2023-09-20net: ethernet: 8390: Convert to platform remove callback returning voidUwe Kleine-König
The .remove() callback for a platform driver returns an int which makes many driver authors wrongly assume it's possible to do error handling by returning an error code. However the value returned is ignored (apart from emitting a warning) and this typically results in resource leaks. To improve here there is a quest to make the remove callback return void. In the first step of this quest all drivers are converted to .remove_new() which already returns void. Eventually after all drivers are converted, .remove_new() is renamed to .remove(). Trivially convert these drivers from always returning zero in the remove callback to the void returning variant. 2022-03-09net:mcf8390: Use platform_get_irq() to get the interruptMinghao Chi (CGEL ZTE)
It is not recommened to use platform_get_resource(pdev, IORESOURCE_IRQ) for requesting IRQ's resources any more, as they can be not ready yet in case of DT-booting. platform_get_irq() instead is a recommended way for getting IRQ even if it was not retrieved earlier. It also makes code simpler because we're getting "int" value right away and no conversion from resource to int is required. Make them all select a new CONFIG_NETDEV_LEGACY_INIT symbol, and drop the entire probe logic when that is disabled. 2021-08-03m68k: remove legacy probingArnd Bergmann
There are six m68k specific drivers that use the legacy probe method in drivers/net/Space.c. However, all of these only support a single device, and they completely ignore the command line settings from netdev_boot_setup_check, so there is really no point at all. Aside from sun3_82586, these already have a module_init function that can be used for built-in mode as well, simply by removing the #ifdef. Note that the 82596 driver was previously used on ISA as well, but that got dropped long ago. Most users of ndo_do_ioctl are ethernet drivers that implement the MII commands SIOCGMIIPHY/SIOCGMIIREG/SIOCSMIIREG, or hardware timestamping with SIOCSHWTSTAMP/SIOCGHWTSTAMP. Separate these from the few drivers that use ndo_do_ioctl to implement SIOCBOND, SIOCBR and SIOCWANDEV commands. This is a purely cosmetic change intended to help readers find their way through the implementation. With legacy PM, drivers themselves were responsible for managing the device's power states and takes care of register states. After upgrading to the generic structure, PCI core will take care of required tasks and drivers should do only device-specific operations. Thus, there is no need to call the PCI helper functions like pci_enable/disable_device(), pci_save/restore_sate() and pci_set_power_state(). Compile-tested only. Since commit 84af7a6194e4 ("checkpatch: kconfig: prefer 'help' over '---help---'"), the number of '---help---' has been gradually decreasing, but there are still more than 2400 instances. This commit finishes the conversion. While I touched the lines, I also fixed the indentation. There are a variety of indentation styles found. a) 4 spaces + '---help---' b) 7 spaces + '---help---' c) 8 spaces + '---help---' d) 1 space + 1 tab + '---help---' e) 1 tab + '---help---' (correct indentation) f) 1 tab + 1 space + '---help---' g) 1 tab + 2 spaces + '---help---' In order to convert all of them to 1 tab + 'help', I ran the following commend: $ find . -name 'Kconfig*' | xargs sed -i 's/^[[:space:]]*---help---/\thelp/' Signed-off-by: Masahiro Yamada <masahiroy@kernel.org>
2020-05-26ne2k-pci: Fix various coding-style issues and improve printk() usageArmin Wolf
Fixed a ton of minor checkpatch errors/warnings and remove version printing at module init/when device is found and use MODULE_VERSION instead. Also modifying the RTL8029 PCI string to include the compatible RTL8029AS nic. The only mayor issue remaining is the missing SPDX tag, but since the exact version of the GPL is not stated anywhere inside the file, its impossible to add such a tag at the moment. But maybe it is possible, since 8390.h states Donald Becker's 8390 drivers are licensed under GPL 2.2 only (= GPL-2.0-only ?). The kernel module containing this patch compiles and runs without problems on a RTL8029AS-based NE2000 clone card with kernel 5.7.0-rc6. [Resent to net instead of net-next - may clash with Anders Roxell's patch series addressing duplicate module names] Commit 31dd83b96641 ("net-next: phy: new Asix Electronics PHY driver") introduced a new PHY driver drivers/net/phy/asix.c that causes a module name conflict with a pre-existiting driver (drivers/net/usb/asix.c). The PHY driver is used by the X-Surf 100 ethernet card driver, and loaded by that driver via its PHY ID. A rename of the driver looks unproblematic. Rename PHY driver to ax88796b.c in order to resolve name conflict.
