The reason for these patches is that I recently encountered a circular dependency problem that came about when I produced some patches to optimise get_order() by rewriting it to use ilog2(). This uses bitops - and on the SH arch asm/bitops.h drags in asm-generic/get_order.h by a circuituous route involving asm/system.h. The main difficulty seems to be asm/system.h. It holds a number of low level bits with no/few dependencies that are commonly used (eg. memory barriers) and a number of bits with more dependencies that aren't used in many places (eg. switch_to()). These patches break asm/system.h up into the following core pieces: (1) asm/barrier.h Move memory barriers here. This already done for MIPS and Alpha. (2) asm/switch_to.h Move switch_to() and related stuff here. (3) asm/exec.h Move arch_align_stack() here. Other process execution related bits could perhaps go here from asm/processor.h. After 2.6.34 changes, __pxa2xx_drv_pcmcia_probe() was replaced by sa1111_pcmcia_add(). That unfortunately means that configure_sockets() is not called, leading to MECR not being set properly, leading to strange crashes. Tested on pxa255+sa1111, I do not have lubbock board nearby. This is important because on PXA3xx, the physical mapping of SMEMC registers differs from the one on PXA2xx. In order to get PCMCIA working on both PXA2xx and PXA320, the PCMCIA driver was adjusted accordingly as well. Also, various places in the kernel had to be patched to use __raw_read/__raw_write. implicit slab.h inclusion from percpu.h percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies. percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is used as the basis of conversion. http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py The script does the followings. * Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used, gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h. * When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered - alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there doesn't seem to be any matching order. * If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the file. The conversion was done in the following steps. 1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400 files. 2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion, some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added inclusions to around 150 files. 3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits from #2 to make sure no file was left behind. 4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed. e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually. 5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as necessary. 6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h. 7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq). * x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config. * powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig * sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig * ia64 SMP allmodconfig * s390 SMP allmodconfig * alpha SMP allmodconfig * um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig 8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as a separate patch and serve as bisection point. Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step 6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch. If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of the specific arch. Instead of requiring PCMCIA socket drivers to call various functions during their (bus) resume and suspend functions, register an own dev_pm_ops for this class. This fixes several suspend/resume bugs seen on db1xxx-ss, and probably on some other socket drivers, too. Move the processor specific initialization (largely resources initialization) out of soc_common_drv_pcmcia_probe() into dedicated sa11xx_drv_pcmcia_probe() and __pxa2xx_drv_pcmcia_probe(). By doing this, we are now able to move the PCMCIA related definitions out of pxa-regs.h and back into pxa2xx_base.c. As a result, remove that reference of _PCMCIA1IO in arch/arm/mach-pxa/viper.c. The Arcom/Eurotech Viper needs some extra care to run. On this board, the PC104 connector is actually wired to the second PCMCIA slot. Therefore, this second socket needs to be enabled, despite not being managed by the PCMCIA code. 2007-10-16pxa2xx PCMCIA timing issue on iPAQ H5550Milan Plzik
Recently I've been trying to get working PCMCIA interface on H5000 ipaq series, using dual PCMCIA sleeve. So far things work correctly, but I had to do one modification to drivers/pcmcia/pxa2xx_base.c to get the interface working with orinoco gold PCMCIA card (wired pcnet_cs ethernet card worked even without this modification). The issue has something to do with assert time on PCMCIA bus, but I'm not really sure what -- I found the working value just by trial&error approach. I'm not sure how is the assert value in pxa2xx_mcxx_asst calculated (I know, simple formula, but the reason why is it calculated that way is not obvious for me), neither that my modification is correct. It just works with iPAQ. The PXA2xx PCMCIA driver was registering a device_driver with the platform_bus_type. Unfortunately, this causes data outside the device_driver structure to be dereferenced as if it were a platform_driver structure, causing an oops. 2005-10-28[PATCH] DRIVER MODEL: Get rid of the obsolete tri-level suspend/resume callbacksRussell King
In PM v1, all devices were called at SUSPEND_DISABLE level. Then all devices were called at SUSPEND_SAVE_STATE level, and finally SUSPEND_POWER_DOWN level. However, with PM v2, to maintain compatibility for platform devices, I arranged for the PM v2 suspend/resume callbacks to call the old PM v1 suspend/resume callbacks three times with each level in order so that existing drivers continued to work. Since this is obsolete infrastructure which is no longer necessary, we can remove it. Here's an (untested) patch to do exactly that.
