Don't blindly copy status value received from the firmware into internal client status field, It may be positive and ERR_PTR(ret) will translate it into an invalid address and the caller will crash. The upper layer may retry call to mei_cl_dma_alloc_and_map(), in that case the client status may be non-zero after the previous call and the wait condition will be true immediately. Set cl->status to zero to allow waiting for an actual result from the firmware. 2021-11-26mei: bus: add client dma interfaceAlexander Usyskin
Expose the client dma mapping via mei client bus interface. The client dma has to be mapped before the device is enabled, therefore we need to create device linking already during mapping and we need to unmap after the client is disable hence we need to postpone the unlink and flush till unmapping or when destroying the device. 2021-10-13mei: hbm: drop hbm responses on early shutdownAlexander Usyskin
Drop HBM responses also in the early shutdown phase where the usual traffic is allowed. Extend the rule that drop HBM responses received during the shutdown phase by also in MEI_DEV_POWERING_DOWN state. This resolves the stall if the driver is stopping in the middle of the link init or link reset. In [1], Christoph Hellwig has proposed to remove the wrappers in include/linux/pci-dma-compat.h. Some reasons why this API should be removed have been given by Julia Lawall in [2]. Finally, Arnd Bergmann reminded that the documentation was updated 11 years ago to only describe the modern linux/dma-mapping.h interfaces and mark the old bus-specific ones as no longer recommended, see commit 216bf58f4092 ("Documentation: convert PCI-DMA-mapping.txt to use the generic DMA API"). 2021-07-21bus: Make remove callback return voidUwe Kleine-König
The driver core ignores the return value of this callback because there is only little it can do when a device disappears. This is the final bit of a long lasting cleanup quest where several buses were converted to also return void from their remove callback. Additionally some resource leaks were fixed that were caused by drivers returning an error code in the expectation that the driver won't go away. With struct bus_type::remove returning void it's prevented that newly implemented buses return an ignored error code and so don't anticipate wrong expectations for driver authors. The mei extension header was build as array of flexible structures which will not work if actually more headers are added. (Currently only vtag header was used). Sparse reports: drivers/misc/mei/hw.h:253:32: warning: array of flexible structures Use basic type u8 for the variable sized extension. Define explicitly mei_ext_hdr_vtag structure. And also fix mei_ext_next() function to point correctly to the end of the header. Note: the headers are part of firmware interface and need to be __packed. The driver core ignores the return value of mei_cl_device_remove() so passing an error value doesn't solve any problem. As most mei drivers' remove callbacks return 0 unconditionally and returning a different value doesn't have any effect, change this prototype to return void and return 0 unconditionally in mei_cl_device_remove(). The only driver that could return an error value is modified to emit an explicit warning in the error case. The driver core only calls a bus' remove function when there is actually a driver and a device. So drop the needless check and assign cldrv earlier. (Side note: The check for cldev being non-NULL is broken anyhow, because to_mei_cl_device() is a wrapper around container_of() for a member that is not the first one. So cldev only can become NULL if dev is (void *)0xc (for archs with 32 bit pointers) or (void *)0x18 (for archs with 64 bit pointers).) This reverts commit d162219c655c8cf8003128a13840d6c1e183fb80. The device uses a VIRTIO device ID out of a not-for-production range. Releasing Linux using an ID out of this range will make it conflict with development setups. An official request to reserve an ID for an MEI device is yet to be submitted to the virtio TC, thus there's no chance it will be reserved and fixed in time before the next release. Once requested it usually takes 2-3 weeks to land in the spec, which means the device can be supported with the official ID in the next Linux version if contributors act quickly.
