2020-11-19rtc: rework rtc_register_device() resource managementBartosz Golaszewski
rtc_register_device() is a managed interface but it doesn't use devres by itself - instead it marks an rtc_device as "registered" and the devres callback for devm_rtc_allocate_device() takes care of resource release. This doesn't correspond with the design behind devres where managed structures should not be aware of being managed. The correct solution here is to register a separate devres callback for unregistering the device. While at it: rename rtc_register_device() to devm_rtc_register_device() and add it to the list of managed interfaces in devres.rst. This way we can avoid any potential confusion of driver developers who may expect there to exist a corresponding unregister function. 2019-10-23compat_ioctl: move rtc handling into drivers/rtc/dev.cArnd Bergmann
We no longer need the rtc compat handling to be in common code, now that all drivers are either moved to the rtc-class framework, or (rarely) exist in drivers/char for architectures without compat mode (m68k, alpha and ia64, respectively). I checked the list of ioctl commands in drivers, and the ones that are not already handled are all compatible, again with the one exception of m68k driver, which implements RTC_PLL_GET and RTC_PLL_SET, but has no compat mode. Unlike earlier versions of this patch, I'm now adding a separate compat_ioctl handler that takes care of RTC_IRQP_READ32/RTC_IRQP_SET32 and treats all other commands as compatible, leaving the native behavior unchanged. The old conversion handler also deals with RTC_EPOCH_READ and RTC_EPOCH_SET, which are not handled in rtc-dev.c but only in a single device driver (rtc-vr41xx), so I'm adding the compat version in the same place. I don't expect other drivers to need those commands in the future. 2018-05-03rtc: vr41xx: remove mktime usageArnd Bergmann
This driver uses mktime() and rtc_time_to_tm() to convert between time values. This works fine on 64-bit kernels over the whole supported range, and the vr41xx chip is a 64-bit MIPS implementation, but it is inconsistent because it doesn't do the same thing on 32-bit kernels that overflow in 2106 or 2038. Changing it to use mktime64/rtc_time64_to_tm() should have no visible impact on vr41xx but gets us closer to removing the 32-bit interfaces. Currently, the IRQs are disabled when the rtc character device is closed. This means that the device needs to stay open to get alarms while the usual use case will open the device, set the alarm and close the device. Keep the alarms functional on character device release. Some rtc drivers use the ioctl method instead of the alarm_irq_enable method for enabling alarm interupts. With the new virtualized RTC rework, its important for drivers to use the alarm_irq_enable instead. This patch converts the drivers that use the AIE ioctl method to use the alarm_irq_enable method. Other ioctl cmds are left untouched. I have not been able to test or even compile most of these drivers. Any help to make sure this change is correct would be appreciated! 2009-01-06rtc: bunch of drivers: fix 'no irq' case handingAnton Vorontsov
This patch fixes a bunch of irq checking misuses. Most drivers were getting irq via platform_get_irq(), which returns -ENXIO or r->start. rtc-cmos.c is special. It is using PNP and platform bindings. Hopefully nobody is using PNP IRQ 0 for RTC. So the changes should be safe. rtc-sh.c is using platform_get_irq, but was storing a result into an unsigned type, then was checking for < 0. This is fixed now. 2006-10-05IRQ: Maintain regs pointer globally rather than passing to IRQ handlersDavid Howells
Maintain a per-CPU global "struct pt_regs *" variable which can be used instead of passing regs around manually through all ~1800 interrupt handlers in the Linux kernel. The regs pointer is used in few places, but it potentially costs both stack space and code to pass it around. On the FRV arch, removing the regs parameter from all the genirq function results in a 20% speed up of the IRQ exit path (ie: from leaving timer_interrupt() to leaving do_IRQ()). Where appropriate, an arch may override the generic storage facility and do something different with the variable. On FRV, for instance, the address is maintained in GR28 at all times inside the kernel as part of general exception handling. Having looked over the code, it appears that the parameter may be handed down through up to twenty or so layers of functions. Consider a USB character device attached to a USB hub, attached to a USB controller that posts its interrupts through a cascaded auxiliary interrupt controller. A character device driver may want to pass regs to the sysrq handler through the input layer which adds another few layers of parameter passing. I've build this code with allyesconfig for x86_64 and i386. I've runtested the main part of the code on FRV and i386, though I can't test most of the drivers. I've also done partial conversion for powerpc and MIPS - these at least compile with minimal configurations. This will affect all archs. Mostly the changes should be relatively easy. Take do_IRQ(), store the regs pointer at the beginning, saving the old one: struct pt_regs *old_regs = set_irq_regs(regs); And put the old one back at the end: set_irq_regs(old_regs); Don't pass regs through to generic_handle_irq() or __do_IRQ(). In timer_interrupt(), this sort of change will be necessary: - update_process_times(user_mode(regs)); - profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING, regs); + update_process_times(user_mode(get_irq_regs())); + profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING); I'd like to move update_process_times()'s use of get_irq_regs() into itself, except that i386, alone of the archs, uses something other than user_mode(). Some notes on the interrupt handling in the drivers: (*) input_dev() is now gone entirely. The regs pointer is no longer stored in the input_dev struct. (*) finish_unlinks() in drivers/usb/host/ohci-q.c needs checking. It does something different depending on whether it's been supplied with a regs pointer or not. (*) Various IRQ handler function pointers have been moved to type irq_handler_t.
