and that resulted in the third patch in this series. - when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became the concluded license(s). - when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a license but the other didn't, or they both detected different licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred. - In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics). - When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. - If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier, the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later in time. In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so they are related. Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks in about 15000 files. In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the correct identifier. Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch version early this week with: - a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected license ids and scores - reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+ files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct - reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the different types of files to be modified. These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to generate the patches. x2apic_dead_cpu() cleans up the leftovers of a CPU which got unplugged, but instead of clearing the dead cpu bit in the cluster mask it clears the current (alive) cpu bit. Noticed because smp_processor_id() is called in preemptible code and triggers a debug warning. The target_cpus() callback of the apic struct is not really useful. Some APICs return cpu_online_mask and others cpus_all_mask. The latter is bogus as it does not take holes in the cpus_possible_mask into account. Replace it with cpus_online_mask which makes the most sense and remove the callback. The usage sites will be removed in a later step anyway, so get rid of it now to have incremental changes. 2017-09-25x86/apic/x2apic: Simplify cluster managementThomas Gleixner
The cluster management code creates a cluster mask per cpu, which requires that on cpu on/offline all cluster masks have to be iterated and updated. Other information about the cluster is in different per cpu variables. Create a data structure which holds all information about a cluster and fill it in when the first CPU of a cluster comes online. If another CPU of a cluster comes online it just finds the pointer to the existing cluster structure and reuses it. That simplifies all usage sites and gets rid of quite some pointless iterations over the online cpus to find the cpus which belong to the cluster. The script basically converted the state constant to a string, but the cleanup to convert these strings into meaningful ones did not happen. I made a mistake while converting the driver to the hotplug state machine and as a result x2apic_cluster_probe() was accessing cpus_in_cluster before allocating it. This patch fixes it by setting the cpumask after the allocation the memory succeeded. While at it, I marked two functions static which are only used within this file. __get_cpu_var can paper over differences in the definitions of cpumask_var_t and either use the address of the cpumask variable directly or perform a fetch of the address of the struct cpumask allocated elsewhere. This is important particularly when using per cpu cpumask_var_t declarations because in one case we have an offset into a per cpu area to handle and in the other case we need to fetch a pointer from the offset. This patch introduces a new macro this_cpu_cpumask_var_ptr() that is defined where cpumask_var_t is defined and performs the proper actions. All use cases where __get_cpu_var is used with cpumask_var_t are converted to the use of this_cpu_cpumask_var_ptr(). The __cpuinit type of throwaway sections might have made sense some time ago when RAM was more constrained, but now the savings do not offset the cost and complications. For example, the fix in commit 5e427ec2d0 ("x86: Fix bit corruption at CPU resume time") is a good example of the nasty type of bugs that can be created with improper use of the various __init prefixes. After a discussion on LKML[1] it was decided that cpuinit should go the way of devinit and be phased out. Once all the users are gone, we can then finally remove the macros themselves from linux/init.h. Note that some harmless section mismatch warnings may result, since notify_cpu_starting() and cpu_up() are arch independent (kernel/cpu.c) are flagged as __cpuinit -- so if we remove the __cpuinit from arch specific callers, we will also get section mismatch warnings. As an intermediate step, we intend to turn the linux/init.h cpuinit content into no-ops as early as possible, since that will get rid of these warnings. In any case, they are temporary and harmless. This removes all the arch/x86 uses of the __cpuinit macros from all C files. x86 only had the one __CPUINIT used in assembly files, and it wasn't paired off with a .previous or a __FINIT, so we can delete it directly w/o any corresponding additional change there. with the explicit affinity During boot or driver load etc, interrupt destination is setup using default target cpu's. Later the user (irqbalance etc) or the driver (irq_set_affinity/ irq_set_affinity_hint) can request the interrupt to be migrated to some specific set of cpu's. In the x2apic cluster routing, for the default scenario use single cpu as the interrupt destination and when there is an explicit interrupt affinity request, route the interrupt to multiple members of a x2apic cluster specified in the cpumask of the migration request. This will minmize the vector pressure when there are lot of interrupt sources and relatively few x2apic clusters (for example a single socket server). This will allow the performance critical interrupts to be routed to multiple cpu's in the x2apic cluster (irqbalance for example uses the cache siblings etc while specifying the interrupt destination) and allow non-critical interrupts to be serviced by a single logical cpu. For the x2apic cluster mode, vector for an interrupt is currently reserved on all the cpu's that are part of the x2apic cluster. But the interrupts will be routed only to the cluster (derived from the first cpu in the mask) members specified in the mask. So there is no need to reserve the vector in the unused cluster members. Modify __assign_irq_vector() to reserve the vectors based on the user specified irq destination mask. If the new mask is a proper subset of the currently used mask, cleanup the vector allocation on the unused cpu members. Also, allow the apic driver to tune the vector domain based on the affinity mask (which in most cases is the user-specified mask). membership Currently __assign_irq_vector() goes through each cpu in the specified mask until it finds a free vector in all the cpu's that are part of the same interrupt domain. We visit all the interrupt domain sibling cpus to reserve the free vector. So, when we fail to find a free vector in an interrupt domain, it is safe to continue our search with a cpu belonging to a new interrupt domain. No need to go through each cpu, if the domain containing that cpu is already visited. Use the irq_cfg's old_domain to track the visited domains and optimize the cpu traversal while finding a free vector in the given cpumask. NOTE: We can also optimize the search by using for_each_cpu() and skip the current cpu, if it is not the first cpu in the mask returned by the vector_allocation_domain(). But re-using the cfg->old_domain to track the visited domains will be slightly faster.
