2017-03-15drm/i915/glk: Remove MODULE_FIRMWARE() tag from Geminilake's DMCAnder Conselvan de Oliveira
Geminilake's DMC is not yet available in the linux-firmware repository. To prevent userspace tools such as mkinitramfs to complain about missing firmware, remove the MODULE_FIRMWARE() tag for now. Currently, for display there is only one DMC image for KBL. 2016-06-27drm/i915/dmc: Step away from symbolic linksPatrik Jakobsson
Load specific firmware versions for the DMC instead of using symbolic links. The currently recommended versions are: SKL 1.26, KBL 1.01 and BXT 1.07. Certain DMC versions need workarounds in the driver which forces us to have a tight dependency between firmware and driver. In order to be able to provide a tested and known working configuration we must lock down on a specific DMC firmware version. 2016-04-19drm/i915/gen9: Fix runtime PM refcounting in case DMC firmware isn't loadedImre Deak
While we disable runtime PM and with that display power well support if the DMC firmware isn't loaded, we still want to disable power wells during system suspend and driver unload. So drop/reacquire the corresponding power refcount during suspend/resume and driver unloading. 2016-04-15drm/i915/bxt: Reject DMC firmware versions with known bugsImre Deak
DMC version 1.06 has a known bug, where the firmware polls forever for a port PLL to lock, if the PLL was disabled when entering DC5, which locks up the machine. Version 1.07 fixes this, so make that the minimum required version on BXT. 2016-03-07drm/i915/gen9: Fix DMC firmware initializationImre Deak
In commit 1e657ad7 we moved the last step of firmware initialization to skl_display_core_init(), where it will be run only during system resume, but not during driver loading. Since this init step needs to be done whenever we program the firmware fix this by moving the initialization to the end of intel_csr_load_program(). While at it simplify a bit csr_load_work_fn(). This is an expected error given the lack of the firmware so emit it at KERN_NOTICE and not KERN_ERROR. Also include the firmware URL in the user facing message so that the user can investigate and fix the issue on their own, and also explain the consequence in plain language. When adding IS_KABYLAKE definition I didn't included the DC states related because I was planing to include them with the patch that fixes DMC firmware loading, but I forgot them. Meanwhile this runtime pm code changed a lot for Skylake. Well, I didn't expect that this would crash the machine and I just noticed now that Sarah warned me our driver wasn't working. Thanks Sarah. 2015-11-18drm/i915: Type safe register read/writeVille Syrjälä
Make I915_READ and I915_WRITE more type safe by wrapping the register offset in a struct. This should eliminate most of the fumbles we've had with misplaced parens. This only takes care of normal mmio registers. We could extend the idea to other register types and define each with its own struct. That way you wouldn't be able to accidentally pass the wrong thing to a specific register access function. The gpio_reg setup is probably the ugliest thing left. But I figure I'd just leave it for now, and wait for some divine inspiration to strike before making it nice. As for the generated code, it's actually a bit better sometimes. Eg. looking at i915_irq_handler(), we can see the following change: lea 0x70024(%rdx,%rax,1),%r9d mov $0x1,%edx - movslq %r9d,%r9 - mov %r9,%rsi - mov %r9,-0x58(%rbp) - callq *0xd8(%rbx) + mov %r9d,%esi + mov %r9d,-0x48(%rbp) callq *0xd8(%rbx) So previously gcc thought the register offset might be signed and decided to sign extend it, just in case. Two benefits: - We can use FW_LOADER_USERSPACE_FALLBACK. - We can use flush_work to synchronize with the oustanding worker, which is a notch more obvious what it does than having a special completion. The next patch will properly synchronize against the async loader in the resume and unload code. 2015-11-12drm/i915/gen9: Remove csr.state, csr_lock and related code.Daniel Vetter
This removes two anti-patterns: - Locking shouldn't be used to synchronize with async work (of any form, whether callbacks, workers or other threads). This is what the mutex_lock/unlock seems to have been for in intel_csr_load_program. Instead ordering should be ensured with the generic wait_for_completion()/complete(). Or more specific functions provided by the core kernel like e.g. flush_work()/cancel_work_sync() in the case of synchronizing with a work item. - Don't invent own completion like the following code did with the (already removed) wait_for(csr_load_status_get()) pattern - it's really hard to get these right when you want them to be _really_ correct (and be fast) in all cases. Furthermore it's easier to read code using the well-known primitives than new ones using non-standard names. Before enabling/disabling DC6 check if the firmware is loaded successfully. This is guaranteed during runtime s/r, since otherwise we don't enable RPM, but not during system s/r. Note that it's still unclear whether we need to enable/disable DC6 during system s/r, until that's clarified, keep the current behavior and enable/disable DC6. Grabbing a runtime pm reference with intel_runtime_pm_get will only prevent device D3. But dmc firmware is required even earlier (namely for the skl power well 2). Hence we need to grab a rpm reference higher up in the hierarchy. For simplicity just grab the _INIT display power well. That's a bit too much, but since the firmware loading task should completely fairly quickly this won't be a real problem really. There is known issue on GT interrupt delivery with DC6 and firmwares <1.21. There is a suspicion that this causes spurious gpu hangs on driver init and with some workloads, as upgrading the firmware to 1.21 makes these problems disappear. As of now the current version included in distribution firmware packages is very like to be 1.19. Play it safe and refuse to load a firmware version that may affect gpu side stability. Dmc will restore the csr program except DC9, cold boot, warm reset, PCI function level reset, and hibernate/suspend. intel_csr_load_program() function is used to load the firmware data from kernel memory to csr address space. All values of csr address space will be zero if it got reset and the first byte of csr program is always a non-zero if firmware is loaded successfuly. Based on hardware status will load the firmware. Without this condition check if we overwrite the firmware data the counters exposed for dc5/dc6 (help for debugging) will be nullified. Note: Above commit message seems to be confused and the real problem apparently going on is that for suspend-to-idle and system standby the firmware survives (it's like runtime pm), but it doesn't for suspend-to-mem and hibernate-to-disk.
