2022-06-10vme: move back to stagingArnd Bergmann
The VME subsystem graduated from staging into a top-level subsystem in 2012, with commit db3b9e990e75 ("Staging: VME: move VME drivers out of staging") stating: The VME device drivers have not moved out yet due to some API questions they are still working through, that should happen soon, hopefully. However, this never happened: maintenance of drivers/vme effectively stopped in 2017, with all subsequent changes being treewide cleanups. No hardware driver remains in staging, only the limited user-level access, and I just removed one of the two bridge drivers and the only remaining board. drivers/staging/vme/devices/ was recently moved to drivers/staging/vme_user/, but as the vme_user driver is the only one remaining for this subsystem, it is easier to just move the remaining three source files into this directory rather than keeping the original hierarchy. 2022-06-10vme: remove ca91cx42 Universe-II supportArnd Bergmann
This is one of four remaining drivers using the ancient virt_to_bus() interface instead of the dma-mapping interface, making it incompatible with most modern machines. As nobody has cleaned this up, there is a high chance that this driver has no actual users. The chip was introduced in 1997 and only supports 32-bit legacy PCI. It was replaced by TSI148 in 2004, but that chip has since been discontinued, while a version of the older Universe II remains in production after 25 years. The vme_vmivme7805 board uses Universe-II, so this also gets removed in the process, but PCI add-on cards based on TSI148 can still work in theory. If there are users of the Universe-II driver after all, it is of course possible to revert this patch and fix it to use the dma-mapping interface like the tsi148 driver does. 2022-04-22staging: vme: Move vme_user to staging KConfigBruno Moreira-Guedes
Currently, the VME_USER driver is in the staging tree Kconfig, unlike other VME drivers already moved to the main portions of the kernel tree. Its configuration is, however, nested into the VME_BUS config option, which might be misleading. Since the staging tree "[...] is used to hold stand-alone drivers and filesystem that are not ready to be merged into the main portion of the Linux kernel tree [...]"(from https://lore.kernel.org/all/20090320172502.GA14647@kroah.com/T/), staging drivers should appear nested into the Main Menu -> Device Drivers -> Staging Drivers to make sure the user don't pick it without being fully aware of its staging status as it could be the case in Menu -> Device Drivers -> VME bridge support (the current location). With this change menuconfig users will clearly know this is not a driver in the main portion of the kernel tree and decide whether to build it or not with that clearly in mind. This change goes into the same direction of commit <4b4cdf3979c32fa3d042d150f49449c74d048553> ("STAGING: Move staging drivers back to staging-specific menu") Signed-off-by: Bruno Moreira-Guedes <codeagain@codeagain.dev> Link: https://lore.kernel.org/r/f6e6d1d2b02385f11848022f154007ef191181c1.1650544175.git.codeagain@codeagain.dev Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@linuxfoundation.org>
2021-07-21bus: Make remove callback return voidUwe Kleine-König
The driver core ignores the return value of this callback because there is only little it can do when a device disappears. This is the final bit of a long lasting cleanup quest where several buses were converted to also return void from their remove callback. Additionally some resource leaks were fixed that were caused by drivers returning an error code in the expectation that the driver won't go away. With struct bus_type::remove returning void it's prevented that newly implemented buses return an ignored error code and so don't anticipate wrong expectations for driver authors. 2021-02-09vme: make remove callback return voidUwe Kleine-König
The driver core ignores the return value of struct bus_type::remove() because there is only little that can be done. To simplify the quest to make this function return void, let struct vme_driver::remove return void, too. There is only a single vme driver and it already returns 0 unconditionally in .remove(). 2020-12-09vme: switch from 'pci_' to 'dma_' APIChristophe JAILLET
The wrappers in include/linux/pci-dma-compat.h should go away. The patch has been generated with the coccinelle script below and has been hand modified to replace GFP_ with a correct flag. It has been compile tested. When memory is allocated in 'ca91cx42_alloc_consistent()' and 'tsi148_alloc_consistent()' GFP_KERNEL can be used because both functions are called only from 'vme_alloc_consistent()' (vme.c). This function is only called from the 'vme_user_probe()' probe function and no lock is taken in the between. When memory is allocated in 'ca91cx42_crcsr_init()' and 'tsi148_crcsr_init()' GFP_KERNEL can be used because both functions are called only from their corresponding probe function and no lock is taken in the between. @@ @@ - PCI_DMA_BIDIRECTIONAL + DMA_BIDIRECTIONAL @@ @@ - PCI_DMA_TODEVICE + DMA_TO_DEVICE @@ @@ - PCI_DMA_FROMDEVICE + DMA_FROM_DEVICE @@ @@ - PCI_DMA_NONE + DMA_NONE @@ expression e1, e2, e3; @@ - pci_alloc_consistent(e1, e2, e3) + dma_alloc_coherent(&e1->dev, e2, e3, GFP_) @@ expression e1, e2, e3; @@ - pci_zalloc_consistent(e1, e2, e3) + dma_alloc_coherent(&e1->dev, e2, e3, GFP_) @@ expression e1, e2, e3, e4; @@ - pci_free_consistent(e1, e2, e3, e4) + dma_free_coherent(&e1->dev, e2, e3, e4) @@ expression e1, e2, e3, e4; @@ - pci_map_single(e1, e2, e3, e4) + dma_map_single(&e1->dev, e2, e3, e4) @@ expression e1, e2, e3, e4; @@ - pci_unmap_single(e1, e2, e3, e4) + dma_unmap_single(&e1->dev, e2, e3, e4) @@ expression e1, e2, e3, e4, e5; @@ - pci_map_page(e1, e2, e3, e4, e5) + dma_map_page(&e1->dev, e2, e3, e4, e5) @@ expression e1, e2, e3, e4; @@ - pci_unmap_page(e1, e2, e3, e4) + dma_unmap_page(&e1->dev, e2, e3, e4) @@ expression e1, e2, e3, e4; @@ - pci_map_sg(e1, e2, e3, e4) + dma_map_sg(&e1->dev, e2, e3, e4) @@ expression e1, e2, e3, e4; @@ - pci_unmap_sg(e1, e2, e3, e4) + dma_unmap_sg(&e1->dev, e2, e3, e4) @@ expression e1, e2, e3, e4; @@ - pci_dma_sync_single_for_cpu(e1, e2, e3, e4) + dma_sync_single_for_cpu(&e1->dev, e2, e3, e4) @@ expression e1, e2, e3, e4; @@ - pci_dma_sync_single_for_device(e1, e2, e3, e4) + dma_sync_single_for_device(&e1->dev, e2, e3, e4) @@ expression e1, e2, e3, e4; @@ - pci_dma_sync_sg_for_cpu(e1, e2, e3, e4) + dma_sync_sg_for_cpu(&e1->dev, e2, e3, e4) @@ expression e1, e2, e3, e4; @@ - pci_dma_sync_sg_for_device(e1, e2, e3, e4) + dma_sync_sg_for_device(&e1->dev, e2, e3, e4) @@ expression e1, e2; @@ - pci_dma_mapping_error(e1, e2) + dma_mapping_error(&e1->dev, e2) @@ expression e1, e2; @@ - pci_set_dma_mask(e1, e2) + dma_set_mask(&e1->dev, e2) @@ expression e1, e2; @@ - pci_set_consistent_dma_mask(e1, e2) + dma_set_coherent_mask(&e1->dev, e2) Signed-off-by: Christophe JAILLET <christophe.jaillet@wanadoo.fr> Link: https://lore.kernel.org/r/20201206071352.21949-1-christophe.jaillet@wanadoo.fr Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@linuxfoundation.org>

2017-11-02License cleanup: add SPDX GPL-2.0 license identifier to files with no licenseGreg Kroah-Hartman
Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license. By default all files without license information are under the default license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2. Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0' SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text. This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and Philippe Ombredanne. How this work was done: Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of the use cases: - file had no licensing information it it. - file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it, - file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information, Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords. The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files. The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s) to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was: - Files considered eligible had to be source code files. - Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5 lines of source - File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5 lines). All documentation files were explicitly excluded. The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license identifiers to apply. - when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was considered to have no license information in it, and the top level COPYING file license applied. For non */uapi/* files that summary was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 11139 and resulted in the first patch in this series. If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". Results of that was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 930 and resulted in the second patch in this series. - if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in it (per prior point). Results summary: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------ GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 270 GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 169 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-2-Clause) 21 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 17 LGPL-2.1+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 15 GPL-1.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 14 ((GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 5 LGPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 4 LGPL-2.1 WITH Linux-syscall-note 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR MIT) 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) AND MIT) 1 and that resulted in the third patch in this series. - when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became the concluded license(s). - when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a license but the other didn't, or they both detected different licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred. - In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics). - When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. - If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier, the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later in time. In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so they are related. Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks in about 15000 files. In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the correct identifier. Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch version early this week with: - a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected license ids and scores - reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+ files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct - reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the different types of files to be modified. These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to generate the patches. 2017-10-04vme: Fix integer overflow checking in vme_check_window()Dan Carpenter
The controversial part of this patch is that I've changed it so we now prevent integer overflows for VME_USER types and before we didn't. I view it as kernel-hardening. I looked at a couple places that used VME_USER types and they seemed pretty suspicious so I'm pretty sure preventing overflows here is a good idea. The most common problem which this function is for cases like VME_A16 where we don't put an upper bound on "size" so you could have "size" set to U64_MAX and a valid vme_base would overflow the "vme_base + size" into the valid range as well. In the VME_A64 case, the integer overflow checking doesn't work because "U64_MAX + 1" has an integer overflow and it's just a complicated way of saying zero. That VME_A64 case is sort of interesting as well because there is a VME_A64_MAX define which is set to "U64_MAX + 1". The compiler will never let anyone use it since it can't be stored in a u64 variable... With my patch it's now limited to just U64_MAX. Anyway, I put one integer overflow check at the start of the function and deleted all existing checks. 2017-01-25VME: restore bus_remove function causing incomplete module unloadStefano Babic
Commit 050c3d52cc7810d9d17b8cd231708609af6876ae ("vme: make core vme support explicitly non-modular") dropped the remove function because it appeared as if it was for removal of the bus, which is not supported. However, vme_bus_remove() is called when a VME device is removed from the bus and not when the bus is removed; as it calls the VME device driver's cleanup function. Without this function, the remove() in the VME device driver is never called and VME device drivers cannot be reloaded again. Here we restore the remove function that was deleted in that commit, and the reference to the function in the bus structure. 2016-09-13vme: fake: fix build for 64-bit dma_addr_tArnd Bergmann
casting between dma_addr_t and a pointer is generally tricky, as they might not be the same size and almost never point into the same address space. 2016-08-31vme: make core vme support explicitly non-modularPaul Gortmaker
The Kconfig currently controlling compilation of this code is: drivers/vme/Kconfig:menuconfig VME_BUS drivers/vme/Kconfig: bool "VME bridge support" ...meaning that it currently is not being built as a module by anyone. Lets remove the modular code that is essentially orphaned, so that when reading the driver there is no doubt it is builtin-only. We replace module.h and moduleparam.h (unused) with init.h and also export.h ; the latter since this file does export some syms. Since this is a struct bus_type and not a platform_driver, we don't have any ".suppress_bind_attrs" to be concerned about when we drop the ".remove" code from this file. Since module_init was not in use by this code, the init ordering remains unchanged with this commit. 2016-08-31vme: change LM callback argument to void pointerAaron Sierra
Make the location monitor callback function prototype more useful by changing the argument from an integer to a void pointer. All VME bridge drivers were simply passing the location monitor index (e.g. 0-3) as the argument to these callbacks. It is much more useful to pass back a pointer to data that the callback-registering driver cares about. There appear to be no in-kernel callers of vme_lm_attach (or vme_lme_request for that matter), so this change only affects the VME subsystem and bridge drivers. This has been tested with Tsi148 hardware, but the CA91Cx42 changes have only been compiled.
