git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/gregkh/staging Pull rtl8812ae staging wireless driver from Greg KH: "Here's a single staging driver for a wireless chipset that has shown up in the SteamBox hardware. It is merged separately from the "main" staging pull request to sync up with the wireless api changes that came in from the networking tree. It's self-contained and works for me and others. Larry will be replacing it with a "real" driver for 3.15, but for now this one is needed" * tag 'staging-3.14-rc1' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/gregkh/staging: staging: r8821ae: Enable build by reverting BROKEN marking staging: r8821ae: Fix build problems Staging: rtl8812ae: disable due to build errors Staging: rtl8821ae: add TODO file Staging: rtl8821ae: removed unused functions and variables Staging: rtl8821ae: rc.c: fix up function prototypes Staging: rtl8812ae: Add Realtek 8821 PCI WIFI driver

git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/mchehab/linux-media Pull media updates from Mauro Carvalho Chehab: - a new jpeg codec driver for Samsung Exynos (jpeg-hw-exynos4) - a new dvb frontend for ds2103 chipset (m88ds2103) - a new sensor driver for Samsung S5K5BAF UXGA (s5k5baf) - new drivers for R-Car VSP1 - a new radio driver: radio-raremono - a new tuner driver for ts2022 chipset (m88ts2022) - the analog part of em28xx is now a separate module that only load/runs if the device is not a pure digital TV device - added a staging driver for bcm2048 radio devices - the omap 2 video driver (omap24xx) was moved to staging. This driver is for an old hardware and uses a deprecated Kernel internal API. If nobody cares enough to fix it, it would be removed on a couple Kernel releases - the sn9c102 driver was moved to staging. This driver was replaced by gspca, and disabled on some distros, as almost all devices are known to work properly with gspca. 2014-01-30zram: promote zram from stagingMinchan Kim
Zram has lived in staging for a LONG LONG time and have been fixed/improved by many contributors so code is clean and stable now. Of course, there are lots of product using zram in real practice. The major TV companys have used zram as swap since two years ago and recently our production team released android smart phone with zram which is used as swap, too and recently Android Kitkat start to use zram for small memory smart phone. And there was a report Google released their ChromeOS with zram, too and cyanogenmod have been used zram long time ago. And I heard some disto have used zram block device for tmpfs. In addition, I saw many report from many other peoples. For example, Lubuntu start to use it. The benefit of zram is very clear. With my experience, one of the benefit was to remove jitter of video application with backgroud memory pressure. It would be effect of efficient memory usage by compression but more issue is whether swap is there or not in the system. Recent mobile platforms have used JAVA so there are many anonymous pages. But embedded system normally are reluctant to use eMMC or SDCard as swap because there is wear-leveling and latency issues so if we do not use swap, it means we can't reclaim anoymous pages and at last, we could encounter OOM kill. :( Although we have real storage as swap, it was a problem, too. Because it sometime ends up making system very unresponsible caused by slow swap storage performance. Quote from Luigi on Google "Since Chrome OS was mentioned: the main reason why we don't use swap to a disk (rotating or SSD) is because it doesn't degrade gracefully and leads to a bad interactive experience. Generally we prefer to manage RAM at a higher level, by transparently killing and restarting processes. But we noticed that zram is fast enough to be competitive with the latter, and it lets us make more efficient use of the available RAM. " and he announced. http://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-mm/msg57717.html Other uses case is to use zram for block device. Zram is block device so anyone can format the block device and mount on it so some guys on the internet start zram as /var/tmp. http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-838198-start-0.html Let's promote zram and enhance/maintain it instead of removing. 2014-01-30zsmalloc: move it under mmMinchan Kim
This patch moves zsmalloc under mm directory. Before that, description will explain why we have needed custom allocator. Zsmalloc is a new slab-based memory allocator for storing compressed pages. It is designed for low fragmentation and high allocation success rate on large object, but <= PAGE_SIZE allocations. zsmalloc differs from the kernel slab allocator in two primary ways to achieve these design goals. zsmalloc never requires high order page allocations to back slabs, or "size classes" in zsmalloc terms. Instead it allows multiple single-order pages to be stitched together into a "zspage" which backs the slab. This allows for higher allocation success rate under memory pressure. Also, zsmalloc allows objects to span page boundaries within the zspage. This allows for lower fragmentation than could be had with the kernel slab allocator for objects between PAGE_SIZE/2 and PAGE_SIZE. With the kernel slab allocator, if a page compresses to 60% of it original size, the memory savings gained through compression is lost in fragmentation because another object of the same size can't be stored in the leftover space. This ability to span pages results in zsmalloc allocations not being directly addressable by the user. The user is given an non-dereferencable handle in response to an allocation request. That handle must be mapped, using zs_map_object(), which returns a pointer to the mapped region that can be used. The mapping is necessary since the object data may reside in two different noncontigious pages. The zsmalloc fulfills the allocation needs for zram perfectly [sjenning@linux.vnet.ibm.com: borrow Seth's quote] Signed-off-by: Minchan Kim <minchan@kernel.org> Acked-by: Nitin Gupta <ngupta@vflare.org> Reviewed-by: Konrad Rzeszutek Wilk <konrad.wilk@oracle.com> Cc: Bob Liu <bob.liu@oracle.com> Cc: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@linuxfoundation.org> Cc: Hugh Dickins <hughd@google.com> Cc: Jens Axboe <axboe@kernel.dk> Cc: Luigi Semenzato <semenzato@google.com> Cc: Mel Gorman <mgorman@suse.de> Cc: Pekka Enberg <penberg@kernel.org> Cc: Rik van Riel <riel@redhat.com> Cc: Seth Jennings <sjenning@linux.vnet.ibm.com> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@linux-foundation.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>

Pull core block IO changes from Jens Axboe: "The major piece in here is the immutable bio_ve series from Kent, the rest is fairly minor. It was supposed to go in last round, but various issues pushed it to this release instead. The pull request contains: - Various smaller blk-mq fixes from different folks. Nothing major here, just minor fixes and cleanups. - Fix for a memory leak in the error path in the block ioctl code from Christian Engelmayer. - Header export fix from CaiZhiyong. - Finally the immutable biovec changes from Kent Overstreet. This enables some nice future work on making arbitrarily sized bios possible, and splitting more efficient. Related fixes to immutable bio_vecs: - dm-cache immutable fixup from Mike Snitzer. - btrfs immutable fixup from Muthu Kumar. - bio-integrity fix from Nic Bellinger, which is also going to stable" * 'for-3.14/core' of git://git.kernel.dk/linux-block: (44 commits) xtensa: fixup simdisk driver to work with immutable bio_vecs block/blk-mq-cpu.c: use hotcpu_notifier() blk-mq: for_each_* macro correctness block: Fix memory leak in rw_copy_check_uvector() handling bio-integrity: Fix bio_integrity_verify segment start bug block: remove unrelated header files and export symbol blk-mq: uses page->list incorrectly blk-mq: use __smp_call_function_single directly btrfs: fix missing increment of bi_remaining Revert "block: Warn and free bio if bi_end_io is not set" block: Warn and free bio if bi_end_io is not set blk-mq: fix initializing request's start time block: blk-mq: don't export blk_mq_free_queue() block: blk-mq: make blk_sync_queue support mq block: blk-mq: support draining mq queue dm cache: increment bi_remaining when bi_end_io is restored block: fixup for generic bio chaining block: Really silence spurious compiler warnings block: Silence spurious compiler warnings block: Kill bio_pair_split() ...

2014-01-24Merge tag 'pm+acpi-3.14-rc1' of ↵Linus Torvalds
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/rafael/linux-pm Pull ACPI and power management updates from Rafael Wysocki: "As far as the number of commits goes, the top spot belongs to ACPI this time with cpufreq in the second position and a handful of PM core, PNP and cpuidle updates. They are fixes and cleanups mostly, as usual, with a couple of new features in the mix. The most visible change is probably that we will create struct acpi_device objects (visible in sysfs) for all devices represented in the ACPI tables regardless of their status and there will be a new sysfs attribute under those objects allowing user space to check that status via _STA. Consequently, ACPI device eject or generally hot-removal will not delete those objects, unless the table containing the corresponding namespace nodes is unloaded, which is extremely rare. Also ACPI container hotplug will be handled quite a bit differently and cpufreq will support CPU boost ("turbo") generically and not only in the acpi-cpufreq driver. Specifics: - ACPI core changes to make it create a struct acpi_device object for every device represented in the ACPI tables during all namespace scans regardless of the current status of that device. In accordance with this, ACPI hotplug operations will not delete those objects, unless the underlying ACPI tables go away. - On top of the above, new sysfs attribute for ACPI device objects allowing user space to check device status by triggering the execution of _STA for its ACPI object. From Srinivas Pandruvada. - ACPI core hotplug changes reducing code duplication, integrating the PCI root hotplug with the core and reworking container hotplug. - ACPI core simplifications making it use ACPI_COMPANION() in the code "glueing" ACPI device objects to "physical" devices. - ACPICA update to upstream version 20131218. This adds support for the DBG2 and PCCT tables to ACPICA, fixes some bugs and improves debug facilities. From Bob Moore, Lv Zheng and Betty Dall. - Init code change to carry out the early ACPI initialization earlier. That should allow us to use ACPI during the timekeeping initialization and possibly to simplify the EFI initialization too. From Chun-Yi Lee. - Clenups of the inclusions of ACPI headers in many places all over from Lv Zheng and Rashika Kheria (work in progress). - New helper for ACPI _DSM execution and rework of the code in drivers that uses _DSM to execute it via the new helper. There's a new driver (rts5208), which ends up making us adding more lines than removing, but overall there was lots of work toward moving code out of here, which was good All of this has been in linux-next with no reported issues" * tag 'staging-3.14-rc1' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/gregkh/staging: (1084 commits) lustre: delete linux/lustre_debug.h staging: lustre: remove some unused debug macros usb: dwc2: move device tree bindings doc to correct place staging: vt6656: sparse fixes: iwctl_giwgenie use memcpy. staging: vt6656: sparse fixes: iwctl_siwgenie use memcpy. staging: vt6656: sparse fixes ethtool_ioctl Use struct ifreq * staging: vt6656: sparse fixes: dpc.c missing dpc.h staging: lustre: libcfs_debug: small whitespace cleanups staging: lustre: libcfs_debug.h: remove extra blank lines staging: lustre: libcfs_debug.h: Align backslashes in macros staging: lustre: libcfs_debug.h: align define values staging: tidspbridge: adjust error return code (bugfix) Staging: rts5139: rts51x_card: fixed style issues staging: wlags49_h2: Fix "do not use C99 //" in wl_cs.h, wl_enc.h wl_main.h and wl_wext.h Staging: rtl8188eu: Fixed "foo * bar" related coding style issues Staging: rtl8188eu: Fixed required spaces after ',' and around '=' and '==' staging: vt6655: Fix memory leak in wpa_ioctl() imx-drm: parallel-display: honor 'native-mode' property when selecting video mode from DT staging: drm/imx: don't drop crtc offsets when doing pageflip staging: drm/imx: handle framebuffer offsets correctly ...

2014-01-13lustre: delete linux/lustre_debug.hGreg Kroah-Hartman
There was only one macro in here, LL_CDEBUG_PAGE(). So open code it in the 2 places it was used so that the developer seeing it can see just how horrid it really is, and they can remove it as I doubt it really is ever needed anymore. But for now, keep the same functionality and remove a whole file (with a duplicate name of other files in the lustre repo, another confusion...)
