2018-12-03pstore: Map PSTORE_TYPE_* to stringsJoel Fernandes (Google)
In later patches we will need to map types to names, so create a constant table for that which can also be used in different parts of old and new code. This saves the type in the PRZ which will be useful in later patches. Instead of having an explicit PSTORE_TYPE_UNKNOWN, just use ..._MAX. This includes removing the now redundant filename templates which can use a single format string. Also, there's no reason to limit the "is it still compressed?" test to only PSTORE_TYPE_DMESG when building the pstorefs filename. Records are zero-initialized, so a backend would need to have explicitly set compressed=1. 2018-06-12treewide: kvmalloc() -> kvmalloc_array()Kees Cook
The kvmalloc() function has a 2-factor argument form, kvmalloc_array(). This patch replaces cases of: kvmalloc(a * b, gfp) with: kvmalloc_array(a * b, gfp) as well as handling cases of: kvmalloc(a * b * c, gfp) with: kvmalloc(array3_size(a, b, c), gfp) as it's slightly less ugly than: kvmalloc_array(array_size(a, b), c, gfp) This does, however, attempt to ignore constant size factors like: kvmalloc(4 * 1024, gfp) though any constants defined via macros get caught up in the conversion. Any factors with a sizeof() of "unsigned char", "char", and "u8" were dropped, since they're redundant. 2017-12-18ACPI: APEI / ERST: Fix missing error handling in erst_reader()Takashi Iwai
The commit f6f828513290 ("pstore: pass allocated memory region back to caller") changed the check of the return value from erst_read() in erst_reader() in the following way: if (len == -ENOENT) goto skip; - else if (len < 0) { - rc = -1; + else if (len < sizeof(*rcd)) { + rc = -EIO; goto out; This introduced another bug: since the comparison with sizeof() is cast to unsigned, a negative len value doesn't hit any longer. As a result, when an error is returned from erst_read(), the code falls through, and it may eventually lead to some weird thing like memory corruption. This patch adds the negative error value check more explicitly for addressing the issue. 2017-11-09APEI / ERST: use 64-bit timestampsArnd Bergmann
32-bit timestamps are deprecated in the kernel, so we should not use get_seconds(). In this case, the 'struct cper_record_header' structure already contains a 64-bit field, so the only required change is to use the safe ktime_get_real_seconds() interface as a replacement. 2017-05-08treewide: use kv[mz]alloc* rather than opencoded variantsMichal Hocko
There are many code paths opencoding kvmalloc. Let's use the helper instead. The main difference to kvmalloc is that those users are usually not considering all the aspects of the memory allocator. E.g. allocation requests <= 32kB (with 4kB pages) are basically never failing and invoke OOM killer to satisfy the allocation. This sounds too disruptive for something that has a reasonable fallback - the vmalloc. On the other hand those requests might fallback to vmalloc even when the memory allocator would succeed after several more reclaim/compaction attempts previously. There is no guarantee something like that happens though. This patch converts many of those places to kv[mz]alloc* helpers because they are more conservative. 2016-06-02pstore: add lzo/lz4 compression supportGeliang Tang
Like zlib compression in pstore, this patch added lzo and lz4 compression support so that users can have more options and better compression ratio. The original code treats the compressed data together with the uncompressed ECC correction notice by using zlib decompress. The ECC correction notice is missing in the decompression process. The treatment also makes lzo and lz4 not working. So I treat them separately by using pstore_decompress() to treat the compressed data, and memcpy() to treat the uncompressed ECC correction notice. In addition to the usual bug fixes and small updates, the main highlights are: - Support for transparent huge pages by Aneesh Kumar for 64-bit server processors. This allows the use of 16M pages as transparent huge pages on kernels compiled with a 64K base page size. - Base VFIO support for KVM on power by Alexey Kardashevskiy - Wiring up of our nvram to the pstore infrastructure, including putting compressed oopses in there by Aruna Balakrishnaiah - Move, rework and improve our "EEH" (basically PCI error handling and recovery) infrastructure. It is no longer specific to pseries but is now usable by the new "powernv" platform as well (no hypervisor) by Gavin Shan. - I fixed some bugs in our math-emu instruction decoding and made it usable to emulate some optional FP instructions on processors with hard FP that lack them (such as fsqrt on Freescale embedded processors). - Support for Power8 "Event Based Branch" facility by Michael Ellerman. This facility allows what is basically "userspace interrupts" for performance monitor events. - A bunch of Transactional Memory vs. Signals bug fixes and HW breakpoint/watchpoint fixes by Michael Neuling. And more ... 2013-06-28acpi: Eliminate console msg if pstore.backend excludes ERSTLenny Szubowicz
This is patch 2/3 of a patch set that avoids what misleadingly appears to be a error during boot: ERST: Could not register with persistent store This message is displayed if the system has a valid ACPI ERST table and the pstore.backend kernel parameter has been used to disable use of ERST by pstore. But this same message is used for errors that preclude registration. In erst_init don't complain if the setting of kernel parameter pstore.backend precludes use of ACPI ERST for pstore. Routine pstore_register will inform about the facility that does register. Also, don't leave a dangling pointer to deallocated mem for the pstore buffer when registration fails. 2012-11-26efi_pstore: Add a sequence counter to a variable nameSeiji Aguchi
[Issue] Currently, a variable name, which identifies each entry, consists of type, id and ctime. But if multiple events happens in a short time, a second/third event may fail to log because efi_pstore can't distinguish each event with current variable name. [Solution] A reasonable way to identify all events precisely is introducing a sequence counter to the variable name. The sequence counter has already supported in a pstore layer with "oopscount". So, this patch adds it to a variable name. Also, it is passed to read/erase callbacks of platform drivers in accordance with the modification of the variable name. <before applying this patch> a variable name of first event: dump-type0-1-12345678 a variable name of second event: dump-type0-1-12345678 type:0 id:1 ctime:12345678 If multiple events happen in a short time, efi_pstore can't distinguish them because variable names are same among them. <after applying this patch> it can be distinguishable by adding a sequence counter as follows. a variable name of first event: dump-type0-1-1-12345678 a variable name of Second event: dump-type0-1-2-12345678 type:0 id:1 sequence counter: 1(first event), 2(second event) ctime:12345678 In case of a write callback executed in pstore_console_write(), "0" is added to an argument of the write callback because it just logs all kernel messages and doesn't need to care about multiple events. 2012-11-26efi_pstore: Add ctime to argument of erase callbackSeiji Aguchi
[Issue] Currently, a variable name, which is used to identify each log entry, consists of type, id and ctime. But an erase callback does not use ctime. If efi_pstore supported just one log, type and id were enough. However, in case of supporting multiple logs, it doesn't work because it can't distinguish each entry without ctime at erasing time. <Example> As you can see below, efi_pstore can't differentiate first event from second one without ctime. a variable name of first event: dump-type0-1-12345678 a variable name of second event: dump-type0-1-23456789 type:0 id:1 ctime:12345678, 23456789 [Solution] This patch adds ctime to an argument of an erase callback. It works across reboots because ctime of pstore means the date that the record was originally stored. To do this, efi_pstore saves the ctime to variable name at writing time and passes it to pstore at reading time. 2011-11-17pstore: pass reason to backend write callbackKees Cook
This allows a backend to filter on the dmesg reason as well as the pstore reason. When ramoops is switched to pstore, this is needed since it has no interest in storing non-crash dmesg details. Drop pstore_write() as it has no users, and handling the "reason" here has no obviously correct value. Signed-off-by: Kees Cook <keescook@chromium.org> Signed-off-by: Tony Luck <tony.luck@intel.com>
2011-11-17pstore: pass allocated memory region back to callerKees Cook
The buf_lock cannot be held while populating the inodes, so make the backend pass forward an allocated and filled buffer instead. This solves the following backtrace. The effect is that "buf" is only ever used to notify the backends that something was written to it, and shouldn't be used in the read path. To replace the buf_lock during the read path, isolate the open/read/close loop with a separate mutex to maintain serialized access to the backend. Note that is is up to the pstore backend to cope if the (*write)() path is called in the middle of the read path. 2011-10-12pstore: make pstore write function return normal success/fail valueChen Gong

2011-08-16pstore: change mutex locking to spin_locksDon Zickus
pstore was using mutex locking to protect read/write access to the backend plug-ins. This causes problems when pstore is executed in an NMI context through panic() -> kmsg_dump(). This patch changes the mutex to a spin_lock_irqsave then also checks to see if we are in an NMI context. If we are in an NMI and can't get the lock, just print a message stating that and blow by the locking. All this is probably a hack around the bigger locking problem but it solves my current situation of trying to sleep in an NMI context. Tested by loading the lkdtm module and executing a HARDLOCKUP which will cause the machine to panic inside the nmi handler. 2011-05-16pstore: fix one type of return value in pstoreChen Gong
the return type of function _read_ in pstore is size_t, but in the callback function of _read_, the logic doesn't consider it too much, which means if negative value (assuming error here) is returned, it will be converted to positive because of type casting. ssize_t is enough for this function. 2011-03-21ACPI, APEI, Add ERST record ID cacheHuang Ying
APEI ERST firmware interface and implementation has no multiple users in mind. For example, if there is four records in storage with ID: 1, 2, 3 and 4, if two ERST readers enumerate the records via GET_NEXT_RECORD_ID as follow, reader 1 reader 2 1 2 3 4 -1 -1 where -1 signals there is no more record ID. Reader 1 has no chance to check record 2 and 4, while reader 2 has no chance to check record 1 and 3. And any other GET_NEXT_RECORD_ID will return -1, that is, other readers will has no chance to check any record even they are not cleared by anyone. This makes raw GET_NEXT_RECORD_ID not suitable for used by multiple users. To solve the issue, an in-memory ERST record ID cache is designed and implemented. When enumerating record ID, the ID returned by GET_NEXT_RECORD_ID is added into cache in addition to be returned to caller. So other readers can check the cache to get all record ID available.
