2021-10-22scsi: add a scsi_alloc_request helperChristoph Hellwig
Add a new helper that calls blk_get_request and initializes the scsi_request to avoid the indirect call through ->.initialize_rq_fn. Note that this makes the pktcdvd driver depend on the SCSI core, but given that only SCSI devices support SCSI passthrough requests that is not a functional change. 2021-03-24scsi: target: pscsi: Avoid OOM in pscsi_map_sg()Martin Wilck
pscsi_map_sg() uses the variable nr_pages as a hint for bio_kmalloc() how many vector elements to allocate. If nr_pages is < BIO_MAX_PAGES, it will be reset to 0 after successful allocation of the bio. If bio_add_pc_page() fails later for whatever reason, pscsi_map_sg() tries to allocate another bio, passing nr_vecs = 0. This causes bio_add_pc_page() to fail immediately in the next call. pci_map_sg() continues to allocate zero-length bios until memory is exhausted and the kernel crashes with OOM. This can be easily observed by exporting a SATA DVD drive via pscsi. The target crashes as soon as the client tries to access the DVD LUN. In the case I analyzed, bio_add_pc_page() would fail because the DVD device's max_sectors_kb (128) was exceeded. Avoid this by simply not resetting nr_pages to 0 after allocating the bio. This way, the client receives an I/O error when it tries to send requests exceeding the devices max_sectors_kb, and eventually gets it right. The client must still limit max_sectors_kb e.g. by an udev rule if (like in my case) the driver doesn't report valid block limits, otherwise it encounters I/O errors. Now that the hd_struct always has a block device attached to it, there is no need for having two size field that just get out of sync. Additionally the field in hd_struct did not use proper serialization, possibly allowing for torn writes. By only using the block_device field this problem also gets fixed. In preparation for supporting user provided vendor strings, add an extra byte to the vendor, model and revision arrays in struct t10_wwn. This ensures that the full INQUIRY data can be carried in the arrays along with a null-terminator. Change a number of array readers and writers so that they account for explicit null-termination: - The pscsi_set_inquiry_info() and emulate_model_alias_store() codepaths don't currently explicitly null-terminate; fix this. - Existing t10_wwn field dumps use for-loops which step over null-terminators for right-padding. + Use printf with width specifiers instead. 2018-05-18scsi: target: transport should handle st FM/EOM/ILI readsLee Duncan
When a tape drive is exported via LIO using the pscsi module, a read that requests more bytes per block than the tape can supply returns an empty buffer. This is because the pscsi pass-through target module sees the "ILI" illegal length bit set and thinks there is no reason to return the data. This is a long-standing transport issue, since it assumes that no data need be returned under a check condition, which isn't always the case for tape. Add in a check for tape reads with the ILI, EOM, or FM bits set, with a sense code of NO_SENSE, treating such cases as if the read succeeded. The layered tape driver then "does the right thing" when it gets such a response. Commit caa4b02476e3(blk-map: call blk_queue_bounce from blk_rq_append_bio) moves blk_queue_bounce() into blk_rq_append_bio(), but don't consider the fact that the bounced bio becomes invisible to caller since the parameter type is 'struct bio *'. Make it a pointer to a pointer to a bio, so the caller sees the right bio also after a bounce. This patch performs the pscsi_transport_complete operations from pscsi_req_done. It looks like the only difference the transport_complete callout provides is that it is called under t_state_lock which seems to only be needed for the SCF_TRANSPORT_TASK_SENSE bit handling. We can now use transport_copy_sense_to_cmd to handle the se_cmd sense bits, and we can then drop the code where we have to copy the request info to the pscsi_plugin_task for transport_complete use. Add an .initialize_rq_fn() callback function to the block drivers that need it. Keep the scsi_req_init() call in ide_prep_sense() because it follows a blk_rq_init() call. 2017-06-09block: introduce new block status code typeChristoph Hellwig
Currently we use nornal Linux errno values in the block layer, and while we accept any error a few have overloaded magic meanings. This patch instead introduces a new blk_status_t value that holds block layer specific status codes and explicitly explains their meaning. Helpers to convert from and to the previous special meanings are provided for now, but I suspect we want to get rid of them in the long run - those drivers that have a errno input (e.g. networking) usually get errnos that don't know about the special block layer overloads, and similarly returning them to userspace will usually return somethings that strictly speaking isn't correct for file system operations, but that's left as an exercise for later. For now the set of errors is a very limited set that closely corresponds to the previous overloaded errno values, but there is some low hanging fruite to improve it. blk_status_t (ab)uses the sparse __bitwise annotations to allow for sparse typechecking, so that we can easily catch places passing the wrong values. This passes on the scsi_cmnd result field to users of passthrough requests. Currently we abuse req->errors for this purpose, but that field will go away in its current form. Note that the old IDE code abuses the errors field in very creative ways and stores all kinds of different values in it. I didn't dare to touch this magic, so the abuses are brought forward 1:1. This patch allows passthrough backends to use the core/base LIO ALUA setup and state checks, but still handle the execution of commands. This will allow the target_core_user module to execute STPG and RTPG in userspace, and not have to duplicate the ALUA state checks, path information (needed so we can check if command is executable on specific paths) and setup (rtslib sets/updates the configfs ALUA interface like it does for iblock or file). For STPG, the target_core_user userspace daemon, tcmu-runner will still execute the STPG, and to update the core/base LIO state it will use the existing configfs interface. The following fixes a divide by zero OOPs with TYPE_TAPE due to pscsi_tape_read_blocksize() failing causing a zero sd->sector_size being propigated up via dev_attrib.hw_block_size. It also fixes another long-standing bug where TYPE_TAPE and TYPE_MEDIMUM_CHANGER where using pscsi_create_type_other(), which does not call scsi_device_get() to take the device reference. Instead, rename pscsi_create_type_rom() to pscsi_create_type_nondisk() and use it for all cases. Finally, also drop a dump_stack() in pscsi_get_blocks() for non TYPE_DISK, which in modern target-core can get invoked via target_sense_desc_format() during CHECK_CONDITION. Instead of keeping two levels of indirection for requests types, fold it all into the operations. The little caveat here is that previously cmd_type only applied to struct request, while the request and bio op fields were set to plain REQ_OP_READ/WRITE even for passthrough operations. Instead this patch adds new REQ_OP_* for SCSI passthrough and driver private requests, althought it has to add two for each so that we can communicate the data in/out nature of the request. 2015-07-29block: add a bi_error field to struct bioChristoph Hellwig
Currently we have two different ways to signal an I/O error on a BIO: (1) by clearing the BIO_UPTODATE flag (2) by returning a Linux errno value to the bi_end_io callback The first one has the drawback of only communicating a single possible error (-EIO), and the second one has the drawback of not beeing persistent when bios are queued up, and are not passed along from child to parent bio in the ever more popular chaining scenario. Having both mechanisms available has the additional drawback of utterly confusing driver authors and introducing bugs where various I/O submitters only deal with one of them, and the others have to add boilerplate code to deal with both kinds of error returns. So add a new bi_error field to store an errno value directly in struct bio and remove the existing mechanisms to clean all this up.
