2018-11-09sx8: use a per-host tag_setChristoph Hellwig
The current sx8 code spends a lot of effort dealing with the fact that tags are per-host, but there might be multiple queues. Now that the driver has been converted to blk-mq it can take care of the blk-mq tag_set concept that has been designed just for that. 2017-06-09block: introduce new block status code typeChristoph Hellwig
Currently we use nornal Linux errno values in the block layer, and while we accept any error a few have overloaded magic meanings. This patch instead introduces a new blk_status_t value that holds block layer specific status codes and explicitly explains their meaning. Helpers to convert from and to the previous special meanings are provided for now, but I suspect we want to get rid of them in the long run - those drivers that have a errno input (e.g. networking) usually get errnos that don't know about the special block layer overloads, and similarly returning them to userspace will usually return somethings that strictly speaking isn't correct for file system operations, but that's left as an exercise for later. For now the set of errors is a very limited set that closely corresponds to the previous overloaded errno values, but there is some low hanging fruite to improve it. blk_status_t (ab)uses the sparse __bitwise annotations to allow for sparse typechecking, so that we can easily catch places passing the wrong values. 2017-01-31block: fold cmd_type into the REQ_OP_ spaceChristoph Hellwig
Instead of keeping two levels of indirection for requests types, fold it all into the operations. The little caveat here is that previously cmd_type only applied to struct request, while the request and bio op fields were set to plain REQ_OP_READ/WRITE even for passthrough operations. Instead this patch adds new REQ_OP_* for SCSI passthrough and driver private requests, althought it has to add two for each so that we can communicate the data in/out nature of the request. 2015-12-23sx8: use real time for the command secondsJens Axboe

32-bit systems using 'struct timeval' will break in the year 2038, in order to avoid that replace the code with more appropriate types. This patch replaces timeval with 64 bit ktime_t which is y2038 safe. Since st->timestamp is only interested in seconds, directly using time64_t here. Function ktime_get_seconds is used since it uses monotonic instead of real time and thus will not cause overflow. 2014-08-28block,scsi: fixup blk_get_request dead queue scenariosJoe Lawrence
The blk_get_request function may fail in low-memory conditions or during device removal (even if __GFP_WAIT is set). To distinguish between these errors, modify the blk_get_request call stack to return the appropriate ERR_PTR. Verify that all callers check the return status and consider IS_ERR instead of a simple NULL pointer check. For consistency, make a similar change to the blk_mq_alloc_request leg of blk_get_request. It may fail if the queue is dead, or the caller was unwilling to wait. 2009-05-11block: implement and enforce request peek/start/fetchTejun Heo
Till now block layer allowed two separate modes of request execution. A request is always acquired from the request queue via elv_next_request(). After that, drivers are free to either dequeue it or process it without dequeueing. Dequeue allows elv_next_request() to return the next request so that multiple requests can be in flight. Executing requests without dequeueing has its merits mostly in allowing drivers for simpler devices which can't do sg to deal with segments only without considering request boundary. However, the benefit this brings is dubious and declining while the cost of the API ambiguity is increasing. Segment based drivers are usually for very old or limited devices and as converting to dequeueing model isn't difficult, it doesn't justify the API overhead it puts on block layer and its more modern users. Previous patches converted all block low level drivers to dequeueing model. This patch completes the API transition by... * renaming elv_next_request() to blk_peek_request() * renaming blkdev_dequeue_request() to blk_start_request() * adding blk_fetch_request() which is combination of peek and start * disallowing completion of queued (not started) requests * applying new API to all LLDs Renamings are for consistency and to break out of tree code so that it's apparent that out of tree drivers need updating. 2009-04-28block: implement and use [__]blk_end_request_all()Tejun Heo
There are many [__]blk_end_request() call sites which call it with full request length and expect full completion. Many of them ensure that the request actually completes by doing BUG_ON() the return value, which is awkward and error-prone. This patch adds [__]blk_end_request_all() which takes @rq and @error and fully completes the request. BUG_ON() is added to to ensure that this actually happens. 2008-01-28blk_end_request: changing sx8 (take 4)Kiyoshi Ueda
This patch converts sx8 to use blk_end_request interfaces. Related 'uptodate' and 'is_ok' arguments are converted to 'error'. As a result, the interfaces of internal functions below are changed. o carm_end_request_queued o carm_end_rq o carm_handle_array_info o carm_handle_scan_chan o carm_handle_generic o carm_handle_rw The 'is_ok' is set at only one place in carm_handle_resp() below: int is_ok = (status == RMSG_OK); And the value is propagated to all functions above, and no modification in other places. This happened to work for ia64, powerpc, sparc64 and x86 because they happened to drag in that file via their <asm/dma-mapping.h>. On most of the others this probably broke. 2006-10-05IRQ: Maintain regs pointer globally rather than passing to IRQ handlersDavid Howells
Maintain a per-CPU global "struct pt_regs *" variable which can be used instead of passing regs around manually through all ~1800 interrupt handlers in the Linux kernel. The regs pointer is used in few places, but it potentially costs both stack space and code to pass it around. On the FRV arch, removing the regs parameter from all the genirq function results in a 20% speed up of the IRQ exit path (ie: from leaving timer_interrupt() to leaving do_IRQ()). Where appropriate, an arch may override the generic storage facility and do something different with the variable. On FRV, for instance, the address is maintained in GR28 at all times inside the kernel as part of general exception handling. Having looked over the code, it appears that the parameter may be handed down through up to twenty or so layers of functions. Consider a USB character device attached to a USB hub, attached to a USB controller that posts its interrupts through a cascaded auxiliary interrupt controller. A character device driver may want to pass regs to the sysrq handler through the input layer which adds another few layers of parameter passing. I've build this code with allyesconfig for x86_64 and i386. I've runtested the main part of the code on FRV and i386, though I can't test most of the drivers. I've also done partial conversion for powerpc and MIPS - these at least compile with minimal configurations. This will affect all archs. Mostly the changes should be relatively easy. Take do_IRQ(), store the regs pointer at the beginning, saving the old one: struct pt_regs *old_regs = set_irq_regs(regs); And put the old one back at the end: set_irq_regs(old_regs); Don't pass regs through to generic_handle_irq() or __do_IRQ(). In timer_interrupt(), this sort of change will be necessary: - update_process_times(user_mode(regs)); - profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING, regs); + update_process_times(user_mode(get_irq_regs())); + profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING); I'd like to move update_process_times()'s use of get_irq_regs() into itself, except that i386, alone of the archs, uses something other than user_mode(). Some notes on the interrupt handling in the drivers: (*) input_dev() is now gone entirely. The regs pointer is no longer stored in the input_dev struct. (*) finish_unlinks() in drivers/usb/host/ohci-q.c needs checking. It does something different depending on whether it's been supplied with a regs pointer or not. (*) Various IRQ handler function pointers have been moved to type irq_handler_t. 2006-01-08[PATCH] Add block_device_operations.getgeo block device methodChristoph Hellwig
HDIO_GETGEO is implemented in most block drivers, and all of them have to duplicate the code to copy the structure to userspace, as well as getting the start sector. This patch moves that to common code [1] and adds a ->getgeo method to fill out the raw kernel hd_geometry structure. For many drivers this means ->ioctl can go away now. [1] the s390 block drivers are odd in this respect. xpram sets ->start to 4 always which seems more than odd, and the dasd driver shifts the start offset around, probably because of it's non-standard sector size. 2006-01-06[BLOCK] add @uptodate to end_that_request_last() and @error to rq_end_io_fn()Tejun Heo
add @uptodate argument to end_that_request_last() and @error to rq_end_io_fn(). there's no generic way to pass error code to request completion function, making generic error handling of non-fs request difficult (rq->errors is driver-specific and each driver uses it differently). this patch adds @uptodate to end_that_request_last() and @error to rq_end_io_fn(). for fs requests, this doesn't really matter, so just using the same uptodate argument used in the last call to end_that_request_first() should suffice. imho, this can also help the generic command-carrying request jens is working on. * Newer hardware doesn't corrupt data when the queue depth is greater than one. Rather than force the user to recompile with a greater queue depth, make it a module parameter. * update copyright date * add MODULE_VERSION() * trim trailing whitespace * move CARM_SG_BOUNDARY to a separate enum, since its unsigned long * bump to version 1.0

2005-06-27[PATCH] drivers/block/sx8.c: Use the DMA_{64, 32}BIT_MASK constantsTobias Klauser
Use the DMA_{64,32}BIT_MASK constants from dma-mapping.h when calling pci_set_dma_mask() or pci_set_consistent_dma_mask() These patches include dma-mapping.h explicitly because it caused errors on some architectures otherwise.
