2025-03-14usb: typec: tcpm: fix state transition for SNK_WAIT_CAPABILITIES state in ↵Amit Sunil Dhamne
run_state_machine() A subtle error got introduced while manually fixing merge conflict in tcpm.c for commit 85c4efbe6088 ("Merge v6.12-rc6 into usb-next"). As a result of this error, the next state is unconditionally set to SNK_WAIT_CAPABILITIES_TIMEOUT while handling SNK_WAIT_CAPABILITIES state in run_state_machine(...). Fix this by setting new state of TCPM state machine to `upcoming_state` (that is set to different values based on conditions). 2025-02-14usb: typec: tcpm: PSSourceOffTimer timeout in PR_Swap enters ERROR_RECOVERYJos Wang
As PD2.0 spec ("6.5.6.2 PSSourceOffTimer"),the PSSourceOffTimer is used by the Policy Engine in Dual-Role Power device that is currently acting as a Sink to timeout on a PS_RDY Message during a Power Role Swap sequence. This condition leads to a Hard Reset for USB Type-A and Type-B Plugs and Error Recovery for Type-C plugs and return to USB Default Operation. Therefore, after PSSourceOffTimer timeout, the tcpm state machine should switch from PR_SWAP_SNK_SRC_SINK_OFF to ERROR_RECOVERY. 2025-01-17usb: typec: tcpci: Prevent Sink disconnection before vPpsShutdown in SPR PPSKyle Tso
The Source can drop its output voltage to the minimum of the requested PPS APDO voltage range when it is in Current Limit Mode. If this voltage falls within the range of vPpsShutdown, the Source initiates a Hard Reset and discharges Vbus. However, currently the Sink may disconnect before the voltage reaches vPpsShutdown, leading to unexpected behavior. Prevent premature disconnection by setting the Sink's disconnect threshold to the minimum vPpsShutdown value. Additionally, consider the voltage drop due to IR drop when calculating the appropriate threshold. This ensures a robust and reliable interaction between the Source and Sink during SPR PPS Current Limit Mode operation. Replace ternary (condition ? "enable" : "disable") syntax with helpers from string_choices.h because: 1. Simple function call with one argument is easier to read. Ternary operator has three arguments and with wrapping might lead to quite long code. 2. Is slightly shorter thus also easier to read. 3. It brings uniformity in the text - same string. 4. Allows deduping by the linker, which results in a smaller binary file. 2025-01-08treewide: Introduce kthread_run_worker[_on_cpu]()Frederic Weisbecker
kthread_create() creates a kthread without running it yet. kthread_run() creates a kthread and runs it. On the other hand, kthread_create_worker() creates a kthread worker and runs it. This difference in behaviours is confusing. Also there is no way to create a kthread worker and affine it using kthread_bind_mask() or kthread_affine_preferred() before starting it. Consolidate the behaviours and introduce kthread_run_worker[_on_cpu]() that behaves just like kthread_run(). kthread_create_worker[_on_cpu]() will now only create a kthread worker without starting it. 2024-12-24usb: typec: tcpm: Add support for parsing pd-revision DT propertyAmit Sunil Dhamne
Add support for parsing "pd-revision" DT property in TCPM and store PD revision and version supported by the Type-C connnector. It should be noted that the PD revision is the maximum possible revision supported by the port. This is different from the 2 bit revision set in PD msg headers. The purpose of the 2 bit revision value is to negotiate between Rev 2.X & 3.X spec rev as part of contract negotiation, while this is used for Get_Revision AMS after a contract is in place. 2024-11-16usb: typec: tcpm: Add support for sink-bc12-completion-time-ms DT propertyAmit Sunil Dhamne
Add support for parsing DT time property "sink-bc12-completion-time-ms". This timer is used to relax the PD state machine during Sink attach to allow completion of Battery Charging (BC1.2) charger type detection in TCPC before PD negotiations. BC1.2 detection is a hardware mechanism to detect charger port type that is run by some controllers (such as "maxim,max33359") in parallel to Type-C connection state machines. This is to ensure that BC1.2 completes before PD is enabled as running BC1.2 in parallel with PD negotiation results in delays violating timer constraints in PD spec. This is an optional timer and will not add any delay unless explicitly set. self-powered devices PD3.1 spec ("8.3.3.3.3 PE_SNK_Wait_for_Capabilities State") mandates that the policy engine perform a hard reset when SinkWaitCapTimer expires. Instead the code explicitly does a GET_SOURCE_CAP when the timer expires as part of SNK_WAIT_CAPABILITIES_TIMEOUT. Due to this the following compliance test failures are reported by the compliance tester (added excerpts from the PD Test Spec): * COMMON.PROC.PD.2#1: The Tester receives a Get_Source_Cap Message from the UUT. This message is valid except the following conditions: [COMMON.PROC.PD.2#1] a. The check fails if the UUT sends this message before the Tester has established an Explicit Contract ... * TEST.PD.PROT.SNK.4: ... 4. The check fails if the UUT does not send a Hard Reset between tTypeCSinkWaitCap min and max. [TEST.PD.PROT.SNK.4#1] The delay is between the VBUS present vSafe5V min and the time of the first bit of Preamble of the Hard Reset sent by the UUT. For the purpose of interoperability, restrict the quirk introduced in https://lore.kernel.org/all/20240523171806.223727-1-sebastian.reichel@collabora.com/ to only non self-powered devices as battery powered devices will not have the issue mentioned in that commit. 2024-09-03power: supply: Change usb_types from an array into a bitmaskHans de Goede
The bit_types array just hold a list of valid enum power_supply_usb_type values which map to 0 - 9. This can easily be represented as a bitmap. This reduces the size of struct power_supply_desc and further reduces the data section size by drivers no longer needing to store the array. This also unifies how usb_types are handled with charge_behaviours, which allows power_supply_show_usb_type() to be removed. There is a confusing pattern in the kernel to use a variable named 'timeout' to store the result of wait_for_completion_timeout() causing patterns like: timeout = wait_for_completion_timeout(...) if (!timeout) return -ETIMEDOUT; with all kinds of permutations. 2024-06-04usb: typec: tcpm: print error on hard resetSebastian Reichel
A USB-C hard reset involves removing the voltage from VBUS for some time. So basically it has the same effect as removing the USB-C plug for a short moment. If the machine is powered from the USB-C port and does not have a fallback supply (e.g. a battery), this will result in a full machine reset due to power loss. Ideally we want to avoid triggering a hard reset on these boards. A non-working USB-C port is probably better than unplanned reboots. But boards with a backup supply should do the hard reset to get everything working again. In theory it would be enough to check the self_powered property, but it seems the property might not be configured consistently enough in system firmwares. So let's start with just printing an error message when a hard reset is triggered on systems we expect to be affected. This at least makes debugging issues on affected systems easier without impacting unaffected systems too much. 2024-06-04usb: typec: tcpm: avoid resets for missing source capability messagesSebastian Reichel
When the Linux Type-C controller drivers probe, they requests a soft reset, which should result in the source restarting to send Source Capability messages again independently of the previous state. Unfortunately some USB PD sources do not follow the specification and do not send them after a soft reset when they already negotiated a specific contract before. The current way (and what is described in the specificiation) to resolve this problem is triggering a hard reset. But a hard reset is fatal on batteryless platforms powered via USB-C PD, since that removes VBUS for some time. Since this is triggered at boot time, the system will be stuck in a boot loop. Examples for platforms affected by this are the Radxa Rock 5B or the Libre Computer Renegade Elite ROC-RK3399-PC. Instead of directly trying a hard reset when no Source Capability message is send by the USB-PD source automatically, this changes the state machine to try explicitly asking for the capabilities by sending a Get Source Capability control message. For me this solves issues with 2 different USB-PD sources - a RAVPower powerbank and a Lemorele USB-C dock. Every other PD source I own follows the specification and automatically sends the Source Capability message after a soft reset, which works with or without this change. I decided against making this extra step limited to devices not having the self_powered flag set, since I don't see any huge drawbacks in this approach and it keeps the logic simpler. The worst case scenario would be a power source, which is really stuck. In that case the hard reset is delayed by another 310ms. Before sending Enter Mode for an Alt Mode, there is a gap between Discover Modes and the Alt Mode driver queueing the Enter Mode VDM for the port partner to send a message to the port. If this message results in unregistering Alt Modes such as in a DR_SWAP, then the following deadlock can occur with respect to the DisplayPort Alt Mode driver: 1. The DR_SWAP state holds port->lock. Unregistering the Alt Mode driver results in a cancel_work_sync() that waits for the current dp_altmode_work to finish. 2. dp_altmode_work makes a call to tcpm_altmode_enter. The deadlock occurs because tcpm_queue_vdm_unlock attempts to hold port->lock. Before attempting to grab the lock, ensure that the port is in a state vdm_run_state_machine can run in. Alt Mode unregistration will not occur in these states. When a Fast Role Swap control message attempt results in a transition to ERROR_RECOVERY, the TCPC can still queue a TCPM_SOURCING_VBUS event. If the event is queued but processed after the tcpm_reset_port() call in the PORT_RESET state, then the following occurs: 1. tcpm_reset_port() calls tcpm_init_vbus() to reset the vbus sourcing and sinking state 2. tcpm_pd_event_handler() turns VBUS on before the port is in the default state. 3. The port resolves as a sink. In the SNK_DISCOVERY state, tcpm_set_charge() cannot set vbus to charge. Clear pd events within PORT_RESET to get rid of non-applicable events. 2024-04-04usb: typec: tcpm: Correct the PDO counting in pd_setKyle Tso
Off-by-one errors happen because nr_snk_pdo and nr_src_pdo are incorrectly added one. The index of the loop is equal to the number of PDOs to be updated when leaving the loop and it doesn't need to be added one. When doing the power negotiation, TCPM relies on the "nr_snk_pdo" as the size of the local sink PDO array to match the Source capabilities of the partner port. If the off-by-one overflow occurs, a wrong RDO might be sent and unexpected power transfer might happen such as over voltage or over current (than expected). "nr_src_pdo" is used to set the Rp level when the port is in Source role. It is also the array size of the local Source capabilities when filling up the buffer which will be sent as the Source PDOs (such as in Power Negotiation). If the off-by-one overflow occurs, a wrong Rp level might be set and wrong Source PDOs will be sent to the partner port. This could potentially cause over current or port resets. While commit 69f89168b310 ("usb: typec: tpcm: Fix issues with power being removed during reset") fixes the boot issues for bus powered devices such as LibreTech Renegade Elite/Firefly, it trades off the CC pins NOT being Hi-Zed during errory recovery (i.e PORT_RESET) for devices which are NOT bus powered(a.k.a self powered). This change Hi-Zs the CC pins only for self powered devices, thus preventing brown out for bus powered devices Adhering to spec is gaining more importance due to the Common charger initiative enforced by the European Union. Quoting from the spec: 4.5.2.2.2.1 ErrorRecovery State Requirements The port shall not drive VBUS or VCONN, and shall present a high-impedance to ground (above zOPEN) on its CC1 and CC2 pins. Hi-Zing the CC pins is the inteded behavior for PORT_RESET. CC pins are set to default state after tErrorRecovery in PORT_RESET_WAIT_OFF. 4.5.2.2.2.2 Exiting From ErrorRecovery State A Sink shall transition to Unattached.SNK after tErrorRecovery. 2024-03-05usb: typec: tcpm: fix SOP' sequences in tcpm_pd_svdmRD Babiera
The Smatch checker flags svdm_version being uninitialized for Discover Identity Messages within tcpm_pd_svdm for the CMDT_INIT case. Cable plugs cannot initialize SVDM commands, however a port partner that isn't allowed to communicate over SOP' could, which would result in the CMDT_INIT block running for a received SOP' message. First, initialize svdm_version for the TCPC_TX_SOP_PRIME case. If the svdm_version returns as an error, we expect the received svdm to be the result of Discover Identity that updates the value accordingly. Next, drop all SOP' messages of type CMDT_INIT within tcpm_pd_svdm. Finally, remove redundant call that assigns modep and pdev. Smatch will raise an uninitialized symbol error over modep_prime and pdev_prime, but both the assignment and use of these variables are guarded behind a check for rx_sop_type == TCPC_TX_SOP_PRIME. Since the merge of b717dfbf73e8 ("Revert "usb: typec: tcpm: fix cc role at port reset"") into mainline the LibreTech Renegade Elite/Firefly has died during boot, the main symptom observed in testing is a sudden stop in console output. Gábor Stefanik identified in review that the patch would cause power to be removed from devices without batteries (like this board), observing that while the patch is correct according to the spec this appears to be an oversight in the spec. after try role" The reverted commit makes the state machine only ever go from SRC_ATTACH_WAIT to SNK_TRY in endless loop when toggling. After revert it goes to SRC_ATTACHED after initially trying SNK_TRY earlier, as it should for toggling to ever detect the power source mode and the port is again able to provide power to attached power sinks. Given that ERROR_RECOVERY calls into PORT_RESET for Hi-Zing the CC pins, setting CC pins to default state during PORT_RESET breaks error recovery. 4.5.2.2.2.1 ErrorRecovery State Requirements The port shall not drive VBUS or VCONN, and shall present a high-impedance to ground (above zOPEN) on its CC1 and CC2 pins. Hi-Zing the CC pins is the inteded behavior for PORT_RESET. CC pins are set to default state after tErrorRecovery in PORT_RESET_WAIT_OFF. 4.5.2.2.2.2 Exiting From ErrorRecovery State A Sink shall transition to Unattached.SNK after tErrorRecovery. A Source shall transition to Unattached.SRC after tErrorRecovery. Adds Discover SVIDs and Discover Modes support for SOP' and Alt Mode SVDM support over SOP'. tcpm_port adds separate Alt Mode data for SOP'. svdm_consume_svids and svdm_consume_modes take the received SVDM's SOP* type to store svids/modes separately, and tcpm_register_plug_altmodes registers the active cable's alt modes. In tcpm_pd_svdm, the port will send Discover SVIDs to SOP' after Discover Modes on SOP if the connected cable is an active cable. Discover Modes on SOP' is sent following Discover SVIDs on SOP. Registering partner alt modes is delayed when an active cable is present until Discover Modes completes on SOP', or if the Discover SVIDs/Discover Modes request on SOP' encounters a transmission error. Add data message handling and Discover Identity SVDM over SOP' This patch contains the following changes: 1. pd_vdo Add VDO indices for active and passive cables, documentation to reflect expected number of objects depending on PD Revision, and macro to indicate port parter is data host capable. 2. tcpm Add typec_cable and typec_plug to tcpm_port to maintain cable and plug information. tcpm_port also adds send_discover_prime to indicate that Discover Identity should be sent out of the ready state. tcpm_queue_vdm and tcpm_send_vdm now take the SOP* type when transmitting messages. tcpm_handle_vdm_request and tcpm_pd_svdm also use the SOP* type. tcpm_pd_svdm handles Discover Identity messages for SOP and SOP'. In the SOP case, the port uses tcpm_attempt_vconn_swap_discovery to determine if a Vconn swap is needed for cable communication. Otherwise, the port will send Discover Identity on SOP' if it can, or default to Discover SVIDs. svdm_consume_identity_sop_prime consumes the result of Discover Identity on SOP'. It fills out cable identity and description, and it registers the cable. The SOP' plug is registered as well. The VDM state machine is adjusted to construct messages based on the SOP* type. If a transmission error occurs after the max number of retries for Discover Identity over SOP', then the port will send Discover SVIDs over SOP. Add tx_sop_type to tcpm_pd_send_control and rx_sop_type to tcpm_pd_ctrl_request. TCPC_TX_SOP is added to all pd_send_control calls, but TCPC_TX_SOP_PRIME is added to pd_send_control for a SOFT_RESET message sent after a Vconn swap that makes the Port the Vconn source. Likewise, tcpm_pd_ctrl_request resets the proper protocol layer depending on rx_sop_type for SOFT_RESET. VCONN_SWAP_TURN_ON_VCONN now moves to a new state, VCONN_SWAP_SEND_SOFT_RESET. This state sends SOFT_RESET over SOP' before transitioning to the ready state if applicable. It transitions after PD_T_VCONN_STABLE, definied in pd.h as the time required for Vconn to be on before transmitting messages. 2024-01-27usb: typec: tcpm: process receive and transmission of sop' messagesRD Babiera
Add negotiated revision and tx/rx message ids to tcpm_port specific to SOP'. tx_sop_type is added to the tcpm_port to determine whether the current constructed message will be sent over SOP or SOP' if not sent immediately. tcpm_pd_rx_handler updates the received message ids. SOP* messages are not processed afterwards. The handler also calls tcpm_can_communicate_sop_prime to determine if a SOP' message is directed towards the port, and drops SOP' messages it should not respond to. tcpm_can_communicate_sop_prime is added as a helper to determine whether the port is capable of communicating over SOP' at a given moment. Being the Vconn source is a requirement in Power Delivery 3.0 but only a recommendation in Power Delviery 2.0. Because the port should ensure that the cable is powered before communication, always enforce the port is the Vconn source regardless of revision.
