2017-01-19Make static usermode helper binaries constantGreg Kroah-Hartman
There are a number of usermode helper binaries that are "hard coded" in the kernel today, so mark them as "const" to make it harder for someone to change where the variables point to. 2015-08-06windfarm: make wf_critical_overtemp() staticPaul Bolle
wf_critical_overtemp() is exported. But nothing uses that export. That's unsurprising because there's no header that defines it. Stop exporting that function and make it static. Signed-off-by: Paul Bolle <pebolle@tiscali.nl> Signed-off-by: Michael Ellerman <mpe@ellerman.id.au>

2012-04-30powerpc/powermac: New windfarm driver for PowerMac G5 (AGP) and Xserve G5Benjamin Herrenschmidt
This replaces the old therm_pm72 using the same windfarm infrastructure that was used for other PowerMac G5 models. The fan speeds and sensors should now be visible in the same location in sysfs. The driver is split into separate core modules for PowerMac7,2 (and 7,3) and RackMac3,1, with a lot of the shared code now in the separate sensor and control modules. 2012-04-30powerpc/windfarm: Improve display of fan speeds in sysfsBenjamin Herrenschmidt
Controls registered as RPM and PWM fans are now displayed with the "RPM" or "%" suffix respectively to make it clearer to the user what the value actually means since the fan type isn't otherwise obvious. Signed-off-by: Benjamin Herrenschmidt <benh@kernel.crashing.org>

2010-03-30include cleanup: Update gfp.h and slab.h includes to prepare for breaking ↵Tejun Heo
implicit slab.h inclusion from percpu.h percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies. percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is used as the basis of conversion. http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py The script does the followings. * Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used, gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h. * When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered - alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there doesn't seem to be any matching order. * If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the file. The conversion was done in the following steps. 1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400 files. 2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion, some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added inclusions to around 150 files. 3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits from #2 to make sure no file was left behind. 4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed. e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually. 5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as necessary. 6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h. 7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq). * x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config. * powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig * sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig * ia64 SMP allmodconfig * s390 SMP allmodconfig * alpha SMP allmodconfig * um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig 8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as a separate patch and serve as bisection point. Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step 6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch. If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of the specific arch. 2007-11-08[POWERPC] windfarm: Fix windfarm thread freezer interactionJohannes Berg
When I fixed the windfarm freezer interaction first in commit 1ed2ddf380e19dafeec2150ca709ef7f4a67cd21, an earlier patch than the one I came up with after comments was committed. This has come back to haunt us now because commit d5d8c5976d6adeddb8208c240460411e2198b393 changed the freezer to no long send signals. Fix it by removing the windfarm thread's signal logic and restoring the original try_to_freeze(). We could simply revert 1ed2ddf380e19dafeec2150ca709ef7f4a67cd21 now but I feel that the assertion that no signal is delivered to the windfarm thread needs not be there. 2007-07-17Freezer: make kernel threads nonfreezable by defaultRafael J. Wysocki
Currently, the freezer treats all tasks as freezable, except for the kernel threads that explicitly set the PF_NOFREEZE flag for themselves. This approach is problematic, since it requires every kernel thread to either set PF_NOFREEZE explicitly, or call try_to_freeze(), even if it doesn't care for the freezing of tasks at all. It seems better to only require the kernel threads that want to or need to be frozen to use some freezer-related code and to remove any freezer-related code from the other (nonfreezable) kernel threads, which is done in this patch. The patch causes all kernel threads to be nonfreezable by default (ie. to have PF_NOFREEZE set by default) and introduces the set_freezable() function that should be called by the freezable kernel threads in order to unset PF_NOFREEZE. It also makes all of the currently freezable kernel threads call set_freezable(), so it shouldn't cause any (intentional) change of behaviour to appear. Additionally, it updates documentation to describe the freezing of tasks more accurately. [akpm@linux-foundation.org: build fixes] Signed-off-by: Rafael J. 2007-07-11sysfs: kill unnecessary attribute->ownerTejun Heo
sysfs is now completely out of driver/module lifetime game. After deletion, a sysfs node doesn't access anything outside sysfs proper, so there's no reason to hold onto the attribute owners. Note that often the wrong modules were accounted for as owners leading to accessing removed modules. This patch kills now unnecessary attribute->owner. Note that with this change, userland holding a sysfs node does not prevent the backing module from being unloaded. 2006-03-27[PATCH] Notifier chain update: API changesAlan Stern
The kernel's implementation of notifier chains is unsafe. There is no protection against entries being added to or removed from a chain while the chain is in use. The issues were discussed in this thread: http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=linux-kernel&m=113018709002036&w=2 We noticed that notifier chains in the kernel fall into two basic usage classes: "Blocking" chains are always called from a process context and the callout routines are allowed to sleep; "Atomic" chains can be called from an atomic context and the callout routines are not allowed to sleep. We decided to codify this distinction and make it part of the API. Therefore this set of patches introduces three new, parallel APIs: one for blocking notifiers, one for atomic notifiers, and one for "raw" notifiers (which is really just the old API under a new name). New kinds of data structures are used for the heads of the chains, and new routines are defined for registration, unregistration, and calling a chain. The three APIs are explained in include/linux/notifier.h and their implementation is in kernel/sys.c. With atomic and blocking chains, the implementation guarantees that the chain links will not be corrupted and that chain callers will not get messed up by entries being added or removed. For raw chains the implementation provides no guarantees at all; users of this API must provide their own protections. (The idea was that situations may come up where the assumptions of the atomic and blocking APIs are not appropriate, so it should be possible for users to handle these things in their own way.) There are some limitations, which should not be too hard to live with. For atomic/blocking chains, registration and unregistration must always be done in a process context since the chain is protected by a mutex/rwsem. Also, a callout routine for a non-raw chain must not try to register or unregister entries on its own chain. (This did happen in a couple of places and the code had to be changed to avoid it.) Since atomic chains may be called from within an NMI handler, they cannot use spinlocks for synchronization. Instead we use RCU. The overhead falls almost entirely in the unregister routine, which is okay since unregistration is much less frequent that calling a chain. Here is the list of chains that we adjusted and their classifications. None of them use the raw API, so for the moment it is only a placeholder. If they are, please let us know or submit a patch to fix them. Note that any chain that gets called very frequently should be atomic, because the rwsem read-locking used for blocking chains is very likely to incur cache misses on SMP systems. (However, if the chain's callout routines may sleep then the chain cannot be atomic.) 2006-03-03[PATCH] powerpc: Fix old g5 issues with windfarmBenjamin Herrenschmidt
Some of the windfarm sensor modules can initialize on old machines that don't have full windfarm support like non-dual core desktop G5s. Unfortunately, by doing so, they would trigger a bug in their matching algorithm causing them to attach to the wrong bus, thus triggering issues with the i2c core and breaking the thermal driver. This patch fixes the probing issue (so that they will work when a windfarm port is done to these machines) and also prevents for now windfarm to load at all on these machines that still use therm_pm72 to avoid wasting resources. This patch adds a windfarm module, windfarm_pm112, for the dual core G5s (both 2 and 4 core models), keeping the machine from getting into vacuum-cleaner mode ;) For proper credits, the patch was initially written by Paul Mackerras, and slightly reworked by me to add overtemp handling among others. The patch also removes the sysfs attributes from windfarm_pm81 and windfarm_pm91 and instead adds code to the windfarm core to automagically expose attributes for sensor & controls.
