2025-03-12block: change blk_mq_add_to_batch() third argument type to boolShin'ichiro Kawasaki
Commit 1f47ed294a2b ("block: cleanup and fix batch completion adding conditions") modified the evaluation criteria for the third argument, 'ioerror', in the blk_mq_add_to_batch() function. Initially, the function had checked if 'ioerror' equals zero. Following the commit, it started checking for negative error values, with the presumption that such values, for instance -EIO, would be passed in. However, blk_mq_add_to_batch() callers do not pass negative error values. Instead, they pass status codes defined in various ways: - NVMe PCI and Apple drivers pass NVMe status code - virtio_blk driver passes the virtblk request header status byte - null_blk driver passes blk_status_t These codes are either zero or positive, therefore the revised check fails to function as intended. Specifically, with the NVMe PCI driver, this modification led to the failure of the blktests test case nvme/039. In this test scenario, errors are artificially injected to the NVMe driver, resulting in positive NVMe status codes passed to blk_mq_add_to_batch(), which unexpectedly processes the failed I/O in a batch. Hence the failure. To correct the ioerror check within blk_mq_add_to_batch(), make all callers to uniformly pass the argument as boolean. Modify the callers to check their specific status codes and pass the boolean value 'is_error'. Also describe the arguments of blK_mq_add_to_batch as kerneldoc. iBoot on at least some firmwares/machines leaves ANS2 running, requiring a wake command instead of a CPU boot (and if we reset ANS2 in that state, everything breaks). Only stop the CPU if RTKit was running, and only do the reset dance if the CPU is stopped. Normal shutdown handoff: - RTKit not yet running - CPU detected not running - Reset - CPU powerup - RTKit boot wait ANS2 left running/idle: - RTKit not yet running - CPU detected running - RTKit wake message Sleep/resume cycle: - RTKit shutdown - CPU stopped - (sleep here) - CPU detected not running - Reset - CPU powerup - RTKit boot wait Shutdown or device removal: - RTKit shutdown - CPU stopped Therefore, the CPU running bit serves as a consistent flag of whether the coprocessor is fully stopped or just idle. 2025-01-06block: remove BLK_MQ_F_NO_SCHEDChristoph Hellwig
The only queues that really can't support a scheduler are those that do not have a gendisk associated with them, and thus can't be used for non-passthrough commands. In addition to those null_blk can optionally set the flag, which is a bad odd. Replace the null_blk usage with BLK_MQ_F_NO_SCHED_BY_DEFAULT to keep the expected semantics and then remove BLK_MQ_F_NO_SCHED as the non-disk queues never call into elevator_init_mq or blk_register_queue which adds the sysfs attributes. 2024-12-01Get rid of 'remove_new' relic from platform driver structLinus Torvalds
The continual trickle of small conversion patches is grating on me, and is really not helping. Just get rid of the 'remove_new' member function, which is just an alias for the plain 'remove', and had a comment to that effect: /* * .remove_new() is a relic from a prototype conversion of .remove(). * New drivers are supposed to implement .remove(). Once all drivers are * converted to not use .remove_new any more, it will be dropped. */ This was just a tree-wide 'sed' script that replaced '.remove_new' with '.remove', with some care taken to turn a subsequent tab into two tabs to make things line up. I did do some minimal manual whitespace adjustment for places that used spaces to line things up. Then I just removed the old (sic) .remove_new member function, and this is the end result. 2024-06-24nvme: split device add from initializationKeith Busch
Combining both creates an ambiguous cleanup scenario for the caller if an error is returned: does the device reference need to be dropped or did the error occur before the device was initialized? If an error occurs after the device is added, then the existing cleanup routines will leak memory. Furthermore, the nvme core is taking it upon itself to free the device's kobj name under certain conditions rather than go through the core device API. We shouldn't be peaking into these implementation details. Split the device initialization from the addition to make it easier to know the error handling actions, fix the existing memory leaks, and stop the device layering violations. 2024-03-08nvme-apple: Convert to platform remove callback returning voidUwe Kleine-König
The .remove() callback for a platform driver returns an int which makes many driver authors wrongly assume it's possible to do error handling by returning an error code. However the value returned is ignored (apart from emitting a warning) and this typically results in resource leaks. To improve here there is a quest to make the remove callback return void. In the first step of this quest all drivers are converted to .remove_new(), which already returns void. Eventually after all drivers are converted, .remove_new() will be renamed to .remove(). Trivially convert this driver from always returning zero in the remove callback to the void returning variant. 2024-02-13block: pass a queue_limits argument to blk_mq_init_queueChristoph Hellwig
Pass a queue_limits to blk_mq_init_queue and apply it if non-NULL. This will allow allocating queues with valid queue limits instead of setting the values one at a time later. Also rename the function to blk_mq_alloc_queue as that is a much better name for a function that allocates a queue and always pass the queuedata argument instead of having a separate version for the extra argument. This is a functional revert of c76b8308e4c9 ("nvme-apple: fix controller shutdown in apple_nvme_disable"). The commit broke suspend/resume since apple_nvme_reset_work() tries to disable the controller on resume. This does not work for the apple NVMe controller since register access only works while the co-processor firmware is running. Disabling the NVMe controller in the shutdown path is also required for shutting the co-processor down. The original code was appropriate for this hardware. Add a comment to prevent a similar breaking changes in the future. 2023-01-10nvme-apple: add NVME_QUIRK_IDENTIFY_CNS quirk to fix regressionHector Martin
From the get-go, this driver and the ANS syslog have been complaining about namespace identification. In 6.2-rc1, commit 811f4de0344d ("nvme: avoid fallback to sequential scan due to transient issues") regressed the driver by no longer allowing fallback to sequential namespace scans, leaving us with no namespaces. It turns out that the real problem is that this controller claiming NVMe 1.1 compat is treating the CNS field as a binary field, as in NVMe 1.0. This already has a quirk, NVME_QUIRK_IDENTIFY_CNS, so set it for the controller to fix all this nonsense (including other errors triggered by other CNS commands). 2022-10-19nvme-apple: don't limit DMA segement sizeRussell King (Oracle)
NVMe uses PRPs for data transfers and has no specific limit for a single DMA segement. Limiting the size will cause problems because the block layer assumes PRP-ish devices using a virt boundary mask don't have a segment limit. And while this is true, we also really need to tell the DMA mapping layer about it, otherwise dma-debug will trip over it. With new API blk_mq_is_reserved_rq() we can tell if a request is from the reserved pool, so stop passing 'reserved' arg. There is actually only a single user of that arg for all the callback implementations, which can use blk_mq_is_reserved_rq() instead. Set the queue dying flag and call blk_mq_exit_queue from del_gendisk for all disks that do not have separately allocated queues, and thus remove the need to call blk_cleanup_queue for them. Rename blk_cleanup_disk to blk_mq_destroy_queue to make it clear that this function is intended only for separately allocated blk-mq queues. This saves an extra queue freeze for devices without a separately allocated queue. 2022-05-02nvme-apple: Add initial Apple SoC NVMe driverSven Peter
Apple SoCs such as the M1 come with an embedded NVMe controller that is not attached to any PCIe bus. Additionally, it doesn't conform to the NVMe specification and requires a bunch of changes to command submission and IOMMU configuration to work.
