2016-01-22ext2: call dax_pfn_mkwrite() for DAX fsync/msyncRoss Zwisler
To properly support the new DAX fsync/msync infrastructure filesystems need to call dax_pfn_mkwrite() so that DAX can track when user pages are dirtied. 2016-01-22wrappers for ->i_mutex accessAl Viro
parallel to mutex_{lock,unlock,trylock,is_locked,lock_nested}, inode_foo(inode) being mutex_foo(&inode->i_mutex). Please, use those for access to ->i_mutex; over the coming cycle ->i_mutex will become rwsem, with ->lookup() done with it held only shared. Signed-off-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk>
2016-01-14kmemcg: account certain kmem allocations to memcgVladimir Davydov
Mark those kmem allocations that are known to be easily triggered from userspace as __GFP_ACCOUNT/SLAB_ACCOUNT, which makes them accounted to memcg. For the list, see below: - threadinfo - task_struct - task_delay_info - pid - cred - mm_struct - vm_area_struct and vm_region (nommu) - anon_vma and anon_vma_chain - signal_struct - sighand_struct - fs_struct - files_struct - fdtable and fdtable->full_fds_bits - dentry and external_name - inode for all filesystems. This is the most tedious part, because most filesystems overwrite the alloc_inode method. The list is far from complete, so feel free to add more objects. Nevertheless, it should be close to "account everything" approach and keep most workloads within bounds. Malevolent users will be able to breach the limit, but this was possible even with the former "account everything" approach (simply because it did not account everything in fact). git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/viro/vfs Pull misc vfs updates from Al Viro: "All kinds of stuff. That probably should've been 5 or 6 separate branches, but by the time I'd realized how large and mixed that bag had become it had been too close to -final to play with rebasing. Some fs/namei.c cleanups there, memdup_user_nul() introduction and switching open-coded instances, burying long-dead code, whack-a-mole of various kinds, several new helpers for ->llseek(), assorted cleanups and fixes from various people, etc. One piece probably deserves special mention - Neil's lookup_one_len_unlocked(). Similar to lookup_one_len(), but gets called without ->i_mutex and tries to avoid ever taking it. That, of course, means that it's not useful for any directory modifications, but things like getting inode attributes in nfds readdirplus are fine with that. I really should've asked for moratorium on lookup-related changes this cycle, but since I hadn't done that early enough... I *am* asking for that for the coming cycle, though - I'm going to try and get conversion of i_mutex to rwsem with ->lookup() done under lock taken shared. 2015-12-13xattr handlers: Simplify list operationAndreas Gruenbacher
Change the list operation to only return whether or not an attribute should be listed. Copying the attribute names into the buffer is moved to the callers. Since the result only depends on the dentry and not on the attribute name, we do not pass the attribute name to list operations. 2015-12-08replace ->follow_link() with new method that could stay in RCU modeAl Viro
new method: ->get_link(); replacement of ->follow_link(). The differences are: * inode and dentry are passed separately * might be called both in RCU and non-RCU mode; the former is indicated by passing it a NULL dentry. * when called that way it isn't allowed to block and should return ERR_PTR(-ECHILD) if it needs to be called in non-RCU mode. It's a flagday change - the old method is gone, all in-tree instances converted. Conversion isn't hard; said that, so far very few instances do not immediately bail out when called in RCU mode. That'll change in the next commits. Signed-off-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk>
2015-12-08don't put symlink bodies in pagecache into highmemAl Viro
kmap() in page_follow_link_light() needed to go - allowing to hold an arbitrary number of kmaps for long is a great way to deadlocking the system. new helper (inode_nohighmem(inode)) needs to be used for pagecache symlinks inodes; done for all in-tree cases. page_follow_link_light() instrumented to yell about anything missed. 2015-12-06vfs: Distinguish between full xattr names and proper prefixesAndreas Gruenbacher
Add an additional "name" field to struct xattr_handler. When the name is set, the handler matches attributes with exactly that name. When the prefix is set instead, the handler matches attributes with the given prefix and with a non-empty suffix. This patch should avoid bugs like the one fixed in commit c361016a in the future. 2015-11-13xattr handlers: Pass handler to operations instead of flagsAndreas Gruenbacher
The xattr_handler operations are currently all passed a file system specific flags value which the operations can use to disambiguate between different handlers; some file systems use that to distinguish the xattr namespace, for example. In some oprations, it would be useful to also have access to the handler prefix. To allow that, pass a pointer to the handler to operations instead of the flags value alone. 2015-10-19ext2: Add locking for DAX faultsRoss Zwisler
Add locking to ensure that DAX faults are isolated from ext2 operations that modify the data blocks allocation for an inode. This is intended to be analogous to the work being done in XFS by Dave Chinner: http://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-fsdevel/msg90260.html Compared with XFS the ext2 case is greatly simplified by the fact that ext2 already allocates and zeros new blocks before they are returned as part of ext2_get_block(), so DAX doesn't need to worry about getting unmapped or unwritten buffer heads. This means that the only work we need to do in ext2 is to isolate the DAX faults from inode block allocation changes. I believe this just means that we need to isolate the DAX faults from truncate operations. The newly introduced dax_sem is intended to replicate the protection offered by i_mmaplock in XFS. In addition to truncate the i_mmaplock also protects XFS operations like hole punching, fallocate down, extent manipulation IOCTLS like xfs_ioc_space() and extent swapping. Truncate is the only one of these operations supported by ext2. Signed-off-by: Ross Zwisler <ross.zwisler@linux.intel.com> Signed-off-by: Jan Kara <jack@suse.com>

2015-09-08dax: move DAX-related functions to a new headerMatthew Wilcox
In order to handle the !CONFIG_TRANSPARENT_HUGEPAGES case, we need to return VM_FAULT_FALLBACK from the inlined dax_pmd_fault(), which is defined in linux/mm.h. Given that we don't want to include <linux/mm.h> in <linux/fs.h>, the easiest solution is to move the DAX-related functions to a new header, <linux/dax.h>. We could also have moved VM_FAULT_* definitions to a new header, or a different header that isn't quite such a boil-the-ocean header as <linux/mm.h>, but this felt like the best option. 2015-06-17vfs, writeback: replace FS_CGROUP_WRITEBACK with SB_I_CGROUPWBTejun Heo
FS_CGROUP_WRITEBACK indicates whether a file_system_type supports cgroup writeback; however, different super_blocks of the same file_system_type may or may not support cgroup writeback depending on filesystem options. This patch replaces FS_CGROUP_WRITEBACK with a per-super_block flag. super_block->s_flags carries some internal flags in the high bits but it's exposd to userland through uapi header and running out of space anyway. This patch adds a new field super_block->s_iflags to carry kernel-internal flags. It is currently only used by the new SB_I_CGROUPWB flag whose concatenated and abbreviated name is for consistency with other super_block flags. ext2_fill_super() is updated to set SB_I_CGROUPWB. v2: Added super_block->s_iflags instead of stealing another high bit from sb->s_flags as suggested by Christoph and Jan. 2015-06-04dax: don't abuse get_block mapping for endio callbacksDave Chinner
dax_fault() currently relies on the get_block callback to attach an io completion callback to the mapping buffer head so that it can run unwritten extent conversion after zeroing allocated blocks. Instead of this hack, pass the conversion callback directly into dax_fault() similar to the get_block callback. When the filesystem allocates unwritten extents, it will set the buffer_unwritten() flag, and hence the dax_fault code can call the completion function in the contexts where it is necessary without overloading the mapping buffer head. Note: The changes to ext4 to use this interface are suspect at best. In fact, the way ext4 did this end_io assignment in the first place looks suspect because it only set a completion callback when there wasn't already some other write() call taking place on the same inode. The ext4 end_io code looks rather intricate and fragile with all it's reference counting and passing to different contexts for modification via inode private pointers that aren't protected by locks... 2015-04-15dax: unify ext2/4_{dax,}_file_operationsBoaz Harrosh
The original dax patchset split the ext2/4_file_operations because of the two NULL splice_read/splice_write in the dax case. In the vfs if splice_read/splice_write are NULL we then call default_splice_read/write. What we do here is make generic_file_splice_read aware of IS_DAX() so the original ext2/4_file_operations can be used as is. For write it appears that iter_file_splice_write is just fine. It uses the regular f_op->write(file,..) or new_sync_write(file, ...). 2015-04-15dax: use pfn_mkwrite to update c/mtime + freeze protectionBoaz Harrosh
From: Yigal Korman <yigal@plexistor.com> [v1] Without this patch, c/mtime is not updated correctly when mmap'ed page is first read from and then written to. A new xfstest is submitted for testing this (generic/080) [v2] Jan Kara has pointed out that if we add the sb_start/end_pagefault pair in the new pfn_mkwrite we are then fixing another bug where: A user could start writing to the page while filesystem is frozen. 2015-04-11direct_IO: use iov_iter_rw() instead of rw everywhereOmar Sandoval
The rw parameter to direct_IO is redundant with iov_iter->type, and treated slightly differently just about everywhere it's used: some users do rw & WRITE, and others do rw == WRITE where they should be doing a bitwise check. Simplify this with the new iov_iter_rw() helper, which always returns either READ or WRITE. Signed-off-by: Omar Sandoval <osandov@osandov.com> Signed-off-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk>

2015-02-16ext2: remove ext2_xip_verify_sb()Matthew Wilcox
Jan Kara pointed out that calling ext2_xip_verify_sb() in ext2_remount() doesn't make sense, since changing the XIP option on remount isn't allowed.
