For USB2 LPM, the LPM is already disabled during port suspend. For USB3 LPM, port won't transit to U1/U2 when it's already suspended in U3, hence disabling LPM is only needed for ports that are not suspended. 2024-12-23usb: fix reference leak in usb_new_device()Ma Ke
When device_add(&udev->dev) succeeds and a later call fails, usb_new_device() does not properly call device_del(). As comment of device_add() says, 'if device_add() succeeds, you should call device_del() when you want to get rid of it. If device_add() has not succeeded, use only put_device() to drop the reference count'. Found by code review. 2024-12-04usb: core: hcd: only check primary hcd skip_phy_initializationXu Yang
Before commit 53a2d95df836 ("usb: core: add phy notify connect and disconnect"), phy initialization will be skipped even when shared hcd doesn't set skip_phy_initialization flag. However, the situation is changed after the commit. The hcd.c will initialize phy when add shared hcd. This behavior is unexpected for some platforms which will handle phy initialization by themselves. To avoid the issue, this will only check skip_phy_initialization flag of primary hcd since shared hcd normally follow primary hcd setting. 2024-11-14USB: make to_usb_device_driver() use container_of_const()Greg Kroah-Hartman
Turns out that we have some const pointers being passed to to_usb_device_driver() but were not catching this. Change the macro to properly propagate the const-ness of the pointer so that we will notice when we try to write to memory that we shouldn't be writing to. This requires fixing up the usb_driver_applicable() function as well, because it can handle a const * to struct usb_driver. 2024-11-14USB: properly lock dynamic id list when showing an idGreg Kroah-Hartman
When walking the list of dynamic ids for a driver, no lock was being held, which meant that an id could be removed or added while the list was being iterated. Fix this up by properly grabing the lock while we walk the list. Reported-by: Alan Stern <stern@rowland.harvard.edu> Cc: linux-usb@vger.kernel.org Link: https://lore.kernel.org/r/2024111324-tubby-facecloth-d4a0@gregkh Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@linuxfoundation.org>
2024-11-14USB: make single lock for all usb dynamic id listsGreg Kroah-Hartman
There are a number of places where we accidentally pass in a constant structure to later cast it off to a dynamic one, and then attempt to grab a lock on it, which is not a good idea. To help resolve this, move the dynamic id lock out of the dynamic id structure for the driver and into one single lock for all USB dynamic ids. As this lock should never have any real contention (it's only every accessed when a device is added or removed, which is always serialized) there should not be any difference except for some memory savings. Note, this just converts the existing use of the dynamic id lock to the new static lock, there is one place that is accessing the dynamic id list without grabbing the lock, that will be fixed up in a follow-on change. 2024-10-29usb: acpi: fix boot hang due to early incorrect 'tunneled' USB3 device linksMathias Nyman
Fix a boot hang issue triggered when a USB3 device is incorrectly assumed to be tunneled over USB4, thus attempting to create a device link between the USB3 "consumer" device and the USB4 "supplier" Host Interface before the USB4 side is properly bound to a driver. This could happen if xhci isn't capable of detecting tunneled devices, but ACPI tables contain all info needed to assume device is tunneled. i.e. udev->tunnel_mode == USB_LINK_UNKNOWN. It turns out that even for actual tunneled USB3 devices it can't be assumed that the thunderbolt driver providing the tunnel is loaded before the tunneled USB3 device is created. The tunnel can be created by BIOS and remain in use by thunderbolt/USB4 host driver once it loads. Solve this by making the device link "stateless", which doesn't create a driver presence order dependency between the supplier and consumer drivers. It still guarantees correct suspend/resume and shutdown ordering. cc: Mario Limonciello <mario.limonciello@amd.com> Fixes: f1bfb4a6fed6 ("usb: acpi: add device link between tunneled USB3 device and USB4 Host Interface") Tested-by: Harry Wentland <harry.wentland@amd.com> Signed-off-by: Mathias Nyman <mathias.nyman@linux.intel.com> Reviewed-by: Mika Westerberg <mika.westerberg@linux.intel.com> Tested-by: Mario Limonciello <mario.limonciello@amd.com> Link: https://lore.kernel.org/r/20241024131355.3836538-1-mathias.nyman@linux.intel.com Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@linuxfoundation.org>
2024-10-17usb: require FMODE_WRITE for usbdev_mmap()Jann Horn
usbdev_mmap() creates VMAs which can only be used through usbdev_do_ioctl(), which requires FMODE_WRITE; so usbdev_mmap() is only useful with FMODE_WRITE. On typical Linux systems, files at /dev/bus/usb/*/* are mode 0664, so UIDs without any special privileges can't use usbdev_do_ioctl(), but they can still execute the usbdev_mmap() codepath. Check for FMODE_WRITE in usbdev_mmap() to reduce attack surface a little bit. 2024-09-03usb: acpi: add device link between tunneled USB3 device and USB4 Host InterfaceMathias Nyman
Describe the power management relationship between a tunneled USB3 device and the tunnel providing USB4 host with a device link as the relationship between them is not evident from normal device hierarchy. Tunneling capable ports have an ACPI _DSD object pointing to the USB4 Host Interface that is used to establish USB3 3.x tunnels Set the link directly between tunneled USB3 devices and USB4 Host Interface to ensure that the USB4 host can runtime suspend if no tunneled USB 3.x devices exist. Current Thunderbolt code sets a link between USB4 Host Interface and USB3 xHCI host which prevents USB4 Host Interface from runtime suspending even if the USB3 host is only serving native USB devices. See commit b2be2b05cf3b ("thunderbolt: Create device links from ACPI description") for details. As the device link is only set for USB3 devices that are already tunneled we know that USB4 Host Interface exists and is bound to its driver. 2024-07-03USB: core: Fix duplicate endpoint bug by clearing reserved bits in the ↵Alan Stern
descriptor Syzbot has identified a bug in usbcore (see the Closes: tag below) caused by our assumption that the reserved bits in an endpoint descriptor's bEndpointAddress field will always be 0. As a result of the bug, the endpoint_is_duplicate() routine in config.c (and possibly other routines as well) may believe that two descriptors are for distinct endpoints, even though they have the same direction and endpoint number. This can lead to confusion, including the bug identified by syzbot (two descriptors with matching endpoint numbers and directions, where one was interrupt and the other was bulk). To fix the bug, we will clear the reserved bits in bEndpointAddress when we parse the descriptor. (Note that both the USB-2.0 and USB-3.1 specs say these bits are "Reserved, reset to zero".) This requires us to make a copy of the descriptor earlier in usb_parse_endpoint() and use the copy instead of the original when checking for duplicates. 2024-07-03driver core: have match() callback in struct bus_type take a const *Greg Kroah-Hartman
In the match() callback, the struct device_driver * should not be changed, so change the function callback to be a const *. This is one step of many towards making the driver core safe to have struct device_driver in read-only memory. Because the match() callback is in all busses, all busses are modified to handle this properly. This does entail switching some container_of() calls to container_of_const() to properly handle the constant *. For some busses, like PCI and USB and HV, the const * is cast away in the match callback as those busses do want to modify those structures at this point in time (they have a local lock in the driver structure.) That will have to be changed in the future if they wish to have their struct device * in read-only-memory. Cc: Rafael J. After commit 8fea0c8fda30 ("usb: core: hcd: Convert from tasklet to BH workqueue"), usb_giveback_urb_bh() runs in the BH workqueue with interrupts enabled. Thus, the remote coverage collection section in usb_giveback_urb_bh()-> __usb_hcd_giveback_urb() might be interrupted, and the interrupt handler might invoke __usb_hcd_giveback_urb() again. This breaks KCOV, as it does not support nested remote coverage collection sections within the same context (neither in task nor in softirq). Update kcov_remote_start/stop_usb_softirq() to disable interrupts for the duration of the coverage collection section to avoid nested sections in the softirq context (in addition to such in the task context, which are already handled). Reading bEndpointAddress the spec tells is that: b7 is direction, which must be ignored b6:4 are reserved which are to be set to zero b3:0 are the endpoint address In order to be backwards compatible with possible future versions of USB we have to be ready with devices using those bits. That means that we also have to ignore them like we do with the direction bit. In consequence the only illegal address you can encoding in four bits is endpoint zero, for which no descriptor must exist. Hence the check for exceeding the upper limit on endpoint addresses is removed. 2024-04-30usb: Fix regression caused by invalid ep0 maxpacket in virtual SuperSpeed deviceAlan Stern
A virtual SuperSpeed device in the FreeBSD BVCP package (https://bhyve.npulse.net/) presents an invalid ep0 maxpacket size of 256. It stopped working with Linux following a recent commit because now we check these sizes more carefully than before. Fix this regression by using the bMaxpacketSize0 value in the device descriptor for SuperSpeed or faster devices, even if it is invalid. This is a very simple-minded change; we might want to check more carefully for values that actually make some sense (for instance, no smaller than 64). 2024-04-23USB: core: Fix access violation during port device removalAlan Stern
Testing with KASAN and syzkaller revealed a bug in port.c:disable_store(): usb_hub_to_struct_hub() can return NULL if the hub that the port belongs to is concurrently removed, but the function does not check for this possibility before dereferencing the returned value. It turns out that the first dereference is unnecessary, since hub->intfdev is the parent of the port device, so it can be changed easily. Adding a check for hub == NULL prevents further problems. The same bug exists in the disable_show() routine, and it can be fixed the same way. This patch prepares onboad_hub to support non-hub devices by renaming the driver files and their content, the headers and their references. The comments and descriptions have been slightly modified to keep coherence and account for the specific cases that only affect onboard hubs (e.g. peer-hub). The "hub" variables in functions where "dev" (and similar names) variables already exist have been renamed to onboard_dev for clarity, which adds a few lines in cases where more than 80 characters are used. 2024-03-26USB: core: Fix deadlock in port "disable" sysfs attributeAlan Stern
The show and store callback routines for the "disable" sysfs attribute file in port.c acquire the device lock for the port's parent hub device. This can cause problems if another process has locked the hub to remove it or change its configuration: Removing the hub or changing its configuration requires the hub interface to be removed, which requires the port device to be removed, and device_del() waits until all outstanding sysfs attribute callbacks for the ports have returned. The lock can't be released until then. But the disable_show() or disable_store() routine can't return until after it has acquired the lock. The resulting deadlock can be avoided by calling sysfs_break_active_protection(). This will cause the sysfs core not to wait for the attribute's callback routine to return, allowing the removal to proceed. The disadvantage is that after making this call, there is no guarantee that the hub structure won't be deallocated at any moment. To prevent this, we have to acquire a reference to it first by calling hub_get(). 2024-03-26USB: core: Fix deadlock in usb_deauthorize_interface()Alan Stern
Among the attribute file callback routines in drivers/usb/core/sysfs.c, the interface_authorized_store() function is the only one which acquires a device lock on an ancestor device: It calls usb_deauthorize_interface(), which locks the interface's parent USB device. The will lead to deadlock if another process already owns that lock and tries to remove the interface, whether through a configuration change or because the device has been disconnected. As part of the removal procedure, device_del() waits for all ongoing sysfs attribute callbacks to complete. But usb_deauthorize_interface() can't complete until the device lock has been released, and the lock won't be released until the removal has finished. The mechanism provided by sysfs to prevent this kind of deadlock is to use the sysfs_break_active_protection() function, which tells sysfs not to wait for the attribute callback. 2024-03-06usb: Clarify expected behavior of dev_bin_attrs_are_visible()Elbert Mai
The commit "usb: Export BOS descriptor to sysfs" added a binary attribute group to sysfs. It doesn't check if the descriptors attribute should be visible, which is by design and not an oversight. Update a comment so that it better explains this in the dev_bin_attrs_are_visible() function. 2024-03-05usb: core: Set connect_type of ports based on DT nodeStephen Boyd
When a USB hub is described in DT, such as any device that matches the onboard-hub driver, the connect_type is set to "unknown" or USB_PORT_CONNECT_TYPE_UNKNOWN. This makes any device plugged into that USB port report their 'removable' device attribute as "unknown". ChromeOS userspace would like to know if the USB device is actually removable or not so that security policies can be applied. Improve the connect_type attribute for ports, and in turn the removable attribute for USB devices, by looking for child devices with a reg property or an OF graph when the device is described in DT. If the graph exists, endpoints that are connected to a remote node must be something like a usb-{a,b,c}-connector compatible node, or an intermediate node like a redriver, and not a hardwired USB device on the board. Set the connect_type to USB_PORT_CONNECT_TYPE_HOT_PLUG in this case because the device is going to be plugged in. Set the connect_type to USB_PORT_CONNECT_TYPE_HARD_WIRED if there's a child node for the port like 'device@2' for port2. Set the connect_type to USB_PORT_NOT_USED if there isn't an endpoint or child node corresponding to the port number. To make sure things don't change, only set the port to not used if there are child nodes. This way an onboard hub connect_type doesn't change until ports are added or child nodes are added to describe hardwired devices. It's assumed that all ports or no ports will be described for a device. 2024-03-05usb: port: Don't try to peer unused USB ports based on locationMathias Nyman
Unused USB ports may have bogus location data in ACPI PLD tables. This causes port peering failures as these unused USB2 and USB3 ports location may match. Due to these failures the driver prints a "usb: port power management may be unreliable" warning, and unnecessarily blocks port power off during runtime suspend. This was debugged on a couple DELL systems where the unused ports all returned zeroes in their location data. Similar bugreports exist for other systems. Don't try to peer or match ports that have connect type set to USB_PORT_NOT_USED. 2024-03-05usb: usb-acpi: Set port connect type of not connectable ports correctlyMathias Nyman
Ports with _UPC (USB Port Capability) ACPI objects stating they are "not connectable" are not wired to any connector or internal device. They only exist inside the host controller. These ports may not have an ACPI _PLD (Physical Location of Device) object. Rework the code so that _UPC is read even if _PLD does not exist, and make sure the port->connect_type is set to "USB_PORT_NOT_USED" instead of "USB_PORT_CONNECT_TYPE_UNKNOWN". No bugs or known issues are reported due to possibly not parsing _UPC, and thus leaving the port connect type as "unknown" instead of "not used". Nice to have this fixed but no need to add it to stable kernels, or urgency to get it upstream. 2024-03-05usb: Export BOS descriptor to sysfsElbert Mai
Motivation ---------- The binary device object store (BOS) of a USB device consists of the BOS descriptor followed by a set of device capability descriptors. One that is of interest to users is the platform descriptor. This contains a 128-bit UUID and arbitrary data, and it allows parties outside of USB-IF to add additional metadata about a USB device in a standards-compliant manner. Notable examples include the WebUSB and Microsoft OS 2.0 descriptors. The kernel already retrieves and caches the BOS from USB devices if its bcdUSB is >= 0x0201. Because the BOS is flexible and extensible, we export the entire BOS to sysfs so users can retrieve whatever device capabilities they desire, without requiring USB I/O or elevated permissions. Implementation -------------- Add bos_descriptors attribute to sysfs. This is a binary file and it works the same way as the existing descriptors attribute. The file exists only if the BOS is present in the USB device. Also create a binary attribute group, so the driver core can handle the creation of both the descriptors and bos_descriptors attributes in sysfs.
