The I2C core framework provides a simplified probe framework from commit b8a1a4cd5a98 ("i2c: Provide a temporary .probe_new() call-back type"). Initialise the V4L2 fwnode endpoints to zero in all drivers using v4l2_fwnode_endpoint_parse(). This prepares for setting default endpoint flags as well as the bus type. 2018-10-03media: v4l: i2c: Add a comment not to use static sub-device names in the futureSakari Ailus
A number of sub-device drivers used a static name for the sub-device, and thus the media entity. As the entity name must be unique within a media device, this makes it impossible to have more than one instance of each device in a media device. This is a rather severe limitation. Instead of fixing these drivers, add a comment to the drivers noting that such static names may not be used in the future. The alternative of fixing the drivers is troublesome as the entity (as well as sub-device) name is part of the uAPI. Changing that is almost certain to break something. As these devices are old but no-one has encountered a problem with the static names, leave it as-is. As warned by smatch: drivers/media/i2c/s5c73m3/s5c73m3-core.c:268 s5c73m3_check_status() error: uninitialized symbol 'status'. if s5c73m3_check_status() is called too late, time_is_after_jiffies(end) will return 0, causing the while to abort before reading status. The current code will do the wrong thing here, as it will still check if status != value. The right fix here is to change the logic to ensure that it will always read the status. 2016-01-11[media] media framework: rename pads init function to media_entity_pads_init()Mauro Carvalho Chehab
With the MC next gen rework, what's left for media_entity_init() is to just initialize the PADs. However, certain devices, like a FLASH led/light doesn't have any input or output PAD. So, there's no reason why calling media_entity_init() would be mandatory. Also, despite its name, what this function actually does is to initialize the PADs data. So, rename it to media_entity_pads_init() in order to reflect that. The media entity actual init happens during entity register, at media_device_register_entity(). Entities should have one or more functions. Calling it as a type proofed to not be correct, as an entity could eventually have more than one type. So, rename the field as function. Please notice that this patch doesn't extend support for multiple function entities. Such change will happen when we have real case drivers using it. No functional changes. This sensor driver is abusing MEDIA_ENT_T_V4L2_SUBDEV, creating some subdevs with a non-existing type. As this is a sensor driver, one of the entries is MEDIA_ENT_T_CAM_SENSOR. 2016-01-11[media] media: get rid of unused "extra_links" param on media_entity_init()Mauro Carvalho Chehab
Currently, media_entity_init() creates an array with the links, allocated at init time. It provides a parameter (extra_links) that would allocate more links than the current needs, but this is not used by any driver. As we want to be able to do dynamic link allocation/removal, we'll need to change the implementation of the links. So, before doing that, let's first remove that extra unused parameter, in order to cleanup the interface first. 2015-11-18[media] s5c73m3: Export OF module alias informationJavier Martinez Canillas
The SPI core always reports the MODALIAS uevent as "spi:<modalias>" regardless of the mechanism that was used to register the device (i.e: OF or board code) and the table that is used later to match the driver with the device (i.e: SPI id table or OF match table). So drivers needs to export the SPI id table and this be built into the module or udev won't have the necessary information to autoload the needed driver module when the device is added. But this means that OF-only drivers needs to have both OF and SPI id tables that have to be kept in sync and also the dev node compatible manufacturer prefix is stripped when reporting the MODALIAS. Which can lead to issues if two vendors use the same SPI device name for example. To avoid the above, the SPI core behavior may be changed in the future to not require an SPI device table for OF-only drivers and report the OF module alias. So, it's better to also export the OF table even when is unused now to prevent breaking module loading when the core changes. Currently, include/media is messy, as it contains both the V4L2 core headers and some driver-specific headers on the same place. That makes harder to identify what core headers should be documented and what headers belong to I2C drivers that are included only by bridge/main drivers that would require the functions provided by them. Let's move those i2c specific files to its own subdirectory. The SPI core always reports the MODALIAS uevent as "spi:<modalias>" regardless of the mechanism that was used to register the device (i.e: OF or board code) and the table that is used later to match the driver with the device (i.e: SPI id table or OF match table). So drivers needs to export the SPI id table and this be built into the module or udev won't have the necessary information to autoload the needed driver module when the device is added. But this means that OF-only drivers needs to have both OF and SPI id tables that have to be kept in sync and also the dev node compatible manufacturer prefix is stripped when reporting the MODALIAS. Which can lead to issues if two vendors use the same SPI device name for example. To avoid the above, the SPI core behavior may be changed in the future to not require an SPI device table for OF-only drivers and report the OF module alias. So, it's better to also export the OF table even when is unused now to prevent breaking module loading when the core changes. 2015-03-23[media] v4l2-subdev: replace v4l2_subdev_fh by v4l2_subdev_pad_configHans Verkuil
If a subdevice pad op is called from a bridge driver, then there is no v4l2_subdev_fh struct that can be passed to the subdevice. This made it hard to use such subdevs from a bridge driver. This patch replaces the v4l2_subdev_fh pointer by a v4l2_subdev_pad_config pointer in the pad ops. This allows bridge drivers to use the various try_ pad ops by creating a v4l2_subdev_pad_config struct and passing it along to the pad op. The v4l2_subdev_get_try_* macros had to be changed because of this, so I also took the opportunity to use the full name of the v4l2_subdev_get_try_* functions in the __V4L2_SUBDEV_MK_GET_TRY macro arguments: if you now do 'git grep v4l2_subdev_get_try_format' you will actually find the header where it is defined. One remark regarding the drivers/staging/media/davinci_vpfe patches: the *_init_formats() functions assumed that fh could be NULL. However, that's not true for this driver, it's always set. This is almost certainly a copy and paste from the omap3isp driver. I've updated the code to reflect the fact that fh is never NULL.
