2023-06-08drm/sti: Convert to platform remove callback returning voidUwe Kleine-König
The .remove() callback for a platform driver returns an int which makes many driver authors wrongly assume it's possible to do error handling by returning an error code. However the value returned is (mostly) ignored and this typically results in resource leaks. To improve here there is a quest to make the remove callback return void. In the first step of this quest all drivers are converted to .remove_new() which already returns void. Trivially convert the sti drm drivers from always returning zero in the remove callback to the void returning variant. With clang's kernel control flow integrity (kCFI, CONFIG_CFI_CLANG), indirect call targets are validated against the expected function pointer prototype to make sure the call target is valid to help mitigate ROP attacks. If they are not identical, there is a failure at run time, which manifests as either a kernel panic or thread getting killed. 2022-11-12drm/sti: Use drm_mode_copy()Ville Syrjälä
struct drm_display_mode embeds a list head, so overwriting the full struct with another one will corrupt the list (if the destination mode is on a list). Use drm_mode_copy() instead which explicitly preserves the list head of the destination mode. Even if we know the destination mode is not on any list using drm_mode_copy() seems decent as it sets a good example. Bad examples of not using it might eventually get copied into code where preserving the list head actually matters. Obviously one case not covered here is when the mode itself is embedded in a larger structure and the whole structure is copied. 2022-07-05drm: Remove linux/i2c.h from drm_crtc.hVille Syrjälä
drm_crtc.h has no need for linux/i2c.h, so don't include it. Avoids useless rebuilds of the entire universe when touching linux/i2c.h. Quite a few placs do currently depend on linux/i2c.h without actually including it directly. 2022-06-13ASoC: hdmi-codec: Update to modern DAI terminologyMark Brown
As part of retiring the old defines used to specify DAI formats update the hdmi_codec driver to use the modern names, including the variables in the struct hdmi_codec_daifmt exported to the DRM drivers. In updating this I did note that the only use of this information in DRM drivers is to reject clock provider settings, thinking about what this hardware is doing I rather suspect that there might not be any hardware out there which needs the configuration so it may be worth considering just having hdmi-codec support only clock consumer. 2020-03-18drm/sti: remove use of drm_debugfs functions as return valuesWambui Karuga
Since commit 987d65d01356 (drm: debugfs: make drm_debugfs_create_files() never fail), drm_debugfs_create_files() never fails, and should return void. This change therefore removes it uses as a return value in various functions across drm/sti. With these changes, the affected functions have been changed to use a void return value. v2: convert sti_mixer_debugfs_init() and sti_compositor_debugfs_init() to return void too. 2020-02-26drm/bridge: Extend bridge API to disable connector creationLaurent Pinchart
Most bridge drivers create a DRM connector to model the connector at the output of the bridge. This model is historical and has worked pretty well so far, but causes several issues: - It prevents supporting more complex display pipelines where DRM connector operations are split over multiple components. For instance a pipeline with a bridge connected to the DDC signals to read EDID data, and another one connected to the HPD signal to detect connection and disconnection, will not be possible to support through this model. - It requires every bridge driver to implement similar connector handling code, resulting in code duplication. - It assumes that a bridge will either be wired to a connector or to another bridge, but doesn't support bridges that can be used in both positions very well (although there is some ad-hoc support for this in the analogix_dp bridge driver). In order to solve these issues, ownership of the connector should be moved to the display controller driver (where it can be implemented using helpers provided by the core). Extend the bridge API to allow disabling connector creation in bridge drivers as a first step towards the new model. The new flags argument to the bridge .attach() operation allows instructing the bridge driver to skip creating a connector. Unconditionally set the new flags argument to 0 for now to keep the existing behaviour, and modify all existing bridge drivers to return an error when connector creation is not requested as they don't support this feature yet. We are about to add a drm_bridge_state that inherits from drm_private_state which is defined in drm_atomic.h. Problem is, drm_atomic.h includes drm_crtc.h which in turn includes drm_bridge.h, leading to "drm_private_state has incomplete type" error. Let's force all users of the drm_bridge API to explicitly include drm_bridge.h. Having the probe helper stuff (which pretty much everyone needs) in the drm_crtc_helper.h file (which atomic drivers should never need) is confusing. Split them out. To make sure I actually achieved the goal here I went through all drivers. And indeed, all atomic drivers are now free of drm_crtc_helper.h includes. v2: Make it compile. There was so much compile fail on arm drivers that I figured I'll better not include any of the acks on v1. v3: Massive rebase because i915 has lost a lot of drmP.h includes, but not all: Through drm_crtc_helper.h > drm_modeset_helper.h -> drmP.h there was still one, which this patch largely removes. Which means rolling out lots more includes all over. Removing the drm_bridge_remove call should avoid a NULL dereference during list processing in drm_bridge_remove if the error path is ever taken. The more natural approach would perhaps be to add a drm_bridge_add, but there are several other bridges that never call drm_bridge_add. Just removing the drm_bridge_remove is the easier fix. 2017-11-22drm/edid: Allow HDMI infoframe without VIC or S3DVille Syrjälä
Appedix F of HDMI 2.0 says that some HDMI sink may fail to switch from 3D to 2D mode in a timely fashion if the source simply stops sending the HDMI infoframe. The suggested workaround is to keep sending the infoframe even when strictly not necessary (ie. no VIC and no S3D). HDMI 1.4 does allow for this behaviour, stating that sending the infoframe is optional in this case. The infoframe was first specified in HDMI 1.4, so in theory sinks predating that may not appreciate us sending an uknown infoframe their way. To avoid regressions let's try to determine if the sink supports the infoframe or not. Unfortunately there's no direct way to do that, so instead we'll just check if we managed to parse any HDMI 1.4 4k or stereo modes from the EDID, and if so we assume the sink will accept the infoframe. HDMI 1.4b support the CEA video modes as per range of CEA-861-D (VIC 1-64). For any other mode, the VIC filed in AVI infoframes should be 0. HDMI 2.0 sinks, support video modes range as per CEA-861-F spec, which is extended to (VIC 1-107). This patch adds a bool input variable, which indicates if the connected sink is a HDMI 2.0 sink or not. This will make sure that we don't pass a HDMI 2.0 VIC to a HDMI 1.4 sink. This patch touches all drm drivers, who are callers of this function drm_hdmi_avi_infoframe_from_display_mode but to make sure there is no change in current behavior, is_hdmi2 is kept as false. In case of I915 driver, this patch: - checks if the connected display is HDMI 2.0. - HDMI infoframes carry one of this two type of information: - VIC for 4K modes for HDMI 1.4 sinks - S3D information for S3D modes As CEA-861-F has already defined VICs for 4K videomodes, this patch doesn't allow sending HDMI infoframes for HDMI 2.0 sinks, until the mode is 3D. This fix allows to play audio while HDMI is disconnected. When HDMI is disable, audio configuration is stored and samples are dropped (by HDMI IP). When HDMI is enabled, audio HDMI configuration is applied and samples are outputted on HDMI wire. Instead of linking encoders and bridges in every driver (and getting it wrong half of the time, as many drivers forget to set the drm_bridge encoder pointer), do so in core code. The drm_bridge_attach() function needs the encoder and optional previous bridge to perform that task, update all the callers.
