2011-08-04intel drivers: repair missing flush operationsJesse Brandeburg
after review of all intel drivers, found several instances where drivers had the incorrect pattern of: memory mapped write(); delay(); which should always be: memory mapped write(); write flush(); /* aka memory mapped read */ delay(); explanation: The reason for including the flush is that writes can be held (posted) in PCI/PCIe bridges, but the read always has to complete synchronously and therefore has to flush all pending writes to a device. If a write is held and followed by a delay, the delay means nothing because the write may not have reached hardware (maybe even not until the next read) Signed-off-by: Jesse Brandeburg <jesse.brandeburg@intel.com> Tested-by: Aaron Brown <aaron.f.brown@intel.com> Signed-off-by: Jeff Kirsher <jeffrey.t.kirsher@intel.com>
2011-05-22Add appropriate <linux/prefetch.h> include for prefetch usersPaul Gortmaker
After discovering that wide use of prefetch on modern CPUs could be a net loss instead of a win, net drivers which were relying on the implicit inclusion of prefetch.h via the list headers showed up in the resulting cleanup fallout. Give them an explicit include via the following $0.02 script. ========================================= #!/bin/bash MANUAL="" for i in `git grep -l 'prefetch(.*)' .` ; do grep -q '<linux/prefetch.h>' $i if [ $? = 0 ] ; then continue fi ( echo '?^#include <linux/?a' echo '#include <linux/prefetch.h>' echo . echo w echo q ) | ed -s $i > /dev/null 2>&1 if [ $? != 0 ]; then echo $i needs manual fixup MANUAL="$i $MANUAL" fi done echo ------------------- 8\<---------------------- echo vi $MANUAL ========================================= Signed-off-by: Paul <paul.gortmaker@windriver.com> [ Fixed up some incorrect #include placements, and added some non-network drivers and the fib_trie.c case - Linus ] Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>
2011-05-04ixgb: convert to set_phys_idJeff Kirsher
Based on the original patch sent by Stephen Hemminger. This version incorporates the ethtool changes that Bruce Allan submitted. CC: Stephen Hemminger <shemminger@vyatta.com> Signed-off-by: Jeff Kirsher <jeffrey.t.kirsher@intel.com> Tested-by: Evan Swanson <evan.swanson@intel.com>
2011-04-29ethtool: cosmetic: Use ethtool ethtool_cmd_speed APIDavid Decotigny
This updates the network drivers so that they don't access the ethtool_cmd::speed field directly, but use ethtool_cmd_speed() instead. For most of the drivers, these changes are purely cosmetic and don't fix any problem, such as for those 1GbE/10GbE drivers that indirectly call their own ethtool get_settings()/mii_ethtool_gset(). The changes are meant to enforce code consistency and provide robustness with future larger throughputs, at the expense of a few CPU cycles for each ethtool operation. All drivers compiled with make allyesconfig ion x86_64 have been updated. Tested: make allyesconfig on x86_64 + e1000e/bnx2x work Signed-off-by: David Decotigny <decot@google.com> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
2011-04-29ethtool: Use full 32 bit speed range in ethtool's set_settingsDavid Decotigny
This makes sure the ethtool's set_settings() callback of network drivers don't ignore the 16 most significant bits when ethtool calls their set_settings(). All drivers compiled with make allyesconfig on x86_64 have been updated. Signed-off-by: David Decotigny <decot@google.com> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
2011-03-11ixgb: convert to new VLAN modelEmil Tantilov
Based on a patch from Jesse Gross <jesse@nicira.com> This switches the ixgb driver to use the new VLAN interfaces. In doing this, it completes the work begun in ae54496f9e8d40c89e5668205c181dccfa9ecda1 allowing the use of hardware VLAN insertion without having a VLAN group configured. 2010-12-16net: Fix drivers advertising HW_CSUM feature to use csum_startMichał Mirosław
Some drivers are using skb_transport_offset(skb) instead of skb->csum_start for NETIF_F_HW_CSUM offload. This does not matter now, but if someone implements checksumming of encapsulated packets then this will break silently. TSO output paths are left as they are, since they are for IP+TCP only (might be worth converting though). Signed-off-by: Michał Mirosław <mirq-linux@rere.qmqm.pl> Signed-off-by: David S. 2010-12-12drivers/net: don't use flush_scheduled_work()Tejun Heo
flush_scheduled_work() is on its way out. This patch contains simple conversions to replace flush_scheduled_work() usage with direct cancels and flushes. Directly cancel the used works on driver detach and flush them in other cases. The conversions are mostly straight forward and the only dangers are, * Forgetting to cancel/flush one or more used works. * Cancelling when a work should be flushed (ie. the work must be executed once scheduled whether the driver is detaching or not). I've gone over the changes multiple times but it would be much appreciated if you can review with the above points in mind. Signed-off-by: Tejun Heo <tj@kernel.org> Cc: "David S. Based on a patch from Jesse Gross. Enable vlan tag insertion even when vlan group is not configured. For ixgb HW both CTRL0.VME and VLE bit in the Tx descriptor need to be set in order to enable HW acceleration. 2010-09-22e1000/e1000e/igb/ixgb/ixgbe: set NETIF_F_HIGHDMA for VLAN feature flagsYi Zou
If the netdev->features is set with NETIF_F_HIGHDMA, we should set the corresponding netdev->vlan_features as well to allow VLAN netdev created on top of the real netdev to be able to also benefit from HIGHDMA on 32bit system, reducing the performance hit that is caused by __skb_linearize(), particularly for large send. This is fixed in this patch for all Intel e1000, e1000e, igb, ixgbe, and ixgbe drivers since this should be beneficial to all devices supported by these drivers. 2010-08-08e100/e1000*/igb*/ixgb*: Add missing read memory barrierJeff Kirsher
Based on patches from Sonny Rao and Milton Miller... Combined the patches to fix up clean_tx_irq and clean_rx_irq. The PowerPC architecture does not require loads to independent bytes to be ordered without adding an explicit barrier. In ixgbe_clean_rx_irq we load the status bit then load the packet data. With packet split disabled if these loads go out of order we get a stale packet, but we will notice the bad sequence numbers and drop it. The problem occurs with packet split enabled where the TCP/IP header and data are in different descriptors. If the reads go out of order we may have data that doesn't match the TCP/IP header. Since we use hardware checksumming this bad data is never verified and it makes it all the way to the application. This bug was found during stress testing and adding this barrier has been shown to fix it. The bug can manifest as a data integrity issue (bad payload data) or as a BUG in skb_pull(). This was a nasty bug to hunt down, if people agree with the fix I think it's a candidate for stable. Previously Submitted to e1000-devel only for ixgbe http://marc.info/?l=e1000-devel&m=126593062701537&w=3 We've now seen this problem hit with other device drivers (e1000e mostly) So I'm resubmitting with fixes for other Intel Device Drivers with similar issues. 2010-05-14ixgb and e1000: Use new function for copybreak testsJoe Perches
There appears to be an off-by-1 defect in the maximum packet size copied when copybreak is speified in these modules. The copybreak module params are specified as: "Maximum size of packet that is copied to a new buffer on receive" The tests are changed from "< copybreak" to "<= copybreak" and moved into new static functions for readability. This patch removes from drivers/net/ all the unnecessary return; statements that precede the last closing brace of void functions. It does not remove the returns that are immediately preceded by a label as gcc doesn't like that. It also does not remove null void functions with return. Done via: $ grep -rP --include=*.[ch] -l "return;\n}" net/ | \ xargs perl -i -e 'local $/ ; while (<>) { s/\n[ \t\n]+return;\n}/\n}/g; print; }' with some cleanups by hand. 2009-06-08net: skb_shared_info optimizationEric Dumazet
skb_dma_unmap() is quite expensive for small packets, because we use two different cache lines from skb_shared_info. One to access nr_frags, one to access dma_maps[0] Instead of dma_maps being an array of MAX_SKB_FRAGS + 1 elements, let dma_head alone in a new dma_head field, close to nr_frags, to reduce cache lines misses. after the recent changes to wired drivers to use only netif_carrier_off the driver can have outstanding tx work to complete that will never complete once link is down. Since the intel hardware will hold this tx work forever, the driver notices a tx timeout condition internally and might try to instigate printk and reset of the part with a netif_stop_queue, which doesn't work because link is down. 2009-04-20ixgb: fix link down initial stateJesse Brandeburg
As reported by Andrew Lutomirski <amluto@gmail.com> All the intel wired ethernet drivers were calling netif_carrier_off and netif_stop_queue (or variants) before calling register_netdevice This is incorrect behavior as was pointed out by davem, and causes ifconfig and friends to report a strange state before first link after the driver was loaded, since without a netif_carrier_off, the stack assumes carrier_on, but before register_netdev, netlink messages are not sent out telling link state. This apparently confused *some* versions of networkmanager. in addition this driver appeared to need a netif_start_queue at the end of open.
